Back to Froyo - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

so I was kind of starting to lose hope with this phone. When I first got it I had fallen in love with it bit a year and a half later I found myself struggling to do basic things .... most games stuttered, the battery hardly lasted, the internet browsers were barely responsive, and the camera aweful. Google chrome is agony and for some reason it came with so many of the new roms ... ive used over 4 or 5 roms in the last few months and settled on the least horrible ice cold sandwich. it occured to me to go back ro the original phones configuration just for curiousity and I was shocked... I loaded up a backup of froyo and WOW... There must bed something I font understand because the phone ID a million times more responsive, loads faster, the screens are smooth, the browser, a luxury i hadnt used in months, was silky smooth and the CAMERA just beat the crap out of any other in any other rom ... I really want to stick with this ... theres absolutely nothing i miss from the old roms other than one thing. .. apps ... the playstore is empty note and i have a feeling that has to do with tree app developers not caterimg froyo... any1 have a way around this? ?

I was thinking this the other day - I have been going through ICS Sense ROMs but all of them were dragging their feet. The last Sense ROM I put on was a customised version of Sabsa Prime - it was usable but leagues apart from my wife's HTC One S. I remember Froyo being so much quicker... Anyway I put one of the unofficial CyanogenMod 10.1 ROMs on and I haven't looked back Its still not as quick as the One S but its massively more usable than the ICS Sense ROMs out there.
Andy

So you think i should go with a cm10 rom? Do you think the empty marketplace could just be a bad backup that caused the playstore not to recognize my phone or is it all lost for Froyo now?

1. This should probably go into Q&A section
2. You could try to flash gapps for froyo in recovery.

Well as said before wrong section OP
as far as responsiveness goes you shud try aospx ics rom and cm 10.1
For sense blackout 3.2 (if you can live w/o wifi hotspot---which i think will be fixed in upcoming version)...i use it with desense mod its gr8
and reported

Stock 3.12 ( gingerbread ) is good enough i think.
Blackout is great but failed in MMS functionality.

[Q] Looking for a new ROM

Hello peoples, Im looking for new ROM. One that has great batt life, one that will always get sms and mms. Any suggestions? I like sense ROM's and all the goodies that come with them. Also one that I can add my own touch to.
Stickies exist for a reason

Yea I know stickes are there, but I want some first hand advice. Not something that was put together over time.

Edit: By the way, nobody can tell you what ROM is the best. There are a plethora of ROMs out there. Half the fun of having a rooted phone is to get flash happy with various ROMs. You need to try out different ROM/kernel combinations and find which one has the features you want with the performance and battery sustainability you need. My setup works amazingly well for me. But I've seen people who have the exact same setup and have crap battery life, bugs in their system, or just don't like the UI. It's all user preference. Get flash happy until you find one that works best for you and your style.
for sure mikg 2.58 seneless. i use the no lock version. its legit. beast battery better than aosp and fast. using agressive freedom kernel. everything works.
The new FreshEvo 4.3.1 with the standard Freedom kernel has been giving my two Evo's over 12 hours with heavy usage. It runs smooth as "buddah"...
But it is a personal choice. Fresh is a Sense ROM, which may or may not be to your taste.

Really? I love my miui setup. It gets a full day from wake up to time I go to bed. I always thought aosp had better battery than sense. I might give Mikg a shot.

I run synergy with the carousel mod. has great battery life on my hardware and is the best when it comes to getting text/mms on time. I have tried almost every sense rom that has come out in the past 4 months and keep going back to synergy.
The Blazing Roms team working on FEARDEme and Hybrid really have something sweet going. Granted, they're still in late beta, but if you follow their thread and their site, they really have some great stuff.

I agree that they are great stuff, I used FEARmede for a while and would still be on it, i just couldnt go without my 4g. If 4g is not a big deal for you then by all means take some of team blazes roms for a ride. Make sure to read the features on all of them, they differ a little from each other.

Thank you all for the input and not telling me to search a sticky or that there is this or that for a "reason". You think I havent tried all sorts of ROMs/kernals? I cant tell you how many times I flashed a new ROM/kernal. I was hooked on flashing for a while, damn near had to go to rehab for that shyt. Yes, I know, every phone is different, but I just wanted some first hand advice from my fellow XDA'ers. I really apprecaite the feed back with the replies I got. So thank you all again. Time to get flash happy, woohooo!!!!
try the evo classic v0.0.3 by tommytomatoe one sweet Rom fast as a jackrabbit with a firecracker up his ass and I stay with about 225 RAM with my 7 homesreens full of widgets. and my battery lasts all day I can get 13 or so hrs of screen on time on my 3500 and about 6 or 7 on the stock battery and that's straight screen on almost the entire time cuz I never put my phone down. when I'm not on it all day my 3500 will go 12 plus hrs and be around 75% or so with moderate use but usually I overheat and bootloop b4 my battery dies from playing modern warfare 2 all damn day.

No-Sense or Sense?

Hey guys,
I recently flashed between ARHD and LeeDroiD, both already fantastic ROMs, considering the Device just launched. Great respect for that dedication and support!
Tho, it seems both ROMs offer a No-Sense installation, or its possible.
AFAIK, Sense UI 4.0 still is pretty buggy. Memory Management is fuxort and causes Rosie Reboots every now and then. Plus, it seems like Sense / Rosie is causing the Phone to slow down a tad. When I use Trebuchet or Apex Launcher, Screen scrolling is WONDERFULLY smooth. Noticeably smoother than on my previous devices (Desire HD, Galaxy S2 i9100).
Question is: Even tho I always loved Sense UI, does removing Sense / Rosie speed up the phone in general? I would be perfectly fine with Apex or Trebuchet, as they run absolutely smooth so far, even with quite some widgets.
Thing is: I noticed alot of games acting up after a while, little lags every now and then, most likely a sign of cleaning up memory in the background to get the active App (in this case the game) more spare Memory to fill up. Sense UI and its Widgets seem to consume quite alot Memory, and because of the bugged memory management, it starts to lag more and more. After quitting the game, Rosie usually reboots.
I love Sense, always have, missed it alot after switching to the Galaxy S2 back in the days, but to speed up the phone and get rid of occasional lags, I would sacrifice Sense for the time being (until a new Firmware fixes issues).
I am still running Sense 4.0, but before I flash again, I would like to have your opinion and maybe experience with this matter.
Thanks guys!
You can use my ROM in pair with ROM cleaner and Nova Launcher

Guys, you 2 got GREAT ROMs running. Still flashing between them
I will try both Non-Sense'd ROMs. Sense really seems effin memory hungy. Hopefully it speeds things up for now
And you 2 keep the goodies commin'!

This looks like a good place to ask this question ....
How are the Widgets in Sense 4.0 compare to Sense 3.x in quantity & options ?
Thank you in advance,

I am currently trying No-Sense. The phone feels faster, indeed. Better response, apps start a little faster, haven't had a Launcher Reboot ever since (but I am using Apex instead of Nova as for now).
Too bad the Lockscreen-Shortcuts are gone, but thats normal since there's no HTC Sense Launcher anymore (Dock-Icons).

LOL, Lee's sense stripper
I am absolutely astonished now much work some ppl put in sense. I wouldn't waste a second on this launcher as it's just way too bloated (and 4.0 should be stripped ), lags on my 4-core phone, isn't able to scroll a live wallpaper smoothly and so on. Especially with launchers like Apex out there, lightweight and very fast plus customizable, I just don't get it.
Anyhow, we need a good camera alternative asap so we can go AOSP...
Sweeeeet, will try this as soon as I get my new unit.
Does anybod know if the camera UI is gone too or not?

Maybe some people like the consistent look and feel, and the at-a-glance information that the Sense widgets give them. People like me.
Lags? That depends on your perception. I don't have a problem with waiting 0.5ms to flip between one screen and the next. Maybe I'm just a patient person!!!!!!!!!
The only thing i ll miss (as i m considering using AOSP launcher, never been fan of sense) is the HTC music widget, notes widget and calendar widget. I ve been HTC fan for some years now and always been going AOSP as soon as i get the device I always missed those widgets from HTC

After every RAM intensive app whenever I went back "home" I was greeted by a "loading" screen and I had to wait several secs to bring rosie back to life, never happened to me with Apex.
Having to stare at a loading text on a brand new quad core phone just to load the launcher is a bit embarrassing, don't you think?

I don't like the calendar widget at all - I use a combination of simple calendar widget and business calendars week view, gives me more info over the next few days than a bunch of dots
As for notes I use catch, but there is one very good post it style note app out there but thats not the way I am using notes on my phone and my player of choice, PowerAmp has several nice widgets, so this is also not something I would miss.
What I like and would really miss are the camera app obviously, the tasks widget (for the ability to sync with G and exchange) and the mail app which is really nice. The AOSP is nice too though, so its acutally onle the camera app that will prevent me from going AOSP.
Most probably I am going to try this ROM, AOSP themed sense ROM, once the unlock before answering a call bug is squashed.

Great post...
I came from HD2, best fkin phone ever, and got HOX, the next best fkin phone ever, so don't you tell me to go get an iPhone! This is about the biggest insult you can make here on xda, shame on you!
I bother with htc phones because I used to have a HD2, a diamond before and a 3300 even before that. They were all very well built and had some good hw specs. Back in the wm days, sense was a revelation and on my HD2 I could flash whatever I want, but I was shocked when I tried sense. Now on my HOX, I learned to h8 it once again. If it wasn't for the camera app, I'd be long gone. It's a real shame that the HOX has such a great cam with all those great features that can only be used together with the rest of sense. These ugly icons are so outdated, have a look at AOSP to get a feel what a menu should look like nowadays.
I never liked Samsung, the GSII had something cheap when you had it in your hand, nothing as solid and nice like htc. And I h8 them for trying to copy fkin apple, wth would want that anyway. I h8 this carrier / manufacturer customizing crap, most of the bases are flat out rubbish and only delay the updates of optimzations to the phone and make it unusable. My gf wanted to get rid of her defy, I rooted it and flashed CM7. She was absolutely amazed and at the same time upset/confused, htf a company could fk up their own product so badly! These guys should try to keep themselves apart with hw and design choices, not with bloat ware and stupid overlays.
And last but not least, I buy a phone because of the hw, not the sw, especially if the sw is or should be open source!
What better is there than a community working on the android base (CM / AOKP)?
I h8 the idea of now being forced to wait for a company to bring out new updates to my system, I really do...

Back To Stock?

Anyone gone back to stock on their HOX?
I have tried several Roms on mine & I have to be honest, I really don't see a big difference in either speed or functionality. Other than being able to back up.
Don't get me wrong I'm not dissing anyone's rom, I just feel the HOX is not what I thought it would be, It's juddery & jerky & no cooked rom has fixed that.
Hopefully the next update with fix this, if not the HOX could be on it's bike....
Looking like just me, eh
I switched back to stock too. Looking forward to CM10 or AOSP Jelly Bean ROM.
I know what you mean. I tried a number of sense based ROMs hoping that the devs would have corrected HTC faux pas' but to no avail..multitasking was still broken, and the launcher bugged the hell out of me with its constant re-draws and 30 odd second loading time. I have since switched to a cyanogen ROM hoping that completely eliminating sense would solve the performance issues but no... although the ROM i am runing now (CM9) is in general smoother and less juttery than stock and other sense ROMS, the browser performance is still woeful regardless of what app I use and I'm still seeing redraws.. not to mention my signal is ridiculously variable - it will go from 3 bars to none without me even moving the phone's position in the slightest (but better than stock where it would fail to reconnect if signal was lost). I would have sold this phone already and replaced it with an S3 if my hands weren't tied (staff handset). I would have overlooked the limitations such as sd card storage, non-removable battery etc. if the performance of the phone otherwise was awesome but it's not, despite having a quad core processor. I hoping jelly bean drastically improves performance otherwise I will be looking to replace this phone with an S3.
Never going back to stock if I can help it. Currently running cm9 and loving it, why would I go back to stock. Battery sucks on stock.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
I've been back to stock after I bricked my phone and used an RUU. I found that the stock phone itself was very slow compared to running a ROM. The battery life on stock also was very short compared to using a ROM. The lag you may get is on every sence ROM. Maybe install the smooth Rosie mod?

The mistake I made was buying the S3.
Apart from the UI, the S3 better than the HOX in everything I have asked to do.
It's just sat on the side gathering dust now :crying:
Back to Stock
my phone was messing up after trying to go back to cleanrom 4.1 from cyanogenmod 9 alpha 5 and it went to bootloop, so i got it out of it and ran the ruu to go back to stock, now that it is there I can't seem to use the messaging app, along with the phone or contacts apps. Everytime i try to click one it will just crash almost immediately, i even tried re-rooting, unlock, and flashed a new rom, still wont work right. I need help please
Guys keep your stock Rom backed up on ce mod for jb coming up, but you should really try the miui for one x, just go to www.onexroot.com and click on the Roma tab and miui will be there. It is a mix of IPs and touchwiz but has some issues with root permissions, other than that it is fine though and I love it. It also has monthly updates adding new features and converting more of it to English, almost everything is now, give it a whirl, I'm sure you will love it, just remeberbtk update it through the in Rom updater

i think that mod roms based on 2.05 test are faster and have some more nice functions like the setting of multitasking button as menu button (that remove 3dots ics menu)....i think that the only competitors of HOX now is the sgs3 but i will never change an htc for a samsung fake-phone-plastic design. :silly:
not every HOX has built with the same quality I guess. Mine with stock should be as good as other customize ROM HOX in their best state. If you think back to stock will be better for your HOX, just try and you will see the differences.

Cancer... Once your in a custom rom there is no point reverting to stock unless you are to use your warranty.
Don't effin worry about updates rom/kernel devs update their stuff when new bases/firmwares hit the device. You'd just need to wait a few days for that update.

[Q] 3 months in... starting to lag

well it's been my experience with every android phone and every rom i ever used for any of those phones, that after a month or so from a clean install, things start to lag, freeze, etc. my galaxy s3 has made it about 3 months, but it's starting to get there.
i don't think i'm asking too much of it. i have 4 homescreen widgets. i use nova as a replacement launcher. i have a lot of apps installed (including the preinstalled stuff, right around 150), but most of them are games, and i tend to remove games/apps that come with intrusive ads and unwanted notifications because i want to keep this thing running great.
anyone have any suggestions that don't involve rooting (i really didn't want to have to root this phone, i thought it would be powerful enough to run good without custom roms, unlike say my old g1/g2/mytouch4gslide). i notice one of the biggest issues is chrome. it freezes a lot. i also get quite a few freezes while pulling down the notification shade.
also i'd consider rooting i suppose but only if there's a rom out there with absolutely zero known issues. don't get me wrong, i understand that the s3 is crazy powerful and my old phones weren't, and i shouldn't judge the rom scene based on the performance i got out of experimental roms on a g2 haha, but i never once rooted, installed a rom and then a month later said "yep this is still running great" on any of my old phones. if anyone has suggestions on a rom where EVERYTHING works as expected and nothing has problems, i'd consider it maybe. but at least for now i'd rather figure out a way to get it running better without rooting...
any ideas?

Besides the obligatory answers "download and try a few out yourself" and "your mileage may vary," when I first rooted this phone I had very good luck (speed, battery life, etc.) with the Jedi Invasion ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2013568
Besides that, I've heard that the Wicked ROM is great as well as CM10 (10.1 is stable but has a few issues that would dissuade most who are not willing to be on the cutting edge).
yea you know since i posted the thread i've been reading up on the newest roms and Wicked looks pretty damn perfect. if i do decide to root i'm gonna go with that but i'd still love to get this thing working at least for the next few months, with less issues WITHOUT rooting for now... but thanks for the response.

[Q] Im in Afghanistan..don't flip out..need info on a new rom download

I know everybody hates to see questions about what ROM should I download.
Answer....try one out and see what you like.
I am now in Afghanistan (again..this sh&t of a country).
I have always used Android revolution up to v15 and v16 because I started having random FC and freezes that I never got before (I always do a clean wipe and install).
After the freezing issues in v15 and v16 that I saw other people complain about, I switched over to Omega v16. Not bad, it works.
Right after that I have been stationed back in Afghanistan. I barley even have bandwidth to download 1 (will take about 4 - 5 days let alone several).
I saw Android Revolution is on v17; don't know if it fixed the random freezes. Don't have the time to surf through comments right now. First time on internet in a week.
Sorry, I will get to the point...all I care about is that my S-pen still works, which I remember reading alot of the 4.2 roms did not have working. Is that still the case?
I would like to try a 4.2 rom, since Omega and Revolution are 4.1.2. I don't care about extra features...just long as the s-pen works, smooth and does not FC all time time on my apps. The only thing I use my Note 2 out here for is internet, taking notes during briefs (that is why I need s-pen function) and games (fifa and real racing 3).
One last time sorry I am asking about rom recommendations, I know it irritates people. But when I am lucky on a good day to get 20k a sec download, I don't have much choice; and that is when the army does not black the internet out every time something bad happens .
Thank you for all of your options.
Hi,
I see you are from America but it does not give you the right to say a country is a piece of crap.
Let's all have respect.
For your asking of stability and what I recommend, stay with a 4.1.2 TouchWiz based ROM.

Wow, you think me being from America, I am just another American being arrogant.
I did not say anything about the people being crap, some of the nicest and thankful people I have ever met; but this country has been torn apart because of War the last 30 years. I really hope the people here get a better life after everybody leaves, but I have a bad feeling that is not going to happen and the country will have a civil war.
But after being here for over a total of 2 years in the last 3 years, getting rocketed everyday, I am allowed to give my opinion; feel free to come visit as a tourist and let me know how it turns out for you and what you think of Afghanistan.
Generally its best to avoid the 4.2 roms because of greatly inferior battery life when compared to the samsung based 4.1.2 roms. Its pretty much the only downside to the 4.2 roms because they do feel slicker.

I assume you would also require better battery performances as in my case? I'm using Slimbeans ROM at the moment which is 4.2.2. Everything works great, its my daily driver and the level of customization prebuilt is all that I could ask for now. However, I don't get the battery life that I could get from a Stock based ROM. If youre alright with 5hours screen on time and 12hours between charges then go for Slim beans.
