I have a few questions regarding unlocking the bootloader.
Does it matter what software i have on my phone?
Andriod Version 4.1.1 and Software number 3.20.401.1
I have found many guides such as:
http://www.theandroidsoul.com/how-to-unlock-htc-one-x-bootloader/
In these guides there is no mention of the software which makes me wonder if it is irrelevant.
Thanks!

I'm afraid not. Until s-off and super cid is achieved you can only run RUU's including .980 in their description. Also, you can't run one with a lesser version number than the one you already have installed.
It appears that you have the latest Optus Australian release available at present.

Since it is locked to Vodafone it must be vodafone branded, and if it's carrier branded generally I think it might be 1.01.0002. At least that was the case with my friend, who was 3 branded.

Just wanted to make sure that he will follow the correct instructions for his HBOOT lol - But you're right - obviously - branded = HBOOT 1.01.0002 (if there aren't some exceptions).
To answered your second question, there is no way (currently) to free SIM unlock it.
Try talking to the carrier.

And we have a winner!
But yes, there is post about that (like this).
Mainly:
Sim unlock for free, or S-Off? NO (at the moment at least)
Sim-unlock doesn't necessarily needs S-Off.
We can't sim unlock our V-s yet (for free). For $-s yes.
Moved to Q&A. Please post all questions there, thanks.
unlock code
I don't have idea about S-OFF and radio firmware changing.Whether you want to unlock your HTC One V from network lock. Then visit Unlock-Zone.com.Here they ask you country name, service provider name and IMEI number of your mobile. Then they help you to unlock your mobile phone.
Is there news to unlock carrier the one v

Whenever I try to use the unlock bootloader (htcdev.com) he told me I had to install the latest version 2.14.161.1.
But I have a newer version, my software number is 2.26.161.1 and even if I search for new updates, I only get the message that my version is already up to date.
I hope someone has an idea. I use a HTC Wildfire S A510e.
Android version: 2.3.5
Just proceed to Step 1............your bootloader is unlockable
I had a similar question and went direct to HTC for an answer. Here's what they said:
Thank you for contacting HTC regarding your HTC Wildfire S.
My name is Jonathan and I am a Technical Support Agent for the HTC Written Team.
I understand that you are looking to unlock the bootloader on your device.
I am sorry but the ROM that is available via our site is for devices on the previous software version and as such is not compatible with your phone. We are working to make further device and software version compatible, but it takes time to produce the relevant ROM for each device.
I would advise that you keep an eye on the HTC Dev site for when the correct ROM will be available so that you are able to unlock the bootloader.

I am running a Wildfire S A510e using Android 2.3.5 and software number 2.26.771.2. The HTC answer was very annoying as I have so much bloatware crap I want removed from my handset and, at the moment, I can't.

Hi, I am new in xda and I'm a HOX user from Malaysia (South East Asia region)
I need help rooting my HOX (CID: HTC_044)
My HOX's
Android version: 4.1.1(Jellybean - Official update)
Sense: 4+
Software Number: 4.14.707.24
SDK API: 4.63
I read lots of different posts in this forum and I couldn't understand everything.
Is my HOX counted as a Tegra-3 based HOX?(There are so many types of root tutorial based on the phone's "version") I don't know how to identify my HOX.
I read some posts who stated that Tegra-3 based HOX couldn't fastboot boot xxx.img, but they can only flash xxx.img
Thanks in advance ^o^
Xenon~
