Hello guys, I have HTC One V GSM which was recently unlocked and rooted by me. I don't remember how I got that but got it Rooted somehow.
Now Problem is I am unable to backup recovery, unable to install Rom, unable to install themes, after every reboot of following actions,
In Rom Manager
Reboot into recovery takes me to red question mark
The Rom you are using doesn't support OTA updates. The developer of this Rom needs to make the appropriate changes so their ROM support OTA update. Please contact ROM developer.
Installation Rom from sd card also shows red question mark.
In ROM Toolbox pro
Rom management
when i install MIUI (one of the ROMs available seen there) after reboot into recovery option same "red question mark"
unable to change font once I got them changed fortunately/unfortunately
so basically I don't know what to do. I don't even know what exactly can i do after Root else then deleting few pre installed apps
I am very very, in fact very, new to all these tech things just checked internet and did few things.
Please help me guys
1) don't use rom manager
2) it seems you don't have a recovery. Flash it again via fastboot
Thanks Mr Nooby for your reply
Since I am very new to these, did u mean the same procedure I did after unlocking bootloader? procedure of rooting?
Is there anyway I can stat over with new Root I mean fresh after Unlocked bootloader? Then may be I can re start installing Roms and tweaking phone?
Yeah you can flash roms and stuff. Remember that fastboot folder you used to root the phone? Put the recovery file (go for twrp recovery, you can find it in original development of this phone) in that folder, connect the phone in fastboot mode, open cmd and type "fastboot flash recovery nameofrecovery.img", it will send recovery to the phone. From there you can install roms. Never use rom manager, it bricks your phone. And whenever you flash a rom, remember to flash kernel or it will be in boot loop

Also pls post questions like this in Q&A thread...
E:/%20cant%20/open%20cache/recovery/command
this error comes when i recover after flashing fastboot..
have tried twrp too
it aslso says
reboot system now
apply update from external storage
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
apply update from cache
I don't really understand what could give you the problem. Tell the exact steps you are doing
steps are.. I have downloaded fastboot zip it has adb, adbwinapi.dll, adbwinusbapi.dll, fastboot
i have downloaded twrp.mg (openrecovery-twrp-2.5.0.0-primou)
Opened cmd from same folder typed fastboot openrecovery-twrp-2.5.0.0-primou or openrecovery-twrp-2.5.0.0-primou.img
then pressed recovery
phone restarted green circle thing and then Red triangle with exclam sign. then rebooted by own and nothing happened.
I might be wrong doing it but unable to do anyting.
Can I unroot and start again?
I am downloading HTC asia RUU
Downloading:
RUU_Buzz_Froyo_hTC_Asia_WWE_2.24.707.1_Radio_13.55.55.24H_3.35.20.10_release_161

See, you are taking wrong steps. In order to put recovery on phone you must type "fastboot flash recovery nameofrecovery.img", not all the stuff you are writing dude

Hey guys, first of all I'm a complete n00b to all of this stuff, so please bear with me and consider using layman type language with me. Some of you may think I shouldn't even be messing with this stuff with my limited knowledge, but I'm determined to get the best out of my Galaxy Nexus and generally learn quickly and follow directions well.
Here's the bullet-point run-down of what happened:
- Bought a Galaxy Nexus that was "yakjuux" and wasn't getting updates.
- Read through a thread on here on how to flash to "yakju". Did so successfully.
- I then wanted to root since my device was already wiped from unlocking bootloader or flashing some partition or something
- Followed this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=19583168#post19583168)
- Rebooted, saw the "Superuser" app and thought I nailed it.
- Saw an update for Jellybean, it requested a reboot before install
- Upon reboot I got a dreaded android on it's back with a red exclamation, nearly wet myself. Took battery out, put back in, phone booted normally. It didn't update to JB anymore and when I check for updates it doesn't show. I figured it'll come around again.
- Went to "superuser" app to update, it said it "Failed!" upon trying to gain root access. Upon reading around, downloaded SU Update Fixer from the store, failed gaining root access. Read some more, downloaded "Root Checker" app and it said my device was not rooted.
So where do I go from here? I'm tempted to just follow the 'flash to yakju' thread again and go back to a clean ROM and forget rooting, but maybe there's something simple I can do from here.
** One side note, in that rooting thread I mentioned above, I did not understand step #7 (7. Using CWM recovery, install su.zip that you downloaded in step 1) too clearly. I didn't understand how my phone could even get the su.zip file. So after reading some other rooting methods, I copy and pasted the .zip into the "Internal Storage" drive under My Computer > Samsung Phone > Internal Storage. Then using CWM Recovery on my phone just selected to install it from sdcard (since the Gnex doesn't have an sdcard) and it seemed to be a success. But I'm not sure if that was right. I assumed it was since I got the Superuser app.
Another thing that felt kind of wrong is that, when I flashed to yakju, it wiped my phone clean. I expected rooting to do the same thing, but it didn't (I think because my bootloader was already unlocked?). So I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it either.
Please help. And remember to please refer to things in dummy form. I only know things that involve the above, like using the cmd and typing fastboot and flashing files from a directory, etc.
Thank you in advance.

Re-install superuser the same way you did the first time. The OTA failed because you have a custom recovery installed. If you want to update to Jelly Bean, look into installing one of the JB ROMs in the development forums, or if you must have the OTA you'll have to flash the stock recovery and make sure everything else is stock as well. OTAs do not care if you are rooted or have an unlocked bootloader.
you can also install the OTA manually, heres my method
1) grab the link for yakju IMM76i > 4.1.1 from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1764536 and place that iin your sdcard. ALSO download this version of Superuser (chainfires one): http://download.chainfire.eu/197/SuperSU/CWM-SuperSU-v0.93.zip and place that in your sdcard too.
2) install clockworkmod recovery again the same way you did before, using fastboot flash recovery recovery.img, press vol down twice in the bootloader and go straight into the recovery.
3) install the OTA zip you downloaded and placed in your sdcard
4) clear cache and fix permissions (might not be necessary but you can do it just incase)
5) reboot, you should now have stock jellybean. the ClockworkMod recovery would be removed at this point because stock android has a file in system which replaces the stock recovery after every reboot, unless you delete that file.
6) go back into the bootloader, flash recovery as before and again boot straight into the recovery. this time flash the superuser zip you downloaded.
7) reboot. should be all sorted now

Thanks for the fast response.
So basically, I just copy and paste su.zip again into my Internal Storage on my computer. Put my phone into Recovery Mode, plug it in, find and install that su.zip again, and then reboot?
Also, this is something I didn't know: So if you are rooted, you cannot update "normally"? I will always have to flash over the latest ROM?
Thanks.

They only care that the recovery and /system are stock, and even then (as I said) don't care if you're rooted. Rooting doesn't matter. Having a custom recovery does. They are not the same thing. Also, read through ||Nexus|| response.

OK, thank you so much. I'm going to do exactly this. When I "fastboot flash" these over again, will they just replace the old ones? Or do I have to uninstall the ones already on my phone or something. I feel like it may get cluttered or something lol, sorry if that's stupid.

no, youre just reflashing the recovery which wont affect anything else. once you reboot it will revert back to the stock recovery anyway, so youll be able to get future OTA updates just fine.
edit: yes itll just be replacing the recovery, nothing else

Wait, actually I don't think the JB installed now that I'm staring at the screen properly.
It went Installing update...

Also, the drivers I thought I had for my phone seem to be messing up and in device manager it says "Full" with an exclamation point. I'm not sure why.
Sorry for the late responses as a n00b I'm stuck with 5 minute intervals here.

Canada.
I just tried reinstalling the drivers and everything and for some reason it's not working. I flash Clockwork Recovery, I see the JB.zip, but when I click to install it it says "assert failed" and has the dead Android. Not sure if it's a driver issue, but I redid the Universal Naked one I had before that worked.

Guys,
I'm a newbie to rooting and unlocking world, and I think have done too many things to screw my phone as much as I can.
Device is a PrimeOU based. (India)
Trying to recall the series of accidents that I committed since last 24hrs on my HTC ONE V.
1. Unlocked the bootloader successfully.
2. Rooted the device successfully and installed CWM and copied the file mentioned in this post
3. Entered the recovery mode, backed up my previous ROM from CWM.
4. Flashed the ROM directly (Later I came to know there were a some other steps missed here).
5. And of course, post flashing CYANOGENMOD 10 was stuck in the boot screen.
6. Went back to recovery mode and here I made a biggest mistake, I partitioned the SD card as the CWM logs were showing that one of the ext partition could not be mounted. Because of this, I LOST ALL MY BACKUP DATA.
7. Again, referred one more post from here .. tried copying files, played around but nothing worked.
8. Flashed again from some windows based tool (Can recall its name, its not in my browser history as well). Installed TWAR.
9. Started searching for the stock ROM and found one here
Tried to recover the base ROM but no luck.
10. Found that I should try with RUU to resume my stock ROM. relocked phone flashed the image again.
I see error 155, which says that I should try with another RUU version, but the verdict is that hboot version is older.... came through another post that at this moment there is no RUU version available that suits the hboot compatibility as of now.
Conclusion:
I have now understood, that should not have messed up so much with my phone without any proper education on android rooting unlocking.
Device is now flashed with some version of RUU and recovery mode takes me to default android recovery screen which again reboots the phone.
Is my device bricked? Can we get it back functioning normally? Can we try the below?
1. Is there any way I can recover the deleted backup on my SD card and try recover again? Does the card get formatted completely if a new partition is created.?
2. Should I take it to an authorized service center? Its no longer in warranty, so they will always be happy to get things done for a price.
3. Should I take it to an unauthorized shops who can get back my phone working?
Any help is highly appreciated. Please let me know if you have any other advice too...
Thanks in advance,
Sumanth

If you can't use a ruu, then you need a custom rom. In order to do that you need to unlock and root again first

Hi Nooby - Successfully unlocked and rooted per the steps in the thread. Now my phone boots up and stops in the CYANOGEMOD boot page, which I had tried to install at the first instance. (Similar case just before loosing my backup)
I shall continue with this stock ROM for ONE V mentioned in the post.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1647052
Observations:
1. I see that CWM or TWRP is one of the requirements for this to work, but I have lost either of these after flashing multiple times...
2. Instructions also say that I should use "Sense kernel Titanium-KISS or Stock kernel".
3. There was an earlier failed attempt to install a CYANOGENMOD 10 but not sure if I'm using a Stock Kernel.
Please advice.
Regards,
Sumanth

Ok this is twrp recovery http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1721749 download it and put it in fastboot folder, then connect the phone in fastboot mode, open cmd, locate your fastboot folder and type fastboot flash recovery nameofrecovery.img, then all you need to do is flash the right kernel and your phone will work normally
---------- Post added at 02:11 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:06 PM ----------
If now you have cm10, download this kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1954967 and put it in your fastboot folder, connect your phone in fastboot mode, locate the folder in cmd and type fastboot flash boot nameofkernel.img, when you type that you should see on your phone a loading bar on top right of the screen. When this is done, just reboot your phone and wait some minutes for the rom to boot
---------- Post added at 02:31 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:11 PM ----------
ok so, now iim on the computer i can write properly u.u now that you have unlocked and rooted again, the first thing you do is flash the twrp recovery via fastboot (i guess you know how to do it if you already unlocked and rooted). once the recovery is installed you can go 2 ways:
1) Use sense rom, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1647052 this one is very good, almost like stock rom. In order to do that you follow these steps:
a) download TITANIUM KISS kernel from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1765687
b) put the kernel in fastboot folder and flash it, you need to open cmd, locate your fastboot folder, connect the phone in fastboot mode and type fastboot flash boot nameofkernel.img, on the screen you will see the loading bar (it's very quick), once its done, reboot into recovery.
c)from the recovery, go to advanced->mount usb storage, the computer will open your phone folder, just take the rom and copy it to your sd card, when it's done copying, just do unmount usb storage.
d)from the recovery, do wipe->factory reset, it will delete the old rom on your phone
e)now you are ready to flash the rom, from the recovery goto install and select the rom from the list.
It will take like 5-6 minutes to boot the first time, so dont worry and wait.
2) Use cyanogenmod10, then you need hellboy kernel and the rom of course. steps:
a)download hellboy kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1954967
b)same as above
c)same as above
d)same as above
e)same as above
this will also take some minutes to boot the first time. Once its booted you wont have play store and stuff (only on cyanogen, sense has it already), so you need to do this:
f)mount usb storage
g)download gapps from here http://www.mediafire.com/?k2cb1trw8s2oio2
h)copy gapps to your sd card
i)reboot into recovery and install them, reboot the phone and you are all done!

You need to flash twrp first then titanium kiss then factory reset and rom at last

Nooby - TWRP flash Completed I'm now through TWRP successfully.
I open the link to titanium kiss download, shows me a load of file. understand that OC-UV are a kind of presets, excluding them, which one to download? Probably the recent one?

Update: The ROM upgrade failed. Copied the 393 mb file into the storage sd and tried install post flashing the kernel.
See an error in the recovery that the installation zip could not be opened. I too see an error while opening from my winrar in PC.
Suspect corrupt donwload file. Started new download , 403 MB ... Update to follow...

yes it's corrupted, my rc9 rom is 403mb too, you need to download again. Before flashing the rom remember to factory reset, it's always better
hi i got htc one x running jely bean 4.1 -- cid j_15 -- i unlocked the boot loader successfully -- i copied the supersu to the phone then i booted into recovery but in recovery i got a red triangle over a phone so cant extract the supersu -- i tried volume up plus power but no menu happen -- how to complete the rooting
note- i want to do rooting because i want to install a custom rom because my phone keep getting restarted every know and then by itself
What recovery do you use ? If you are on stock recovery, then you have to flash a custom one first...
To do so go to the clockworkmod recovery website and download the Touch recovery for you'r model, then you need to put you'r phone into fastboot usb mode and run fastboot flash recovery recovery.img, and reboot into recover...
From there you go to install zip, and choose SuperSU.zip, without extracting it... Once it finishes, reboot the phone and you are done.
copy SuperSU on your phone
Flash this
https://www.dropbox.com/s/od4y330zg5brviw/recovery.img
go into recovery (Strongly recommend nandroid backup), install zip from SD card, Click super SU

How does that progress you ? Serious question. If i asked everybody to thank me with a helpfull post i would be well over 10000 thanks. But i don't .... I think its kinda rude in a way, feels the same to me when a developer is asking for money !
He will see the button....maybe not in this case but maybe the next. He thanked you personally. If you are in it for the amount of thanks you get then you are here for the wrong reasons !
Sorry, I didn't mean to be rude.
Nor do I want to collect many likes.
SOLVED
So today I decided I would try to install a custom OS/ROM whatever it's called on my HTC One X. I unlocked the bootloader successfully without any problems. Then I went on to root the phone, and this is where it all went wrong. I found a tutorial and followed it to the tiniest detail. I am unable to link to it because I am a new user. When my phone rebooted it went to the "HTC Quietly Brilliant" boot screen. I left it there for 30 minutes and it still didn't move on. What do I do now? I am a super noob at this, and I admit that I am an idiot for not reading more up on it first, it just all seems so super complicated.
Thanks in advance for any help and guidance.

No, no error, it said "Daemon launched successfully" or something along those lines, my phone turned off and turned back on to the HTC boot screen.
Ok, try this: if the phone is still on keep the power button pressed till it restarts and press also vol down button until you arenin the bootloader; if the device is off, enter bootloader keeping power and vol down button pressed... Now my suggestion is to flash a custom recovery and a custom rom, you will get root privileges and the phone will work again...

If you are unlocked (you see it in bootloader) you can flash a custom recovery and a custom rom. Look up for your favorite Recovery and flash it.
Download the img File to directory where you have the fastboot files and run this code in command prompt
Code:
fastboot flash recovery name_of_recovery.img
After it you can boot into Bootloader and turn to recovery to get access to phone and SD Card/flash Rom
Did you flash boot.img and erased the cache?

Okay, so I successfully flashed TWRP and launched into recovery mode with it. How I get the custom ROM files on my SD card, when I plug my phone into my computer with USB it doesn't show up in the drives section, so I can't open up the SD card.
Another thing is that with the latest version of TWRP for my phone touch doesn't work in the recovery mode. There's a version that does, but it says it doesn't have USB mount or something like that. What's the next step?
You need to mount sd card via recovery, and having the touchscreen working is better as it will be easier to move inside aroma installer... Use philz recovery (if you want a sense rom use 5.15.9, if you want kitkat use the last version), enter the recovery, plug the phone into pc, mount sdcard via recovery, copy the zip over it and follow the instructions to install rom... You can find the instructions in every rom thread op... Ask if you need more help

Thanks for all the help, I am really starting to get a better understanding of how this actually works. I flashed Philz recovery and went into recovery with it. Then I went to mount and mounted USB Storage. Is this the right thing? It still doesn't show up on my PC

which version did you flash? sometimes it keeps a couple of minutes before popping up the sdcard in pc, but i ensure you that 5.15.9 usb mout feature works fine... some users (me too) faced some issues with some 6.x.y version (sorry, i don't remember which one as i still use sense rom and so philz 5.15.9)

I flashed latest version 6.19.3. There are only 3 versions available as far as I can see. They are:
6.19.3
6.12.8
6.07.9
I'll try flashing the two other versions and see what happens.

Thank you! It finally showed up on my PC after a minute. I wanted to try Android 4.4.2 KitKat custom ROM "Carbon" so I want to ask a bit of an off-topic question. What are the GApps thing that I am told to install with the ROM? Why are they so important, what do they do?

those are google apps (i bet you understood what they are for just reading the full name ) i'm sorry to tell you that philz 5.15.9 can't flash 4.4.2 android, so you should update it... but now you have the zip on sdcard at least... give a look at latest TWRP you can find here in the OP #2 (everyhing should work with this version, but i still didn't test it, so i can't ensure it... i told you to use Philz 5.15.9 because i was 100% sure USB mount works with that recovery, and we needed to put a rom zip on sdcard ) now that you understood how things work, you can choose the recovery you want according to your reqirements have a nice flash man, and feel free to ask me if you need any further help

I flashed to the newest Philz recovery again and successfully installed both ROM and GApps. Rebooting phone now, I hope it works... Been on HTC screen for a while though.

have you flashed boot.img via fastboot and erased cache via fastboot? the commands are
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot erase cache
remember that first boot can take a while (in some cases up to ten minutes)

Hi all,
I hope someone can help as I am at my wits and sanity's end.
I am trying to install twrp into my phone to make a factory backup before rooting. I have unlocked the boot loader via htcdev all OK, I have followed the guide online to install twrp but it just will not work, I have tried various methods and every one of them failed. ADB and fastboot are installed OK, when I type "fastboot devices" it shows the phone and serial number, HTC sync is installed and updated, SDK is installed, everything the guide said to do I have done but it just won't flash. Error when I try to flash twrp every time. It is the latest version etc (I think) the twrp image is in the adb/fastboot folder and the cmd was opened from the folder.
I really don't know what I am doing wrong, can anyone please advise?
Thanks in advance
Gary Nixon

hmmm, not sure on that one, put one in and see
I think i may know the problem - S-ON - would this prevent anything being flashed?
Have you tried re-downloading TWRP to make sure it isn't a corrupted download?

no, if your bootloader is unlocked you don't need to be s-off to flash recovery. Are you flashing the correct twrp for your phone
2.8.7.1_CPTB-B1-hima.img
its cool i got it to work, next question how do i get the custom rom zip file into the phone

download it, connect tehphone to pc, move the rom zip to either extsd or internal sd, boot to recovery select the zip and flash.don't forget to make a backup, and to wipe dalvik cache, cache, system, and data, under advanced wipe. nothing else then install the rom
what was causing the problem before, that you couldn't get recovery to flash, just curious
tbh i actually used the m9 toolkit by Squabbi - did it in 5 minutes
donation on the way
