Galaxy S II SGH-T989D Soft bricked - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Hey guys.
So I got this Galaxy S II SGH-T989D from my friend, he just gave it to me.
Anyways, I think it is soft bricked. When I stick the battery in, it turns on, displays the samsung logo, then says Koodo with a loading bar underneath. Once the loading bar is complete the screen just goes black, and the device will vibrate every 2 seconds.
Don't really know how to reset this.
Any help is appreciated
Thanks!

if you can go download mode please flash a stock firmware for t989d and flash it using odin.. get the stock firmware from samfirmware.com if u wish.. goodluck

Thanks Ill try!

Okay when I try it put it in download mode, it displays the warning screen about installing a new firmware blah blah, and then before I can do anything the screen flashes, I see blue and then it just goes back to a black screen and vibrating.

When all else fails I suggest opening Kies on your computer and selecting "emergency firmware recovery"

Sounds to me like a power button problem, not a firmware problem. Could be wrong, but the black screen and vibrating sound like the tell-tale symptoms. Check this thread out: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1931310&highlight=power+button
There are many, many threads about this.

Okay so I took the entire phone apart and removed the power button. I tried booting then, and it still does it.
So it is definitely not a button sticking issue

Same issue
I'm having the exact same issue. I've also disassembled my phone and have ruled out the button issue. All fix guides I've encountered thus far require the "volume up + volume down + power button" boot method which is non-responsive on my phone. It continues to vibrate every two seconds. The furthest I get is have halfway through the Samsung load screen before the screen goes black.

it sounds like it might be a bootloader problem, I can't seem to find the thread right now but I know i just saw it on here that a guy in oregon will reset you bootloaders for $25(you pay for shipping), but there was a few people on there also saying that he had done a great job fixing theres. he works for a shop that repairs mobile devices, you should look through the general and q&a for bootloader issue threads i know its in there somewhere.

[Q] Hard bricked or soft bricked?

OK so I felt my phone continuously vibrating in my pocket, so I held the power button because that usually makes it stop vibrating and start powering up. However, this time it just keeps vibrating. So I took the battery out and when I put it back in, the phone automatically turned on and the Samsung logo came on the screen. But before it could get to the cynanogenmod logo on the screen the phone shuts down and keeps on vibrating. It won't go into download or recovery mode without shouting off or vibrating. And more recently it won't go into the modes at all. But like three strange things are happening. 1. It will start up, show the Samsung logo, and then the cynanogenmod logo but will get stuck on the cynanogenmod logo and will go back to vibrating. 2. I got it to completely start up, I could see the home screen and everything but then the phone froze, turned off, and started vibrating. 3. I decided to try and charge it because it stop vibrating and I thought it was dead. And when I hooked it up, it showed the screen with the battery loading. But only for 30 seconds at the most.
So I was wondering is there anyway I can fix this?
Ok so if this were to happen to me i would kill the battery, plug chatter into computer, take out battery ands put back in plug phone into charger and hold volume up and down button and see if you can get into download mode. Iff you can then just use Odin to stock the phone. Off not then idk what to say.

Thanks for replying but I can't get into download or recovery mode.
Sounds awfully similar with this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1783404
If your power button is having issues, it can be repaired. So you are not soft or hard bricked. It is just a faulty button. Some people managed to unstuck the button with a small screwdriver.
Sounds like your power button is stuck, there was a thread about this issue and I think a fix, do a quick search on power button sticking.

Thanks for the suggestion. But I've tried wiggling the power button around and it doesn't work.
Thanks guys, I'll search around. But I'm starting to give up hope because I've messed with the power button and it doesn't seem to be stuck. But really thank you.
It's the actual switch on the logic board, it needs to be replaced. Cheers

[Q] Cant even get into download mode - reboot loop

ok so it got a bit wet, then started rebooting randomly once or twice (when i say a bit wet, it was some sticky kids medicine)
it stopped doing that but the power button was a bit sticky so i applied suction to get any residue out of there and the button stopped sticking.
but now its on a reboot loop.
it goes to the gt n7100 screen, then goes off then back to the n7100 screen.
ive tried going into download mode, but it gets to the "warning custom OS" screen, i press volume up and it just restarts again.
ive tried plugging it in to charge and it brings up the battery icon and a circle wait timer then after 10 seconds or so it flashes again to the wait timer (which is not turning)
what else can i do to make it work? is there not a pin button for factory reset anymore?
It got wet. So it's not a software based problem.
Return it to service center and see if they can fix it.

[Help] Infinite vibrate boot loop, bricked? please guide me! ><

Hey guys,
I recently installed a new rom but it kept turning off if i take any action so I used Odin and went back to stock unrooted. It was okay for half a day
and it started to shut off randomly as well.
*NOW it's in a constant boot loop. Once I insert the battery it vibrates and turns on by itself and shows the Tmobile logo for a sec and turns off -> vibrate x infite showing black screen
I was told that this could be a "sticky power button, stuck power button" so I opened the housing and used air can, and kinda cleaned and messed around a bit but I dont see how it will fix anything (Suggestions please!) Didn't look like it was sticky or stuck at all @@
I can't get into download / recovery mode because phone just shuts off before I can do anything and vibrates over and over.
Is my phone bricked? or that sticky power button issue? I heard theres not really a simple cure for the stuck power button.... is there?
Does samsung do anything about this even though device is out of warranty? I'm so confused atm >< please share your thoughts and guide me please!

Try holding down the volume up and volume down, then hold down the power button until it vibrates twice then release the power then volume buttons. Not sure if you have tryed this yet but that should boot you into recovery.
I dont think that your phone is bricked. I had the same problem and thought the same thing you have. That maybe it bricked or what not. I tried flashing different roms and that didnt work. I went to a repair shop and I got my power button repairs and I flashed it back to stock 4.1.2 unrooted. It has been working fine for me ever since. You might just need to get yours repaired. Hope this helps.
it's not bricked, this happened to me about a month ago. Your power button is broken most likely and needs to be replaced. I got mine fixed for $40.

Google search is a prerequisite for troubleshooting. Here's a couple links which might help, if it's actually a bad power button.

This is the power button for sure.
I had the same problem, and all I did was to open the screws and clean the contacts with alcohol and clean up the edges with tooth pick and put everything back again. Tried couple of times and that fixed my issue.
Hope that helps. .

[q] help please!

So I rooted my Lg G2 just fine, I've done jailbreaks and such in the past and consider myself tech savvy. However after trying to install a custom ROM on my phone, I got these white lines to where I couldn't see my screen. I found a fix for it and tried to conquer that myself as well. As I proceeded to flash a jdi kernel onto my G2 to get rid of the white lines and lack of display, I got an error and put myself into a boot problem. When I turn my phone on, I get a secure booting error everytime and my screen goes black. I have tried countless times to use the hard reset feature but I cannot get the it to come up with pressing with volume down and power buttons. I can't get into download mode either. My screen goes black within seconds and just sits there. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP IN ANY WAY POSSIBLE.
Please.
I really need any sort of help or direction. I've tried everything I can think of.
How did you try to go into download mode?

Greetings, here's what I did, I booted my phone into download mode by pressing and holding the volume up button, and quickly plugging the usb cable into my phone(make sure it's connected to the computer), wait until the device is charged at 100%(you will know it's fully charged when you see something like this "B100", turn off your phone and hold the power button and volume down button at the same time until you see the LG Logo, once you've seen the LG Logo, QUICKLY press and hold the power button and the volume down button at the same time adain, and you should boot into recovery mode.[emoji4]
If you made a backup of your previous Rom, you can now restore it.[emoji106]
