I'm having problems w/ my GS3 after accidentally restarting w/ no OS.
See original post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=41306538&postcount=5979
I got a response, here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=41306968&postcount=5980
I'm unsure of what exactly they meant in the response, but I found a walkthrough, here: http://www.androidjunkies.com/how-to-unroot-att-galaxy-s3-flash-stock-ucdlk3-firmware/
I feel like I've done this, but I'll try it out anywho. I'm wondering:
1. Could it an issue of kernels?
2. Would it help if I wiped everything on my sd card(s)? If so, how do I do that?
3. Could it be an issue of having/not having my sd cards mounted?
Thank you for your generous help.

I installed triangleaway and it's saying that I'm not rooted, but somehow still have access to CMW.
Thoughts?
I'm going to try all the other steps.

CMW or any recovery for that matter has nothing to do with any rom or whatever you are running. Recoveries on this device are on their own partition.
If you are trying to go back to stock:
1.) Go here and download the correct firmware for your device. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1968625
2.) Flash that firmware with odin.
3.) After that's done, reboot into recovery and factory reset.
4.) After that's done you will be fully stock.
5.) You should really consider reading up on all of this stuff. If you don't, you take the risk of bricking your expensive device and rendering it useless.

Thank you so much. I know some, but not everything. I'm missing pieces to the puzzle.
I just tried to make a nandroid of my stock rom as is right now and I got the error:
Code:
No /sdcard/ .android_secure found. Skipping backup of applications on external storage. No sd-ext found. Skipping backup of sd-ext. Generating md5 sum... Backup complete!
Why would it say that about my sd card? I feel like directories on my sd card(s) aren't lining up w/ what android wants.
Thoughts?

That's not an error. CMW or any recovery for that matter will not make nandroids of anything on your external sdcard partition. Its supposed to say that.

You're not reading what I posted is why you don't understand. Its very simple. Root has nothing to do with recovery. CMW is a recovery. Not a root method. Just because you have a custom recovery doesn't mean you have root. You have to root your device if you want it rooted.

Ah, ok. I've always that they were synonymous.
But here's where I'm confused. I've used oden and have unroot/rooted about 5 times in the last few days. Also, while using Oden, it gives me the i9300 label at the top. Is that normal/correct?

You don't want to use anything i9300 related. Please only use what I've linked you in an earlier post. All of this is very simple and I've given you all of the steps to do this correctly. There's no need for you to be making this complicated. Everything you need is all right in front of you here.

Thank you so much. But I don't get why it says my phone is a i9300. It's an ATT phone. When I plug into my comp, oden tells me it's a i9300 phone. I'm afraid I really messed it up.
I just wiped my cache and it says

Cache wipe complete.
E:unknown volume for path [sd-ext]
Dalvik Cache wiped
Should I be concerned if it says "E:unknown volume for path [sd-ext]"??

My recommendation: do not try to root until you know all of the common problems that are encountered for the device model your using. Your problems here should have been able to been resolved within 15 to 20 minutes (not including setting your phone back up). Had you done your due diligence beforehand and learned more, this would have been easy and never an issue.
I would highly suggest you stick with the stock rom until you have thoroughly educated yourself. While I am not a developer, I respect those who are. As such I take upon myself to learn as much as I can so I do not have to bug them about any problems I run into.

[TUTORIAL][S-OFF!]290 MB Data Partition!!! & Installing CyanogenMod 7 Step By Step!
Now with a video tutorial for download!!!
A while ago I came across a great scrip from Firerat and I figured it was time to highlight it again as he's updated it constantly.
I thought I would take the time to put together a tutorial on how to do the following:
1/ Change the size of your /System, /Data, and /Cache partitions to give you a HUGE amount more /Data space for efficiently sized ROM's like CyanogenMod 7.x
2/ Show you how to install CyanogenMod 7.x with these custom partition sizes and verify that they are as expected.
What you will need:
A prerequisite is a custom recover, preferably Alquez's Unofficial CWM Recovery 5.0.2.6
1/ To download and place on your SD Card the latest build of Alquez's CM7.x. (Do not unzip!)
2/ Google apps (GAPPS) for CyanongenMod 7.x, which you will also place on your SD card (Do not unzip!)
3/Firerat's 1.5.8 MTD Boot Script which you will also place on you SD card (Do not unzip!)
4/ Firerat's 1.5.8 MTD Recovery Script which you will also place on you SD card (Do not unzip!)
5/ The custom mtdpart.txt file that defines your custom partition sizes. Place this on your SD card in the same folder as the boot and recovery scripts. For ease of explanation let's just put all the required files on the root of your SD card.
Now you have all the files that you are going to need it's time to begin:
1/ Alter the txt file to suit your need but do not hit enter. Make sure there is no carriage return taking you to a second linein the file.
{

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
2/Now save it as "mtdpartmap.txt" (For CM7x you can use 145 20 with no worries). Don't listen to people telling you that 125 5 is a good setting. They don't know what CM7.x you are using and I do. Trust me.
3/ As mentioned earlier download and opy the recovery file, the boot file, the mtdpartmap.txt, Alquez's latest CM7.x nightly, and the latest version of GAPPS to the root of your SD card
5/Remove the rear cover of your phone
6/ Remove your phone's battery and replace it while unplugged
7/ Ensure you have a good charge before you begin (Say 30% or more)
8/ Press and hold Volume Down+Power at the same time to reboot into CWM or Razor recovery. (We will be using CWM Unofficial 5.0.2.6 for this tutorial)
9/ Perform a Nandroid backup of your current ROM to make sure you have something to go back to should you wish!!!
10/ Choose wipe data/Factory reset from the menu and follow the prompts.
11/ Go to the Mounts and Storage Menu and follow the prompts to format your system partition.
12/ Go back to the main menu and choose Install zip from SD card and follow the prompts to install the Recovery zip that will set your mount points for your partitions and give you the space you are looking for. (WHEN DONE BE CAREFUL! THERE IS ANOTHER IMPORTANT STEP TO PERFORM HERE IN THE NEXT STEP!!!)
**Notice it now says to wipe system, cache, and data partitions then reboot to recovery. Very important! This is the #1 reason why this fails for people. Read it carefully.
Now here's how to do it!:
1/ Return to the Mounts and Storage Menu
2/ Format the Cache, Data, and System partitions by following the prompts. (DO NOT FORMAT ANYTHING ELSE AND BE CAREFUL TO CHOOSE SYSTEM NOT SD CARD!!!)
Now for part three...
Part 3:..
1/ Go to advanced menu and reboot to recovery
2/ If you are restoring a NANDROID backup do so now using backup/restore and restoring the NANDROID backup you wish to put on the new partitions but beware about trying to restore something onto the new cache and system partitions that is too big for them!!!
**Note! From here on in we are going to skip the screen shots of Install zip from SD, and confirming it. If you haven't gotten this down by now it's perhaps time to head to your local nerd and get him/her or he-she to do this for you.
3/ Installing CM7.x install zip from SD
4/ Install the Google apps GAPPS zip from the SD
5/ Install the boot portion of the script from the SD card. This portion allows your device to find the right start and end points for the newly resized partitions that you created.
**NOTE!!! You must rerun this portion of the script every time you do a wipe and install or wipe and NANDROID restore! If you do not your device will become stuck at the boot splash screen. So keep this script file on your SD card!
6/ Return to recovery main menu and reboot device and enjoy your roomy CM7.x install!
Now:
Let's confirm through Terminal Emulator that your partitions are actually changed!
-Click on the centre home button on the bottom of your screen to bring up the all apps list.
-Scroll across to the T's and load Terminal Emulator by clicking on it.
-Once inside Terminal Emulator type the following followed by Return/Enter on your virtual keyboard:
"busybox df -h"
-This will bring up the list of all the partitions on your system and as you can see your Data partition is now 290 MB, your Cache partition is now 20 MB and your System partition is now 145 MB with 8.8 MB remaining on your system partition. Just enough for integrating updates to your system apps into the System partition.
So that's it!
Now how about moving ahead to my LINK2SD prepping and configuring tutorial and my Speed up your GPS CWM flash update to top it all off!
Well done!

Well CM7 is a speedy ROM as it's well tweaked to begin with and obviously has a low overhead due to the size.
This gives you an additional 120 MB of internal memory! Combine that with LINK2SD and you've got a phone virtually unlimited for apps.
Glad the tutorial helped.
One more thing...
Even though the tutorial show 1.58 beta files the linked files are actually 1.58 final. A little added bonus.
Thanks for the PM question so I could clarify that and please click THANKS if if you appreciate this tutorial.

So, overall this increases the internal memory for apps am I right?

isn`t it easier to flash cm, then just boot into recovery and install data 2 sd, after partitioning your sd card ext4 1 gb + rest fat32 ?
What exactly do you have to do with 1.5.8 MTD Boot Script zip file?
I try to install another ROM (circle battery - change the battery icon) and when I was going to reboot, my phone get stucked at the CyanogenMod logo. It reproduced it again and again. Should I reinstall 1.5.8 MTD Boot Script zip file after doing this or what? Do you know the correct way to install it?
Besides, I pretty good tutorial. Too clearly explanated.
You have too flash the boot script after you flash a new ROM or a backup. That's explained.

Do what you wish of course.
I prefer link2sd and a load of internal fast memory for booting and important apps. A distinguishing feature that data2sd doesn't have.
If your SD card fails you still have your most important stuff with you. Can't say that for DATA2SD or DATA2WHATEVER, etc...

Ok. That's what I thought but I think I did it wrong or something. So the steps are this:

2. Go to install zip from sd and select the boot.
3. Install it.
4. Reboot the phone.

Yes. Of course this is for a backup or different rom or something. You still have to do the recovery scrip to resize for your initial resizing.

You know, I've tried (probably) every single method posted on these boards about flashing CM7, and yet I can't get it to work properly. This is really the most step-by-step tutorial I've seen and I thought it would work, but no, still no data connection.
With other methods I've tried, they've either disabled both Wi-Fi and mobile data connection, just one of the two, or there's a missing phone/dialer app.
With this one, the Wi-Fi's working, but I still have no data connection. Any ideas as to why this could be?

Did you try the libril fix? What is your radio version?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21147430#post21147430
If you have a different RUU that Euro 2.3.5 then grab your own libril.so from /system/lib on your RUU install and save it to your SD.
Re-install CM7 and replace and set permissions on libril.so
I've followed this tut d33p, but my phone still displays total 150mb internal storage, why?
Strange, I've used this mod also a month ago and it works great.
However I've used slightly different instructions.
Here we go:
put all the required data on the root of your sd card
reboot in recovery
take nandroid backup
go to mounts - format system
factory reset
advanced - wipe dalvic cache
install custom recovery script
reboot in recovery
restore nandroid backup
install custom boot script
reboot
This worked for me, don't know if it works for you guys.

My 16GB of internal memory is about 14-15GB full. If I want to do a nandroid backup via CWM, it needs about 2-3GB of free space on /sdcard. Thus, I have to free up about 1-2GB if I want to do it. Now, if somehow I can use CWM or some script to do a nandroid and have it saved directly to my PC, I would not have to free up space on my device. Understand?

Sure.
CWM doesn't backup /data/media, correct?
ADB would allow you to backup all of that, even app data. You can even use 'dd' to backup full partitions/folders, not sure if you can use dd over adb shell though.
Anyways, can't think of anything else right now.
Perhaps use OTG storage and a Symlink?
If you linked /sdcard/clockworkmod to the OTG it should write direct to your mounted stick...
Target and source would both have to be ext...
Edit: You would probably have to link /data/media/clockworkmod, but you know what I mean...

Hmmm... it would be good if we could use dd over adb, but I'm not sure you could specify a folder on your PC as the destination.

Thanks. That would probably work. Ideally though, I would be able to do it with the target being fat/fat32, but I'm not sure that would be possible.
You would probably need a modified recovery?
Other phones write to fat on the sd, but since our virtual sd is ext I'm not sure recovery supports fat (though I suspect Koush writes all his recoveries along the same lines, and modifies as little as possible). Either way, I'm pretty sure symlinking doesn't support fat...
I took a look at Chainfires Stick Mount thread, and he states specifically that it doesn't support ext. He may be a good source though, and he's pretty responsive...

Interested in the outcome. OTG and b/u to "external sd" sounds promising, and this thread answers a question I'd been wondering about, is it possible to b/u via adb and NOT have the nandroid saved on the "internal sd" and to the PC instead and then push it to the phone so I have a b/u of my b/u.
Edit: damnit, should've read the last 2 posts, back to the drawing board.
I'm very interested in finding a way to do this as well. I'd really like to encrypt my phone's storage, but that's somewhat impractical at present... you lose the ability to take nandroid backups, not to mention flashing zips, unless you're willing to perform a full userdata reset first.
I keep hoping that CockworkMod recovery will gain support for encrypted storage in future. Sadly, to date I've been unable to get a response from the developer... I guess it's anyone's guess at present.

Not sure where you are going with this, but anyway, as I had mentioned, I want to do an nandroid backup, so I would want:
/dev/block/platform/omap/omap_hsmmc.0/by-name/system
and
/dev/block/platform/omap/omap_hsmmc.0/by-name/userdata
but for the second, I don't want the entire thing, I want it to skip /data/media, just like a nandroid does.

OK, about backing up system, here we go. About doing the same with userdata and skipping /data/media, we'll discuss this later.
So, this is how to backup the system partition to your windows / linux / mac /BSD system using ADB, and having a rooted phone with BusyBox Pro installed.
1) Put the phone in ADB mode so you can run busybox commands there and so android is not running.
2) Install on windows Filezilla Server, create a user with no password (in this case will be scandiun), set the home dir with full permissions and with enough free space, and set timeouts to 0. Set port to 40 for example. Start the server.
3) run via adb the following commands in order:
Code:
su
cd /data
mkfifo myfifo
ftpput -v -u scandiun -P 40 COMPUTER_IP p11.img myfifo &
dd if=/dev/block/platform/omap/omap_hsmmc.0/by-name/system of=myfifo bs=512
jobs
fg 1
4) Check that you receive the files on your computer
5) Mount the img with DiskInternals Linux Reader and check its contents.
Tips:
- Fifos only can be made on linux native filesystems, for example on a FAT partition is not possible.
- Reading from a partition does not modify it.
- The bs should be adjusted to the partition block size.

I honestly haven't had time to try it out yet, but it is on my to-do list. Hopefully soon, and thanks again.
I've already rooted and unlocked my bootloader and I'm just about to load a custom ROM, however where do I put the files so when I wipe/factory reset they don't get deleted? Thanks.
Your files don't get deleted. Only data and apps on android partition

Anywhere outside /system. i.e. place them on the part of your sd card where your pics, music, etc... live.
Really? That doesn't seem right for some reason...I just unlocked & rooted my girlfriends new Verizon Nexus but didn't put a ROM on it right then (which I should have done ), and during that process all of her photos and apps were deleted. I luckily had backed up photos, sms backups, etc. off of the device so I was able to transfer those back, but it was bone stock (like nothing on it at all) after that process. Is that "wipe" different than the "wipe data/factory reset" we have to do before going onto most of the ROMs for the Nexus?
Sorry about my ignorance...I'm an Epic 4g Touch owner so I'm well versed in it, but just starting to learn about the Verizon Nexus. Thanks a lot guys.
Unlocking the bootloader wipes it all; but a wipe data/factory reset from CWM doesn't touch your virtual sd card, i.e. photos, etc... remain. The OP is already unlocked, so he's "safe".
I will answer your specific question, "Where to put files so a wipe won't delete them?" If you want to be safe, on your computer or on anything external other than the phone. I only say this because the phone does not have an external sd card. Ill repeat what I said in another thread...we don't backup for the disasters we foresee but for the ones we don't.
Only the factory recovery wipes the /data/media ("/sdcard") partition. Any third-party community-built recovery (like ClockworkMod Recovery or TeamWin Recovery Project) will wipe everything except /data/media.
So, to answer your question, as long as the files are on your phone's pretend SD card (the default for user-created content and files you transfer to your phone), they won't be wiped when installing a custom ROM.

Awesome - thank you both for your responses. That's actually a pretty cool little feature. I wish my phone could have apps retained after doing a "data/factory reset" wipe, which is such a good idea when going between ROMS.
I am stating that correctly, right? Apps, app data/caches, pretty much everything but system apps will be retained after a 3rd party data wipe? I just want to be sure, especially since it's not my device I'd be messing with Thanks

No, I'm afraid not. Applications will be wiped, as they reside on /data/app. The only item not wiped is the /data/media partition. Plug your phone up to your computer - the files and folders that you see listed will remain after a full wipe. Everything else will be gone.
Though, to be technical, a "factory reset" wipe primarily wipes /data (except for /data/media) and /cache. You'll generally have to manually wipe (through recovery) /system.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking...thought it was a little too good to be true. No biggie...that's what Titanium backup is for
So, just to play devils advocate...if I were to copy, for instance, the go sms backup file that's created when you backup files to the /data/media partition, theoretically that would be retained, correct? That's about the only thing that would be lost doing a 3rd party wipe that couldn't be TB restored...and when I talk about the go sms back up I would like to throw things like her circle launcher setup backup files, etc. in that ring...what do you think about that?

A lot of apps (I can't speak specifically for those, unfortunately) actually keep their user-created backup files in a directory on /data/media, so those would be safe. I know that Nova Launcher, Titanium Backup, Tasker, and some others do that.
The SD card does not get wiped between rom flashes using Cwm. Only the first boot loader unlock does everything get wiped.
So all my files and pics on my SD card stay in tact when I wipe in Cwm or flash a new rom.
Hi all,
I have a similar question.. I'm wanting to know where I can safely put the ROM zip because I want to wipe the sdcard0 partitiion
If I put it in /data/media I should be able to select it from there in CWM recovery right?

So I rebooted into recovery, formatted the sdcard.
Now when I try to push the file in adb, it's not showing up.
Tried pushing to both /storage/sdcard0 and /sdcard but they're not showing up when i ls into them from shell. In fact I can't acces /sdcard at all, but /storage/sdcard0 is empty.
I can't mount /sdcard in CWM either.
Help!

Try /data/media, as that is where the "sdcard" data actually resides. The other locations are just links that point here
You may need to use the recovery option to mount /data.

I ended up flashing back to stock and then flashed a new ROM and it seems to be working OK.
In the future, though, what should I have done different to avoid not being able to access /sdcard?

I'd just try accessing it via /data/media instead. The other links may not be created before the system actually boots.
My phone is currently not working at all so I would really appreciate some help. I was running MMuzzy's 4.2 JB ROM (Around the 12/16/12 Version) and I decided to update to the 1/11/13 ROM version. So I installed the files onto my phone and rebooted into recovery, wiped cache and dalvik cache, and installed the files form SD Card. After this, I chose reboot system and it just went straight back into recovery. New ROM wouldn't load. I was an idiot and did not do a backup of my previous rom because I thought it would be a flawless process since I was updating to a new version of the same ROM. So I have no backup to access right now. An odd thing I noticed is when I "chose ZIP from SD card" multiple options such as 0/ and obb came up instead of just showing the files in my SD card. Right now to access my files I have to choose ZIP from sd card, choose 0/, 0/ again, 0/again, and then I can see my ROM and gapps zip files. Since the New rom didnt work I did a factory reset and wiped everything and tried to install the Zips again. Still nothing. Also, the phone can't find any of my old backups. I suspect this has something to do with the odd formatting issue and 0/ and obb folders showing up but I have no idea. What should I do? At this point I don't care If I lose everything on my sd card I just want my phone working.
Thanks
in mounts and storage mount /data then
adb push ROM.zip /data/media
then unmount and it should be there on the root of your "sdcard"
Edit- but if you have 3 "0" folders then you will have to change it from data/media to data/media/0/0/0

If you're a n00b then flashing a new ROM without knowing how to fix an issue wasn't the best idea was it?
The best solution I can give is to flash back to 100% stock and then start again once you know what you're doing. Use this guide:

I did a search to try and find an answer but couldn't find anything, so apologies if it has already been asked/answered..
Alrighty, so I got my shiny new Nexus 7 Flo for Christmas, and rooted it straight away. Everything seems to be fine, but just realised i hadn't done a nandroid backup yet. Once the backup was finished, I rebooted so I could move the backup to my laptop to free up ~4gb from my Nexus, but the backup location is different from the normal /sdcard/ClockworkMod/Backup, and I finally found it (using a root file manager) in data/media/clockworkmod/backup.
SO, my question is this..
Since it is apparent that Nexus 7 doesn't support USB Mass Storage Mode, I cannot access said nandroid backup without using a root file manager to move it to my MTP-accessible /sdcard folder, then moving to my laptop. That being the case, if something funky were to happen to my tablet and require me to restore the nandroid backup, how would I be able to put the nandroid backup back onto my tablet, since it would require the root file manager to move (which I obviously wouldn't be able to use if I'm in a bootloop for example).
As i was typing this I thought that mounting USB storage in recovery might do the trick, but nothing appears in My Computer when I select mount USB storage in CWM..
Any ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks

if you have adb set up correctly and the path variable set - just navigate to where you want to save your Nandroid and type:
Code:
adb pull /data/media/clockworkmod/backup/
To put it back on your device you can use adb push for single files or the entire directory contents to wherever you want to put the files on your device.
Code:
adb push /path/to/saved/file_or_directory /target_dir_on_device
Then restore using cwm or twrp as needed.
Alternatively you could also use fastboot to flash your recovery images.
hope this helps,
Cheers!
Ahh i didn't even think of using adb pull to work around this, thanks heaps!

USB is not native on the Nexus 7 Flo so USB only works with an stick mount type app. I don't know if any will do this without root but you can't mount USB in recovery regardless. As to how to get a nandroid to your tablet, adb is your friend. 4GB is a an unusually huge nandroid. I always recommend keeping a nandroid or at least a ROM zip on you internal memory to flash. It save some hassles.

I'm not referring to mounting a USB stick to the tablet, I already use stickmount for that. I'm talking about mounting the Nexus to the computer so files can be moved to it while in recovery.
As for the nandroid file size, it's 4gb because of my apps/app data backed up within it.. If there is a way to nandroid backup without also backing up /data folder I'd love to know how (but I'll also feel like an idiot because I've been trying to work out how to do that for a while lol..)

1. Backup type: use "CWM Full" or "CWM Incremental"? What's the difference?
2. Being that the CWM Recovery nandroid location is /data/media/clockworkmod/backup, should I set OBackup to save to this location or leave it at the default /mnt/sdcard, and if I do, will it still be recognised within recovery to restore said backup?

The example here is for a backup without the data partition.
You can save the nandoid to the /sdcard/ directory - because I use TWRP mine go to /sdcard/TWRP/BACKUPS/<device serial number>
For CWM I am not sure of the option but it would be custom if you only want certain partitions.
regardless as long as you know where it is you can restore it. If you use nandroid manager it will scan and find your backup paths for you and restore them, or again you can just point your recovery to them.

oh and I never bother trying to save uncompressed backups to drop box they take forever. I usually just adb pull them to my desktop then stash an archival copy on dvd . zipping and uploading to drive/box/dropbox are also good options but as you said they take a very long time. It is just easier for me to maintain multiple copies on different computers and media in the house...

I think that cwm looks for the backup in a oddball location. Cant remember exactly where off the top of my head. Its late and I'm tired. Nandroid manager should be able to find it though.

There's no option within CWM to select which partitions to backup, or to select backup/restore locations, but it has the advanced options to restore selected partitions, which doesn't really help for now..
I'm more concerned if I get into a bootloop, and my recovery can't find my nandroid backups to restore to..
Yeah I understand your concern. If I am not mistaken the reason you cant see the backup is because it is in protected storage. I think cwm does this by design now... Have you tired booting into recovery and looking for it in cwm?Once you figure out where cwm saves it you can tell online nandroid to save it there, or you could just boot to recovery and do your nandroid directly from cwm. Personally I prefer to do it "online" so I don't have to reboot...
I really cant be of much more assistance directly becuase I don't have CWM on the device right now, but It looks to me like you pretty much have it licked. I'll check back after I get some sleep and If you are still having issues I'll flash cwm and see if I can be of any further assistance.

Okay so I just did a custom nandroid within the app you linked me to, and set it to save in /data/media and booted into recovery, and CWM now sees the backup :good:
That's pretty much my problems solved now, seems i'll have to use adb as you mentioned to pull the backup from my device to store on my laptop/portable HDD, and then push it back if needed, thanks very much for your help!
You're very welcome. I'm glad you have it all sorted out
