Hardware Home Button Slop - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

I got my S4 yesterday in the mail and one of the first things I noticed was that the home button has a little bit of play. On my S3, the home button is rock solid, so I'm wondering if I got a lemon or if this is normal. Basically, the home button is not a 'single action' press and one side will go down before the other side, resulting in a somewhat flimsy feeling.
Anyone else experiencing this?

Defect button, mine is in perfect condition.

Do you find TP2 buttons are hard to press?

I use TP2 for months now and find the buttons are somewhat hard to press especially the End Call/Home button, it has bad tactile among 4 buttons.
Maybe mine has button issue...
How is yours?
glad to find that am not the only one with this problem!
first i thought it got stuck cuz i pressed on it too hard, but now i guess its a failure in the design..
still searching for the perfect lock app so i don't have to feel this weird tactile every time i lock my device -.-

Odd, I don't feel anything weird with my home/end button. Perhaps it's an isolated problem specific to particular batches. Anyway, check out the following link for a lock app which is pretty good.

I agree. While the buttons do work, they lack the tactile feedback I would expect from a physical button. They don't have enough of a "click".
I feel the same sensation of hardeness, but it doesn't really bother me.
Just a question of feeling, nothing more
Quite a relief to know that mine is not faulty (just yet).
Thanks for sharing
I have the same issue + as for me this keyboard not as comfy as it was at my herald, it's seems a little BIG with LONG distance between buttons. but anyway it's very good keyabord

buttons 'creaking'

does anyone else's buttons creak a little when being pressed? i have no trouble clicking the button itself, but when i run my finger over the power button and volume button, i can definitely feel and hear a slight creak which annoys me.. (home button is completely fine)
do you think it's worth an exchange?
I wouldn't necessarily say it would be worthy of an exchange, but that's my opinion. My buttons do not creak, but I do not remember if they ever did before either. Exchange it if you feel it'll bother you a lot, if not, the creak will eventually go away from wear.
Remember it is a Samsung not an HTC
I have the same problem. Volume buttons are a bit creaky.

The only button that's creaky on my unit is the home button. Nothing particularly annoying though. At first when I noticed it I thought the rest of the build would be shoddy, but it definitely isn't.

My home button creaks. It sounds like it is coming from the flimsy battery cover. With a tpu case it does not do it on mine.

Take it from car mechanic
there's nothing a little spray of WD40 cannot solve! :good:

Power Button - Squishy

Has anyone else noticed that the power button on the Galaxy Note 2 is a little squishy? Mine will press in at the top and the bottom of the button before the button actually clicks. It is almost as if the actual "button" is in the center of the power button. So if you press the power from the top most part or bottom most part it presses in a little further before it clicks.
Thankfully it functions just fine.

I am thinking that, it presses in fine but if I rub my finger along the chrome edge I can feel the button rock up and down near each end. I an not nearly as OCD as some on this forum but I am just leery about issues down the road since this is the power button.
Does anyone else have the same "issue" that I do?
Yup, I have the same issue exactly as you are describing. Kind of seesaws in the middle.
Ok then ill just chalk it up as "acceptable" and get some insurance on it.
Thanks chunology and draconas for the reply

I noticed the same thing yesterday. Funyy how I read this post. I just hope the button doesn't fall out like the volume rocker on my old HTC Sensation.
Shoul I change mine Note 2 because of this?
Does anyone here change his note 2 because of this? Mine feels really bad, it works, but it's starting to get harder. I want to know if I need to ask to my carrier for a change.
Mine works fine. Feels solid and doesn't rock...weird

Screen sensitivity on right side of screen.

Recently I've been noticing that my N4 is having touch sensitivity issues on the right side of the screen. This is kind of a big deal because I'm a righty and use my right thumb most of the time to navigate pages when holding my phone. I'll further explain what's going on so maybe someone can chime in.
Let's say I open up Instagram and visit a page. When I get to the page I can see all their pictures and scroll to look at them. If I scroll on the left side of the screen with my finger I have no issues at all. As soon as I scroll with my thumb on the right most of the times it'll select the picture and open it when in fact I only wanted to scroll.
I've had this phone for a few months now and this issue just popped up recently. I didn't have a screen protector on the screen (glass or plastic) and in fact just bought a glass one yesterday to see if maybe that will make a difference. It didn't.
Another example where this issue is visible is if I'm typing and using SWYPE. As soon as I trace to the right side of the screen the SWYPE line will break and royally screw up what I was typing. I believe this is a hardware fault so I will take it to AT&T to have them look at it for me.
I remember running into this shortly after disabling a handful of things via that method to get rid of bloat that's floating around on here. I'll see about getting a replacement sent out. I want to hear from anyone who's done that debloating method that's posted on this forum. I haven't tried a master reset yet as I'd have to back up a lot of stuff beforehand. I don't think that will help but I'll try it anyway and report back.
Tried the master rest and the issue persists. I'm waiting for AT&T to open to see if I can get this replaced today.
That sounds like your best bet at the moment. When you reset did you reset from within android or did you reboot into recovery and reset? might be worth it, just for sh!ts and giggles to try from recovery.

I have been experiencing the same issue and haven't thought much of it until I read this post. A lot of time when I try to end my phone calls the end button doesn't respond to my touches. Also it take a few time with the apps on the right side of my app drawer as well. Doesn't happen every time but enough for me to take notice. I did not debloat, but do have some apps frozen through the app manager.
I'm at a Device Warranty center right now. Next in line and going to get a replacement N4. Do the SWYPE test. Swipe on the right side and see if the blue line breaks and it messes up your words royally.
Had a replacement ordered so I should have it mid-week.

Also had the same issues ending calls. You know how nosy people get. They wait until you hang up and if you don't they'll literally hang on the phone.

No, I'm using a slim case by case mate. It's just one of the cases that fits like a glove.
I received an email saying I should have the replacement by Tuesday. It's so frustrating to type on the phone. It'll be over soon though.

Yeah, had one of these cases. Left a thumb size area on screen that would react to touch, but not to s-pen. Replaced it with new Note with no issue, put back in case and issue is back only then I figured it out. Waiting for Samsung OEM case.

Definitely not my case causing the issue. I will make a video.
I've started having a similar issue with my Verizon Note 4. Really annoying to simply try to scroll and have links clicked and opened. "Increase touch sensitivity" has always been turned off. It's definitely not case related, and I'm not using a screen protector.
finally!

Does anyone else have a very loud home button?

Depending on where I press mine, it will either sound llike a very well made solid well built phone vs a cheap plastic throw away... Experimenting now it seems like if I hit it close to the top of the button vs the middle/center or bottom it will make the cheap plastic sound

Samsung should have used a glass home button like on the iPhone and the OnePlus3.

My home button is slightly loud, sounds like any solid button though. From the bottom the sound is minimized. Could be the way it was constructed because of the water and dust resistance. I havent had a physical home button in a while though. Had the note 2 and then upgrade to note 4 but swapped that for the nexus 6 when I couldnt root and my phone would get very hot doing basic things.
I stopped buying Samsung because the home buttons would always fail and register double presses (launching into S Voice) after about a year of use. The OP post along with the scratches reported elsewhere makes me consider just getting a cheap One Plus Three...
I would love if Note 7 had:
1. ceramic or glass home button
2. Metal S Pen, not plastic

The home button and Spen on my very well used Note 2 and 4 are still perfect.
Had my note 3 for 2yrs and same.
As is my S3 minus the Spen
Pen is in there good. Takes a bit of force to pull out and the home button has a distinct click to it.
Sometimes I hear an audible click when using the home button. I thought it was just me, or tight mechanics... I kinda like it. I like mechanical keyboards, too...

Mine has sometimes loud sound and also sometimes when i press and swipe from left to right the home button sticks and stays pressed until i click it again, otherwise it is working fine.
i am thinking of taking it to the store and see what they say.
Mine does that also. If I press it offcenter to the left, it sometimes either sticks down, or emits a loud click when popping back up.
It doesn't bother me though. It happens very rarely, and the rest of the phone is perfect, so I don't want to have it replaced with one that isn't.
My buddies was sticking on almost every other click.. He returned it.. His was a black variant from china.
His new one is silver and flawless, same with mine.

Home Button Issue
I got my replacement note 7 yesterday. The home button does not click properly. I don't think I'm being anal about it but I took it back to T-mobile and everyone working there looked at me like I was crazy. The home button clicks perfectly on the right side but is stiff on the left side. Not a big deal because the button still functions, it just feels weird. If my thumb is more to the left of the home button, I dont get the feeling of the button being pressed. All I'm saying is that if I'm paying 950 with my hard earned money I expect it to function 100% out of the box. Anyone else have a similar issue. The T-mobile people told me to go to the Samsung store, aka they don't wanna deal with me. I'm annoyed with my experience and considering just dropping Samsung and T-mobile all together.
...
I havent had mine get stuck fortunately. There is definitely an issue with the Home buttons, I agree. No one at T-mobile wants to admit it. I don't like being considered crazy, and I'm pissed.
lorenzobjuarez said:
I literally just bought a black one from a T-Mobile store about an hour ago. On mine pressing on the left side of the home button actually feels proper, it is the RIGHT side that feels cheap and makes a loud noise when clicking it.
Even more bothersome it's the fact that if you press and hold on the home button and slide from LEFT to RIGHT the button will actually get stuck underneath the right side until I wiggle it & then it will "pop" out making a loud click!!!
Can you confirm if yours does this & gets stuck too?
There is definitely something wrong with these home buttons, I'm with you it's totally pissing me off that I paid almost $1,000 for a phone with a CHEAP plastic home button that isn't even done right. At least when Apple uses a home button they make sure it's a glass and actually works well!

I just feel that I should stand my ground, bc I'm def not gonna say that there is no issue with the home button bc I know there is. 3 of my coworkers have confirmed that they notice the issue too. Also there is no way in hell I'm paying a $50 restocking fee when the unit is received is defective. Not to sound rude but you must be rich if you are willing to pay a restocking fee twice. I'm a New Yorker so I will fight tooth and nail to win my case! If enough phones have a similar issue Samsung may have to do another recall, lol.
lorenzobjuarez said:
I feel your pain man I'm equally as aggravated right now...
Here's what you should do though, if you are still within your 14-day return window just take it back to the store (with yout receipt & box) and tell them flat out that you want to return it because you just "didn't like it".
I previously returned my last Note 7, 4 days before the recalland I honestly didn't like it, so that's what I told them and they gave me a full refund with no problems. I think the issue here is that whenever you tell them there is something wrong with the phone, they always want you to go through warranty because technically "there is something wrong with it".
Since you already paid them a visit once, if anybody recognizes you & brings up your last complaint just tell them that you were comparing it to your last phone and now that you've gone used to the home button for these last couple of days there's nothing wrong with it... It was just you!
It's ridiculous that you will have to admit that you are crazy and that there is nothing wrong with the phone just so you can return it, but in the end you will win. Again, don't bring up any complaints just tell them that you did not like it and the phone works perfectly fine, they will charge you a $50 restocking fee that I will GLADLY pay again to return this trash Phone!!! They will proceed to give you a refund and just wait a couple of more days or weeks possibly even months until they get more inventory & you can buy it again and HOPE that this one is not defective.
I'm just going to play with mine for today and that is exactly what I'm going to go do tomorrow morning, I won't even bring up the home button issue.

Picked up my replacement today and I get a faint click when I press slightly on the left side of my home button like it's sticking. I could tell it felt different from my previous note 7 as soon as I pressed it. Has very slight loose movement when you push the left side up and down. It's pretty annoying.
Thank you, I mean you gave me a good alternative options...truth be told your plan is actually starting to sound pretty good just about now, lol. I realized what a hassale it would be to fight for a replacement.
lorenzobjuarez said:
No I'm not "rich" lol!
I'll just rather pay up the money needed to move on with my life and avoid the stress and headaches of having to relay this to the incompetent people at the store. Let's face it, most of us here at XDA would have their jobs by tomorrow!
I get where you're coming from in regards to standing your ground, the problem is they're not going to want to play ball with you... as you have already seen. At this point I'm not about to stay with a messed up home button phone annoying me each and every time that I press it, I don't even want to look at the darn thing!
This is an issue that not a lot of people are going to notice and it's not nearly as drastic as an exploding battery so I highly doubt this will force Samsung to do another recall; especially considering how much money they've lost already.
Either way, it was just a suggestion and I was just trying to help...
