I am totally new to smartphones, rooting, android, etc.
I have a new EVO. I would like to root in order to access free tethering. Nothing more, nothing less. I like my phone exactly the way it is. I don't want to flash custom roms, manipulate apps, etc. etc.
Can anyone suggest a SIMPLE root method that would JUST accomplish free tethering?
Thanks!
Lots of tutorials there.
First I enabled installing apps from APK in Settings > Applications. Then I just went to http://www.unrevoked.com/m and downloaded the APK and installed it, ran it, clicked the button. Then I got this APK: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/detail?name=wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre2.apk&can=2&q=

ViViDBoarder, Thank you! It workd like a charm. Rooted my phone in less than 5 minutes and obtained wifi tether! Can't thank you enough!
No Stranger to Android. However it is usually on a rooted phone. Now here my scenario. We are looking at issuing Defy's to our inspectors, however we would like to remove the bloatware apps such as Blockbuster, etc. So my question is whether or not there is a way to remove the apps without rooting the phones. I truthfully don't even care if its a paid app we need to do. Thanks!
You can't remove the bloatware without rooting but you could always root the phone using z4root, remove the bloatware and set things up how you like, install the custom recovery, create a backup of the rom then flash it to each of the phones and unroot them.
Yeah.....I was afraid of that. I figured that was the easiest way, but trying to explain that to the director is not going to be fun. At that point I might as well convince him to let me put Froyo or Gingerbread on it. hehe
z4root has a "temporary root" button, and when you reboot root is lost. Unninstall z4root and nothing happened

Sorry threadstarter for hijacking ur thread, but can you temporary root and remove all those unwanted applications and unroot it ? Is it possible ?
Yes, two options with z4root:
Temporary root: Install program, hit temporary root, remove all the baaaad stuff, reboot, uninstall z4root.
Permanent root: Install program, hit permanent root, remove all the ****, hit un-root, uninstall z4root.
Someone can say me if I am wrong?
Ok so I have z4Root installed and have rooted. Now how do I go about uninstalling apps I don't want. I looked under "Manage Applications" but all I see there are appps that I've installed.
Edit: Nevermind. I figured it out.
Edit: Nope still confused. Cant seem to find the "uninstall" button.
To remove unwanted stuff, the easy way is using rootexplorer, renaming the extension app from apk to bak for example. System apps are in /system/app.
You can too use adb, but it requires more knowledge.

As another follow up question on this. Is it possible to lock the phone down so that they cannot install any other apps on the phone? I know we could prolly lock the market, but we want it open just in case. Sorry.... never really explored using Android in a corporate enviroment and trying to enforce all the rules that you have under Blackberry and WinMo. Thanks!
just wondering, i c there is tons of stuff on this but can someone tell me y i would want to root? besides the tether hack not to sure if there is any gain?
Thanks!
Think of root as administrator level access. Just as on your computer, some things cannot be done without this granted. Backup at an application level is another example.
Or the more you wanna get into it, you can intall custom roms which are tweaked and made up to perform faster. Also can install kernel and overclock your phone. A lot of stuff you can do with your phone rooted. You should head to the developers forum on xda for the Epic and read some of that stuff

You can freeze services and or apps that you want to keep but don't want auto starting on their own (using your battery and memory). You can wipe deeper caches when having other problems, and you can force the phone to roam when you want it to. You can also remove bloatware apps that you normally can't remove without root access. When you find an app you want to use that says "requires root access" you must root to use the app.
A big thing for me is to remove all the sprint bloatware. This keeps the processes from running completely and in theory, saves battery life.
From there, you can do full backups and what not.
Hey all, I have the GOOD app for my corp email, and it now checks for root, and boots me everytime I try to install it. I had off and on problems with my Nexus S with that, but I figured it was on their end as it would work fine for a few weeks.
Anyway, I cannot get it to open with my rooted SGS3. I am stock ROM, just rooted. Do I have to live in a stock world now if I want work email on my phone (which I kinda have to have). No way to hide that from that app?
If I do, what is the best way to unroot without losing all my apps and data? I dont think I can use ti backup on a non-rooted phone.

Not sure if it will work but you can try using supersu. You can set GOOD to deny root and disable notifications. Might work?

Didn't think of that. Unfortunately no go.
Any other thoughts on either returning to stock with my apps/settings, it tricking the app?

This must be a setting your company can adjust, because we use GOOD at my work, and it's working for me, on top of a totally custom, rooted ROM. My Good for enterprise version is 1.9.1.220

How about voodoo OTA rootkeeper, you can temp. unroot run app and simply reroot
Try this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1815070. Sounds perfect.

Has anyone had any luck using tasker to rename/remove superuser (or supersu) on the launch of a specific app like this one that checks for root, and then auto restore root after tasker sees the app close?
(Yes I know tasker requires root to work but I'm asking if there has been some type of hack or mod to allow tasker to carry out root functions when it temporarily loses super(su/user))

Any luck ? My company is not going to change the root policy so I eather have to avoid it or ...
what about the stock email app?
If you would be willing to use the stock app you could always try this http://db.tt/b6Svh2HB . Figured its worth mentioning
Hey!
I was faced with the very same issues using Good for Enterprise. The workaround I've used is:
- flash Siyah Kernel (S3 1.7 RC1, i think)
- setup dual boot with a couple ROMs (PA and Omega in my case).
- remove root on one of the ROMs and reboot
- boot into the unrooted ROM and install Good from scratch (and not via Titanium)
- thank the developers who came up with these fantastic ROMs and kernels on a daily basis
Good luck! Pun intended .
The way we do it is through a script that disabled root - it essentially renames su items the app looks for.
We also had to change permissions to disabled on GOOD for RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED and READ_CALL_LOG
He then made two apk's in tasker that
A) Runs the disable root script and opens GOOD
B) Run the enable root script and opens SU as assurance that we have SU back
Now, there may be an easier way to run GOOD, but this works for us.
I'm running CM10. I believe he's running another JB rom.

My dependency on GOOD is the only think keeping me from moving from stock to CM10. Could you share the script and apks that let you run GFE?
gnja can you share the script?
Here you go. GFE and root happy again.

somebody doing hardwork to make this happen. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2040163
personally its too cumbersome for me, so i opted for a fully stock 2nd device which i already have.
it can also be an excuse for buying a new phone, and making your existing phone revert back to full stock just for the purpose.
or maybe buy a cheap used but decent & certified phone like Xperia Arc for the purpose.
Hi every one.
I am new here. So I'm writing with all the details I can think of.
I'm using HTC desire x jelly bean in India. I've temp rooted the device. Now I run with a twrp touch screen edition revovery. I run the stock version (with odex) Rom. The only changes I made is removal of some bloatware.
The main reason I've rooted my device is to save space by pushing non movable and frequently used apps to system/app .
Since I only have temp root, The way I'm making user apps as system app is as follows
1. creating a backup Apk file either by manually copying from data/app or by clean master.
2 uninstall the app.
3 after entering the twrp recovery, I move the Apk files to system/app ( I don't create any odex files for the moved app)
4 reboot after wiping dalvik & cache.
Its a working method. But my problem is that several apps both that I frequently uses and high size are cannot converted into system apps. After making such apps as system apps, when I try to open them it force closes, crashes, or misbehaving (eg. Shows No internet connectivity even if I'm connected to web). I tried odexing the user Apk. But it not seems to be the problem. I like to know
1 why is this happening.
2 can I identify such apps before moving it to the /system/app
3 how/can I solve this isue ( I don't own a pc).
4 I am writing a list of apps that I've already tried and failed to convert as system apps. If there is no general methods can you suggest methods for the following apps
Quick pick
Mx player
BS player
Chrome
Adobe reader
Google plus
Opera mini
Opera
Google Maps
RAR
Mozilla Firefox
Freecharge
Advance download manager
Google search
Dolphin browser Jetpack
Chess free
Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the reply. I forgot to mention on my post that I run chmod_66 from recovery. I think that fixes the permission issues. Also I tried "fix permissions", but really don't know what it does.
Like I mentioned before I am a temp root user. Can't mess around with my ROM when the OS is up. The only option I have is the TWRP recovery.

I have temp root. The main thing I am sticking with it because I saw, when I set s-off the handset vibrates 7 times at start up, and there is no proper guide to set the s back on. I looked to permanent root my device because I want to merge the in built memory and app storage partition. But I'm not an expert in this area and need to play it safe. I didn't satisfied with any guide for turning security on again after s-off.
I can get my hands on to my friends pc on some holidays too. But I would prefer not using a pc if I can do the same with my handset.
My handset is
HTC desire x running jelly bean
With temp root and TWRP touch version for jb
Also run odexed stock Rom
Any one has s-off version of the same device as mine and can run any of the apps I listed in the question?

My device is an HTC handset
It has a unique feature that even after you unlock your bootloader and flash super user (which I did) it will be in still s-on mode. S stands for security I think. With s-on you can have root access, but can't alter your Rom while you are running your OS. That's why I'm using my custom recovery all the time. Doing an s-off comes with some bug that the device will vibrate 7 or 10 Times while I an booting. And removing the super user app won't do any good. You need to turn s back on for its to stop. And I don't have a clear picture about the "turning s back on" procedure.
And I think I can do almost everything with my temporary root. And moving Apk files to /system/app and giving it read write permission is very much possible with my recovery.
If you alter the Rom while running your OS with temp root, the device will restart and the changes that you made to the Rom will be disappear. So the instructions you are giving me is not going to work for me.

OK try system app installer which directly install the app to you system app and don't try to convert user app to system app because sometimes(some apps) its crashing so,I recommended you install app directly to your system

having full permanent root and moving your files while in your phones OS with superuser root permissions is the ***EASIEST*** way, what im telling you works on just about every android device, if not ALL of them, you are going around your ass for no reason, you haven't had any luck with the way you are trying, the way I told you WORKS without a doubt so what is your problem? its simple, full root, move what you want to move, unroot, then go back to your temp root setup and you'll be where you want to be,I'm done, you've been given advice on how to do it but you are a closed minded person that is looking for the answer that you WANT to hear instead of the answer that exists.

I can convert user apps to system apps without any help alright. You are just telling me to do what I've been doing. Its not an answer to my question. And incase you don't know what s-off and s-on is, you probably shouldn't understand what I am really asking. I don't want any help with converting user apps as system apps.
I assume that you have permanent root device. Please try to make the apps I have mentioned as system apps and write back if its working for you. Try mx player and terminal emulator first. And write back with your experience

Try to use Titanium Backup or Link2SD apks. This is the way I convert my user apps in system apps. In AppMgr.apk you can see what apps is not good to convert. Good luck!

I'm trying to tell you that your difficulty is coming from using temp root instead of full root, if you fully rooted your device then there would be no more s off or s on because that is a function of temp root, full root does NOT have that restriction, fully root your device and you will be able to do it, I realize you have the s-off and s-on and that the problem you are having is that you can't remember how to turn it of or on, if you were to become a full root user instead of a temp root user and got used to it then you'd see that it performs MUCH easier and isn't limited and you stop being a temp root user because if you can run then why wrap a rope around your ankles? Android is much easier and multi functional when it is a rooted device and is not limited in any way.
