Why is it easier to switch LTE on from AOSP based ROMs? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

In AOSP ROMs there is a toggle button that will turn LTE on with no reboot or anything... on TW based ROMs you have to restart the phone; why is this?

What are you talking about? Restart the phone? TW handles the exchange between 3g to LTE much better. And if you want to Toggle anything it would be the data or airplane toggle. I've never heard of anyone having to reboot a phone to get lte on, even more so on a TW rom.

Yeah dude, I've never had to restart the phone....just go into settings and switch it from CDMA to CDMA/LTE and you're done.

Every TW ROM I've been on has asked me to reboot when toggling between LTE and CDMA when using that method. AOSP ROMs have not asked for a reboot. Might be ROM specific too, I at least know stock unrooted always asked.

Ah I see now, you guys are saying you have to reboot to switch from CDMA to CDMA/LTE on a TW rom, but not AOSP. But what edfunkycold and CNexus were saying is that at a software level, TW roms can switch between LTE and 3G much more seamlessly than AOSP. On an AOSP rom you seem to lose data connectivity for a second while the phone switches over from 4G to 3G or vice versa.
I don't know why TW asks you to reboot and AOSP doesn't though

Yeah, not sure how rebooting is more seamless. I'd rather lose data for a few seconds than have to wait for a reboot. But to each their own.

You're misunderstanding. On a TW rom, if you want to enable 4G, you have to reboot. On AOSP, you don't.
But if 4G is enabled on both a TW rom (so after the reboot) and an AOSP rom and you put two phones with each type of ROM next to each other, and watch the phones try and switch from 3G to 4G, the TW rom will switch much quicker and without loss of data connection, the AOSP rom will stutter for a second as it disconnects from 3G and connects to 4G

No problem

Wowzers!! Sorry guys for not being clear! I was talking about how on AOSP there is toggle button to turn it on, but to turn it on on TW ROMs you hafta reboot. Not talking about going from a 3G area to a 4G area, to a 3G area, etc.

3g and 1x icons

Ok I don't know if any has this problem but when I'm in a stock Rom I have both 3g and 1x Icons but when I flash a custom Rom I only get the 1x icon why is that it is mind boggling pleas help
I've noticed this occasionally as well, I would think that the stock ROM isn't reporting your signal strength accurately, or something like that.
You do have mobile data on, correct?
From what I read, cannot remember where, this is an issue with cyanogen. You are on 3G when data is enabled but the status icon will remain 1G. Or I have no idea what I am talking about. My phone is reporting the same btw. When I go online I use 4G or Wifi anyway. 7.0.2.1 stock PRL 01115 Baseband 2.15.00.11.19

That does make sense, I had the same issue when I was on Cyanogen.
OP, as long as you don't notice a different in speed and connectivity, then it isn't really a problem, I'm assuming.

Then again better wait till an expert confirms it. I would like to know so I can answer it correctly later on. You could test your speeds with data on in areas you know you do/don't get 3g service and post the results.
yes data is on but if i flash a regular stock rom like the factory but rooted the 3g icon comes up at the start with no problem but if i put some of the fancy roms or any of the 2.3.3 roms i only get the 1x only i dont know why is this i flash and flash and stilll the same crap .....
well i guess no help but im on the new virus kingdom port and mann it is fricken sweet " in my peter griffin voice"
The answer
Try *#*#4636#*#*
Choose Phone Information
Set preferred network type to CDMA only
Back out, your change is saved.
You should see 3g only now, just as you would with a sense rom.

ROM that can handle 4g to 3g handoff?

So I've tried using some ROMs but I've never been able to find one that can handle switching from 4g to 3g. Only the stock ROM can do this without losing connection, otherwise I have to turn on airplane mode every time i move from 4g to 3g. Is there a ROM out there that can do this?
Um just about all roms can do this without issue. CM10 can as well as all touchwiz based roms. What rom have you tried so far?

This sounds like a signal outage kinda thing, maybe, is there official lte in your area? If not, id avoid using it. Even then its sketchy. So maybe, when you cycle netween the two, it detects the other signal and tries to connect and drops it? If airplane mode your signal will get better coming out.

Odd data problem

Ok so I have an unlocked LG Nitro HD with custom ROM (CM10) and it has a very weird problem. I've tried two different AT&T MVNO SIM cards (AirVoice and Consumer Cellular) both have the same issue. My data signal keeps changing from H to H+ and occasionally to 3G like every few seconds regardless of where I am using the phone even outside. I don't understand what the problem is. What could be the issue?

Data does work but it seems to drain the battery with the networks constantly switching and on occasion I get a "No Connection" screen on certain apps, I guess because if I open an app while its swapping networks the app cant connect. It's strange.

I had another odd problem, just a few minutes ago was texting someone and all of a sudden phone froze while vibrating then restarted! Don't know if that's a bug in CM10 or what, maybe the network swapping is as well.

I tried installing CM9 and it appears to have fixed the problem, the phone doesn't try to connect to the H+ network anymore, only the H network and seems to stay on it so far. I did see it quickly go over to the 3G network but it doesn't appear to be causing any issues, it went right back to the H network. However, I really wish the CM10 ROM worked right, as CM9 is so old...

CM10 is snappy and oh so buttery smooth, I give you that. On another note, did you try any other CM10 variants? I'd give tdmcode's AOKP a spin. He says he might have fixed that problem you were talking about in his build.

I downloaded the CM10 ROM. It seems to behave slightly differently. It stays on H normally, but when I start to do something with data, it will go to H+ until the data loads, then go back to H. So far no disconnects, I'll keep you posted. Right now I have very limited data, I'm switching to T-Mobile as soon as UPS decides to deliver my SIM card (just found out they have a 1900MHz HSPA+ network in my area!) I'll be able to test it better then, but for now I'm trying to stick to wifi, especially since I wasted so much data tonight playing around with this stuff, lol.

Ditto... H and 3g are subsets of each other. Namely they can handle simultaneous voice and data 4G (h+) and lte can only handle data. So it switches back to H so you can receive and make calls plus it uses less battery. If you are on either 4G techs and receive a phone call while downloading it will automatically switch to H from h+ or lte, this is why. The only way you will never see this is on an AT&T rom where it only has 4G and lte icons.

H+ isn't a subset of 4G is it? I know that the CM's have separate icons for 3G/H, H+, 4G, and LTE.

That certainly is debatable but the US's largest carrier considers it to be, it behaves like 4g, H+ may not be as fast but it is 90%+ as fast in most markets small enough to not make a noticeable difference as far as people's perception and the technology behaves like LTE in a lot of respects, CM is international so it just conforms to International norms so that's why you get H+ AND 4G (LTE) designators.

Mobile Network/Data Upload Help!!!

When I am on the Network Mode LTE/CDMA/EVDO AND on 4g, my data works as intended, download and upload works. However, if I am still on LTE and only have 3g service...I get ZERO upload data. This is why MMS doesn't send and other things (Instagram, Snapchat).
To get these things to send, I got to set my Network Mode to just CDMA/EVDO Auto. The downside to this is that 4g will never get picked up when available.
If anybody knows how to fix this so that my data uploads when I'm 3g but on the LTE/CDMA/Evdo network mode that would be great!!!!
I am running the Carbon 5/10 nightly but I believe this is a common AOSP issue.
Thanks!!!

Once you can identify the baseband version try different modems besides your current one and see if it makes any difference for you. I'm sorry it took so long for anyone to respond to this..

Unfortunately, this did not work. I'm wondering if this is an APN issue, although I don't really know what I'm talking about.
As you can see from the screenies...3g upload speed is non-existant when on the LTE network mode.
Edit: 1st screenie is on LTE. The 2nd is on CDMA/Evdo Auto.
What are you talking about 3g on lte network mode. 3g is 3g. LTE is 4g two completely different things. If you have LTE in your area your device would connect and say 4g. If not it will connect to only 3g. If you are on a stock rom you might only be connected to 1x speed but your phone will display 3g. Only custom roms will break it down to actually show if you are on 1x connection.
If you are on a custom rom then that may be your problem if you do have lte in your area, even more so if you are on aosp type rom. They have issues handling the exchange between 4g and 3g. I pretty much bet that's what it is an rom issue handling the exchange.

What Rom are you on? Never mind, just read your on Carbon. This is a common issue with aosp roms. You should leave it always in cdma/lte/evdo never change from there. Set it to that and reboot. Use the toggle for 4g to turn 4g on or off.
But beltway to assure yourself that it is a rom issue is create a nandroid, then flash a TW rom and test the handling between 3g and 4g, and your data.

Correct, just do yourself a favor in order to eliminate a hardware issue. Make the nandroid of your current set up. Clean flash a TW rom anyone and check the handoffs if it works property it's a rom issue if you still have problems it could be the device itself. It takes less than 5 minutes to test you don't have to set everything up just flash log in with Google account and check.

[Q] I need help with my signal!

I have been in many many roms with my galaxy, from Touchwiz to cyanogenmode and liquidsmooth and many others, but one day, I recognize that my signal was really poor. I broke my screen and i replacement by my self i was really careful about didnt touching any other thing that was not part of the screen, but maybe, just maybe i scratch my antenna? There is anyway to check if my signal it's not good as before because of that? Also there are places where i have signal like my house and the speed is really fast, but there are also places where i have full signal and my speed is crap, and there are places were i lose my signal too frequently. I feel like my signal have been deplore slowly. Or it's just.. that sprint LTE is really bad?
first try updating your prl
next if youre on a MD4 TW rom, flash the md4 modem
also try updating your profile
if nothing works try one of the signal refresh apps from the play store
also it may be the rom
if none of the above helps its probably hardware related or it could just be that sprint is upgrading their towers and the one nearest to you is offline for the upgrade...
All AOSP based roms show's your true signal in the noti bar ( Data Bars )
TW JB has an extra signal so it looks like you have good signal but you don't.
Checking signal strength is in
About Phone > Status > Signal Strength.
Usually -75 to -99 is good to really good signal.
But if you think your actual signal is a little far-fetched. Download SpeedTestNET from
Google Play and look at your ups and downs.
My signal is around -80 dbm and my ups are 1 mb and my downs are 3-5 mbs ( It shucks :3 )
There are 3g / Wifi Speed Tweaks you can find around xda or google.
And if it has to come to it, if your on TW JB Rom, Turn off or Freeze your Sprint Connections Optimizer.
That auto connects to frequent used Networks, Wifi Terminals and towers that had the best connections for you before
and sometimes it'll connect to a good tower that's located really far ( I don't know why but I've experienced it... )
Use apps that recalibrate your Radio as well if it helps, A lot of people say it's not worth it, and sometimes it IS just a placebo
and it tricks ya but if it works it works.
Verizon PRL but only for talk.
Hey guys, I was wondering is there a way I can switch to Verizon's towers when I make a call, but only use Sprint's towers for data? didn't want to make a new thread about this in the Q&A since I can't actually post where the Sprint PRLs are yet, but I have horrible reception in my house. I roamed to Verizon's towers constantly when I switched PRLs a couple months ago and I got in trouble because I went over 300MB of data. Thank you all.

it's there is anyway to do that on Cyanogenmode or an AOSP rom?
sadly no... but your signal might be because your on an aosp rom... they arent as stable as touchwiz roms...
There's a few unofficial ported AOSP roms that have the sprint update feature, I'm not to sure which ones but i've seen them.
They only updates profile, im not to sure about PRL. It's best to update on a TW based Rom because it's easier, it takes
awhile switching between the two just to update though.
On a stock TW JB Rom, on home screen press your menu button.
Select Settings or System Settings.
Scroll all the way down and select System Updates.
Select Update PRL.
Wait for it to be done.
Select Update Profile.
Wait for that to be done.
Reboot your phone.
Make sure your data is connected, if it's slow be patient let it take time to update Profile and PRL.
Noted that as long as your on the Rom based on what firmware it is. ICS or JB. It doesn't matter which
modem you choose, just as long as its based on one or the other.
For example. Being on an MD4 Rom you'll still be able to have 3g / 4GLTE Data with an LJ7 Modem, or
LI3 rom with an LF9 modem. Remember changing your modem YMMV, or Your Mileage May Vary, almost everyone
who switches modems that have the best stability for them they either have better data speeds. Or They're not
being dropped as often or not at all when near a tower.
For me, around my area, using an MD4 Rom, I'm using the LJ7 modem, because all the other modems I have tried either
dropped my data ( Not connected to towers even though there's one near me. ) Or I'd have to reboot my phone just to get it back.
and when im on an AOSP Rom, I'm usually using LF9, Because i've tested my data speeds on it and that's the highest out of all i've used
+ I don't get my data cut off or dropped.
@ eisawi99
Most AOSP Roms have 3G and WiFi tweaks to help with stability. But the downer part of using AOSP Roms is it doesn't get along with
trying to connect to 4G LTE, I have 4G LTE in my area, when using a TW rom it'll instantly connect when ever it's got a strong signal.
While on an AOSP Rom, It rarely ever does even if im almost sitting next to it.
Sometimes it's also the APN's that are being configured via script tweaks. I usually just remove all my old APN's and use all of sprint's
APNs when ever i can't send or recieve a text or mms, but it'll also help with data connection stability too.
