[Q] Is your Galaxy Nexus overheating too?

The back of my phone is really heating up with only moderate use. Only a few minutes of youtube or angry birds will get the phone hot. The hot spot is only on the right side of the rear camera, or the backside of the front camera, however you wanna see it
Has anyone had the same problem?

My phone gets warm playing wind up knight. I haven't experienced hot yet.

when i've been using mine for a while and then make a call it is rather warm around the earpiece, dunno if thats normal or not.

Your thread title implies the phone is having a problem (ie. crashing, stuttering, FC) getting warm isn't really 'overheating' many mobile devices get pretty darn warm during intensive activities.
Are you experiencing a problem?

I just used my nexus as a wifi tether for my laptop for 3 hours, while charging off a usb cable and usually I get high temperatures usually when doing this with other phones, however nexus was cool to the touch after all this... haven't noticed much heat ever with this phone.... however I'm not a big gamer either.

Facing the front of the screen, the top right corner in an L shape seems to heat up quite a bit - from something medium intensive like web browsing.

No the title does not imply crashing of stuttering. If I did it would have the word 'crashing' or 'stuttering' in it.The title implies exactly what I'm getting. The phone overheat strongly in one spot , from very normal use. Not intensive tasks.
I haven't had FCs or anything like that so far. But it does get pretty hot. It is alarming if I may say.

ok, so it is heating up... not overheating. Mine gets pretty warm too but no adverse effects so far.

I have a feeling there is something in that corner that is dissipating the heat. I have a battery temp monitor and when it was really hot in that corner, my battery temp was 40C (30C seems to be normal idle temp) - but the center of the phone where the actual battery is doesn't feel hot.
So I'm assuming the heat is drawn to that corner.
Another thing I noticed (comparing to my previous phone) is that even though it got hot, it cools fast as well.

I get the same issue as well. But it wasnt particularly alarming since my Captivate, Infuse, and Skyrocket did the exact same thing. I have used the captivate and infuse for a long time now. The captivate was purchasd on launch day last year and has been passed down to my girlfriend, infuse is still being used daily by me since launch day as well, and the skyrocket (least used phone) was JUST sold for the funds to get my new gnexus. All of these phones have the same issue. I just figured Samsung phones get warm but thats it.

My phone is fine. I don't even get warm unless playing a 3d game. Charging is unusually cool. And I haven't even felt warmth from heavy hspa use.

to be honest...mine does seem to be getting rather excessively warm at the top right on both the front and back side...it's around where the RAM chip is on the PCB or could be around the CPU (which is more central but *shrug*). I cant think it's normal since i've never had a warm ear when i've been making a call with any phone i've had before!

My GN can be "very" warm at the back where the rear camera is. By playing 720p/1080p video files. Heavy HW decoding I believe.

So there is something. Can't believe no tech news site reported this before. Giving how quickly everyone rushed out to point a flaw the GN.
Has anyone contacted any Samsung rep on twitter or something? Who do we raise our concerns to?

I'm wondering if i should get my phone returned as DOA (since i need to do that by monday) with the getting quite hot and sleep of death and random reboots :|
i havent owned a high end phone like this though, and it's personally my first android phone (other people in the household have had one that i've mucked about with) so i dont actually know what to expect from it really...

I watched a netflix movie over mhl. The nexus got fairly warm. Still no overheating issues or reboots for me.

There is nothing wrong with it....... LOL "overheating" denotes your phone is crashing,stuttering,melting,burning or warning you that its hot....ect. So far nobody in this thread has this issue sooooo..... If the device is functioning properly then its not "overheating" as your thread title suggests. You should have put....does your phone get warm? Yes, just like computer processors they must get rid of the heat somehow this one dissipates it in the back just like most other phones.

except...the front is getting rather warm too. Doing simple things. Is that normal? Probably not. And excess heat + displays = bad. Also rather uncomfortable when you're making a call...if people use phones for calls anymore

Galaxy Nexus Overheating

So I just got the Galaxy Nexus (upgraded from the Nexus S) and just after the first day of use (no heavy workload, wifi or GPS) this thing became painfully hot. We're talking touch it to your skin and *ouch* hot. Strangely the massive heat output seems to be limited to just the top quarter of the device. Also note that it takes only about 10min until it reaches 'unusable' status.
Does anyone else have experience with this problem? Admittedly I was warned by the provider I got it from that they had had feedback from customers about it's excessive heat output and other people I know have also commented to the same affect. But I never thought it would be quite this bad. I could fry an egg on this thing. Considering my Nexus S never had this issue - this is disappointing. Are we talking hardware design fail? Or perhaps a bad batch in my country?
If this was an iPhone they'd be headlines going on about 'heat-gate' and Larry Page coming out saying that we're 'cooling it wrong' lol

Not that hot - maybe 20-25c

Perhaps monitor battery temp with an app, it won't give you a precise indication of your processor temp, but there should be a correlation. The phone does get warm around the camera area, but never painfully so (for me). Was your AOS usage abnormally high?

Anyways, its perfectly normal. the OMAP4 chipset runs really hot, I read somewhere that it operates normally between 85-105 degrees Fahrenheit.
Here it says that the OMAP4 platform has a temperature range of -40° to 85°C. I think thats overstating it, but its all there

I used by SGSII in northern Ethiopia (Dallol), air temp was 56C, it didn't like it

Well let me put it this way. It's hot enough for me to consider claiming on warranty. No phone should generate that much heat right next to your head/ear. That's unusable in real terms (at least with this particular one). And i've had my fair share of android phones in the past to compare...

The Tegra2 chipset runs VERY hot when overclocked as well, I've had hot experiences on both my Galaxy Tab 10.1 and my G2x, and I can also say that the OMAP4 runs hotter than that! Just offering opinion is all, it's perfectly normal for it to be running extra hot, and it happens fairly quickly.
I completely agree with you that the phone does get abnormally hot, but then again, from my experience, so does the RAZR with a sister chip in it.

Android 4.0.1, stock Nexus Galaxy, going on 2 weeks. It's in an otterbox defender case, after 1.5 hours of running video it's warm in my hands, but that's under constant workload that nearly drained the whole battery. In other words during normal operation I am not finding the serious problem you are describing. Empathy out to you.

What temps we're talking about? Mine stays at +36C +38C while browsing web/watching youtube and gets a bit (around +41C) hotter when playing games. And these temps are far from hot-to-touch.

Sometimes my GN becomes really hot too. It also happens when i'm watching hd video for a half an hour or more. Then it turns terribly hot.

mine goes to 48C and then it starts lagging like hell

Mine gets warm around the camera and earpiece. It's pretty normal, I'd say.

There are multiple threads on this, but I'll say what I've said before: it's a dual core device, it runs hot, it's not "overheating" unless your phone is crashing, shutting down, or otherwise obviously malfunctioning in some way other than getting hot.
What do you mean by "it reaches 'unusable' status" though? Are you just afraid of using it because it seems hot? Mine gets quite hot when I use it heavily...have kept it going for several hours in this state (while plugged in) with no other issues.

Mine gets hot in the same area, but it has never been that hot, just warm. My OG Droid was OCd to 1.3ghz and that literally reached 150+ degrees F quite a few times and is still fine to this day. The OMAP SoCs seem to run a bit hotter than others, but they can definitely handle the heat.

Basically out of the many smart phones i've had in the past. This is the first that I would say I would refuse to hold it up next to my ear due to the excessive heat. It's bad enough just holding it landscape to type on let alone sticking next to my head. It's really annoying considering how otherwise the interface and physical design of the device is better then anything else i've seen on the market.
I think i'm going to get one of those laser thermometers to find just what the temp on the surface of this thing actually is.

It's hot on the back of the phone like other uses have said, not the front where your ear would be (unless it is which is an entirely different problem). Plus, when your phone reaches those temps through extraneous use (videos, games), you normally wouldn't be putting it near your ear anyways. I don't see this as a huge issue. If you do something taxing, much like a computer, expect the phone to work a little bit harder and hotter.
Oh and I doubt it's hot enough to fry an egg. You would smell the plastic melt first.

I've had once when my GNex was really hot. It was when I try factory reset many times since there was a bug that factory reset does nothing in a custom rom. But I didn't know at that time. I tried reset, flash rom, reset, etc. My GNes ended up really hot.

The only time my galaxy nexus got really hot was when I was switching kernels every 2-3 days, and one kernel (I think it was one of Franco's earlier builds) made it run hot even when I wasn't using the phone that intensely. Changed the kernel, and it's never been hot since (I play games, listen to music, browse web, push notifications, etc.) I don't do much video/HD streaming though...

I have been getting that too. Around the earpiece gets warm when only slightly used. Also, I can hear a faint buzzing humming sound from there. Open the back cover..can hear it from the camera too. Is something wrong with my phone

[Q] Galaxy Note 2 overheating ??

Just thought I'd throw this out to see if anyone else has encountered this problem. Yesterday I was using some apps on my Note 2 (TomTom, voip, wifi and 4G ...) and I noticed the top of the phone getting rather hot, to the point that it was becoming uncomfortable to hold to my ear. This was much hotter than normal. I shut down all the running apps with app manager, but the phone stayed hot. CPU was running only about 10%. Finally I had to reboot...then it was back to normal. Its worrying that it could at some time be damaged by overheating. Has anybody had this problem and/or know what might be causing it? Thanks.

i got the same problem when playing a game in 10-15 mins it heated up pretty fast especially the front near samsung logo it was like over 100 degree

The only time I experience overheating is when I'm playing Need For Speed Most Wanted. It happens after about fifteen minutes of play. I haven't had it get uncomfortably hot but I always stop playing the game as it becomes abnormally hot. It's a shame to because I would like to play NFS more that fifteen minutes.

That is where the uber powerful quad core monster is grinding the gears of awesomeness at a mind blowing brain zapping 1.6 billion gigahertz lives at. And his girlfriend mali400 lives right next door and she is pumping out all the eye candy she can to satisfy the pleasure receptor s directly into your braiiiiiin.... Lol
In other words yes that's the main processor and graphics chip suckin up the battery. While it does that it's generating heat as a by product. It's completely normal. Nothing to worry about. Happy gaming. And it takes a while for it to cool back down to ambient.

I reported the overheating to Samsung Support. They said they have had no reports of the phone overheating...sounds unlikely after several months and millions of devices sold. Support suggests doing a data wipe from the recovery screen as this will "resolve most problems". Really? ???
Could be a firmware issue which Samsung will find and fix if they get sufficient number of reports. I suggest you report it to Samsung Support: http://www.samsung.com/us/support/...click on "live chat" for mobile phones.
Need for Speed is a game provided by (presumably) Samsung. If you can't play it for long, it seems like that represents some kind of inherent problem with the device. My concern is whether the overheating will be an ongoing, recurring problem. That would limit the usability of the device.
It's not clear if this is a problem that is worse on individual phones or if this is a problem common to all Note 2s. If its individual phones, then I'd probably like to return it for one that doesn't do this.
It seems the Exynos cpu is located near the speaker/logo. "System Tuner Pro" app reports system temperature under "CPU"

Mine is overheating while charging..I Woke up to a battery too hot message..the only thing different is I'm using a flip cover now,I took a screenshot of the temperature, and this was already cooled down a little..anybody know what this is? It's only been happening while charging though...

Samsung Note 2 Overheating Culprit
Two specific reasons : Quad core processor, Aluminium wiring.
Reports of deformity of the note 2 trickling in slowly. Try using processor hungry tasks and see it drop its jaw in 2 hrs.
they cant recall it, now its getting cheaper every day.

Try clearing the cache, supposedly things can occasionally get discombobulated. Last time my phone was about to set fire (gs3), cleared the cache & dalvik and it went back to normal.

I live in Chicago and summer days are already here. My Note 2 has started to let me down, since yesterday my phone is been up to 40c without any used.44 while charging. I dont think this is normal. Im on stock rom. Thank you in advanced.

Overheating persists
My 2 weeks old Galaxy Note 2 gets abnormally hot on the same area(rear camera part & the front phone calling speaker) while on charging, while playing games usually Modern Combat 4 or otherwise, & i am on stock rom as well. ...if anyone has a resolution for the problem then please share..

galaxy note 8.0 heating too much?

I just bought mine yesterday and this is my first tablet. I like it mainly for the size and the s-pen. During my 1 day of use I immediately feels that it's heating up a little too fast around the left side (maybe this is where the battery is). Do you guys have the same problems.

I think that is where the CPU is. I'd install a terminal shell and run the "ps" command to see what process(es) are using CPU.

update:
I've installed Diagnosis App and it's showing ~40C when playing games... Is this normal temp for a tab?

Is it normal for a device to heat up under heavy use? Clearly yes. Is it normal for a device to heat up while sitting there with nothing going on? Clearly no. Does your computer heat up when you use it? This is no different, except that there is no fan to help keep it cool. If you are not seeing any problems, reboots, crashes, or abnormal battery drain, why are you worried?

I think CPU problem.

Totally normal. About 104F, that's not even close to hot. Don't even need to start getting worried until you hit 120 or 130F.
This is starting to be the question that gets asked on here every day or 2. Already about 4 other threads asking this exact question.

I agree with you but, Do you think it's normal when I start to use it and after 10 minutes of web browsing, facebook and downloading apps it increases its Temperature level around 10°C? This is my first tablet and I'm worried about that. I compare the temperature with my Razr i and their behaviors are similar but, comparing with a Sony Tablet S it reaches 30°C doing the same processes. I hope you can help me, I just made a phone call to the shop where I bought it for a device replacement, but it wouldn't have any case if all Note 8 devices present the same problem.

This is now my second 8.0 and I really feel that this runs much cooler temperatures. Writing notes for several hours or casual playing I felt the first Note 8.0 also heat up a bit too much (still comfortable to hold) from the left side whereas this second runs nicely without heating up. Also what I noticed yesterday was the while charging the chargers was just warm when before with the first device it was actually getting hot.

The heat Issue?

I am thinking to buy the phone but I saw some posts there are some heat issues. So what is the problem besides the phone getting too hot? Is it shuting down when it gets too hot or get really laggy? Is there any other problem when heated except it gets really hot?

I haven't experienced any heat issues. I have yet to feel my g3 get warm Tbh.
Others (not sure which model) have reported issues with heat, to the point that it causes the device to throttle the brightness down. Again haven't experienced this on my at&t model.

Same here not felt it get warm even watching video.

When the phone gets hot several things happen.
1) The CPU is clocked down to help lower heat
2) Brightness is capped to help lower heat
3) If the phone continues to get too hot (usually when its already hot and you then start to play a really intense game, or benchmark the phone may shut itself down.

People complained a lot with the Korean model but I haven't seen anyone with a US model complain. Maybe the type of person that waits is less likely to be a phone gamer? They may have actually tweaked it so it doesn't activate as quickly or harshly. I do know some people disabled it on the Korean model. I haven't heard of anything bad happening but those few people may have felt dumb if it destroyed their phone and not posted that it did...

I have no heating problem with my lg g3 international D855 16gb model, even during quadrant test or playing games.

I disabled the thermal protection on my AT&T version and yes, I've felt it get quite hot while playing Final Fantasy 6. The heat radiated mainly through the metal power button but the entire top half of the device got pretty hot. Didn't bother me all that much tho, as I've had other devices get hot like that in the past.

I use exposed app CPU temp my g3 sits at about 30c and 45c which is normal temps and about 50ish whith thermal protection on disabled.

My girlfriend picked this up yesterday and this is happening to her G3. Not playing games though, just browsing the internet/reading an article. It makes no sense to me. How can you take control over that? She doesn't want to root the phone.
But yeah, just reading something or even looking at Facebook, the phone gets way too hot.

I picked up the Verizon version yesterday. It's gotten pretty warm around the power button a few times for me also. Typically not bad or what I would consider unusual with one or two exceptions.

My G3 (UK) go very very hot yesterday when I was on the train playing a graphically intensive game.
It shut itself down and then refused to turn on again. Ever.
I tried everything all night but no joy. I got a replacement handset today.
I'm sure it was because of the overheating that the phone malfunctioned. Without knowing exactly what has happened to it the timing is too coincidental for it to be random hardware failure. It was SUPER hot!

This is strange. Does the kernel not shut the phone down before it "fries" the SOC?,unless the throttling temps are too high? Wonder if this is linked to the display flickering problem myself and another poster had.

Funny you mention display flickering. I had that about 2 weeks ago. The display started flickering really badly, like nothing I've ever seen on any Android device, and I needed to pull the battery to reset. It didn't boot straight away either, it had to cool down a bit.

all phones get warm if you are on it for an extended period of time, surfing (using data), gaming etc etc screen on for long periods of time. those saying they can game and not have heat are lying to you. phone gets warm when screen is on for extended period of time and by phone I mean any phone

Yeah, i had a flickering display which didnt go away.I returned that phone. Another poster yesterday had the same issue.Im wondering if the GPU is frying itself? Although the GPU does throttle as well as the CPU. Running Antutu I would get 60+deg C maybe playing a game for an extended period of time for example is causing damage? Just a theory.
