Unroot to complete stock to receive OTA? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

Hey guys, sorry if this is a noob question but I never had to do this with a stock ROM on a device lol. I am currently on the stock ROM with root and know that my device can no longer get OTAs. I was wondering if I could be able to temporarily unroot and be able to receive an update without having to revert to my old backup? Thanks!
More info: I did not root with motochopper, I flashed a root zip.

If you update to the new ota your will lose the ability to root again. There is a kernel update that isn't Mentioned

Not true, you can just flash a older kernel that has the vulnerability. Until the android version is updated all the previous kernels will still work.

So you're saying that I can update via kies, flash the MDB kernel via odin, and regain root while being on the new build MDL?

There is a root method that is non tripping for the latest rom.

No need to worry about the flash counter. Triangle away will fix that. You just need root to use it.

Rooting after OTA Update?

I'm a real noob at this but read up as much as I can.
I rooted my T-mo GS3 using this method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1735561
with CWM.
Now I want to have the update. I'm assuming I can unroot my phone and then do the OTA update, but what methods are available to root the phone after the OTA update? My wife also has one of these phones, and has already done the OTA, but hasn't rooted her phone yet, so I really need this info for both phones. Could I use this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1771687 to root both our phones? Do I need to unroot and reset the flash counter on my rooted phone before doing that? Does that update included the latest radio update for these phones?
Thanks!
I'm in the same situation as you. And, this is the first time I root my phone.
I read a lot on the forum but it's kind of confuse me.

he mentioned OTA, so it should be the recent Tmo update.
To OP: I know 1 thing that the radio fix is not included in the OTA update

True... Yea you can root with the no trip method. It's stock rom with root so it won't trip count. After that download Rom Manager and add cwm thru there or goo app for twrp recovery

Thanks for your help.

I'm not sure. It might work or not maybe even thru Kies. Just depends cuz some were able to update last ota with no problems. I know that if you have custom recovery the OTA will fail unless you have stock recovery with root and use voodoo root keeper to try and keep root. The easiest way will be Odin back to stock and apply jb ota once released then root it back once someone confirms a method or wait till a dev releases a full rom.

Well, I only rooted the phone and did not do anything else on it yet. So, I guess I don't need to use ordin to go back stock? The, I should be able to do the OTA?

You mentioned a radio 'fix'. But its not a fix that I am aware of. Just an update. As long as you update via odin or kies with the official ota or firmware you will get the FULL update. This means other partitions will receive patches as well. If you update only by flashing a rooted rom using cwm or twrp you will NOT get the updates to the other partitions, including the radio. (You can flash the radio separately of course but would still not get the updates to other partitions).
You can preserve root using the ota rootkeeper, or after updating, reroot using another method.
My recommendation is to update via kies or odin with official firmware and then reroot. (Using ota rootkeeper is up to you).
Hope this helps clear some things up a little for you guys.

[Q] OTA update breaking root

Hello
I have rooted my Galaxy Note II and installed CWM for the recovery. I am also running a stock ROM. There is a new OTA update, and before I am going to do it, quick question: when I update, will I still have root access or will it break it somehow? I'm running the Stock 4.1.1
Flash stock recovery..so u can get ota then just root again..rooting takes 3 seconds

Hello,
I too had root, CWM recovery and stock ROM on my note 2 and was able to successfully take the OTA update to 4.1.2 and retain root access. I obviously have a stock recovery now after the upgrade but root is still present! I did have SuperSU (paid for version) that has the Survive OTA update mode and it worked like a charm! One thing to note is that it was not obvious at first that root was retained.
Immediately after the update, my root access failed when trying to use Titanium backup. Also, other apps requiring root access were failing as well. So, I went into SuperSU and ticked the "enable Super User" mode off and then on again and rebooted the phone.
After the reboot I noticed that Titanium Backup had root access and then verified the rest of my apps were working as well.
Three cheers to the creators of these wonderful programs.....I'm very glad I paid for the updates and got the added functionality!!
Good luck to all and hopefully it works as well for you as it did for me!!

Well, if you're feeling up to it, you could test it for the rest of us. No one seems to have reported back about anything yet. I'm sure that it will break root though.

i didnt go back and reread it but i think thats what garwynn tried and he lost root.
This is kinda required to get the OTA, isn't it?
If I understand correctly, the OTA will fail if rooted? Or is that it will fail if CWM/TW recovery is in place?

Thanks.. I thought it was one of those, just couldn't remember which. I may just hold off until I see what others are doing. I am going to look for a nice TouchWiz ROM that allows me to theme it.
Once the awesome Devs here at XDA get their hands on the code, it won't be long before we have a rootable Stock 4.3..
I've been wondering.
Do I need a stock recovery and a stock ROM to update or can I be running a custom ROM such as digiblur and update using stock recovery?

I'd just throw that under the "do not attempt" category. Odds are that while trying to apply the update, stock recovery would detect some assets that don't belong in your current build and abort the update. Also, if this update was successful and something messed up, you would now have no custom recovery. You would have to Odin back to whatever software version possible.

How do I update from stock rooted BOB7 to 5.1.1?

What is the best method to update BOB7 to 5.1.1?
Sent from my SM-N910P using xda premium
If you're not rooted, KIES or OTA are the official update methods. Either of those will download the update. OTA update patches current stock incrementally and some updates may be large. I'd prefer KIES rather than OTA if going from OB7 to OK1.
Odin is the riskier unofficial (somewhat equivalent) of KIES for rooted users. Stock tars are found in the general forum for faster downloads. Good to have latest for backup in case rooted users need to return to stock. You would need Odin to root but I wouldn't start with it until updated, if not rooted yet. But you wouldn't need Odin if remaining un-rooted.

I rarely hear that repeated for confirmation but there may be a prerequisite to start using KIES- BEFORE ROOT? Afterwards, it seems to quiry for an elusive serial number that you just can't seem to satisfy despite trying numbers from phone or original box. Some have reported KIES only works for un-rooted phones but a few reported, it works?
Anyway, that's why I also recommended KIES before root.
