NOTE II - Emergency Calls Only - Help Needed - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note II

Note II randomly has emergency call only ... i have signal bars but cant use phone text data anything
- i reset to stock rom via odin (only flashed a pda) - didn't fix
-tried another sim in it - same result
- my sim works
- phone is not stolen
- factory reset
- checked APN
- Airplane mode, reboot etc. all done
anybody have any ideas how i got to this? just switched from an iphone kinda dissapointed right now .thanks for help!

What did you do prior to having this problem?? Did you flash a Rom? And it started a lil while after that? Kinda need lil more info.
Is the phone used? Could b many things.
I'll say this if you just got the phone, and it's from a retail store return it and get another one.

More info...we need more info....
Did you check your modem ??
Did not see that on your list of repairs....and if it's wrong....no data.
Was your Odin rom complete with the baseband ????

I am having the exact same problem.
I literally didn't do anything for this to start happening. I use the I317 model of the Note 2 (obviously)
In the past couple of weeks, I am constantly losing reception for long periods of time and getting the same emergency calls only message.
I have bars as well, but don't see HSPA+ or LTE arrows... indicating data.... I don't receive texts / texts won't send.... etc. Can't use data reliant programs.
I'm beginning to get severely annoyed. Reception will eventually lock back on after about 2 hours.. .and I'll get all my alerts at once etc...
Very very annoying, why is this happening. I never did anything

This has happened to me twice.
The first time I had to restart the phone.
The second time I just tried again and it worked.
It was about two weeks between occurrences.
Never rooted.
Running stock UCAMA4.
No idea how to help you I just know what happened to me.

Network changes and downtime are not uncommon either as they upgrade and change often.
Not sure really, just thinking out loud. ...g

The only time this happens to me is when I forget to pay the bill...

I'm having the same problem as the original user. Here's the background:
I bought an AT&T unlocked phone to use with my T-Mobile account. Worked fine.
Decided to root it & remove bloatware.
Immediately upon rooting, I noticed several problems, including no network access. Decided to restore to original condition.
Flashed the complete factory default, from SamMobile, using Odin. Upon completion did a factory reset.
Most of the bugs caused by original rooting seemed to be solved. But still cannot make calls.
Upon turning it on, I get the "no network access" symbol, then I get bars, but only a couple. Any calls yield "emergency calls only" message.
I unlocked the phone again to make sure that hadn't been undone, but no change.
If I go to settings, more settings, mobile networks, network operators, default settings, manual; then it finds AT&T and 3116600.
If I do the same to my spouse's phone (same phone, same network, just never rooted) it also finds T-Mobile.
How do I get my phone to find the T-Mobile network again?
Please keep in mind that I am very green at this. All I know is what I have learned from reading online material for the last two weeks, so please try to offer any instructions as clearly and simply as possible. Thank you very much!

If the phone says "no sim inserted", your sim tray might be defective (happened to me)
if it says no network access (emergency calls only) then theres some other problem

It doesn't say anything about the sim. And actually it doesn't say anything about the network. When I first turn it on, the "no" icon (zero slash) displays in the tray. Then it gets some bars, but if I dial a call, it displays "emergency calls only".

lol guys....

Emergency calls only
I have same situation. I downloaded firmware from switzerland, then at first it looks working, then I saw the problem which is,
phone cannot connect to operator.
instead when I search for mobile networks it can find it,but cant connect. Then I realised the firmware I used did simlock on my phone
After that I tried all firmwares which is related with my region Turkey. it did not work.
I went to phone tecnical shop to repair it. They fixed it,BUT I could not upgrade sammsung software, because its modified firmware. Even if I want to change firmware again I am having same connection problem. I asked the guy who fixed the phone, how did he repaired, he said only way that to fix it,we have to have sammsungbox, sambox,or I have to change motherboard he said.

If the phone is unlocked it should find T mobile just fine but, you will not have 3g unless you flash the aws mod to use tmobile 3g. My note is unlocked and when I put a tmobile sim in it takes a few minutes for it to connect to the tmobile network.
Once you unlock a phone rooting and flashing roms won't affect the sim unlock.

Try this...
Just a thought but you can try shutting down phone, pulling out SIM card and gently use a pencil eraser to clean the gold contacts on it. Make sure that you blow/brush off any eraser particles. Put SIM back in and make sure it is in there correctly. Power on and hope for the best. Unless your service is shut down seems most "Emergency Calls Only" errors are from SIM card issues. May have to replace the SIM. No guarantees but worth a shot

[Q] Why am I not getting signal at all...anywhere?

I just got a G2. perm rooted it. and everytime upon booting up it has signal for 1 second then literally just disappears and never comes back. can't choose mobile network or anything because it can't search for it. tried doing *#*#infor#*#* and it says GSM ONLY and everytime i try to change it to WCDMA PREFERRED it keeps reverting back as soon as i exit. the only way i've been able to get signal back so far is to connect to wifi and enable wifi calling, then after disconnecting i'm able to get signal and i'm able to check the WCDMA PREFERRED option but awhile ago i was on wifi calling then left my house and it was disconnected but wasn't able to get signal again.
can anyone help me with what i should do because although i might be able to get it back through wifi calling, this will be very problematic whenever i'm not near my normal wifi locations...
thanks for the help

No it wasn't. For the past couple of days since calling tmobile, its been significantly better but today I did randomly have that same problem of no connection, but mostly right now my problem is my g2 not being able to read my phone number in "status" under "about phone" settings but it does on my n1. When I called tmobile they tried sending my number ota 3 times with no luck...

During the first 30 days you can go to a TMO store and get a new phone, pretty much "no questions asked". I'd go ahead and do that if I was you. Oh, go to a corporate store though, not a mall kiosk.
While you're there, get a new SIM, too. All free of charge.
If you still have the same problem after that, I'd try an exorcist
Is this problem solved now ? I got the same problem but have no chance to return it back.

My signal problems seemed to be resolved, at least for the past week. It was resolved by calling tmobile customer support and they did some tests. However, my phone not recognizing my phone number under settings> about phone> status, is still a problem. Even tried getting a new sim and still didn't solve the problem. Did numerous OTAs with tmobile that didn't work. My number still shows up on caller id and stuff its just that menu thing. Sounds insignificant but some apps use that to determine your phone number. Also, when putting my sim back into my nexus one, it does show my number...

easy test
if you still have any old phone in the house, or borrow a phone from a friend/co worker for a few minutes
just to swap the SIM card and try, then you can quickly figure out if it's an issue with the phone or the SIM
SIM unlocking a phone will not cause the network problem, unless the IMEI is black listed
is the phone able to find any network?
also you can use Odin to flash back to factory stock

i called tmobile and they didnt say anything,,,,
Go in to network settings and check network operators. If your phone sees T-Mobile/ATT but you cant connect then that means your phone was blacklisted for either being lost or stolen.

when i type 'search now' it doesn't find ANYTHING.
it stays on 'searching' for a while', doesn't select anything
then it comes back showing tmobile and att.
when i select tmobile (or att) it says, "your sim card does not allow a connection to this network"
If the phone was blacklisted, why would tmobile not say anything to me (and why would it only stop working now?)

leave everything else blank

I now believe that this is probably related to the same bug that is causing people to lose their ISDN and have the same loss of radio connection.

Hello. FWIW: Not quite the same problem, but the fix for me might work for you by chance.
When I got my unlock code from T-Mobile then applied it, my phone did register with the T-Mobile network, but it could not receive phone calls.
Using her phone, my girlfriend was kind enough to help me test various scenarios: phone calls in, out; sms in, out; GSM or Wi-Fi; etc. We narrowed it down to no calls in on GSM at least.
Like you I tried rebooting, but I did not get as far as re-flashing, etc. What I did try on a hunch was clearing all user and system apps' cache with Titanium Backup. VoilĂ ! It worked.
I hope that helps you with your phone (assuming you use Titanium Backup.)

[Q] S3 on Bell: not registered on network

hi everyone,
I got my S3 from Bell two weeks ago, it worked fine most of the time including calls, sms and data.
but occasionally for whatever reason the phone cannot make call or send sms, no ring for incoming call also. it shows "not registered on network" when I try to dial. at the time showing this error, there was signal on the bar.
maybe after long time, it can registered itself into network again, but most of the time, I just restart the phone and it works fine again.
I called Bell and they asked me to replace the SIM card, so I did, but I still see this error. So I think it is not SIM issue.
anyone has idea what the cause could be? or is there anyway to fix it?
I tried to search online before I ask, just couldn't find a solution so far.
so post here and hope anyone can help,
thanks for the help in advance.
I've had this issue as well.

I had this problems with rogers as well. Same as you I contacted rogers they told me to remove the sim and replace it. Worked for a while but kept happening. I got fed up and rooted then installed kyan rom and haven't had the problem since. Not sure if it was rom based or if the factory reset before flashing resolved the issue but haven't had it since. Hope someone figures this out though because it's annoying especially on a new phone that is stock.

Had this problem on bell a few times the first 2 weeks I had my phone. Went to the bell store and without hesitation they told me to change the mobile network mode from gsm/hspa+/lte
To just gsm/hspa+.
Reason given was the Lte network where I was using my phone (west island, montreal) wasn't strong enough. So my phone would switch between networks until eventually it got in that state. Personnaly I think the problem was more signal penetration into the computer lab I work in.
It's been 2 weeks stable so far. A co-worker reported the same problem to me last week and he took my advice and hasn't had the problem since.

Thank you very much for the tip. I was wondering that too, because I noticed that the network icon at top bar keep changing between H+ and LTE by itself. and I wonder why too.

SAMSUNG i747M not registered on network
I had this samsung s3 i747M from canada. Got it unlocked here in Pakistan. Placed a local sim in it. It recognizes the sim, registers it, makes calls, but then after a while, it shows "not registered on network". i restart, it registers network again, then loses it again. It keeps doing it. sometimes it is registered on network, but can't make or receive calls.
I have tried a number of things but the problem is not resolved and i'm fed up to the point that i want to throw this phone away.
The original rom had android 4.3
here's the list of things i have tried.
* changed the network mode to "GSM only" and "WCDMA/GSM (auto connect)" - NO USE
* Factory data reset a few times - NO USE
* tried a custom rom (it was so bad, i deleted it, don't even remember the name) - NO USE
* stock rom 4.4.2 from "sammobile.com" - NO USE
* tried flashing different modems from "http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1831898" - NO USE
* tried changing the options from *#2263# to my network's specifications - NO USE
* tried sims from different networks - NO USE
PLEASE IF SOMEONE CAN HELP ME OUT HERE, I'M DESPERATE

Originally it came with android 4.3. Currently it has this kitkat rom, which i downloaded from "sammobile.com".
the filename is this:

Does your carrier require an AWS-compatible phone? Does the i747m support all frequencies provided by your provider?
I'm not sure about whether an AWS phone is required or not. But it certainly supports all the frequencies provided by the networks here. I checked it by using the code *#2263# and the options have the frequency supported by my networks here, that is "ufone" and "warid"
PS. I'm not an expert on this thing, whatever i'm doing, i learnt it during the last week..

Do you know why it lost the imei during the unlock process? Does the imei # in the phone match the imei # on the label under the battery?
I dont know how it lost imei. The guy who fixed it said that the imei is corrupted and he fixed it. Now it shows the same imei as on the back of the device.
I have never had a Samsung phone lose the imei if the phone was unlocked using a code, assuming that is how your phone was unlocked.
Did you try re-injecting the imei with the efs folder? It can be done using nvwriter.
Ok. I will try that. Can u guide me how to do it? Or share a link or something.

[Q] [SOLVED (sorta)] Sgs3 i747m Service issues

First of all this is my first time posting here on xda but have read a lot of things on this website, and i apologize if i have placed this in the wrong area.
I have seen other threads about this issue but none seem to be quite like mine.
So i had cyanogenmod on my galaxy s 3 att/rogers, I had it on my phone for a long time pretty much the entire year i have had the phone, when randomly last night my service just stopped. I cant make phone calls, text, or use data. But my wifi still works. so basically my phone turned into a tablet.
Things I have tried to fix this:
1: restored using nanndroid backup (no effect)
2: flash a different rom "PAC Rom" with its kernel (no effect)
3: Restored phone to complete factory defaults using odin (no effect)
4: Tried different SIM card in my phone to see if it would work (no effect)
5: Tried my SIM in different phones (worked)
6: Restored phone to factory default using samsung kies (no effect)
So can you see my delema? No matter what i try the service just will not activate and only says "rogers emergency calls only". this phone is only around a year old.. This isn't a common thing to happen is it?
Anyways I would be very, very happy if anyone could help me fix this problem. I apologize if i get back to you slow as i have to go to work in a couple minutes, my boss is probably going to be pissed I have no phone. :crying:
Nothing? Nothing at all?
I had similar issue I just solved. I had only lost data however. I would suggest maybe checking your apn settings. It maybe flash a modem. I was able to make calls/texts no problem but no data at all. I Google the apn settings and now everything works great

Apn settings were all right. Not sure what has happened.. rogers told me the phone was toast but I have a hard time beleiving that from someone who looks at my phone for 30 seconds and says that. Either way I'm picking my note 3 up friday. Not through rogers, since they were a royal pain in my wallet. Bell ftw
Not really sure if I should mark this as solved due to the fact its not?

[Q] Help with Verizon SCH-I535 Phone to use on T-mobile

Hey everyone and thanks for taking the time to read this,
So the story goes as so: After doing some research couple months ago about the capability of the Verizon Galaxy S3 to work on T-mobile, i purchased it, and got it to successfully work on T-mobile(texts, calls, wi-fi). The problem is, i just recently upgraded to include a data plan, and i cannot access the internet, despite taking my phone to my cell phone dealer and contacting T-mobile.T-mobile even sent me a guide to do a mastery reset to factory in hopes to solve this problem, only to tell me afterwards that the phone version SCH-I535 is a "verizon locked-software" and i won't be able to set up an APN to work on the T-mobile network. This was all due to the fact that i was not able to set up a APN for T-mobile, and every time i tried to access it through setting, it brought me to a blank black page with the only option of "Reset to Default". After reading other forums and talking with some people, many have suggested i take this issue to XDA to find a solution.
So, here i am.....Does anyone know if it is possible for me to break/root/ or whatever it is called so i can successfully access the t-mobile network on my phone? Preferably an easier guide since i am sort of a newbie at this sort of stuff.
Thanks again for reading.
Before your Contract change, you were able to receive and make calls successfully with T-Mo Sim right ? Even now you can make calls too correct ? The reason I am asking this is to be able to check if you are really unlocked off of VZW. If you are not unlocked, then that would be the first step.
You are right, the APNs do drive Data Connection. If the stock firmware does not allow you to change APNs then you will have to root. Please post a screen of your Settings > About phone that shows your Rom Version, Baseband and Kernel.

Hey Perseus, thanks a lot for taking the time to reply. I bought the phone in the summer off someone who had verizon. I have always had T-mobile, and considering this phone is GSM, i decided to buy it because it would probably work for T-mobile. I had the phone unlocked, and i am currently using it to make calls, texts, and even use wi-fi with no problem. The only problem at this time is that i recently added a data plan which i cannot currently use. Here is a screen shot of what you have requested.
Thanks again
First try
Settings > More > Mobile Networks > Preferred Network Type.See what it is set to. Change it to LTE/GSM/WCDMA if needed. See the other option System Select as well.
Also separately try the following.
Hit ##DATA# in the Dialer. In the subsequent Menu choose EDIT > OTHERS > LTE APN
If all fails, please Root the phone and then try. The way you go about is
1. Flash a Custom Recovery via Odin. Make sure the version of Custom recovery is for your model D2VZW not D2TMO.
2. Flash a SuperSU zip file via Recovery and then hit fix permissions in the recovery.
Try the APN Settings after that. IF you can actually access them, then set them according to this link.
If all the above fails, I'd suggest a custom Rom for d2VZW.
You will never get 4g trust me I had one... you will just get the E

Ok, so i tried to changed it to LTE and i got no service at all, so i switched it back to Global. I also tried the dialer thing several times, and got the " connection problem or invalid MMI code"
So i guess i am going to have to root the phone? Does anyone know a good video tutorial or written tutorial on how to safely do this? Also, what exactly is rooting?

You have to enable the mmi codes to use them. Anyway as stated above your reply you will never get 3g or 4g just edge (seen it personally) which is pretty darn slow.. Not worth it if you ask me and be paying for data.. If you still want to root it and keep trying to add sons check the Verizon forums.. They could probably help you a lot more than on this side of the forums

Guys, he is not getting ANY data signal at all. His problem isn't getting the specific icon but being not able to change APNs.
@HackThisThing, you are better off following up on Verizon Device forum. That forum does have a video tutorial for Rooting. Here's forum link.
I don't think you will be able to change APNs without rooting. I checked with a buddy of mine who has the same device as you.
Here's a good answer to What is Rooting ?
Even if you CAN fix it, why bother if you can only get 2G? I'd sell it or trade it for a phone that's more compatible with T-Mobile 's network instead of paying for data and only getting dial-up speeds. I get that solving problems is fun, but OP do you want to live with only 2G?

I don't agree with that assessment. Just like the T999L phone, this device will work on LTE Bands just fine. OP just needs to wait for LTE to be rolled out in their area. There's a coverage map and roll out schedule on T-Mo website and the T-Mo News blog.
It's worth a look, but could still leave them with patchy coverage. If it's going to be a while, why wait when it's not hard to just trade the phone? I guess I don't see a reason why hold out on getting a Verizon phone to work when you could just get one that works now with little to no monetary loss. It's just a Verizon S3, not really something worth "waiting" for when they could get the same thing but more functional on their network of choice.
They made an honest mistake and waiting might give them "good enough" service - but other than that they're stuck with dial up speed only and risk bricking a phone they could just trade or sell now.
Maybe I'm just impatient and risk averse.

OP has already purchased this VZW version.
Same Problem...

How to get any type of data...?
