Hi forum,
My phones screen turns itself on often for no reason. I have noticed that it will turn on when it connects to my home or work WiFi when its in range but the screen stays on and doesn't time out after 30 seconds as set in the display settings, which can be frustrating because my phone can be on in my pocket for a few hrs wasting my battery.
My phone is running Android 4.1.2 stock Samsung rom not rooted.
Cheers
Do you use any app to manage your WiFi network or any other connection like Juide Defender?

Hey Memphis_
Yes i do, I have Juice Defender. This issue was still happening before I installed it tho
You don't have any apps installed which might be set to turn on the screen with a shake, right?

Hi PhilipTD,
No I don't have any apps installed like that. I will stop using juice defender over the next few days to see if that fixes the issue.

Hey everyone
Does anyone here use tasker or have any recommended profiles to help save battery life?

Try Juice Defender with 3g control enabled.
I have mine set to enable every 30mins with good results..
With LOTS of syncing enabled, i get roughly 1% an hour decrease whilst on standby!! Unplugged at 1am on 89% when i went to bed, at 9am when i got up it was at 81%...
Hope this helps!

Check WIKI on Tasker site, data profiles created by "brandall" from XDA
Tasker data profiles are better than Juice Defender
JuiceDefender has some annoying bugs in it at the moment (some like issues it has with lockscreen/display timeout) have been around for 4months+ and they still haven't sorted them out) so I've switched to Green Power which seems to do the job very well. Simple and no fuss.
Hi. Anyone here good at creating profiles?
I would like some help. If i want a profile that:
IF screen has been locked for 1 minute, i want WiFi to shut down.
And when i unlock the phone again, i want it to turn on.
But - i don't just want a "toggle wifi by hitting powerbutton"-function,
I only want this to apply if i had wifi on in the first place.
The reason i want this profile is:
If i forget to charge the phone at night, and have wifi going, i have 20% less battery when i wake up. Or if im at a friends house, connected to a wifi... well, same here. If it just lays in my pocket connected to X, i want it to shut down when screen is off. Saves alot of juice.

why dont you use tasker for that,
you can do almost anything with that app.
Creating profiles in tasker isn't a huge difficult task, its easy, Just use trial n error to see if it works.

Why don't just use the stock android checkbox in settings that's there for that? o_ô
Go to settings/network and wifi/wifi settings/hit the menu button and tap advanced parameters/wifi sleep politic/check "when screen goes off".
It does exactly what you described...

Okay, i'll try to find a way on my own..
The reason i don't use androids built-in thing for that is because it drains battery for some strange reason.

Well mine is working fine, no draining at all (wifi on 24h24 with this option checked and my phone drain only 1% every 5 or 6h if the screen is off). The thing is that it shut off the wifi only if no app needs it, so my bet is that those who have a battery drain just have some apps that don't let the phone going in deep sleep.

Hi, if you try LLAMA app instead I could talk you through it (as your not getting an answer you want).
As far as I can tell, LLAMA can do everything that tasker and locale can do but its free. It's also very good on your battery and can use cell towers instead of gps for location.

Not sure if I'm in the right place, new to smartphones. Got myself a Galaxy S2 and rooted it. Main point,
I'm using Tasker and I'm trying to have it set so that it's in Airplane Mode when I have an Alarm set so I get no calls/texts during my slumber.
So far, best thing I've done is the phone goes to Airplane Mode between 00:00 and 0600 everyday as well as when light levels are between 0 and 28 - not sure if the light levels are like, set too low.
So far I love Tasker but very little support online and Tasker Wiki doesn't really help. Trying my best with the trial and error method.
Thanks

Good shout on Green Power. I've had some issues with Juice Defender Ultimate lately and Green Power seems to do more or less the same without the issues.
£1.50 well spent - cheers for the tip

hi,
i'm using "setting profiles".
in the market you have a free and a payment app.
the developers answer the emails at decent speed...
Anyone notice that when you have the screen off and wifi on your downloads from the browser dont continue to download? I have the same issue with dropbox exporting as well. I have the wifi sleep policy to always on (never turn off) in the settings too. Any idea?
I have noticed that also. It doesn't make sense to have the screen on the whole time you are downloading a large file though. I'm assuming the wifi never sleep setting is not working.

I have only noticed this with franco.Kernel when the Hotplug option is enabled.

Did it work?
heavy power saving kicks in when the screen is off, so transfers pretty much drop dead. You'll have to keep the screen on when transferring large files

I wish there was a way to stop this from happening. Sometimes I transfer a bunch of music from my NAS over SMB. It takes a little time. It's a pain in the rear to keep touching the screen to make sure the transfer doesn't die. It seems like "Keep wifi on during sleep" policy should fix that but it doesn't. What exactly does that setting do if not that?
My guess is that maybe it would be nice if the file explorer apps had a setting to "Keep phone awake while transferring files". I'll have to start looking into that to see if I'm just missing that setting.
I dont know why the wifi sleep policy setting doesnt work for some people. But mine does, wifi stays on with the screen off for hours. I often download large files and it works just fine leaving it idle with screen off.
sorry to hijack - slightly off topic but i lose signal when the screen is off
any thoughts on that also guys?

Me too. Noticed randomly that the WiFi started turning off when the screen was off, and it seems the sleep policy was changed automatically somehow... but I switched it back and I haven't had any issues since.

Mine was set correctly. It appears changing it, exiting settings, then re-enabling it may have fixed it.

Wifi Fixer by Zanshin-g1 once you download this app it will monitor your wifi real time and get rid of any connectivity issues when they are about to strike. I found it to be the perfect app to solve wifi issues. I hope it helps you aswell.

You could use an app like Tasker to set the display timeout to n hours if your file manager app is on the foreground. Add an exit task to reset it to default timeout if the file manager is no longer on the foreground.
When I turn off the screen of my phone, I lose my wifi and data connections. The icons of them in the status bar turn white rather than the usual green. The only way I have found to fix this is to put the phone in airplane mode then take it out. Which is really inconvenient EVERY time I want to use this. I know that when the WiFi turns green it means that the phone is connected to Google. But it never goes back from white to green even after I let it sit for a few seconds and try something to push data through. Even when it's green it doesn't work until I reset the radio.
Things to know:
1. I am rooted.
2. It is the AT&T LG Nitro HD (LG P930)
3. It is the V10f software version.
4. I have not tried a factory reset yet because of the hassle. Yes I know about titanium, it's just time consuming.
If anybody else has this problem, please let me know. Hopefully we can get this fixed.
Update: I fixed my problem by installing Wi-Fi fixer. But it still makes me mad that this occurs. Maybe we can try to find the source of the problem.

Nope, I'm not running juice defender. The only task killing app I use is Advanced Task Killer which I only ever use when I need to quickly restart an app, I don't use it every 10 minutes like some people do.
I had a weird incident where I lost my wifi radio...wouldn't detect any wifi ssids...don't know what caused it. But your situation seems similar...sadly I have know idea how it got fixed...rebooted phone a couple of times and haven't had a problem since.
So here I am. I'm using this forum so much and i've always found everything i need so i don't post often. But now i've a problem and i can't find out the solution.
So.. i've got a Nexus and use FoxHound ROM. I also use JuiceDefender. The problem is after a couple of times i wake the screen the network doesn't start.
I explain. I've got signal, i can receive messages and calls, but the network doesn't start. I can't access the internet. Neither market, or any app that uses mobile data. I've tried to disable Juice Defender, to manually reactivate the data, but i have to reboot and that's annoying. Any ideas?
Ah, WiFi works properly and so does bluetooth. Thanks.
Hold 'Power' button and activate 'Data Network Mode' if available.

I don't have that option.
so you disable and uninstall Juice Defender, then reboot, and it still does this?
I haven't tried to uninstall Juice Defender but if i disable it, the network doesn't restart. The fact is that if i don't use juice defender the network doesn't go off.
Uninstall JD and then check if the problems still persists or not!

The problem disapper as soon as i disable juice defender and reboot, but i think the problem is the network doesn't turn on after a couple of times i turn it off.
So, you tried unistalling it, right?
Well, you must have checked the data network settings?
Do you have any other app that can block services like NQ Mobile Security?

So... the problem was Juice Defender lol. Unless you can reproduce the exact problem with JD uninstalled.
Don't ask why but now everything works fine..
Yeah JD is deff the problem here, that why I quit using it! It for some reason sucks on the GN. Only use I have for it now is when Im at festivals and it would prop be just as easy to enable/disable airplane mode manually.
To start off with; i get good battery life; right now I'm at 1 day 3 hours and I have 39% left.
I was wondering however, does setting the Wifi to go off when the screen is off help significantly on the battery? And if so...is there some other negative issue that I'm not aware of if I set it this way?
I'm pretty sure any sort of data connection will use more of your battery than WiFi will. So if you're always around a strong WiFi connection you probably should leave it on at all times.

Oh that is funny.
I just do everything everyone else does:
1.) Screen off when not in use
2.) Screen brightness down as much as possible.
3.) Dark theme.
4.) Tasker profiles to turn off wifi when not near my house or work.
5.) Tasker profile to turn off GPS when not actively using certain apps.
6.) Tasker profile to turn off BT when not connected.
I also am probably a light user...the only thing that I do beyond normal phone use is to watch Netflix a slight bit a day and stream Spotify a bit.
I also don't play games except Words with friends.
No FB no locations, no nothing like that.
Wifi off and data off would be most helping when screen off
