I need this clear in my head, cos I am going around in circles trying to get a ROM working on my HOX.
I have an unlocked HOX and I use a MAC.
My understanding of what I need to do to get a custom ROM working is as follows (please correct me if/where I go wrong):
Phone needs to be unlocked: YES, DONE.
Preferred ROM downloaded from chosen XDA link: YES, DONE.
Boot.img file from said ROM also obtained: YES, DONE.
Via fastboot, I need to firstly flash the recovery (This, I can do. I'm using ClockworkMod 5.8.4.0)
I know that I then need to flash the downloaded 'Boot.img' (I don't know if it needs to be located on the SDCard first, or straight from the Mac).
Looks like I now need to flash empty the cache (Again, this I can do).
Then I know that I need to boot into recovery.
Copy ROM.zip over onto the SDCard.
Mount the SDCard and select 'install zip from sdcard' then select the ROM.zip.
Reboot system now.
ROM should work.
So, why am I getting stuck on the ROM's boot up splash screen
You need to flash the boot.img from the fastboot folder on the mac
Its the same as flashing the recovery
But replace :
Fastboot flash recovery recovery.img with
Fastboot flash boot boot.img
And don't forget to make a full wipe in the recovery before installing the new rom

The main thing here is flashing boot.img that belongs to the ROM that you are flashing.
When you flash the custom rom that you have, you need to flash its boot.img.
Why don't you mount usb storage in recovery and put in the MIUI rom.zip that you want to flash ?

hi thanks done it now
hey, so my device where stuck on pull the ring thng
so i thought it's a softwere prob, i upgrade my hboot to 1.31 so i could install the JB
i found there is no RUU fore my HTC_J15 !!
and i can't go back to ICS .. i unlock the boot so i can try some roms
same prob, any slu?
Why can't you go back to ICS or install a custom Sense ROM?
flash the boot.img and the ROM. Easy.
I have an idea to get you back to stock, from there you can update official. Its not the ruu method. I will explain later
I need your main version and cid number
Fastboot oem readcid
and
Fastboot getvar version-main
Post these results
Pyschic prediction:
2.17.401
HTC__J15
If that is so, you need to fine the matching nandroid backup in the nandroid backup collection thread in the general section
Restore it and flash back the stock recovery .... After this you can update official when the update is available. Then you are on a complete stock rom
CID: HTC_J15
Versoin mine: 3..14.401.619
it should be 415 right ? :0
i can't wait for the official RUU ! plz it's not my device i was acting smart and it's turn that i'm the dumbest ever
Well you can not use the European 3.14.401 ruu because that CID has been pulled off from the RUU but i don't know why !
and there is no matching nandroid backup in the nandroid backup thread in the general section. I already looked there.
I think you have a serious problem here ...
But......when you installed a different rom, did you make sure you wiped everything that you could wipe in the recovery (cache, dalvik cache, system, data) ?
It seems to me that you didn't do a full wipe, or you didn't flash the boot.img from the rom in fastboot usb mode ?
Download this file
http://db.tt/eLoVUcRc
Copy it to the phones sdcard, first you flash the boot.img in fastboot usb mode then you enter the recovery and do a factory reset, then you flash the file i gave you (just like a rom, it will wipe all) then you flash the rom !
Should be oke after that !
i did a cache wipe from the fastboot command .. i can't get into recovery it show a red triangle i try to re-lock and unlock it again root and install the clockmode and still with this prob .. so i try to flash a lot of boot.img file from some rom but nothing happen
it was working fine with full access to recovery mod till i flash a boot.img so i can install a room, there my problem start
i think there is no solution for my stupid mistake but if there any i'll be like, thank uuuuu
Well check all this .... Bootloader unlocked, if not unlock it and flash a custom recovery
http://db.tt/Krlm4dPs
Download this one and rename it to recovery.img and copy it in the fastboot folder, put the phone in fastboot usb mode and flash the recovery
Fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Fastboot erase cache
Then you flash the boot.img of the rom you downloaded (its inside the rom.zip)
Copy the boot.img file also to the fastboot folder and flash it
Fastboot flash boot boot.img
Fastboot erase cache
Then you enter the recovery and do a full wipe including wiping the dalvik cache under the tab ADVANCED !
Then you install the rom.zip
okay i'll try this tomorrow, again step by step so i make sure i didn't miss anything
thank u .. i really want to try it know but it's 2a.m and i have a morning work
thank u again .. i'll update u with wut happen with me .
Good ! And charge the battery to a 100% before you start ! Can save you alot of trouble !
hey .. okay i start from da beging and so far every thing is good, i can access to the clockworkmod
now that i can't get inside the phone how can i flash the room ? it's the only step i miss

Did you read all this ....flashed the correct boot.img ?
You can flash the rom by pressing flash zip from sdcard (or something similar, can't recall at the moment) and select the rom.zip
And you can copy the rom.zip to the phones sdcard by mounting it as usb disk under the tab mounts & storage
hey, ya now the device finally work .. thanks god, and thank u
but the same problem, three soft button not working !
i did the hole thing 5 days trying for nothing ? damn it :crying:
so it's a hardware problem right ?
I guess that's a hardware failure yes, of it happens on every rom

Hi I have a India "HTC__038" CID HTC One X. I tried to install CM10.1 so these are the steps i did before I got stuck.
1. unlocked bootloader from HTC.
2. flashed cm10.1 nightly and gapps
unfortunately since i did not backup my ROM i am struggling to get my phone working. Please help me. Super crazed out.
You need to flash the boot.img file, and you need to install the vendors file too !
Make a full wipe in the recovery and install cm10.1 then the gapps and then the vendors
http://db.tt/u5FF3jgi
Then you boot into the bootloader
Adb reboot bootloader (from the commandprompt)
Then flash the boot.img file, its in the cm10.1.zip file
Fastboot erase cache
Fastboot flash boot boot.img
Fastboot erase cache
Fastboot reboot
hi i am a newbie so please can we do this one step at a time please.
What recovery did you flash ? Type and version number ?
Edit : Ow and now did you flash the custom recovery ?
i did not have a recovery when i flashed it
You cant install a new rom without a custom recovery !
The basic steps are :
Unlock the bootloader
Flash a custom recovery
Make a full wipe
Install the new rom inside the custom recovery
Flash the boot.img with fastboot commands from the pc to the phone
You didn't do your homework mate
Go in here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1832891
There are tutorials on Adb/fastboot commands ....
thats the problem. the ROM is deleted and I have no way of adding any ROM now. can we chat thru IM this is taking too long.
thank you. i have my phone now unlocked but i am trying to flash the "boot.img" (from CM10.1) and then going to recovery->backup and restore but still this does not do anything
Did you flash a custom recovery ? Flash this one
http://db.tt/Krlm4dPs
Put it in the fastboot folder on the pc and Renske it to recovery.img
Put the phone in the bootloader and open a command window inside the fastboot folder. Hold shift + right mouse click then open command window here
Then you type :
Fastboot erase cache
Fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Fastboot erase cache
Then enter the recovery and go to mounts and storage - mount as usb diskdrive/mass storage. Copy the cm10.1, gapps and the vendors file there
Then perform a full wipe
Factory reset
Wipe cache partition
Advanced - wipe dalvik cache
Mounts and storage - format cache, data, system
Then do what i wrote my first reply
Ps installing the rom is done with the option :
Install zip from sdcard - choose zip from sdcard.
now how do i copy CM10.1, Gapps and vendor files from computer to phone. I am not able to see the phone on my disk drive.
Mount it as a usb mass storage device in the mounts and storage menu inside the custom recovery
WOW AWESOME. got it installed now. YOU SAVED MY DAY(/NIGHT). now time to spend time and get my phone back to how it was before. THANK YOU. THANK YOU.

Hello guys
I rooted my phone recently and I am using CM10.1 since. I wanted to switch to different roms using ROM manager but every time I try it it just reboots back to CM.... idk what to do...
I have an HOX Int trying to switch from CM 10.1 to Nocturnal xi40.
Thanks in advance)
Don't use ROM manager...
1. Download the ROM, extract the boot.img to fastboot folder and copy the rom.zip to your phone.
2. Go to fastboot mode and flash the boot.img via fastboot and then 'fastboot erase cache'.
3. Go to recovery make a full wipe...(Data/cache/dalvic)
4. Now flash the ROM.zip from recovery.
5. Reboot!
Follow these steps every time you flash a new ROM!

I know what you mean but mount as usb drive must work. Do you use the original HTC usb cable ? Are you using a direct usb 2.0 port on the pc ?
And if you see the : unmount and go back text you are in the mounting menu, at that point the sdcard is being mounted ! Don't tap "go back" or "unmount"

I know this may have been answered several times. I did a search too, but to be honest couldn't find something to the point.
Can someone post an easy guide of the files to download and the commands to type in the Command Prompt to install 4.3?
I'm currently on 4.2.2 (LiquidSmooth). Rooted obviously with TWRP recovery. I have the ADB and fastboot drivers installed in my PC.
This is what I want to know.
1. Flashing pure stock 4.3 and wipe everything (including SDcard - I will take a backup)
2. Updating the bootloader
3. Updating the radio
4. Updating the stock recovery
5. Installing TWRP recovery for 4.3
Will be glad if someone could help me.
Thank you.
you didnt search very well...

Just use this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766475

Hi, let me try to help you
Galaxy Nexus is my first smartphone. So i'm pretty new at flashing things. I did some research last year to learn how to flash stuff in it and that's how i learned to make a fresh install:
-Make sure you have the SDK platform-tools and the Galaxy Nexus driver properly installed on your PC. Also, make sure you have USB debuging enabled on your device.
-Download the factory image that fits your phone at https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
-Open up the tgz file you just downloaded and extract the files:
-boot.img
-bootloader-maguro-primemd04.img
-radio-maguro-i9250xxlj1.img
-recovery.img
-system.img
-userdata.img
Extract the files in the platform-tools folder to make things easier.
-Connect your Nexus to your PC, open the command prompt, go to the platform-tools folder and type
(Do not turn off, disconnect or close the cmd prompt windows until everything is done. Again, make sure you have the nexus driver properly installed on your Windows)
Code:
adb reboot-bootloader
(this command will reboot your device to recovery mode)
With your device on recovery mode, type the following commands to erase your device:
Code:
fastboot erase boot
Hit enter, then:
fastboot erase cache
Hit enter, then:
fastboot erase recovery
Hit enter, then:
fastboot erase system
Hit enter, then:
fastboot erase userdata
-Now you're going to flash the new files you have downloaded and extracted steps before:
Code:
fastboot flash bootloader bootloader-maguro-primemd04.img
(or whatever name your bootloader img file has. In this case the bootloader file is "bootloader-maguro-primemd04.img")
Code:
fastboot reboot-bootloader
(you'll need to reboot after flashing the bootloader)
Code:
fastboot flash radio radio-maguro-i9250xxlj1.img
Flash the radio
Code:
fastboot reboot-bootloader
Reboot again
Code:
fastboot flash system system.img
Flash system
Code:
fastboot flash userdata userdata.img
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Code:
fastboot reboot-bootloader
We are almost done!
Code:
fastboot erase cache
Code:
fastboot reboot
Done! Reboot to Android. The first boot may take some more time than the usual. Don't worry!
-
If you want to flash a custom recovery, download it from their website, go into fastboot mode and flash it using the command to flash the recovery.
Code:
fastboot flash recovery [recovery filename].img
The same command used when flashing the recovery on the fresh install above
That's the way i learned how to do it from scratch. In case someone more experienced has any thoughts about it, i'd like to hear as i'm not an expert and learned by researching it on my own...
This is how it's done, PROPER. Well done, mnoguti.
a maguro wrote this.
@mnoguti: You have said that to flash a custom recovery, one needs to go to the recovery mode and flash the custom recovery, but you said that flashing the stock recovery should be done in bootloader.
Is it fine to flash custom recovery from bootloader instead of recovery?

you don't have to go into the recovery mode to flash recovery, just boot into fastboot mode and flash recovery using command:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

obviously replace the recovery.img with the name of the custom recovery file you downloaded, make sure the custom recovery file is in the same folder as fastboot/adb otherwise you'll have to do it like:
fastboot flash recovery C:\Downloads\recovery.img

Yes, that's what I thought. Thank you.
I had initially felt that stock recovery can flashed only in bootloader and custom recoveries can be flashed only by booting into stock recovery. But somewhere in my mind had a doubt on it and so asked. Thanks for clearing the doubt.
And a big thanks to @mnoguti for posting those steps. Worked like a charm for me.
Obviously he meant fastboot mode..
