Should need i root my phone to Flash any kernal ? - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am trying to install a custom ROM, first thing is to flash .587 ftf. But after i flash it successfully using flash tool, the phone reboots and returns a lot of "Unfortunately the process. blah blah blah has stopped" the phone becomes unstable and i get a boot loop.. I have done this before (flashing .587 ftf) i will work like butter. But i dont know what is wrong now. When i was using Omega ROM, it suddenly got strucked and reboot several , times. Now i flashed a GB ftf. Can anyone help me, how can i make the .587 ftf work..? what is the reasom behind that? And even i tried to relock the boot loader and update using sony pc companion. It ended up in a failed error message.
Please HELP
thanks in Advance..!

No, you do not need root to install kernel.
No, you do not need to flash stock ICS/GB if you are going to install full fresh custom ROM.

Are you flashing the arc S or arc ftf. You need to flash the Arc S version as it gives u more internal memory needed by the rom.

Why don't you go ask doomlord or make question in doom's thread to get answer quickly ? If I were you, I'll backup via CWM mod and reflash fw .62 then flash doom kernel v19. Finally, wipe full and restore. Your current data will be saved for sure.

it is the same like me
install cwm, then choose the apply update from sdcard, then locate the file from your card.
Simple as that.

How To Install JJ's HYBRID ROM

Hey guys,
I had an Xperia Play for sometime. I taken the plunge to install a custom rom. I have tried before but I keep failing as my phone gets stuck at the Sony Ericsson logo.
Basically I want to install JJ's HYBRID ROM
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1573547
It says to boot in CWM which I did and do a full wipe and flash. I wipe then install zip file.
I am using 4.0.2.a.0.42 rooted with CWM and bootloader unlocked. I am also using stock kernel. mainly because I dont know how to install doomkernel because I dont know what is fastboot and how to use it because majority of the posts assume you know about this.
Also I want to try to jokawild rom but it tells me to flash to 0.62 baseband. but I cant root it aso how do I install cwm. Am I missing something does doomkernel come with cmw? sorry im a noob
Please help!
thanks in advance
I think DoomKernel comes already pre-rooted
There's a thread somewhere about installing and using fastboot and flashtool. If you can't find it, try Google
First time you use it is nervewracking but as soon as you get the hang of it you'll be able to type the console commands from memory

It's usually written on page where the ROM is posted, just check back to that ROM page and search kernel used. Remember, if it's entirely new, flash kernel first then flash ROM. If the ROM use the same kernel you've flash before, just flash ROM only
Hope it helps

That one goes with stock kernel, doomkernel snd arcknight.
Did you flash it over a gingerbread rom ? If so first flash a stock ics with flashtool and then go for the MooDeD.

[Q] XTXperience 9 problem. don't bite my head off guys.

I am pretty new to flashing ROMS and rooting. I rooted my S2 back in 2011. but since then I haven't. So i though I would do it with the Xperia S.
I installed XTXperience 9, unlocked bootloader. rooted n fastboot. I downloaded cwm recovery. cleared everything. installed the ROM, and It has got stuck in boot loop.
I was on the 6.1.A.2.45 firmware if that helps?
could someone please give me some short instructions and tell me what I am doing wrong I need this ROM looks so cool!
Please don't bite my head off either. I need help. it's only way i'll learn
Please someone
If you have unlocked bootloader, why don't you install a custom kernel? Like Advanced ICS Kernel, ELiTE, etc.

Not sure how to do that yet. would that possibly fix the boot loop I am having??
I've never installed a recovery manually, because I've always flashed a custom kernel with a recovery included, maybe that's why you're having a boot loop but I'm not sure.
If you already unlocked the bootloader you should flash a stock based kernel and that's it.

I unlocked the bootloader before it got in the bootloop. after flashing firmware I guess it is still unlocked. just need to root it again
If you already have you bootloader unlocked just flash a custom kernel! If you flash a ROM after that, it will be pre-rooted.

Can't install Custom ROM

Hi i just got an arc form my friend to play with it & i am not noob with all this.
my problem is after installing custom roms like "Iridescent_Zed_III" & The Awesome™ ROM phone either boots up with FCs or just
stays bootlooping.
So i checked the system partition space and its less that the required by rom, so what can i do to increase the size of /system?
there should be a way as people are enjoying those roms w/o problem, so please tell me what can i do?

First flash Arc S stock ICS firmware, then flash custom kernel and then the ROM.
if you have any problem , just use Sony flash tool EMMA, and always you need to flash kernel from custom ROM, it`s the boot.img inside the zip file the ROM , and then installit from the sd card, if you dont probably you`ll stuck i n boot loop.
