[Q] Thinking about getting a Note 2 - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was thinking about getting a Note 2, i dont really see a point in the S4, its basicallly a miniature Note 2 with a slightly sharper screen. But a friend of mine has a Note 2, and his one after about 6 months of use is slowed to a crawl, ive got a trusty Galaxy S1 handy and even that outpaced it through the general UI although i didnt have many apps on it. How bad is the lag? And is it only with a the stock roms? Surely 2 GB of RAM is enough to keep it running without problems.

Does your friend by any chance have eleventy billion apps installed and storage full of crap they never use?
Lag should not be an issue. Even if it is, backup - wipe - restore - good as new.
Sent from my GT-N7105 using xda premium

Well ive just come from s3 and its a lot faster with less or no lag, and loving bigger screen
Sent from my GT-N7105 using xda app-developers app

Yeah wondering the same - how did he get it to lag? I use custom touchwiz based ROM, debloated, and there's zero lag.

Lag? What does this word mean? Buy the note ii and you wont regret it....also check if your friend has the phone in power saving mode! only there i can see lag!

I think your friend installed a lot of apps that resides in the memory and run on background. I think most users here doesn't have that problem even on stock rom.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using Tapatalk 2

After almost 9 months of owning not a slightest lag, mine is not rooted and complete stock.

I don't know what the hell lag means. My one only freeze for nanosecond when I go from apps to widgets.

Port Gingerbread to G nexus?

I am wondering if its possible to port or compile gingerbread 2.3.3 to the galaxy nexus ?? i know this is a bit awkward but i don't like ICS its horrible and feels sluggish .... its too different from the GSII i used to have and plus, wont it make the phone faster since 2.3.3 is an old os to me its like i downgraded from the galaxy s II cause its slower i cant believe this is googles "pure android" is it possible ?
I'm sure its technically possible. It will most likely never happen.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
ICS destroys Gingerbread in every way I've found so far, bar none, end of story. I'm even using an underclocked kernel and it doesn't skip a beat plus I'm averaging 18 hours of battery with moderate use!
If you're finding ICS laggy at all on the Galaxy Nexus then you're definitely doing it wrong... more than likely it's a crap app or two screwing you over.
rAy
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
No, even if it was possible it's not going to make your phone faster. If anything ICS is the more efficient OS. The reason the Nexus sometimes feel sluggish compared to the GS2 is because they are both running with similar specs but the Nexus is running at a higher resolution.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
Man, aside from the camera, the GalNex is better than my old Epic Touch 4G in every way...using one of my devices on GB after using ICS is horrible. GB feels unbelievably dated in comparison. There are all these devices dropping still running GB, and it's hard for me to even look at any of them as appealing. Anything not running ICS is automatically a step below the rest...its just so damn night and day. Played with a friends Razr, loved the form, but using it just felt the same as every other Android in the last 3 years. ICS feels nothing like the crusty old Android everyone has become used to.
You are holding it wrong...

Buy a Nexus One.
**** this kind of threads.. Is it possible to install windows 3.1 on a core i7? Is it possible to install a 4 cylinders engine to a ferrari? Is it possible to use a NES controller in a PS3? Yes might be, but nobody will waste time doing such stupid things... If you want that, why dont you waste your own time and do it yourself?
Pure Google doesn't mean hardware drivers updates for old hardware.. Its like saying that pure Microsoft computer will create drivers for the Last generation nvidea video card to run with pure Microsoft windows xP for not going to much back in time, they wont support drivers for older OSs

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Antutu and Quadrant

I got to test the SGN2 last night and i have to say, I LOVE IT! I am getting myself this phone for Christmas. Anyway enough babbling...check out these scores from Antutu and Quadrant. Blew my 3D out of the water.

I used to root and run Roms but I feel that in some ways rooting almost shortens my phones life. I bought an Evo 3D and decided not to root and the phone runs great on stock ICS. And I do agree that this phone is topdog amongst the rest. Can't wait to get my hands on mine.

2 years ago I got myself the Evo 4g, had it stock for the 1st year (because I didn't know about rooting) then I got the samsung galaxy tab 8.9. I wanted to use the tab at work & someone mentioned rooting for free wifi tether. Best thing I ever did. I got the flashing sickness. I would sometimes flash 4 to 5 roms a day. Now I have the amazing note2. Anyway, my Evo looks brand new, rooting it didn't harm it in the least. It made it a better phone. Now it's a media device. Just my 2ยข

I had my mind set on getting the note 2 ever since I heard about it, but after watching a video on YouTube that compared the note 2 and the DNA, I'm not so sure. The video ran every benchmark that antutu has to offer and the DNA beat the note 2 in almost every test by a little. Also, the DNA has a larger resolution.
Anyone have any thoughts on this?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda app-developers app
Benchnarks are relative. You dont know if its been overclocked or if one has a bunch of apps or services running. You have to look at the specs and see if its better. I ran both of these benchmarks after reading this and my phone had better results several times and worse results several times.

I think you have a point. I noticed that the note 2 has a faster clock speed on it's CPU but thought that perhaps the make of the CPU alone could make a difference in performance (Intel CPUs vs AMD CPUs for example).
In regards to resolution, has anyone seen the difference between the note 2 and the HTC DNA? I don't think the video review does a good job of showing the picture quality of each phone.

I have played with both devices and while the DNA is a nice device it does feel sluggish at times especialy when hopping in between different open programs.
As for the display, its all about user preference. I prefer the Note for the vibrant colors. The DNA seemed a little crisper but it also bothered my eyes after staring at it for awhile.

I believe there is a comparison between the two phones as they are both rather large phones and leaders in performance.
I personally don't consider the s pen the note 2's defining characteristic (although I can see why some would). The s pen aside, the note 2 is a beast of a phone. I think of the s pen as an added bonus, similar to my Samsung Epic 4g's slide out keyboard.

These would be the least of the things I would use to consider a new phone. I was just running these and was suprised at the score. I've been set on this phone for a while. And if I don't get it, ill probably consider another HTC. I love the sense.

I always find myself messing with the benchmark apps of Quadrant and Antutu, it does do a good comparison. And for those who say some times it is slower and sometimes higher.. When you run a car/motorcycle on the dyno or quarter mile don't you also get higher and lower results? It may not be the most concrete comparison system but it isn't garbage.(not saying anyone in HERE called it garbage but have heard it in other places). Anyways for a 7600 score on quadrant what were you running for clock speed min max, the gpu settings etc. I noticed you were on the Venum Ice reborn ROM. it is Odexed, aren't those supposed to be faster?
Also how do the fellas on top of the Antutu boards running the Gn2 run the test at resolutions of like 720x8 and other crazy res's like that?
I had a couple real low 7k quadrant runs but they got wiped flashing ROM's and not saving it. but here's what I do have.

More comfortable?

So the Samsung guy paid a visit and brought the AT&T version of the S4 with him...my question is: Is this better than our Note 2? I don't mean internally or as far as screen. It does everything the Note can do and more without need of a stylus AND has Multi-Window, all in a smaller package. Is this the ultimate device in terms of power AND comfort? I, like many, have that nagging obsession of buying everything that comes out...so I will get it. How about you? Would u switch because of the S4's much smaller size?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Tapatalk 2
The main reason I bought the note was the size. Would never get another phone simple for a smaller size.
So anything below 5.5" is too small? My S3 feels tiny in my hand after using my Note and the fact that everything is smaller on the screen doesn't help either. I wonder how much of a difference it'll be between the Note screen and S4 in everyday use.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Tapatalk 2
I would stay with the note, mostly because I'm used to it now lol. But I would go to the s4 mostly because of 4.2.2 on it

How to make android apps run like ios?

Ok so here is my dilemma.... I had an iPhone 5 for a period of two months. I hated it. But the one thing that i liked from ios itself was the way it ran its apps. Whenever i opened any app, it paused whatever else was running in order for the current app to run smoother. Even playing games on my s3 has las lag, while in ios they dont. I dont do much multitasking, so that's why i was wondering if this implement would be possible. I realize things like screen size and other things come into play, but is it something i can fathom at all?

The GS3 can play almost all games except a few high end ones in my experience. Also, the GS3 came out about half a year before the iPhone 5 did. Not only that, the GPU, at least the LTE version with Snapdragon processor is not as powerful as the iPhone 5 GPU. For gaming, not all games will play lag free. The newer, more powerful GPU's in some of the latest high end Android smartphones will do better. I have the Snapdragon 600 with Adreno 320 and it handles games way better than my GS3.
Pros and cons. The GS3 is still a great device. I just wouldn't expect to play all high end games.

Have you gotten to play with an s4? How are you liking the one? And if so how's it compare to an s4?
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda premium
I am aware of many reviews mentioning slight lag with the GS4. Although, turning off a lot of the features you don't use will help some. Without rooting you are allowed to disable a lot of the BS. In this regard, I honestly have not seen or noticed any lag or stutter on my HTC One. My htc one really just runs smooth.
The brief time I messed with the GS4 I liked it. I really enjoyed my GS3 and feel I would love the GS4. Both really are great high end smartphones. I don't agree with a lot of people knocking the GS4 for looking so much like the last year's model. It's no different than when Apple goes from the 3 to 3GS or 4 to 4S etc.
I also liked and enjoy my GS3 with stock TouchWiz. I thought about getting the 32GB GS4. I would keep it stock and just disable as much garbage as I could. But, I am leaning towards saying screw all the BS and get the Google Edition. Although I would love to use the Multi Screen Feature I would rather get updates straight from Google and not wait for my carrier to push my bug fixes or updates half a year later. So it looks like the GS4 Google Edition is in my future.
Both the htc one and GS4 are great devices. Each has pros and cons. Like all devices.

Dumping S4 after 2 months

Am I the only one that is dumping the S4 in favor of the lag free nexus 4?
ahhhhhh, I can't feel better knowing that I'm going back to the nexus 4 after having to deal with the lag issues that the S4 has.
There is no lag here...try a different rom...on the custom roms...lag is gone...but you are moving along so never mind.

Well, the N4 did just drop $100 so its a good time to change if your going to. But im running the GE 4.3 rom and its absolutely lag free.
Most of my complaints stem from the animation transitions...you can definitely see some type of stuttering. It happens more frequently when the phone dims its lcd brightness.

I just made the switch to T-Mobile and bought the S4. It's still getting delivered lol But the Nexus 4 @ 200 bucks OFF contract is an excellent deal. You can't beat that.
Again maybe it's just me, but I don't have any of the lag that I keep seeing people post about. (knock on wood) Now my OG Note was laggy as all get out. FWIW I don't use the TW launcher I swapped out to Nova after 1 day, but even with TW it didn't lag I just didn't like the look. In my experience having too many widgets seemed to cause lag, especially those that auto update, removing most of them helped somewhat with the Note
I've been tinkering with the idea of the Note 3, but really I don't want to go any bigger. Besides in a few more months something else may catch my eye, thanks to JUMP I can get it if does.

Why dont you just flash a GE or AOSP rom?? I'm sure you're gonna end up flashing an Aosp rom on your nexus anyways...
Like it has been said previously, just flash a Google Edition Rom (it's going to end up just like a Nexus 4): I did it and there's no turning back for me, the phone feels so much faster now... I do sorely miss the TW camera, but I use other features a lot more that depend on speed, plus I need to access some stuff (usually medical stuff) relatively quick, so I couldn't handle the lag.
People who claim lag don't know what they're doing. Please talk about your Nexus 4 on its respected forum.
