[Q] Q. What happened to my storage? SOLVED - Sony Xperia S, Acro S, Ion

I seem to have run into a problem yesterday when flashing a leaked 4.1.2 rom. (on my girlfriend's Xperia S)
I have installed it on a stock .255 as instructed and the installation was completed successfully. I didn't do a full wipe as I wanted to keep all of my previous data. Now the ROM runs absolutely fine on the phone but all data seems to be gone (???).
When I checked the storage on the phone I found that 24gb of data are still being occupied. I installed a file manager and found that all of my previous data along with application data is still present on my phone memory.
After fiddling a bit with the settings and a few ROM flashes later I have managed to put the phone in bootloop and I ended up having to wipe data on the phone with flashtool and I did a clean install of .255 firmware and then flashed the TuRdZzROM.
To my surprise even after going through all of the above the data is still present on my phone's memory. It seems like it is some sort of partition or something that is not being touched by the system. The files can be read and opened through any file manager.
Is there anyone here who understands where the problem lies and how I could fix it?
I attach a couple of screenshots from the filemanager on the phone below.
and here is a full filetree:

The internal memory is highly partitioned. Boot, system, data, cache, TA, and a few other ones, and mainly SD card. That's where your data goes. Unless you format that one, the factory rest won't touch it.

Alright so I have all of this data on the sd card partition... There is a folder called Android in there where all the apps that I have previously had installed (before flashing) have their data stored. Is there any way to "revive" that? (all installed apps have been deleted when flashing )
Also I had some contacts stored in my phone but I can't find them now, would they also be found somewhere on the sd card?

That data stored data isn't the app settings, neither all of that. Mostly cache related files...
About the contact, they aren't stored on the SD card, but on the data partition, under Contacts data. They can be on a vSync file, IF you had a backup made with the Contacts app. If not, they are lost.

Thanks a lot for your help mate
It really confused me how I had most of my storage filled after doing a clean install.

[Q] EXT in wrong place on card

Hi,
When setting up my SD card the first time I put the EXT at the start (rather than at the end which is usually recommended). So far the rom's I've tried have been forgiving and I haven't had any issues because of it, but I'm looking at trying a few more and some state *specifically* that it needs to be at the end.
I've already tried just swapping the partitions around in gparted (I have enough empty space on card to do this with no loss of data) but the phone can no longer see the EXT after this...
I just want to check, if I were to do a titanium backup/sms backup & restore and wipe my card and set it up again from scratch including a fresh ROM flash - I shouldn't have any issues getting apps/settings back right? I presume that a nandroid recovery from before shifting the EXT won't work either :/
Thankyou in advance!
I'm still pretty new to all this but from what I understand you'd have to back up what data you can then repartition your card in the correct order and start again.

I strongly recommend you to use Magic partition manager ( no boot cd needed / no virtual machine needed )
- backup all your sdcard
- format all the sdcard
- create first partition Fat32
- create second partition ext 2/3/4 at the end of the card
( 1Gb max recommended and ext3 would be the best for performance/sdcard life _ written cycles )
You are done _ Hope it helps you

Just to post back, everything worked. Did backup and nandroid and copied anything I needed to pc. Used gparted to wipe old partitions and put them back correctly. Phone couldn't see ext at that point as predicted so just dis a fresh Rom flash and restored apps via mybackup, all went well.

Just 1gb? (I usually prefer 2gb for a lil more space than the phone would have given me)
Anywho yes.
1) Start from scratch by removing all partitions.
2) Choose 1024 for sd-ext
2) Skip for Swap and sd-ext2
3) choose ext4 as the filesystem
When done you can toggle usb storage from the main recovery menu again and copy back your SD card content onto the FAT32 side (it'll probably be the only mount that shows up on your computer anyways unless you're using linux).
Since you're using EliteMod (from the other thread) you can also choose to convert the existing filesystems from ext3 to ext4 by first checking to see which ones need to be converted by taping 'info' on the first screen and see which are ext3.
Then go into tools, and convert backup/etc -> ext4 , and select specifically the ones that need converting (in your case may be data and cache).
After conversion goto tools -> fix user permissions (not 'needed' but generally a good idea after converting a file system).
It would probably be a good idea to goto wipe|format and clear cache+dalvik before booting back into the rom (it'll see the sd-ext partition and start moving stuff automatically).
If it's all working and such, be sure to go back into recovery and make a backup.
PS: The paid version of 4EXT will let you configure the recovery further from the app, such as telling it not to backup dalvik-cache or cache when backing up (instead they will be formatted upon restore), as well as some other options like hide non-FAT32 partitions from the PC when mounting USB storage in recovery.

I followed your steps ... i wiped cache and dalvik and i flashed dataswap 64 mb and now i turned on phone and there is statement ANDROID IS UPRGADING ..starting applications ..and its loading and loading whats wrong ?
Wiping dalvik cache clears some application related data which is created when the app is installed. Doing this can sometimes resolve some issues.

Nothing is wrong, normal behavior after wiping the dalvik cache, it'll go thru and optimize all your applications and won't show that dialog again until either you wipe the dalvik cache again or a new application is installed without the automatic optimization. You should have seen a # or # incrementing as it was doing it (i.e.: in my case # of 155 applications).

Backup your lost file after updating to 4.3 or 4.2.2

It is recommened to format your internal SD card when you upgrade to 4.3 because you will get problems like force closed etc.
Once you backup your 'lost' files (which you should have done before upgrading), you should reboot into recovery and do a full wipe, then go to mounts and storage and format internal sdcard, then flash the ROM again.
That is the best way to ensure you have no problems in 4.3

Hi,
I have the same problem with my Galaxy S4 SGH i337M, 4.3 update wiped my entire internal storage.
I followed your steps with Root Explorer ($3.99 in playstore), but my data/media folder only contains: /0, /legacy, /obb folders...and none of my pre-update stuff....
Also, my total storage visible when connected to PC is 9.7GB out of 16 GB on the phone, so there is 6.3GB of hidden data buried somewhere in the phone, which is roughly the amount of data I had before the update...
Would you or anyone else have any ideas on how to locate it?
Please help!

Insufficient space for new and updating apps

I get a insufficient space error when installing new apps or updating existing ones. I bought the phone pre-rooted and running Project X v3.6 from here on XDA. This is my first smart phone, so I'm noob. I don't like the lack of control over data storage. Listed below is the storage breakdown. As you can see, I have space across the board and I cant install the 35MB Inbox by google app. Maybe there's a way to change the size of the partitions? 2GB for apps seems weak to me.
Avail space according to storage in settings:
Device storage - 2GB, 250MB free
USB storage - 11.5GB, 2.9GB free
SD card (for music) - 3.7GB total, 500MB free
I also have a bunch of apps that need updating, but cant.

"wiping cache" --> What cache? Of each app? I'll clear Dropbox app cache and then try to update it, but still says not enough space.
I cleared delvik cache, rebooted, and it showed updating android screen.
Neither fixed it. Still cant update or install new apps. Then available space is still the same as described in the OP.

OK, I cleared cache and no fix. My email app now crashes because of android claiming there is no space. Is there a way to partition the internal SD to allow more space?

You can partition an external SD to be read as the data/app folder, most recoveries have the option. Back everything up first though as it will wipe the SD before it partitions it.

I have AGAT_Recovery tREC_v0.3.5 for recovery.
I have two options:
partition sdcard
partition internal sdcard
If I scroll down and choose partition internal sdcard, error shows: "Can't partition device: external_sd" (yes it says external sd when I select internal sdcard)
However, if I scroll up to it, it does not show an error and lets me proceed. Nice bug... My question is should I select and partition the internal sd, or will that destroy the OS?
I've never done the internal SD

Low storage

Hi Guys,
My phone was rooted, so I relocked my bootloader and flashed the RUU.
This brought me back to the original start of my phone so I was able to install the lollipop OTA.
Now, i've lollipop on my phone, configured everything etc, but my storage is on 7.7 out of 8gb.
I've added some screenshots , can somebody tell me how to get more free internal storage? On KitKat , the storage space was half as full as it is now.... (with the same apps installed)
I've tried to do a cleanup of internal storage, i've cleaned the phone with CCleaner and CleanMaster, nothing helps.
Thanks in advance!
7.7 out of 8GB :

Here is shows the files on the internal storage are only 300kb :
I had the same issue as well, even clearing and uninstalling many apps. But I did a fresh complete factory reset, restore all my apps and im back on business

Yeah I wasn't able to install any apps too
I did do a reset before configuring my phone, after the Lollipop OTA was installed, but I did it in settings > backup and reset.
I just did a reset from the bootloader, it's configuring my phone now. Fingers crossed.

Yup that will work. I did the same as well. Cleared many of my internal memory. Just a quick tips, try to uninstall updates on Google apps that you dont use at all. Like me I dont use much Play music and also HTC Zoe and Kid mode. So I uninstall the updates and also disabled them so that it will not prompt me to update it
So, I did the reset, disabled a LOT of apps, removed updates etc, and it's now on 6.9 out of 8 GB.
I would really like to know what the more than 4GB "other" storage is.....
I had like 3,5 out of 8GB free in KitKat.. This is really a pain
There is extra bloatware bundled with the Lollipop ota. I'm in a similar situation with my phone. I recommend moving data from non-essential apps to your sd card. I did this with games and some other apps I can do without if I remove the SD card.

My friend has the same problem with his HTC Desire 816. More than half of his internal memory (4gb+) is locked in the "Other" part of the storage. What exactly does this "other" storage carry? How can we release the memory from "Other"?

Use Link2SD to move parts of apps to SD card. I tried removing system apps, but I had problems with stability.
I had the exact same issue as you have and the only real fix is to either limit your downloaded apps significantly or gain root access by setting up a developers account at HTC. DEV and unlocking your bootloader then flashing TWRP custom recovery through ADB fastboot then flashing the superSU zip file from your internal SD card using TWRP recoverys file manager to gain root access . Even then HTC locks the nand storage on their phones so you will have to gain S off using either sophisticated development tools or pay $25 and use the Sunshine app and have that do it for you. Then you can buy the pro version of link2SD from the play store and partition 10% to 20% of your external SD card in ext2 format primary storage and format the rest to FAT32 primary storage using a SD formatting utility like Easeus partition manager on your computer. Then create mount scripts from within the link2SD app then reboot and your low storage problem will be a thing of the past. I did it and so can you. Just do it one step at a time but that's the only real way to increase your storage internally on this phone.
