hey there guys and girls,
This is my first post and was just wondering about my xperia plays touchscreen. I bought it almost a year ago and since i got it the problem has been occuring. Its not major dont get me wrong but it can be really annoying when i am texting my frineds. What happens is that i will press a letter then it will just decide to press a bunch if other letters next to them. Also the keyboard will randomly go down so ill end up clicking send and completely wasting a text.
Any help would be great... Thanks xD
Large fingers? lets hope its not a digitizer problem but you did state its been happening since you got the phone. the xperia play does seem to me to be more sensitive to the amount of pressure needed or not needed; or is it just me?
Got used to using swype keyboard on my sgs and haven't used the stock keyboard on the play.
you could try to clear data for the keyboard Settings>Applications>Manage Applications>All>"keyboard"
maybe another keyboard will solve your problem entirely, there are plenty of them on the market/store.
this is just one as there are many
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...xLDEsImNvbS52bGx3cC5pbnB1dG1ldGhvZC5sYXRpbiJd
edit: forgot to mention, if you install this or any other input method you will first need to enable it in Settings>Language & keyboard>"keyboard"
just tick the box next to the keyboard and it will give you a prompt; read>OK
then say in messaging just press and hold on the text input field and select input method>select keyboard you want to use
also, when your keyboard disappears for whatever reason or doesn't show when needed you can press and hold the menu button for a few seconds to bring your keyboard up or make it go away.
I pulled off the screen protector and that seemed to fix it for me.
i've been having the exact same problem, it seems to occur mostly when my phone is charging or when it's too warm. Didn't bother sending it back though, but yes, it can be verry annoying when trying to text
Don't worry, its a standard Sony Ericsson issue. Usually occurs when the device overheats.
Reboot or look into ROM flashing and the problem will be resolved

Mine does that when there's moisture on the screen, or when plugged into the charger. I've found typing to be much less annoying in wet conditions when using Swype.
Dry off your screen often enough and it should help. Removing the anti-shatter film (which is next to useless anyway) also makes a difference.

Welcome to XDA!
Try solutions posted above.
If You ever need to test any piece of hardware on your phone, try accesing serice menu by typing this code in Dialler:
*#*#7378423#*#*
From there You can access Service tests menu and test Your Touch Screen/Earphone/Display just to mention a few.
Also screen protector isn't any good for me, standard keyboard is too small and stock firmware is to laggy to type messages. Solution is easy if You are ready to give your phone a boost by flashing it as mentioned by someone else above.
Wow, there is a great amount of different anwsers
I remember that someone on these forums said that Xplay has problems with multitouch regonizing (or something)
Basicly, the touch points wont reset unless you do something (i dont remember what)
Personaly, i just press powerbutto to "shut down" my screen, press main menu butto and open the lock, its all back to normal
EDIT: wait few seconds (like 5 or so) before you reopen the screen
i'm having a similiar problem, i charged my phone with 5v a couple times, so the last week, the touchscreen doesn't work. sometimes it does, it has been abit tricky. it like works sometimes, with an effort of constantly mashing the screen (with swipes and presses), but the last 24 hours, it's been practically dead. every other part of the phone works, like LED, pad controls, speaker, etc etc, just touchscreen is dead... any solution, methods?

Honestly, I have no idea. I just know that the digitizer is what makes the touch screen work, and that there have been xda users buying them for replacement parts before.

I have been getting this problem when coming in from outside. I can hold my finger about 1cm above the touchscreen and it will type random letters as well. Seems to be affected worse in bottom left hand corner for me. It settles back down after a while of being indoors. Its really weird though.

That's because the difference in temperature and humidity causes condensation to gather on the screen, temporarily. Capacitive touch screens work by conducting electricity, and moisture is conductive.

Ahh, I see. That makes sense. I took the factory installed screen protector today as well. I'm hoping this will help too.

My power button is getting weaker and weaker, I have to press in the middle and pretty hard for it to work. Even then sometimes it doesn't work.
Is it possible to replace the whole button and the circuits part itself? If so where can I find such parts?
Thanks!
While I haven't done it myself I believe it's possible, and fairly easy. Here is a video tutorial on disassembling the phone https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6sD6LRfJHSk&feature=youtube_gdata_player
As far as parts I've had pretty good luck finding parts for other phones off of ebay. Just an fyi, you're probably going to have to do a bit of soldering.

Hi fellow PLAY owners, I'm having trouble with my screen. I can turn my phone off no problem, but when it comes to waking it up, either by pressing the power button or the home button, my screen won't turn on. I can slide it open, and i hear stuff going on as if my screen were on, but I can't see anything. It'll be like that for random amounts of time, like 1 minute, or as long as 5 minutes or more. Any ideas? THANks
That's the flexible cable problem...

the digitizer lets the software know where you pressed on the screen, the ribbon connects the screen and digitizer to the main board of phone
So which one would it be if even pressing the power button, which is a harware button, doesn't respond?
Can anyone help me by giving me the part number I should order? I'm checking eBay but there's at least two options for the same named part... Thanks guys!

mine has the same problem but i think there's only a dead spot. For example, the numpad place for 4, 5 and 6. Is there any way to solve this other than taking it to a technician? Problem appears at random times also. Thanks in advance!

I think this is a different issue. My entire screen won't turn on even though the phone itself is on.
By the way, my problem has gotten worse. Now it will only turn on (by chance) after I have slid out the gamepad. Grr..

As far as I know there is no under or overclocking going on. Not unless my ROM does it without me knowing it (Gin2Ics).
Anybody know the name for the flex cable part? Or the part number? Thanks/:cyclops:
So I bought this screen digitizer thinking that it was the problem... and it took forever to get delivered! anyways, I replaced the digitizer and am having the same problem.... :/ and after I changed the digitizer I noticed that the flex cable is actually ripped!! so now I purchased it from here and I'll keep u updated.
Hey thanks so much man. Hope it gets fixed. I want to know how it works for you so maybe I might do the same. It finally died out on me and screen won't turn on at all...
That's exactly what happened to me!
soo.. it finally worked after I changed the flex cable

That's cool man. Congratulations. I, unfortunately, didn't have the same luck. My phone is out for the count. I now have the sad news of no longer being an Xperia PLAY owner. Sad face.
I'll leave this question opened though, for others who might profit from it! :highfive:
hi im having a problem with my desire z keyboard. some keys such as O, P and S are not working well. like i have to press them really hard to bring the letter on the screen. the hardware touch is fine like the keys feel normal when i press them but with some 4 5 keys, the letter doesnt come up unless i press really hard. anyone else having such a problem and solutionss?
I am having the same problem, but I've kinda got used to the on-screen keyboard anyways.
Same problem here, and for another 3 people on Polish forum said about this too. I have send my DZ on warranty - waiting for answer. I have rooted ulocked and changed rom so I am curious about what they will say :> Depending on how much people have this problem it's a hidden defect for DZ not caused by user.
I have problems with my "a,s,d, and spacebar". Too bad that my Desire Z's warranty is already expired. Agree with the other poster, best way around it is to get use to the touch screen keyboard.

My DZ keyboard had been working perfect until recently.
The 'i' key and space key need to be pressed hard to register. But for the i key, sometimes if I press it hard enough, it will register twice. I think it is related to dirt/dust getting into the key or aging issue. And since my DZ is nearly two years old, I am not complaining. Anyone tried to take their phone apart and clean or replace the keyboard?
As i said before, I have send my phone to HTC Service with this problem and yesterday I got it back.
My phone was rooted and "htcdev unlocked" with Virtuous Sense ROM on board when I sended it and... there was no problem with it . They replaced "FPC Pre-Assy Qwerty" and didn't even restore orginal OS. Keyboard is working perfect.
Im having problems with my . button, no more warranty, so i guess i just have to live with it...
Have you attempted to shift to a different ROM? I had encountered certain hindrances akin to this whilst utilizing certain beta ROMs. Upgrading the ROM had solved this. Alternatively, it may be a hardware malfunction.
have the same problem as yashif,o,p,i,u need to press harder sometimes it register the key twice is it a hardware problem?

Sounds like dirty contacts in the keys. the proper way to fix this is to carefully disassemble and clean the keyboard parts with some diluted isopropyl alcohol.
The _improper_, _unsafe_ _lazy_ method that does not require disassembly but is probably a stupid thing to so (but I've done with success on another phone, not a Desire Z), is to remove the battery, spray a bunch of DILUTED rubbing alcohol onto the keyboard, saturating it so that it runs into the nooks and crannies, then repeatedly press the buttons up and down -- with the idea that some alcohol gets into the contacts and cleans them. Let the phone dry completely for 24 hours, put the battery back in and hope it turns on, then hope the keyboard works again.
Let me stress that I would only do this with a phone that is past warranty and that you wouldn't mine if it never works again...
Hey guys.
Late response but I happened across this thread when I was having this problem for a few days. I slowly realized after reinstalling my ROM with no joy, that I'd actually experienced this problem before, back when I'd taken the phone apart to replace the screen. Back then it turned out i'd left the keyboard ribbon cable loose which was causing some of the keys not to work.
Well it appears this time I may have knocked the cable out of place after dropping the phone (I do that alot) as after opening the phone, taking the cable out and then simply popping it back in, my ketyboard was back in working order!
If anyone is unsure about opening up the phone and trying, it's simply the first 3 minutes of the below video, upto removing the ribbon cable (just take it out and pop it back in, easy!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0LJnqTlBVQ
Good luck!
DONT spray a bunch of DILUTED rubbing alcohol onto the keyboard
sorry for digging old threads but i had this problem and i thought someone will have it in the future
PLEASE DONT DO THIS:
-The _improper_, _unsafe_ _lazy_ method that does not require disassembly but is probably a stupid thing to so (but I've done with success on -another phone, not a Desire Z), is to remove the battery, spray a bunch of DILUTED rubbing alcohol onto the keyboard, saturating it so that it runs -into the nooks and crannies, then repeatedly press the buttons up and down -- with the idea that some alcohol gets into the contacts and cleans -them. The phone is too well made it has 3 layers until u get to the contacts
and is 95% probable you hard brick your phone
Dust CANT get to the contacts, instead the problem comes from the metal part touching the contacts that is bent overtime.
these things look like a ( and when they are pressed they go like this | and in the middle of them you will see
i will make a full tutorial how to repair bad contacts on this
Aaand.. here it is
well, i' have installed roms for a while and everything is ok, but in last days my phone sometimes stop responding, the screen doesn't turn on pushing the power button, but the funny is that apparently the phone still working, how do I know? if i have patience after a moment maybe 10 mins or in other cases is delayed 1 day the screen shows up in the last part where it was.
Now when I don't have patience and i pull off the battery and try to turn on the phone, the phone apparently turn on, vibrate, and then show the blue light and thats all , the phone still has keep in the black screen and I have to pull off the battery and repeat the process until the phone wants turn on
please help me this problem is really stressful
and a extra information..
2 or 3 months ago my phone fell down in a pool
maybe the problem is the battery? any help is valuable for me
So I can tell you 90% your Xperia Play suffers from a disease called "the flex cable damaged" disease. Your phone will have to undergo a surgery which will replace the damaged flex cable with a new one. Flex cable is the cable which connects the motherboard to the screen. Common issue for Xperia Play. Revert to stock, and I mean completely stock, then send to Sony Centre and replace for free if you still have warranty.
woww that was fast, unfortunately I have no warranty, my cousin throw me at the pool so i think he can pay me the flex cable... do you know how much is it?
by the way........rhank you sooooooo much
Er I am not sure about the price cause I got mine fixed under warranty. But I think it's not really expensive
So a tip for us is that open the slider slowly to avoid damage to the flex cable right?

Yep. Some people always push up hard (I am one of them ) then my flex cable is damaged.
I don't think it has anything to do with how hard you're using the device.
It has to do with how it was installed from the factory.
sometimes the cable can get bunched up underneath the screen and get a crimp in it.
My other spare screen slider cord has been crimped and i don't know how much longer it will last
but my other one is totally fine.
Guys I had problems too with my XP. One day the screen became all glitchy than i changed my flex cable and now the Device goes on when I push the on/off button the device thrills but no screen.
Any solution for this all ready flashed stock .TFT file.
