I live in a "dead zone" in a valley. The k3 modem works the best but in my basement there is almost no chance for signal. Is there a script that could be written to boost my signal strength wen necessary? In an ideal world with a toggle. I'm usually charging in this area so battery isn't a concern. I need to study tasker or similar I think for that type of option. Forgive me if that is the wrong idea. I use KT kernel and don't understand all of ktweaker settings and there is so many. I don't know if one will control this option. Ive seen threads about antenna and hardware to install I just didn't know if more power directed toward signal would help. Thanks for any input.

hmmm.. not sure about codes that can boost strength. If there is, please sticky this.. haha
I live in a dead zone as well. There are a few solutions (costing lots of course)
You can look into a device called zboost. Google it and see if its right for you or not.
Hope this helps!

Signal isn't fixed by code. Its fixed by your provider putting up more towers. Only thing you can fix is the signal picture to make it show more bars when you actually have little to no picture. But that would just be a false read and you would still have no signal.
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda premium
Cell phones are optimized based on how much "power" they can utilize to search for a signal, and how much they should be use after a lock and sustained signal has been established. The more the power phone uses, the more hotter it would become, and the more radiation it would emit.
This is what you see as SAR rating on your phone.
The max power used is normally limited at hardware level too (to the best of my knowledge).
Just giving my 2 cents here
Thanks guys. I was hopeful. Att is the ONLY carrier that will even kinda work. Not like I like I live in the boonies either. Maybe they will add a tower someday. Thanks again.
I had to purchase a 5W booster to fix my issues (my provider paid for it or else i could cancel my contract)

Hello.
So, I'm coming from a rooted HTC Hero on Sprint. I had Cyanogen's 2.2 running nicely, and was ready for an upgrade.
Sprint dinged me on the anniversary upgrade options, so I decided to jump to big red and go for the Dinc.
Very glad I did, and I rooted immediately, loading up Virtuous 2.7 and a new kernel (King's no.4)
Thing is, I'm really suffering.
My reception as home and all over my neighborhood is appalling. Dropped call after dropped call. 3G to 1X to 3G to 1X...etc.etc.
My battery life is really killing me. I've got SetCpu to 245Mhz screen off, syncing as little as I can throughout the day, but I'm still down 29% in 2 hours !!
It kills me to say, but as I'm still within my 30 days, I'm really having to ask myself is it worth it ?
I can't for the life of me think what I can do to make the battery life better, apart from buying one of thhose big ass batteries.
And as for the signal, Verizon recommend I change the phone. Could it really be something to do with the phone ? Surely it's software (radio) related, and as I'm on the official 2.15.00.07.28 would changing the phone even do anything ?
First sink try in set CPU pressing menu then select the second option, not device select. If that doesn't work try switching kernels. If that doesn't work do a double wipe, dalvic wipe, and battery stats wipe then reinstall the rom then the kernel.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
you also have to understand that the stock battery is only 1300 mah!
I bought the OEM 1500 mah (fits in original case!) and it's practically a normal phone now. also, try a different kernel if not the powersaving kernel that came with virtuous 2.7
i have had good results with hydras kernel as well.
keep your setcpu profiles to a minimum if not uninstall the app. i recommend trying out the kernels before using setcpu to see how it does first.

That sucks, and will kill your battery in the way you describe.
I'm assuming that you've tried *228 Option 2 to update PRLs recently? You can also try the 2.15.00.09.01 Radio and see if it helps, but I don't expect that it will.

It doesn't matter what you do in software if the hardware is bum. It's entirely possible that you have a bad phone, and I'd take up Verizon's offer to exchange it if they think you should be getting better signal than you are.
If you're really interested in any further tests with this phone, wipe and RUU back to stock, and don't install and 3rd party apps. See what your signal and battery life look like. If they're still terrible, either something's wrong with your phone or you live in a lead box or Faraday cage.
verizon
I love my incredible and verizon, but all that goes out the window when service is not there. I would try stock kernel for sure and if that doesn't work i would unroot and then call verizon and what they are willing to do. radios, kernels, roms make any difference if you are in a dead spot. I'm sure they want to keep you as a customer see what they say, and if you don't like the answer hello EVO!
dB readings?
Can you see what the dB readings are in the the settings menu? Mine sit around -105 at my house, which is borderline no signal but I still complete and maintain calls just fine. I'm wondering if yours is the radio, or if there is something software-related that's causing the crazy signal drops.
BTW, the Incredible, in my estimation, does have relatively weak signal compared to some other phones I've owned (Env3, Eris).

It's strange.
I've unrooted and gone back to stock.
I also made a trip out to Manhattan today, and my signal was strong pretty much everywhere.
However, walking my neighborhood, it fluctuates between -62 and -80 (where it is currently at my home)
Thing is, I get constant call drops, even at -73.
The other odd thing is that I've seen the bars go from 1 bar at -72 to 4 bars at -61 and then down to 1 bar at -78 to 2 bars at -78. There doesn't seem to be aby consistency at all. I'm wondering if they've got the same problem as Apple where there formula for displaying signal is just wrong.
My other issue is with the data signal going form 3G to 1X around my area. I spoke to Verizon who told me that (in their words) they "Own" my area, and signal should be strong. I disagree, and I regularly go down to 1X walking from my house to my coffee shop, all of 5 blocks away. If they "owned" my area, then surely I should be lit up all the way there....
I may just take up their offer of an exchange of phone, just to be sure, but now seeing my signal in Manhattan, I'm not so sure. I think they have a bad area where I live, and they need to address it.
I love this frickin' phone. It's amazing. I don't see the need for me to change this over the next couple of years, it's that good.
One last point. I have also noted that my GPS is, to put no finer point on it, ****ing dreadful.
Sitting where I am now, it's telling me I live in the middle of the East River.
I've noticed when I'm at work, where I get little to no service, when I pull up a web page, or anything else that pushes for data, I get a slight to moderate boost in signal while said tasks are being executed. My problem is that I also get very little service inside my house, but I always have it on the charger close to a window - which does help some. Now from what I've read and understand the battery can actually be pushed to increase signal up to a significant amount, as I've noticed at work, and even while using GPS in what are usually dead zones for me. Now I'm not too keen on how it all works, so I figured I would ask anyways... So finally here's my question - Since I always have my phone on the charger at home, I'm not worried about draining the battery. So shouldn't there be a way for an app to push the battery constantly to boost the signal while the phone is charging? Sorry if this is a clearly dumb idea, I'm sure there's a reason it won't work, but I thought I would throw it out there.
No idea what the duck u r thinking

Just an idea based on observations I've made over the years. Figured I'd get a more elaborate response than that. Like I said, I don't know much about how the antenna works, but I was hoping to find a reason why this wouldn't work.
Technically it's not possible.
Let's keep in mind that FCC has regulations on the maximum output power for each class of devices such as a cellular phone.
Also sometimes a voice communication signal (1xRTT) is not always same level as data signal (EvDO) at the same physical location due to many factors. Also we are not sure when the signal indicator bars are displayed, which signal it's displaying at which moment. That could explain the boost you saw on your phone.
Just keep in mind, a software is not able to modify a phone's signal.
Much better, that makes sense. Thanks man!
Have you tried a signal booster antenna sticker?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Elgx7lp7YMc
You can get them on ebay for about $3 for 6 pack. Many people have mixed feelings about these. As for me, I have one in my Evo. I just noticed a gain of one bar only. Still, one bar is better than none.

There is a reason people have mixed results. It's the placebo effect. There is no reason that covering your phone in metal would help.
Theres a thread on here somewhere about the air rave(sp?), I think it was in general. Guys with bad service at home were calling sprint, and getting one for free. It uses wifi to boost your cell signal.
I remember seeing a thread to tweak the 4G settings to lower the minimum signal strength the phone will connect to. I thought it was in the Android development forum, but I haven't had much luck finding it. If someone could provide a link, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks. Added it to my subscriptions. I sit in a cube, with a charger at my desk. No worries . I have low signal strength with 4G (only the 4G icon is lit, none of the arcs), and I can get it sometimes, and other times, it just cuts out. I'd like it to cut out less.
I cant understand why a 200 dollar phone has such horrible signal strength. I have stock rom gb ( i am rooted though) running on my incredible 2, and my db level is always between -90 to -102 showing 1 bar or none while my wifes droid x shows -72db to -70 at all times all over our house and everywhere we go. It gets even worse when I put a silicone case from verizon on it. Is there anything I can do"? I had a thunderbolt that had slightly better signal but this is ridiculous, anyone else experiencing this?
I think if this continues , I might not have a choice but to trade this phone for something else. I would really like to keep this though so any suggestions would really be appreciated thanks
Unless the devices were calibrated on the same equipment, you can't rely on the accuracy of their signal strength measurements.
Are you having any REAL problems or do you just not like what your phone displays and perceive a problem? Mine shows between -80 and -100 usually and I get great call and data performance out of it.
Try going into settings-calls-then network. I changed from global to cdma and it seemed to help. Ymmv

Try a different back cover. The antenna is in that. May have a bad cover. Mine came with two and one of them gave me better signal than the other. Take it to verizon, they should switch it out for free. Mine gets awesome signal everywere.

Can anyone confirm or have you tried factory reset after GB? On Froyo I had decent/good signal, but after GB it's been horrible. I am steady with 1-2 bars even in areas I used to get full bars and my dBm is around 90-102. My battery has seriously been crap since and I keep hearing and have been told by HTC/Verizon to do a factory reset to fix it but I don't know if I want to. Just curious if anyone has done it.

that is correct. the antenna is in the back cover. try removing the back cover and watch as it loses signal completely. to make things worse though, it seems the antenna is focused at the bottom of the case.. so similiar issue to what the iphone 4 was having.
i wonder if there's small booster antennas you could stick on to the phone somewhere(sure sounds like nonsense but i'd give it a try).

yeah of course they are going to tell you that b.s. just like if you go to the geek squad with a pc problem and they'll say "oh you need to reinstall windows".
i just know if you did a reset it wouldn't fix anything.

Yea, it's the answer to solve anything just like Windows "Reboot the machine" fix.
I don't think I'll do a reset but it'd be nice to know if this will be addressed or if there's a manual fix we can do.

i used to have these 'radiation blocker' stickers i put on my old moto razr. doubt they did anything either but my old job was throwing them away so thought 'why not'.
Mine is horrible as well. Just got the phone 2 weeks ago b4 unl. data went bye bye. My old samsung rogue got amazing reception but this doesnt. I have not dropped a call yet though so maybe the reception bar is just a "dummy" graphic?
No difference from froyo to gb either

This signal bar is definitely conservative. I've set the phone exactly next to my Galaxy Tab, both showing signal strength within 2 db of one another. The DInc2 showed 0 bars while the Galaxy Tab showed 2.
I know the extended battery with back cover gives me better reception then my standard cover. My phone loses signal, drops calls and isnt able to send texts or make calls sometimes while my wifes phone is able to and the wifi has been losing signal as well. On craigslist it goes
very interesting to know that the antenna is on the actual battery cover. i removed my cover and i wasnt able to see it (i assume it is built into the mold?)

What I called junk was not a signal booster. It was a sticker to be placed in the battery compartment purported to boost signal when it does nothing at all. They use to be very expensive ($20-$50) until it was proven they didn't work, then the price dropped ($1-free).
Real signal boosters (pieces of hardware which will actively boost/relay a signal) actually do something to boost signal, and they really work. They also tend to not be cheap.

Different from other electronics, cell phones have become the necessity of every one's daily life. If someone still has no idea of mobile phones, you must say that "Out!" of course except the senior citizens. To be honest, cell phones really bring us lots of benefits. We use it for talking, sending and playing. With it, our life can be modern one, without it, we will be live in the Mars, you know, know nothing about each other. But do cell phones have no disadvantages? Of course not, more and more people are using cell phones at the cost of other interests. Noises are everywhere, especially the one of mobile phones. What should we do, throw them away? It is a stupid behavior. Have you ever heard cell phone signal booster? It is a new kind of device to solve this problem, effective in blocking the signals of your cell phone and its nearby base station. one side, the mobile phone really benefits us a lot, but another side we also benefit from its noises for a long time, so the fight between the cell phone and cell phone jammer has been a hot topic in society now. Which side you stand by, jamming or not, it depends on you.

The optimal modem will be different from person to person based on location. LIF might be best for you, but it might not be as good as LIH(for example) for someone somewhere else.
I personally don't notice enough of a difference to care, I try to download large things on wifi anyways, because it always seems faster than 4g

I can tell you with CQI, RSRP, and RSRQ numbers to back it up that LIx basebands are better than LJ7 for LTE. Why Sprint went with whatever they did in LJ7, while being FAR better than ICS basebands, disappointed me. I know this because I have mapped 63,839 data points in Sensorly in the past month for a realistic LTE coverage map versus Sprint's flat-out lies they show on their own map.
Mutiny,
Do you publish that information anywhere? I'd like to see what you've mapped in KC.

I have been trying a variety of ROMs and Modem. For instance, tried the LJ7 modem yesterday and that just didn't work. I couldn't get a decent data connection on 3G or 4G. Then I went back to the LI3, which I had been using for a while and I had a great 4G connection for a while. Then it dropped out and no matter what I have done thus far I can't get it back, even when I step outside where I can usually get a signal. I mentioned to someone yesterday it's like the Sprint LTE service is operating like a rotating airport light (the green and white lights that I recall from my youth I watched race across the night sky). The beam of service sweeps by and you get it for a flash. I'm really missing the consistency of WiMax on my EVO.
I have been a Sprint customer since late 1997 and to date I can't recall a more frustrating episode with a system roll-out.
I ran across this DSLReports article too and thought it was interesting. http: // goo.gl / ntXCC
Thanks for your post and if you share your research count me among the highly interested.
