REAL competition for the GN2.. - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note II

This phone looks like the real deal...coming next week to ATT..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=moj5lOn2KUk

No stylus, so not really in the same league IMO. Although it does look like a VERY nice phone.
I really like the notification light on it. Pretty cool

This will probably be moved to This Thread.
GN2 still has the better software and the S-Pen. Invaluable now that I'm hooked on using it for work.

Looks cool, but some things look a lil cheaper on the LG. As ^^^^^^^ said no S-pen!! Big factor 4 me.. And one other 1960's edition they added to the phone. Who the hell would b sitting there with an antenna sticking out there smartphone. I bought my daughter a LG, when Windows phone's were popular, and it too had an stupid antenna on it also??
Wtf 4, too listen to the radio
That's what streaming is for!!
I'll stick to my Sammy's
Just my 2¢®

Looks like the reviewer reviewed the Korean version of the LG phone and the International version of the GN2. In Korea they still have over the air TV for cell phones so those models have that wacky antenna.
In the US I suppose we could use the antenna to poke people in the eyes, tamper with crime scenes, and stir our morning coffee...

Pretty nice phone...IMHO
But as mentioned, the gnote is just the better device. And with no pen or multi-window, it would be custom rom city right out of the gate to get it working.
I'd better sit tight with my note 2 for now.....g

well, since lots of folks dont use their S-pen, myself sort of included, I would be fine with a super phone that didnt have one; plus that screen looks lucious...
Obvioiusly, most folks with a GN2 arent interested, but, my wife, still on the GN, might get one of these so I can play with it!
the Dev work on LG is nothing like for Sammy either, but, here again, lots of folks dont root or care about tweaking things, and this will be a nice alternative for them..
I've had good luck with other LG products in my house, so I wouldnt have any problems buying this phone, if I didnt have a GN2..

Omg!!!!! The size of that antenna. Lulzzzzzzzzzzzz

Eeewww it's an LG.
Don't think I could give up on Samsung just yet. Screen is nice though.

Oh yeh....about the antenna....uh......no...LOL...g

as someone else said earlier, that antenna is for TV reception that they get over in Korea...
that would be a real "attention getter" if you whipped that puppy out at Starbucks, and extended the antenna!!
EDIT: Here is a review of the ATT model..

[Q] Question for current Galaxy Note 2 owners..

Thinking of getting a Note 2 here in Dubai, just a quick question for people who have a Note 2 or Note 1.. do you get used to the huge size? How long did it take you to stop thinking "damn, that phone is big!" I've played around with the Note 2 and love the screen but have trouble imagining myself using it everyday, but I'm hoping it could grow on me (pun intended)
I'm coming from the Galaxy Nexus if that helps, anyone else made the same transition?
I used Galaxy S1>Galaxy S2>Galaxy s3 and Now Note 2. 5.5 is not a very huge design. Honestly it fits perfectly in my hand and pocket just like Galaxy s3. I can easily operate it with my 1 hand too and my hands are NORMAL. Even if you have small hands or small pockets, you will get used to it within a couple of days. Grab it man , its just Awesomeeee
Have come from a G2, which is way smaller but haven't found it too hard to switch. Have to use two hands for browsing and stuff but it's worth it for the media experience.
If you use your phone mainly as a phone, the Note isn't for you. If you use it more for Internet and media, go for it. You won't regret.

I too am coming from a GNexus and the GN2, to me, feels better in my hand. This is gonna sound funny but I used the GNexus for about a year and it progressively felt like it was too small. haha! I prefer texting and writing emails with both hands so the GN2 obviously gives me more real estate to make that more comfortable for me.
The problem I have now is deciding what I want to read my books and Flipboard articles with...my N7 or my GN2...
Damn I hate you guys! You just made me order a Note 2 32GB which is arriving tonight Now I have to get my SIM cut quickly!
EDIT: Spoke too soon.. they're "out of stock" on the 32GB, got the 16GB instead+ 64GB MicroSD
It is more of a question of 'how did i ever use something so small?' when you pick up your old phone after using the note for a week.

This!
coming from iPhone 4 it took me all of 1 day.. actually more like 8 hrs or so to start wondering why other phones are so small...
it really surprised me a ton as I was dead set on getting the 2gb s3 lte but changed to note 2 at last second at the store counter ... I was pretty much sure I won't get used to the huge size but subtle changes in dimension from note 1 to 2 made a world's difference in handling...

When I was using my GNexus for months people were asking how I could possibly like using a phone so huge. Most of them are iPhone users minus a few that have seen the light that is Android. I seriously don't know how people can be very productive with anything smaller than 4.7" screen. Blows my mind now

Not long at all. I always wanted a bigger phone, and most importantly - I realized right away that I shouldn't bother trying to use it one handed.

Now that I got the phone, I wholeheartedly agree with every one of your comments
This screen alone is worth the purchase, let alone the beastly specs and monster battery! Thank you all for convincing me.

Too big? Nope nope nope. Got used to it immediately, mainly because it looked soooo much bigger in all the videos i watched.
Once i actually saw the box it came in i was like, wow! Thats perfect. So watch all the videos you can BEFORE and it won't seem too big at all...problem solved : )
I love this phone sooooooo much, it has inspired me to invent a new word: This phone is, "unputdownable.".. get Webster's on the line...lol
Not big. At all.
GNexus feels now like smth way to small.
Only one thing that annoys me, that battery cover is kinda slippery.

Man the GS3 is tiny...

I had no idea how used to the big screen of the Note 2 I had become. I bought my wife the Galaxy S3 for Christmas and was amazed how tiny a 4.8" screen now looks after using the N2 for a month. I can't even imagine using that phone now, much less a miniature IPhone 5. Strange how the mind works.

I feel the same way. Went to install a transfer a couple of files to my girlfriend's S III last night and was surprised at the size difference, even though the Note II doesn't feel all that large to me (it fits in my hands pretty well and I find it much easier to type on).
Definitely agree with this. Went to do something with my old iphone the other day and felt like I was using some strange ancient device. Or maybe more akin to a child's plaything

Isnt it crazy? I went from the i1..3..3g..4..4s then S3 looked huge... to the note 2 that seemed gigundai and now the note 2 seems the norm. Same thing with tvs though... sucks to go backwards but what is worse is when you get use to each they seem the norm so why not jjst stay small?

Because staying small isn't practical for a lot of people, me included. When the iPhone first came out, it was the first mainstream device of its kind, and technology didn't support anything bigger. As time has gone on and technology has grown, we're making larger screens feasible. A big complaint of mine for a long time, was how small various device screens were. But, again, anything larger wasn't practical so you accepted it. I would never want to go back to 3.5" - 4.3". I would cry a million tears if that became the norm. I need the screen real estate for all the games, internet, and video I do on my phone.
This phone ruined every other phone out there for me lol
I went to an ATT store the other day and i couldnt believe how tiny every other phone is.
I agree with everyone. My old phone is a HTC HD2 and when I pick it up to look at it, it looks so tiny. I love the Note 2. I think people who bypass the Note because they see it and are like "that's way to big for a phone" just need to spend a few days or a week with it and I bet they won't go to back to a smaller phone. Also agree with the tv comment. I had a 32" and thought it was perfect size. Then I was looking for a new tv and thought I would get a little bit bigger tv. Was looking at the 52" tv thinking that is way to big. Guess what? Looks completely normal. And when I go to someone's house and am watching something their tv seems so small, even if its in the 40" range. Weird how our mind can change your way thinking and make you into a hypocrite. Ex. Me saying I would never own or want a phone that big as I type this from a phone this big lol.
I think in the near future you will see people with a 7" phone. Don't know if it would go past that but who knows.
My entire gs2 is smaller than the screen alone on this thing. Awesome.
-Easier than it sounds, harder than it looks.-
Wait until next yr, if the rumors are true about the GN3 being 6.3". All of you will be saying the same about the GN2. Lol

Ok folks bring it on.

I want y'all to convince me as to why I should get a note 2. I like to hear from the one's who owned a s3 and went to that note 2 also the one's who skipped the s3 and just went for the note 2. I'm thinking about selling my s3 on eBay for this phone. Just like to know of it's really worth it.
Anyone wants to make a Harlem shake video with me?
Nobody needs to convince you. Go to the sprint store and play with their demo for 15-20 mins, use the stylus the whole time.
You'll get your answer better that way because it IS a sizable size difference to hold and that's the biggest issue I've found so far. But I'm getting use to it darn quickly. ha

very easily, this.
just to reiterate, my 2 cents:
the size was only weird for about 2 days, now it feels mostly normal.
but the battery, the CPU, the screen? all big points to win with.
runs All day with Heavy use (games, chat, SMS/MMS, music, +plus all the other stuff), and some to spare for when i get home
(the only exception to this would be using Nav, but you should be powering your phone when doing that anyway...)
never stutters, never lags, runs every damn thing i throw at it, and sometimes two things at once. aaaaaaa. mazing.
movies/youtube look fan-freaking-tastic on it. pictures look fantastic. games look fantastic. reading feeds/pages/docs/anything at all, fantastic.
again, as far as the size goes?
got in a little tete-a-tete with some iFan on gizmodo about it:
Me said:
every single iPhone user that sees my Note2 wants it. not one exception yet.
even the 2 guys helping me in the Apple store wanted it.
not only do I get the envy of every single iPhone user, I also get the personal satisfaction of knowing my device is hands-down the top of the line in tech specs.

well i came from the s3 to the note 2. at first it felt really big in my hands but after like 2 days i use use my wifes s3 and im like dang this screen is too small lol! anyways pull the trigger you wont regret it. the s pen makes this device better than the s3 by itself but you will notice the faster processor and netflix is really enjoyable on this thing. i was going to get a 7 inch tablet but now i don't need it.

Honestly i jumped on the note 2 as soon as it came out and sometimes do miss my s3. The size isnt an issue bc im 6ft 5 and can hold it with no issue. But the s3 is alot easier to handle with 1 hand. I sold my s3 and got a little over $500 for it bc i had alot of accessories so i only came out of pocket with about $150 for the note 2. If your happy with the s3 you will be happy with the note 2 bc it is very similar. But if you have to come out of pocket with alot of money to make it happen i wouldnt do it. I live in baltimore and theres some people offering $250 and there s3 for a note 2 and im considering jumping on it. Iam in no way sayin the note 2 is a bad phone all im saying is the s3 was and is still a very good phone and to me holds its own against any phone.

No phantom key presses on the N2, but as mentioned earlier..the plastic cover is still there. I'm running MIUI on my N2 right now and it truly kills anything you throw at it. Just a great overall solid phone.
I converted 4 people and they love it btw 2 were iphone lovers
I converted 2 of my partners. 1 got his on Tuesday. The other one is waiting for his tax check and he'll be getting 2 for him and his ol lady. They both had Droid Razrs. My third partner is an Apple fan. He didn't want to look at it. Maybe afraid that it might convert him. Lol
So far I've converted 6 people, 2 from blackberry, 3 from iPhone and 1 from whatever Nokia was using back in the day. I also helped a couple people make their choice when they went to a smartphone for the first time.
I found older folks really like the note 2 for the screen size and the keyboard size.
Converted 2ppl and 1 is waiting to upgrade to this phone so I guess I can say 3.

I put there iphone on top of my phone, show em how much bigger it is. They responded, "bigger isnt always better", i respond, "ask your girl what she thinks about that". Then they complain about how android doesnt have apps, then i show em every damn app they have, and how good the devs made em to fit our screens. Then they say how it cant be perfected because every android phone is different from one another and how apple phones are optimized cause theyre all the same. I tell em another historical figure wanted everything the same type....... His name was hitler... Look what happened to him. They give typical uneducated responses and eventually become quiet. Then i say "this is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back. You take the blue pill, your story ends, you wake up in ur own bed and believe whatever you wanna believe. You take the red pill, and you stay in wonderland, and ill whow you how deep the rabbit hole goes."

3. My other cousin. He had a Samsung infuse 3g. Said the note 2 was too big. One day after a trip to the mall I got something to eat. When I met back up with him an hour later he had the note 2
4. My girlfriends step-mother. She too said it was too big and that she didn't like it. Lo and behold she ended up with a note 2 about 2 weeks later. I asked her why and she said she could see better on a large screen.
What I get from a lot of this is that even though people say they don't want it, deep down they are jealous inside lol

I got that same response from some of my hardcore iphone co-workers. Their iphone was like the savior of the masses... that is, until I showed them how i can have text and browse while watching videos at the same time. That's when I see their jaws drop to the ground.
The other thing that gets ooohs and aaahs is when they stop by my cube and question my nfc tag that I have by the entrance - and I tell them that with a swipe of my phone I can set up all my preferences without fiddling with the settings.
Pic of what it feels like holding those itty bitty phones. I also got a co worker who gave me the it looks your "holding a phone book to your face"..two weeks later she has a note 2. Lol.
Ps I dont see too many note 2 in the wild which I kind of like. ..makes it more a "unique club" but we'll see how long that lasts. Do any of you peps see alot of note 2's around?

Anybody see this? Looks like the Note III will have some competition.

It always had competition. What it shows to me, there are enough people buying Notes that other companies are seeing a market demand that can make enough money to be worth their while.
bigger is better

I had an evo 3d for a long time and loved it, but it was too small. I like the note II, but it could be a bit bigger still. The only problem with htc is that they are so hard to root. The galaxy note took me 15 minutes. The htc evo took the better part of the week to get it just right with the battery pull method.

What competition? Here in the US the only competition was the DNA and that was only on 1 carrier. We never got the Optimus G Pro so it was the Note II or jump carriers. Hopefully with the release of this we will get some other options.

for any and all other phones. I think it's biggest competitor has been the S3. There are also other 5" plus size phones as well. I know LG makes one. I looked at the competition in regards to people's choices.
This HTC is the first one that includes a stylus and more a true head to head competition. Although one could buy a stylus for an Android device. Some even have the hardware to use the Boomboo touch sensitivity stylus. .

I see what you meant now. I was talking more in the terms of "Phablet Competition". Yeah the LG Optimus Vu and Vu II are out but the first one was only on Verizon and I'm not sure the second one even made it to the states. Neither was any competition. Besides the DNA the only real phablet that offered any real competition would be the Optimus G Pro but that hasn't been released in the states either so the Note and Note II has had the stage pretty much by themselves here. Now this T6, if released on multiple carriers, gives Samsung and the Note III something to look over their shoulder at.
I knew what you were thinking. I just saw it different that's all. It was just a matter of what one considers a phablet and what the competition really is. Personally, I've always had the thinking that a phablet was a smartphone is a 5" or larger screen; with new phones, not consider phablets reaching the 5" mark, I may need to redefine it. Yet, Wiki has the same idea as me.
As you have stated though, the number of phablets available has been small. On top of that, they were either specific to one carrier or not available in the US. And importing one was useless for Sprint since they didn't have radios that would work. The issue I had, the hardware--CPU, RAM, storage, etc--tended to be middle of the road to a year behind what I already had, such as the Evo 4G.
Nonetheless, this may be more of a like to like competition. In the end, what I like, it means there has been enough demand and, more importantly, sales of the Galaxy Note to where other companies see there is money to be made. And that just means someone is going to have to step up their game to remain relevant in the phablet market. Hopefully this means we either get better hardware or lower prices. For now, I like Samsung has choosen to make the Note a flagship phone so it gets the best of the hardware. I'm not the biggest of all the software they choose to add. Although, TouchWiz is a solid.
Looks like its getting official:

I feel you. Ever since the Evo 3D I was getting crappy service. Luckily we had WiMax in most of the area and ever since they rolled out LTE my service is great. So it looks Sprint has bought themselves a couple more years. Just hoping we get this one & its not exclusive to just one carrier.
