I have just installed Charging LED for Galaxy Nexus from the Play Store. It works perfectly, no complaints, but I have a doubt.
If the LED of the phone is on constantly for hours, is there a threat of it getting damaged or some other side effects taking place?
I wanna use this app, but I'm a bit scared about the hardware side effects it MAY have.
Kindly enlighten me on this topic.
Thanks.
I don't think so.
i had it on my motorola defy and and now on Gnex and it works fine on both.
i use light flow(the best one for our phone)

I`ll suppose battery life will be the negative side effect.

Well thanks for the suggestion. I don't think Light Flow has the charging light option. The app I have mentioned keeps the LED light on (not just blinking) for all the time the phone is being charged.

Hmmm.. I don't think so, as the LED will be on only when the phone is being charged. Or am I wrong?

Yeah if you are charging then battery life wouldn't be a problem. I have never heard of any negative side effects to using a LED app. Go for it, it will be grand

Yes, even I have never ever had any issues with LED apps, but this one is different. It will be ON constantly, not just blinking. And it will be ON for hours at a stretch, with just makes me a little worried.
Can the color leave a permanent mark, similar to some pixels that sometime get stuck to the screen?

Not sure about permanent mark but here is some info on life expectancy
http://www.electronicsweekly.com/led-luminaries/uncategorized/led-life-expectancy-2009-02/
Well that's good and bad too. Some LEDs may last just a year is what it says, so that's dangerous!

Just so you know light flow has options for low battery, charging battery, and charged battery. You can set it to always stay on instead of blinking also.

LED's don't get stuck on or anything negative if left on for hours. The only downside is LED's are rated for a certain number of hours. Being constantly on will use those hours up significantly faster than just blinking. On the upside, LED's are usually rated for 25,000, 50,000 and even up to 100,000 hours. So even if you charge your phone for 8 hours a day you have quite a few years of use.

I'm wondering if notification lights eat up battery juice.
Would anybody know what the affects are on the battery to have a notification light?
I'm assuming it would be better than waking your phone/screen to check for notifications...
Nothing even measurable. It's kernel handled so there isn't process for it.

You can always just measure the LED hardware itself.
1 blinking LED vs. 1280x720 AMOLED screen. Guess which one uses more power

But the notification LED is physically larger. Won't it use more power?
srsly? I can assure you if you had a Gnex with no LED vs. the one we currently see, you would not be able to tell the difference.
Having been a Palm and Blackberry guy for years and years I always used the LED notifications and I never was able to see any noticeable difference in battery usage between the days I got tons of notifications and Sunday.
And from what I remember from electronics class an LED draws like almost no current at all.

well i haven been noticing this for the past few months.......and wanted to finally post about it....
if u notice the front of the phone near the speaker to the left is a red little light a sensor then the camera....well the thing i have noticed while on CM9/ics roms(cant remember if it was on 2.3 or not) is that red light will come on when just doing normal phone things
now matter what app killer you use it stays on until u reboot...when the light is on the phone will start to run hot and battery drain is awfully quick.....now this only happens really while the red light is on...
now idk if anyone else here has noticed this aswell but if u are running any ics rom and ur phone gets hot and starts to drain quick take a look and see if its on

There is another thread on something very similar it has to do with either to much voltage going to the ir sensor or a faulty sensor. However this doesn't seem to be a wide spread issue

Hi all I have just bought the new nexus 7 and I love it. One problem is I have never seen the notification light work yet. I have checked in settings and it's ticked.. When does it flash? Is it every time you get a notification from eg Facebook etc,? I'm worried it's not working.
The light is usually associated with notifications, yes. Usually this is configurable in the apps responsible for the notifications.
I thought the same when I got mine but it was flashing during a notification a while back so at least it works but rare.

Mine triggers on e-mails, so I see it a lot!
Does work thanks sent myself an Email
I use LightFlow and configured the light to fade in and out with almost no period of time where the light is off. It looks as if the light is "breathing", and is much more noticeable than the 10 second delay between flashes that the stock light is. Give it a shot.
So far, I've only seen it light with email. General notifications don't seem to trigger it.
My first Nexus 7 (2013) had a completely broken notification light. No matter what I did, I couldn't get it to light up. (I ran testing programs, Light Flow, sent myself emails, etc). Exchanged it at Best Buy and the new one worked immediately. So just know that there are some defective notification LEDs out there.
There's a whole slew of less common issues that IMO if it bothers you, you should get an exchange, but if not, just live with it.
LED doesn't work
NFC doesn't work
Bluetooth doesn't work
Qi wireless charging doesn't work
dust under screen
light bleed
offwhite screens
dead/stuck pixels
mushy Power/Volume buttons
creaky edges
back cover comes off easily
screen separating from tablet
battery charger not recognized even though it is charging
microphone doesn't work
one speaker has no sound
charger makes buzzing noise
camera blurry
--
spasdic multi-touch
touchscreen dead-spots
camera crashes tablet
hardware related random reboots (not the same as software-related reboots)
--
The last 4 can sometimes be mitigated in software so try fixes first.
Many of these issues are rare. Some are more common. I think a lot of people don't even notice or just live with it because it really doesn't bother them that much or they don't even use the feature.

Hmm...it sounds like my LED light took a dump on me then. I've had my Nexus 7 2013 for about a month. It used to notify me for emails...now nothing. And yes it does bother me.

I recently got the m8, and after a few days of installing apps and learning its nuisances, i finally put it down for an extended time lol. but now that that has happened, ive noticed that whenever I get a notification, the light will not stop flashing until i clear it. its been flashing for an hour straight now from an email i sent myself. is this normal?
I dont have light flow installed by the way.
Maybe you have custom rom with that ability? I would like to have that option, but I had to install Light Flow...

Nope, I'm fully stock. Not rooted or anything. I guess I would consider this bug useful, but it makes me paranoid that it will cause excessive battery drainage or cause LED problems in the future.

This is normal. I assume the expectation by HTC is that you use your phone often enough, that you will just check the notifications in a timely manner. Or on the other hand, if you don't turn the screen on for an extended time, you will want to be notified there was a message, call, etc.
I doubt this would have much impact on battery drain. LEDs are low power consumption for such a small LED as this. And leaving it blinking is not going to cause the LED to fail anytime soon. LEDs have a life expectancy of 25,000 hours or more (possibly up to 100,000 hours). Even if constantly lit, this equates to years or even decades of life. Most LEDs manufactured in the 70s and 80s are still working today.

Thank you for the very informative reply. Gives me a little peace of mind. I'm sure that there's something wrong with my phone though because when I disable the led notifications in the settings for all apps, it still blinks when I get one. Might have to try a factory reset.
This is a pain. I have no apps installed. I have always on display turned off but when I charge the phone and the screen is off you get battery level and gone to full on the button. There is no easy to turn this off. I have tried everything. Thus week cash's screen burn in. It never goes off even when battery is full.
I have attached a screen shot. Any ideas? I'd blogging edgar Samsung needs to fix this asap or the phone goes back. S10 didn't do this.
Damn no way to post a screen shot.

I was looking in Samsung members and there's a couple threads about it and somebody from I guess Samsung said to use Good Lock (which doesn't fix the issue currently) but maybe they will update it so it does.
Ccswe pro app. Disable always on display gets rid of the charging status being on all the time when connected to charger/wireless charger.Etc.worked for me.

yeah this, still don't get why people are worried about burn in from AOD. It moves around quite a bit even the human eye can tell
My main concern is the brightness, it's brighter than the note 9 charging led at night.
A potential fix

I tried really very hard to see the text moving but just couldn't. I personally believe it doesn't.
Even if it does, it covers a very small area, unlike the AOD clock.. Have you seen the green icon at the bottom when the battery
is full? That's going to be the biggest burner of all..
I think we should all call Samsung 10 times bumbarding them with incident tickets on this issue.
A potential fix
After disabling AOD using package disabler, can someone try installing an older AOD version? That version I belive will not have this stupid feature.

It dimmed down after few minutes
The reason it's there is because there is no longer an LED to show charging status. Not saying it's a good idea, just saying why it's there.
I agree with others that there is a concern of burn in. If it just shifts around by a couple pixels, it will still burn in. To prevent burn in. It would need to move around the screen. Like from top to bottom and side to side.
One work around is to take off the charger as soon as it hits 100, but I like to use my phone until I go to bed then put it on the charger. And even then, is an hour a day everyday showing the same constant image enough to cause burn in?

Many thanks for your note, just one small question, Does S10+ have battery charging indicator that stays on all the time when plugged in ? It's that notification at the bottom of the screen that shows even when the AOD is off.
I have read forums that said S10 Did not have it ?
Please reply..
Thanks.

Just one last question, do you charge your phone overnight ? Mine sits on wireless charging overnight for good 8 hrs everyday and shows the battery full icon also which is green in color. So the indicator stay on the screen for about 7 hrs each day.

I have both phones.
The S10+ does not have the same charger indicator as the Note 10+.
Currently the only way to turn it off is to disable AOD completely with a package disabler, unless something has been found over the past few hours that I'm not aware of.

I was looking for it and just saw this video, which does show the charging indicator all the time. See here for S10 SE, would appreciate your comments.
