Hey everyone,
My battery life is at 65% with only 3H "on battery" time.
The screen has used up 52% of my battery life -_-
It's on Automatic settings...
Any advice.. this is a HUGE battery drain.. should i turn off Automatic and just set it to something lower?

Received my s4 last night. Fully charged over night. been using it for all morning adding apps over 4g, spotify, screen display, etc
5h/1m on battery with screen on alot etc, and 66% still

Damn! That looks impressive. Are you using the i9500 or the i9505? Also, what did you have enabled/disabled and how heavy were you using your device? It looks like you could last an entire 24 hours on one charge.
if someone can tell me the button combo to take a screenshot ill upload mine
I was shocked my battery lasted all day with wifi and bluetooth on. Something must be wrong with your unit. I am just now charging it - 14 hours later after HEAVY use of texting and internet all day today. I even use the face recognition to unlock the screen.

To cure your problem. ....
New device for first time comes to life doesn't have calibration set by OP system. .....
So first charge your phone to full and go beyond warning to charge and go down to 3-4 % remaining charge then plug to charge and charge without stopping to 100%
And do 2-3 times like this then your battery discharge will show properly
Also good habits are to use .....
Hold home button for 2-3 second and open little bottom screen click on bottom left and choose ram.....then clear ram....any time you going to idle and each time you going to charge. .....to find more about what this do search XDA .....
Also there is many hungry apps on market that runs under ground all the time. ....so learn and discover how to take control of your phone and make it run like champion
#2 you can use ES task manager to do some fine tuning to get the most juice of your battery
#3 Better battery stats
#4 Battery booster
#5 Juice defender. .....are some alternative to top of the iceberg on your solution. ....or you can take time and learn to do all this by yourself manually

Is everyone who posted on LTE or just hspa+, 2g etc?
I notice a big improvement ( like another person mentioned in another thread) when lte is off. My speedtest results between lte and hspa were the same download speeds but lte had better upload by two megabit.
battery life for me is great, then again im coming from an htc amaze lol. That battery suuuucked.
update
I did a few more tests w speed test.net and noticed that when on HSPA plus and not on LTE I actually get faster download speeds. On LTE it was 8 to 10 megabits the last 24 hours and now HSPA plus I'm getting 18 to 21 megabit down. Anyone know why this might be?
P.s. live in Manhattan NyC.

the representative told me LTE was in New York City but as we know they know nothing... its still weird that when the phone is set to LTE auto he gets slower speeds than one connected on HSPA plus.

So basically I've had the nexus for 2 days now, and battery life is bad for my standards. I had the Note for 2 weeks and averaged 6 1/2 hours of screen on time before the battery went dead, that includes browsing mostly on the web and the xda app. The only thing on was data and bluetooth, no wifi. On the nexus, with everything off except data, I only average 3 hour screen time. Is this what other folks are experiencing on their nexus?

I was denied a Nexus last week so waiting until tomorrow now. I have a Rezound atm and on this thing it lasts about 2 - 2 1/2 hours(constant use).
just last night I played a game called Sentinal 3 on it. phone was in CDMA mode(LTE off), bluetooth & wifi disabled, and brightness all the way down. when I started playing the battery was at 93%... played 2 levels, took a break & then the battery was at 34%.
granted, each level took about 20min... but still...
I get about ~4 hours of screen time before my battery is dead. Really depends on what I'm doing, and how spread out those 4 hours are.
I'm getting about 3/12 on a work day. With about 25% left. Which is pretty damn good considering the screen. My gpu is 384 mhz and my undervolt's are 250mv+ for each frequency. This weekend i'm seeing if i can get 5 hours screen time with wifi. I know i can get 4 hours plus already and that was before patching my kernel for upping the gpu and undervolting.

Mine was 3 hours too over 12 hours. Not 3.5. This is before i patched my kernel for undervolting. Also my workday is strictly cellular data with many high rises so my cellular is constantly switching radios beause of reception and congestion. I am very very pleased with how well it does. My standby drain is ridiculously good. I get about 1% drain an hour at work and about 1% drain every 2-3 hours at home. I still haven't tested light flow because it is not playing nice with ics yet. I'm sure that will affect my drain. I think people's expectations were/are too high for display time. People that are social nuts and have a live ticker feed on their homescreen so they know when their friends are picking their nose should get the s-lcd version of the nexus. Lcd power drain is a lot more linear compared to amoled screens.

Your standby drain makes me so jealous. I am in the same camp as many, seeing about 3-4% drain an hour with the screen off. That's also with Juice Defender shutting down wifi and data when the screen is off. This leads to my screen/total stats ending up around 2/12, which is frustratingly bad given the numbers I know this phone should be capable of.
I've tried 3 different ROMs, 2 different kernels, 2 basebands, multiple battery calibrations and charge/discharge cycles, but things never improve. So annoying.
I'm pretty happy with my nexus's performance.
It depends what you're doing, keeping wifi on seems to be a killer, im assuming that's because it's constantly scanning. I get ~5 hours screen time with 25% left at the end of the day.
I take off charge @ 7.30am
Goes back on charge with 20-25% at about 11pm
I use auto brightness
I listen to internet radio during my commute for about 30minutes each way over 3G, read my rss feeds and regularly using gtalk and gmail throughout the day. I rarely make phone calls.

not true, specifically during standby. Keeping wifi on during standby and keeping sleep policy to always on has dramatically saved my battery life. I too was @ 3-4% an hour when wifi was off. Now I keep it on and I average 1% an hour. 3g/4g radio towers use more juice on standby than does wifi. There is countless articles about this on the web.
I get about 3:30 hours of screen time on a full charge. But I think this question is very relative. For example I could get more screen time if I wasn't streaming 30-45 minutes of music and didn't have 1:30-2:00 hours of voice calls.

Pixels aren't necessarily what matter when talking about battery life. It's important, but since both are pushing, generally, the same number of pixels...it comes down to screen size. Screen size makes a much bigger impact on battery life (nonlinearly).
So I 've been wanting to really test how long my battery could go with minimal use.
This included...
about 45 minutes of 3G tethering
and about 13 hours on 3G. 4G was disabled the whole entire time
As you can see it was idle a lot, but I almost got 2 full days on stock battery. So no complaints.
Part of me feels like if it was not for that 3G tethering maybe I could have got 4 more hours+
Not bad indeed.
Would rather use my phone and have to charge when I get home then leave it in my pocket all day.
Also your wifi was toggled on the whole time... that would have saved some battery.

I've had an hour of screen time, and about 9 hours of screen off; I've not had it on to charge at all today, and I'm at 60% battery.
If you go into settings/battery, what else is keeping your phone awake? In other threads, people suggest installing 'Better Battery Stats' (nb, cheap, not free) and posting screen shots of the kernel/partial wakelocks. I can't interpret them myself, but others can...

The only complaint I have with this phone is the massive difference between hspa and lte versions in battery life. Other than the razr maxx no late phone has acceptable battery life including the nexus. To get 5-6.5 hours screen time on my nexus versus friends 2.5-3 on an lte version is just crummy. I know some people just have extra batteries but that short of usable battery life is just too much of a hassle for me when I'm out and about. I would be forced to get a huge ugly seidio battery if I needed to move to Verizon. Even with 4g disabled the Verizon/sprint versions don't get the screen time I get with my hspa nexus. I really hope lte radios get more efficient and battery tech gets better. Removable or not, all phones can be made as sleek with a huge battery if manufacturers wanted. The maxx is proof of that.

How long is school? What ROM/Kernel, if any, are you running? Is this the stock battery?
I am losing about 1-2%/hour while I sleep but I feel I get acceptable battery life. I am running Affinity with default Franco r249 kernel. I also have an 2100 mAh battery. Using WiFi almost the whole time this is my most battery life. I would recommend an extended battery and connecting to the school's WiFi if it's available.

What does your phone say is using your battery? Try clean flashing the ROM, or maybe a different ROM, and see if that helps. How often are apps set to pull data? Look at your battery stats after school and see where it's leaking from.

Do you leave your GPS on? Turn of data if you know your not going to be using it for a while.

There is nothing on (gps-data-etc.) i have only calling and texting enabled.
If you have a weak signal inside the building, and mobile network enabled for receiving calls, your phone will expend a lot of battery just trying to constantly find and reconnect to the mobile network. May even get warm. This is especially true if you also have automatic data-sync enabled and your phone is trying to sync a lot of apps over a weak signal. You could test this out by leaving your phone in airplane mode for a few hours. If you get no battery drain then, it's probably a weak signal causing the problem.
Above post is True. When I was in school in a full concrete building I drained heavely. At 10 hours I drained 2 full batteries with my S2.
Try turning in the airplane mode and you'll see a big diffrence. Turn it off When u have a break and are outside.
Btw 30% battery usage on 7 hours isnt bad..

Even with the phone completely unused and idle and the screen off, if there is a weak signal the radio will be working overtime trying to stay connected to the mobile network, causing battery drain.
I don't know what happened with the 20120914 CM10 nightly, but I've been getting incredible battery life since flashing it (dirty flashed from M1).
Where I usually got something about 2h 50min of screen on time, I'm now getting 4h+. This is with 3G data, GPS, BT (no connected devices 99% of the time), WIFI, automatic backlight and screen rotation on, CPU at 1350 MHz and GPU at 384 MHz. Good times :good:

I know most of you already notice this but if you don't:
In Setting/ Power saving mode, check the "CPU power saving" then your phone will be limit to 1.1GHz max from 1.6Ghz.
I would suggest to tick on the "Screen power saving", "background color" and "turn off haptic feedback" to save some extra juice.
LTE on. 24h unplugged. 75% screen brightness. Full heavy haptic feedback. Heavy gaming and Internet use. Phone calls. Texting. 3D live wallpaper. Still 7h screen on time before the phone finally had to be plugged in.
I don't know what you use your phone for but I'm going crazy on mine and can't kill the battery. If you need more juice, then more power to ya. I can't fathom why.

Try a day without charging your phone at your desk. Yesterday I pulled in about 7 hours of on-screen time. That's with LTE and anything else internet intensive you could imagine. The only way you'll overcome that worry you have is to test it out yourself. I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

I don't know what you use your phone for but I'm going crazy on mine and can't kill the battery. If you need more juice, then more power to ya. I can't fathom why.

I'm with you. I came from the Skyrocket and it was a struggle to get through a full weekday on LTE. In the past week with the Note 2 I don't even have to think about charging it when I'm awake during the day. It's very liberating!

I would understand this philosophy if the Note 2 didn't have an easily replaceable battery, but in a years time you could replace a poor battery for cheap. Just recently the stand with extra battery and charger was $30 on the Samsung site (it may still be that price)
I think its my ocd from my note 1. Always seeking the longest battery life possible

I came from worse. I had an HTC Raider (Vivid) and that battery was horrid. Stupid HTC putting a 1620mah battery in a phone with LTE and a 4.5" screen

Damn, I wish I could get run times like that. I usually get HSPA signal and after 16 hrs I'm dead with 4-5 hrs of screen on time. I mostly text and do web browsing. Maybe an hour of music with wifi on all the time and auto brightness. Still lasts longer than my SGS3 did.
My first charge is 7 hours screen time for 24 hours unplugged. Now it's going down hill to 4-4:30 hours after i rooted and remove bloats. Installed couple MoDs.. Dammed i wish i can go back to 7 hours screen time

You do know to "remove bloat" all you had to do was go into the stock app manager in settings and disable anything you didn't want. That is actually a much better solution than "freezing" with TiBu or removing altogether. I'm not convinced root and mods are 100% stable yet. Most people reporting decreased battery life are those that have rooted or modded something. I'm still 100% stock with ATT stuff disabled and batt life is still 7+ hours.

Even bare stock I wasn't getting that much screen on time. So far I've only rooted and changed the kernel. Though today my battery life is starting off good. Yesterday I ticked the power saving option for the screen. I'll post an update tomorrow.
Today I was on for 5.5 hours, screen time of 2.2 and was at 54% with Power Saving On
So I went to bell and grabbed another battery
Time will tell if that helps
I could never reach 5 hours of screen time but could have the phone on for 30+ hours
I cant wait till we get more developer support, I used Francos Kernel with my galaxy nexus and it improved battery by 30 % and made my 8 hours overnight use only 2% battery. I was using 12-17% overnight with my note 2 asleep. Aside from kernels and roms I use this phone exactly the same as I did my Nexus. wifi off, bt off, gps on, push email on, auto brightness

Lithium Ion batteries actually do better if you don't charge it constantly. In other words let it run down a bit before charging. You don't want to always keep "topping it off". But in general these batteries are much more resilient than others.
Just do some research. There's lots of info out there.

Umm, no, it does not. You are stressing the battery out. Unless needed, dont keep the battery below 20%. Its healthier to charge the phone sporatically throughout the day.
These aren't nickel batteries...they dont need to be trained or "cycled"

I'm a battery test engineer so I have played around with Li-ion batts.
If you can keep the phone at cool temperature and charge at 40% and stop at 80% then keep doing 40-80, your battery will last double long

Agreed. Full discharges are not necessary for lithium ion batteries. Full discharges were needed for NiCad or NiMH batteries as they suffered from memory effect. LithIon doesn't suffer from this. With that said, a lot of experts do suggest discharging a LithIon periodically, maybe once a month or every other month.
This is my battery with light gaming and slight use with data on, with a lot of texting.

Lucky you! I've been working on tweaks to my stock rooted system to get past 7 hours with data on. I'm going to test tomorrow or Monday.
Looks almost exactly like mine.
Man what are you guys doing? Here is mine over the past few days.
Mind you this is about 15-30 of minecraft and Epic Pirate Story during lunch. Full data and sync on with 4G/3G but mostly WiFi. About 30-40 min of web browsing. Tons of google talk and feedly news reader. Tons of pictures and about 5 min of video taken for each of those days.
Only mod to the phone is the camera mod.
pictures may be out of order but I think you get the just of it.
it all comes down to screen on time. less than 4 hours of screen time between charges is not very good.
Seeing a little over 4 hours of screen on time while using the AOSP roms.

I already hit a 5h 15m mark once letting the kiddos watch a movie off the internal and then Netflix. The movie was hour and forty and Netflix took it down the rest of the way streaming on 4G.
on average I get roughly 2.5 to 3.5 hours in each charge which I'm fine with considering I could barely hit 8 hours before a dead battery with 2 hours screen on with my old Epic 4G Touch.
I'm sure I could get 4 hours screen on time if my phone wasn't the on sprints horrible network. I'm constantly searching for a data signal in Arizona. I do usually get just over 3 hours screen on and about 18-21 hours total between charges.

I ALWAYS have my data off during the day and I never really connect to WiFi.
I don't need my data on for the day. XD.
Edit: when I go back to school Monday, I'll screenshot my screen on time and battery life length.

Im getting almost 2 days with light usage. Data is off when I am out and bout. Wifi on the whole time I am home. Screen brightness at 30 for most of the day. Full stock rom on its 4th recharge.

I never see such battery life EVER.
I unplugged my phone at 100% at 4 AM once, woke up at 8, it was down to 75%. Wifi and sync were on..

Sounds like you have an app in the background doing something. Even my Epic 4G Touch wasn't that bad. Maybe a weak WiFi and or cell signal causing the battery to drain faster.
An update was this weekend.
Unplugged phone at 908am saturday morning. Plugged it in Sunday night at 1145 with 5% battery.
during the weekend I played Epic Pirate story for 25 min. Shot 150+pictures. Shot about 18 min of video. Wifi coverage was 50% of that at home and the rest was 3G/4G. Oh and streamed two episodes of revolution VIA FTP from my home Android server on 4G. Other than that I cruised the web and used feedly for news feeds.
At work I generally drop 3% in an hour and half without touching the phone with 50% cell signal and corp WiFi at 25% signal strength. At home I have an Airave and pull from WiFi(I have to access points in the house for solid coverage so signal never drops below 50%) and I drop around 1% per hour. Signal really matters when it comes to battery life.
I believe my screen on was around 3h40m.
So all in all I am impressed and love this phone!! Just wish the camera wasn't so crappy.
im at 7.5 hours with 66% left.
Light to moderate use including web browsing and about 15 min of angry birds star wars. Rooted Stock Rom with Loki's IA tweaks as my daily.
Sigh. 35 percent.

I went into settings and used the quad core control. I dont notice any difference in speed but i am also not a gamer. You guys that are having not so good battery life may want to try that and keep screen brightness below 40.

I tried that for two days in a row and didn't see any difference in battery life. Performance was untouched as well so I think that maybe it's already on and/or the app is broken.

Yep that is about what I get with screen on less than 2 hours.
So yesterday I played Epic Pirate story with 50% brightness for 45 min and dropped 25% in battery. Then about 10 min after I stopped playing my battery jumped up 7% LOL. I am seeing this a lot with this phone as it seems that the way the battery is read throws lower % than what is actually there. Odd thing...

It does the exact same thing to me.
Or when I barely use my phone for an hour, then start texting it drops about 3-5%

For me I don't see any real drop when texting or anything like that it's only when I run a game or something that really pushes the phone. When I stop playing I'll be at say 50% and then when I look at my phone 10-15 min later it's up to 55-59%. It's like the app reading and watching the battery miss reads it during an intense usage period.
Here's me.
Unrooted.
seems like battery dies sooo fast when listening music.
