I need battery life! - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Alright I have grown beyond angry at how crapy my battery life is...... I go into school with 100 percent battery and everything off except texting and calling (which I send like 5 texts all day) and I come out with less than 70 percent. I have low signal in the building though, and my phone is set to the lowest speed on power save and I hardly ever turn the screen on. I would like for you guys to share your battery life's here with screen shots if you have them and your whole setup. Thanks beforehand!

Well seems like your phone does not deep-sleep very well? 30% drain doing hardly anything seems much even if the reception is low. I have excellent idle-drain on my Nexus as seen in my attachment.
What does your battery stats show you after a day at school?

How long is school? What ROM/Kernel, if any, are you running? Is this the stock battery?
I am losing about 1-2%/hour while I sleep but I feel I get acceptable battery life. I am running Affinity with default Franco r249 kernel. I also have an 2100 mAh battery. Using WiFi almost the whole time this is my most battery life. I would recommend an extended battery and connecting to the school's WiFi if it's available.

What does your phone say is using your battery? Try clean flashing the ROM, or maybe a different ROM, and see if that helps. How often are apps set to pull data? Look at your battery stats after school and see where it's leaking from.

Do you leave your GPS on? Turn of data if you know your not going to be using it for a while.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app

There is nothing on (gps-data-etc.) i have only calling and texting enabled.

If you have a weak signal inside the building, and mobile network enabled for receiving calls, your phone will expend a lot of battery just trying to constantly find and reconnect to the mobile network. May even get warm. This is especially true if you also have automatic data-sync enabled and your phone is trying to sync a lot of apps over a weak signal. You could test this out by leaving your phone in airplane mode for a few hours. If you get no battery drain then, it's probably a weak signal causing the problem.

Above post is True. When I was in school in a full concrete building I drained heavely. At 10 hours I drained 2 full batteries with my S2.
Try turning in the airplane mode and you'll see a big diffrence. Turn it off When u have a break and are outside.
Btw 30% battery usage on 7 hours isnt bad..

Even with the phone completely unused and idle and the screen off, if there is a weak signal the radio will be working overtime trying to stay connected to the mobile network, causing battery drain.

I don't know what happened with the 20120914 CM10 nightly, but I've been getting incredible battery life since flashing it (dirty flashed from M1).
Where I usually got something about 2h 50min of screen on time, I'm now getting 4h+. This is with 3G data, GPS, BT (no connected devices 99% of the time), WIFI, automatic backlight and screen rotation on, CPU at 1350 MHz and GPU at 384 MHz. Good times :good:

I have great battery life running stock with kernel, VZW leak that is, apologize if you're on another carrier

When did your battery life start to get better?

I have had the phone for 5 days and with fairly light usage, I am still not getting good battery life. I turn off all data and wifi when not using it and screen on time is below 2 hours.

It doesn't get better...get used to it until its fixed in an update , along with the other big issues.

By about the 3rd day it seemed better. But it's also difficult to gauge because the first few days you're bound to toy with it constantly.
Until there is an empirical way to gauge usage, like an amp meter attached to the phone - it's all perception imo.

You really have no idea what you're talking about. First of all, it will get better, I won't bother explaining the science behind it considering you can do your own research, but it will, also, it can't be "fixed." Just like they can't make it an 8 mega pixel camera in an OTA. You can get it much better by doing custom roms and thigns of that nature.

First off, it's hard to tell by your screenshot how good or bad your battery life is. You're burning approximately 10%/hr, but maybe you had your screen on or were surfing the internet for a portion of that time. Anything that involves data transfer will kill your battery faster.
I got my Galaxy Nexus on Wednesday, and I've had great battery from the start. I calibrated it by letting the phone's initial charge die down to zero, and then charged it all the way up to 100%, and then used the Battery Calibration tool. I drain between 2-3% hour with light use, but can obviously drain much more depending on what I'm using the phone for.
That being said, for those on this board who think an OS upgrade is going to fix the problem, I highly doubt it. I have a reasonably poor cell signal (averages around -95 dbm), but still get solid battery life. Given that we were all issued phones with the same software, if you're experiencing incredibly bad battery life, I'm going to point my finger at the hardware. It just doesn't make sense that some of us with 4.0.2 get great battery life, and others do not. You probably have either a bad battery or a bad phone. Now, I'll probably get called out for saying this, but watch all the posts that follow when the update releases, when people still have poor battery life.
This is my 3rd Android phone (Incredible, Charge, GN), and every one of these phones has had poor battery life. On average, if I'm playing around with the screen on, I'm draining upwards of 10%/hr, if not more. But if you properly calibrate the battery - which is VERY important - you should easily be able to get a full day's charge out of your phone.
There is a post on XDA about the 13 steps to proper battery calibration. Once I followed it on my last phone, my battery life went up at least 50%. You have to let the battery drain to 100%, then bump charge a number of times, then use the battery calibrator.

Your results may vary, but when I used Juice Defender or Green Power on my Droid Charge, I nearly doubled the battery life. I haven't put it on my GN yet because my battery life is much better than what I had with the Charge.
No using JD or anything like that. Just the the phone do its thing. I don't even open the multitask button unless I want to switch between apps.

Gotta be a software issue with the battery.
Just this past weekend in Wash DC. Very strong 4 G market.
I had it fully charged off charger. After 7 hours without touching the phone even with google plus sign out, the battery went from 100% to 54%. It's like the phone was active a lot without me even touching it. No SMS/mms either. No emails either.
Know. I did same thing and put it on airplane mode with it 100% charged. After 7 hours on airplane mode it was at 98%.
So it's gotta be an operating system issue.
I tried it on wifi instead of 4G mode. And battery drainage was down to 72% after no use overnight.

Want great battery life and a stable phone?

Don't use any type of battery monitor, widget or notification.
I was getting good battery life but had a few weird cases of reboots and where the phone would just shutdown and then need battery pull to get back up.
Since I stopped using any type of battery monitor/widget/notification my battery life is much much better (same usage pattern/apps) and I have not had a single reboot or issue.
I just wanted to share this for people having problems. Worth a shot.

There are a number of things that affect this. Most importantly, use CPU spy to check how much time your phone spends at each frequency, or rather in deep sleep. Some monitors in certain settings will keep the phone awake, draining battery.

Well the screen was on for 1 hour and 50 minutes (at max brightness) according to battery stats, so I'm not using it THAT much but the point is that a battery widget doesn't seem to have a big impact on battery life.
I also noticed that if I stop constantly closing applications after using them (by swiping on the ICS task switcher), my battery lasts a little longer

However, when I do not have the androidOS wake bug, if my phone is on wifi I lose ~3-7% overnight, which is good IMO

I run the stock GSM battery, it lasts all day so I have no complaints.
If I had the samsung spare battery w/ charger for business trips i'd be set for those flights and airport waits.

[Q] Is this normal battery usage?

It feels like my phone can't last much more than a day.
Am I expecting too much juice from my phone or is this the normal amount it should be at?
Generally speaking for me I only last about 12 hours unplugged. Even when not in use on idle, i seem to lose 1% every 10-20min or so.
Someone please shed some light based on these battery screenshots and tell me if its normal or not.
Your biggest wakelock is audio out. Turn off keyboard sounds and screen touch sounds and lock sounds. Now your phone can sleep better.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
You seem to have fairly frequent screen-on usage paired with frequent intervals of GPS usage (see battery graph).
Are you using GPS that frequently? If not, id investigate on why your GPS is being utilized so frequently.
I'd say based on your usage, your battery life is fairly normal.
Two hour screen time... That sounds about normal to go from full to dead. You're lucky the phone made it 12 hours. Many people get a lot less.

Two hours screen on time is normal? I hope you mean for the Verizon version..
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
with wifi on the whole time, that should help the battery last longer. I'm on LTE version and my battery life is similar to yours, but on 4G.
Based on your info, I would guess that you can improve it by turning off some things going on in the background. Widgets, weather, screen brightness, anything else using lots of background data or ram?
Sleeping with 4G, sync, and GPS all on I lose 1-2% per hour. But that's with no background apps other than stock OS stuff + AVG. I normally get 2.5 hrs screen time 100%-0% on 4G over a 12 hour period.
Well there's half the problem right there, facebook, it's refreshing for updates all the time.. also, underclock your phone so the max is 920MHz might save some, unless you wanna do some gaming or something it doesn't matter. Audioout seems to cause a lot of wake time for all android phones.. seen it in the epic 4g forums. But yessiree Bob.

Normal for a lot of people. Just look at all the poor battery threads. I get 2:30h with my gsm GN running Wifi and very minimal apps which sync. My browser is inverted and my screen brightness is low.
I get good standby time, but that doesn't really comfort me as I have a powerful phone I can't actually USE.
You will hear people say they get great battery life or they are fine with 2h screen time, but I just think they don't want to admit that a $700 phone in 2012 should have better life than this.
If you ask for advice, people will tell you to stop complaining and / or get a new phone. Don't reply to them or an XDA mod will threaten to ban you. Happened to me.

With standard battery and stock ROM this phone can only give 2.5 - 3 hours screen time, which is unacceptable IMO in this day and age.
Turn GPS off, turn wifi off, don't use this app, only use that app, turn sounds off, don't increase the brightness, limit the cpu etc etc... So why did I buy a smartphone that I can't use then?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
I have owned more android phones than I can count, and tried more ROMs and Kernels than you can imagine. Countless times I have seem claims of improved battery life, and until recently nothing made a noticeable difference short of not turning on the phone. I am running the latest GummyNex Rom with the Franco Kernel 15.2 and it is shocking. I have verified the last two nights by leaving phone off the charger. Night #1 -8 hours 30 minutes phone sat while I slept, on 4g GPS enabled, and used 8% battery. Last Night 8:15 phone sat, same conditions only 7% battery usage. I am using the "Franco Turtle" governor and notice not performance degradation and only incredible battery life. Very impressive

Battery life and overall performance

Hey guys I'm loving this phone and all but I just want to get everyone else's opinions about how smooth everything has been running. On my end the LG is AMAZING, very fast and buttery smooth. I always run it in eco mode with the screen set at 65% most of the time. I do encounter a few bumps every now and then. For example my battery is cool when I'm on WiFi but as soon as I use 3g (no 4g in LA yet) it goes to ****. The phone starts to heat up as well. I think this may be a soft wear issue and could be fixed with an update from LG. Also it seems that this phone has a hard time connecting to 3g at times even when I'm outside. If anyone else is having the same issues please share. Thanks

I actually just turned off quad core assistance and connections optimizer and eco mode, because, the battery seemed to drain too fast. Now it is lasting alot longer. I will have to see how it does on a full charge tomorrow, going on 11hrs and at 24% this has been mostly at work where I go from no signal, to roaming, to 3g to 4g depending on where I am at in the building.
I must say I get 4g at my house and work when I am in my office, and this phone is awesome on 4g!!!!!

Battery life is awesome. I have my screen set to 50%. I use connection optimize all the time. I actually find better battery life with it out on even though I am not connected to Wi-Fi. Eco mode it's set to come on at 50% battery life. After a 9 hour day at work my battery is usually at about 85% light use of course. My old samsung epic would be at 30%-40% when I would leave. This phone is amazing. I can't wait for some roms to start coming out.

To cure your problem. ....
New device for first time comes to life doesn't have calibration set by OP system. .....
So first charge your phone to full and go beyond warning to charge and go down to 3-4 % remaining charge then plug to charge and charge without stopping to 100%
And do 2-3 times like this then your battery discharge will show properly
Also good habits are to use .....
Hold home button for 2-3 second and open little bottom screen click on bottom left and choose ram.....then clear ram....any time you going to idle and each time you going to charge. .....to find more about what this do search XDA .....
Also there is many hungry apps on market that runs under ground all the time. ....so learn and discover how to take control of your phone and make it run like champion
#2 you can use ES task manager to do some fine tuning to get the most juice of your battery
#3 Better battery stats
#4 Battery booster
#5 Juice defender. .....are some alternative to top of the iceberg on your solution. ....or you can take time and learn to do all this by yourself manually

Only used the S4 for two days so far, but the battery life is only slightly better than or equal to S3 for me.
Is everyone who posted on LTE or just hspa+, 2g etc?
I notice a big improvement ( like another person mentioned in another thread) when lte is off. My speedtest results between lte and hspa were the same download speeds but lte had better upload by two megabit.
battery life for me is great, then again im coming from an htc amaze lol. That battery suuuucked.
update
I did a few more tests w speed test.net and noticed that when on HSPA plus and not on LTE I actually get faster download speeds. On LTE it was 8 to 10 megabits the last 24 hours and now HSPA plus I'm getting 18 to 21 megabit down. Anyone know why this might be?
P.s. live in Manhattan NyC.

Depends when you do the test because more people may be on the network at certain times. But I thought lte wasnt launched in nyc yet...

I was considering picking one of these up if the battery was better than what I'm getting with the One but sadly this seems worse. I'd like to see more results before concluding that it's any worse.

you could be right.
the representative told me LTE was in New York City but as we know they know nothing... its still weird that when the phone is set to LTE auto he gets slower speeds than one connected on HSPA plus.
