Does AT&T S4 Root Work? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

Was wondering if anyone has tried to root with Motochopper as described in the AT&T S4 forum:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2252248
Regards,

I coulda swore the AT&T version of the S4 had a locked/verifiable bootloader..
It'd be awesome if it got destroyed in nothing flat. It wouldn't be the first time this has happened either (Motorola Xoom (IIRC) anyone?).

i used the motochopper method and it worked perfectly.

Okay, I've looked all over the phone, and I couldn't find USB debugging.. where exactly is this under?
(EDIT: Nevermind. it's just like my Nexus tablet. Keep tapping the Build Number in the "about device" section until it says congratulations you're now a developer. My goodness why is there so much cryptic stuff in later Androids? What happened to a menu for developer options?)
Also, what about the drivers for the S4?
EDIT: 4:27PM, my device is rooted. this trick does work.

I think they made it harder to find to keep ppl with less knowledge from enabling stuff that could screw with the phone. If you want dev options, you have to know it exists, and google to find out how to enable it.

Rooted my phone but no rooted applications work

Hi folks,
I rooted my phone but no applications that require root access work.
I am currently running the 40.2 update on my verizon nexus.
I tried wifi_tether_v3_1-pre111.apk, rom tool box, root checker and root toolbox.
Rooted applications always say that my phone doesn't have root access or a kernel is missing.
When I do a fastboot oem lock, it shows that my phone is unlocked. I am quite confused as to why no programs that require root work for this phone.
Is their any programs out there that can verify that phone is rooted. Is their any technique other then what I tried that can verify it.
I am stuck and I dont know what else to do.
Is anyone else experiencing this issue? I cannot be the only one.
Simply unlocking the boot loader does not give you root. Check the stickies in the dev forum a guide

I have checked. If you could "simply" provide a link to even one sticky with this information other than the "obvious" answer you provided I'd be quite appreciative.
If you don't know that is fine to. Don't be the guy/gal who gives driving directions but has no idea.
Thanks!

You need to install the root binaries to achieve root, look in the general thread and theirs a guide to show you how to root with superboot r3. Once you run it in adb, it will install the binaries and superuser apk. Then after go to the market and search busybox, install the app and let it install the busy box file.
It is impossible that your missing a kernel if your phone can boot. The programs you installed to check "root" are not compatible with the phone. For future reference, check the stickies in the general thread.

Probably been asked: Temp root possible?

I just picked up the Galaxy Epic 4G touch yesterday, prior to this phone I had the HTC Hero (yes I held on to it that long). With the Hero I was able to temp root using the Z4Root.apk & wondered if such a temp rooting method exists with the E4GT. I just want to remove some locked apps, reboot & then return to stock. If someone has an easy one click method that achieves such a thing, could you please help me out?
Use the Auto Root package in my signature. Choose Option A to root, install/remove whatever software you want, then choose Option B to unroot.
I'll give give it a go. Hopefully in the future someone will come up with an on the fly, directly from your phone solution much like Z4 or Universal AndRoot. Thanks again.

Yea I agree the rooting process is as simple as loading drivers and clicking a couple of buttons. If you are worried about anything my bet for you is just leave your phone alone. Rooting this phone could not be any easier...
Boy you are lucky you did not have an OG Evo and had to root when it first came out..
Simply read all of the Autoroot instructions, and you'll be good to go.
Seriously, it's really easy - may seem a bit overwhelming at first, but just read everything.
Then just unroot if (for whatever reason) you don't want permanent root.

Nothing hard about it at all.
I was merely stating that rooting with an apk would be more "convenient" as opposed to having to connect your phone to a pc to root/unroot, that's all.
And you're right I don't need to root but I do have the desire to use rooting functions as a temporary basis.

Actually the only step in the Auto Root package that needs to be done while connected to PC is the Option A (root)
The rest, Option B (unroot), Option C (install stock/CWM bootimg), Option D (CIQ off/on, OTA compliance check) can all be run from the phone.
There are instructions on how to do so in the reference section under "Included scripts"

Noob question... trying to root!

Ok.. I have a T-Mobile Note 3 now… and I am trying to root it… expected it to be easy, after dealing with my AT&T note 3 with its lockedboot loader!!!!
...not so much…
SO… two problems so far:
The instructions I am finding tell me to “turn off ‘Reactivation lock’ feature is turned off under Security Settings.
….and I can not find that setting !!
Second problem:
The problem I am having is that one of the first things I need to do is figure out my “AP Version”, and the instructions I am finding to do so is to dial *#1234# on my phone.
Unfortunately, what I get when I do that is: First it says “USSD CODE RUNNING” and then it says “unable to process request”
Is there any other way to get this information?
Thank you for any help!!

What ??? What guide are you trying to follow? Please post link as i would like to see this.
1. Settings>General>Security make sure reactivation (like 4th option down) is unclicked. If it is set, you did this when you first set up your phone.
2. Don't know why you need AP information. There is absolutely "NO" need for this in the rooting process.
I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that you are running a brand new Note 3 from the store running JellyBean 4.3. The first post in this thread is the FAQ's . The second Question gives you links on how to root your phone. That's pretty much all you need to do. CF_Auto root is a 30 sec rooting process using a windows computer. Root De La Vega will root your phone also, but is no longer support by the developer.

Hi!
Thank you for your help!!
I think I might be being too paranoid... but I am trying to do this very carefully, so that I do not brick my phone... and it is difficult when things do not line up.
I just bought THIS note 3 used, and factory reset it. I took three screen shots.. one showing the "about" screen... the other two showing all the options under "security"... none of which mention "reactivation"
I performed a hard reset on the phone just before I did this, incase the re was other stuff done to it before.
Am I missing something?
Thank you for any help!!

...and the latest: I noticed that I can not get software updates (it says s "custom updates not available...") I do some research, and it looks like I should check to see if my knox counter has been triggered (I did buy this phone used.. so who knows...)
I follow the online instructions .. it goes to recovery booting".. and NO mention of knox... or what the knox status is.
WTF?!? I am not a software engineer,,, but I *HAVE* rooted phones before... and epic 4g, S3, and note 2 ... and NEVER have I had this much trouble!?!?!?!

[Q] Root Note 3 using Towelroot

Just saw this on NEWS360. Can we use this on our T-Mobile Note3? Has anyone used this?
http://news360.com/article/246046924#
AT&T and Verizon customers, it's finally happened. After many long months of waiting, and a fairly significant bounty up for grabs, your Galaxy Note 3s can finally be rooted! Best of all, it may be the simplest method for achieving root we've ever encountered.
Towelroot is the method, and it's brought to us by none other than famed hacker geohot, known for being the first to jailbreak an iPhone and hack the PlayStation 3. And trust me when I say it's easy, because once you have the app, you'll be rooted in less than thirty seconds. Yup, no USB cables, no PCs...just one quick download and the tap of a button.
Note that the video above from Dallas is showcasing the Samsung Galaxy S5, but the steps will be exactly the same for any variant of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, as well as other Android devices (except for HTC and Motorola, for now). For a detailed explanation of how this exploit came to be, and what it actually does to gain root privileges, check out the full article by Dallas for a full breakdown.
Step 1: Download TowelRoot
Go to the Towelroot homepage on your Android device and click on the lambda symbol to download the app.
Step 2: Install the APK
Next, make sure installation from "Unknown sources" is checked in Settings -> General -> Security -> Device administration, then tap on the APK file to install Towelroot.

Step 3: Rooting Is One Click Away!
When Towelroot launches, all you have to do is click the make it ra1n button, and the process will be initiated—your Note 3 will automatically reboot, and when back up, will be rooted.
Step 4: Install SuperSU
You're rooted, but susceptible to malicious apps taking advantage without your permission. To alleviate that, head to the Google Play Store to install Chainfire's SuperSU.
Surprised that out of 52 views there are no answers/suggestions. Anhyone?

Thanks for your input. I looked at Kingo which I used on my Note 2 successfully and it was simple. I looked at CF Autoroot, too. However, when I read about Towelroot it looked very simple to use and root. That is why I posted this thread looking for others who may have used it with success.

Unless an exploit was discovered seconds ago, it will not work. Believe me, when it's finally exploited, the news will be bigger than The Beatles stepping foot on U.S. soil for the first time.
Kind of interesting how it does say it's for our phone. I myself doubt that an exploit was discovered without a whole bunch of people blowing up the threads about it. LOL Who wants to give it a shot?
Based on the Comments I read, Some have said it will work. One person said it failed but another commented & said it would work & he just needed to find the right firmware. I think I will give it a Try this evening when I get home from Work. If this does Work OMG!
ive been flamed plenty of times but i said months ago it wont get root. people dont listen smh

SO Do I even act as if I know if it will work or not, NO which is why I posted here to get a Straight Forward Honest Answer, Not these Asinine Smart @$$ Comments. Sheesh WTH The OP posted in the Comments it would work with BOTH the Developer Edition & the Retail Version,
I don't see anything about it being specific to the Developer Version only. It says it's for SM-N910v and doesn't contain the developer model number, SM-N910VMKEVZW.
I do see a disclaimer on the CF-Auto-Root page: http://autoroot.chainfire.eu/ that says "If you have locked bootloaders, flashing one of these will probably brick your device..." and it is my impression that the whole reason it's taken a while for a root exploit to surface was because of our locked bootloaders.
Look at the screenshots, that looks like 2 generation old touchwiz. And a random website called androidxda? Doesn't seem like a very reputable site.
The bootloader is locked, flashing CF-Autorooot will not work. This is basic stuff. Also for future reference, this doesn't belong in Android Development section.. take questions to Q&A.

I can confirm that this process works ONLY on the Note 4 Developer Edition. It will not work on the retail version no matter what firmware the user has on his phone because the retail version has a locked bootloader and the Developer Edition has an unlocked bootloader. This process will fail as soon as it tries to replace the stock recovery partition with the custom recovery (TWRP in this case).

I noticed some of what you are saying. I don't know Most of the "Basic" stuff with Android Root Methods. I can follow a Procedure to Root a Device. I don't know if this will work if this wont work etc etc AGAIN which is Why I brought the Questions to the PROS. I did look at some of this Questionably though. I also looked through the Comments & the OP posted 4 days ago that is would Work on Either Edition. I also Commented asking him again but the Comment is not showing up, maybe because it has to be approved before it will show up. The name AndroidXDA actually ADDED credibility to the post for me BUT it also made me Hesitant which AGAIN is why I brought the Question here to the PROS. As far as where I place the Thread IMO my question could go in the General Section or Android Development. I apologize for the Wrong Placement but I didn't put it in the Wrong Place on Purpose. I recieved a PM saying it had been moved & I even asked the Moderator Why because I still dont know why " Will this ROOT method work" is not a General Question or a question about Android Development. These forums aggravate me sometimes everything needs to be so perfect & in its right place according to moderators Opinions & who knows what that might be & if its placed in the Wrong spot BAM your Head is Bitten Off & you are Scolded for being so STUPID to put (blank) in that section. That is ALL. Sorry for asking a BASIC (dumb) Question & Asking it in the Wrong Place. I can only hope the Forum Gods Forgive me.
OOoooops I think I may have Broken another Rule with this Post. Dang It
THANK YOU jpcalhoun

Possible Bootloader Unlock
Okay I'm sure most of us have bricked or soft-bricked our devices. I have done so on the Note 2. I even screwed on my baseband once. This is what I tried to revive the phone.
1. Odin Stock (No luck)
2. Restore Back up (No luck)
3. And then interesting... Rooted a friends phone and created a backup in TWRP, swapped a few files and restored to my phone. (Worked) However, not only did this work, IT CLONED his phone entirely. IMEI, serial no., everything. Pretty much with identical sims- both of our phones would possibly ring when receiving a call.
With that said my initial problem wasn't solved.
So I started looking for a another method.
I found out that Samsung Kies has emergency recovery granted you have Model Number, and Serial No. of the device.
This WORKED. Good as new with exception of new 4.3 Bootloader.
So what I am getting at is...
What if we used the Serial No. of a Developer's Edition device through Samsung Kies to restore a Retail Version???
Theoretically speaking.... Kies would install the Official software for the Developer's Edition to our Retail device, Thus giving us and Unlocked Bootloader.
I only have 4 days left to return my device to Walmart.
If someone is willing to provide me with the serial number of a Dev Edition I will try this immediately.
Cheers!

I'm pretty sure this won't work because the Developer Edition bootloaders are INDIVIDUALLY signed. So, there is no way you can unlock the bootloader on a retail version...there is no Samsung "signature" for that bootloader.
Thanx for the clarification. Absolutely makes sense.
Is the SM-N910V a developer edition?
Just got one in the uk. My EE Sim works but no data, so I was gonna root it, then flash a eu rom on it. It's on 5.0.1
Thanks
Only if you bought a Developer Edition straight from Samsung......if it is a retail model it has a locked bootloader. ...so no flashing because you can't install custom recovery. Only root is temp root that goes away with reboot.
