Just saw this on NEWS360. Can we use this on our T-Mobile Note3? Has anyone used this?
http://news360.com/article/246046924#
AT&T and Verizon customers, it's finally happened. After many long months of waiting, and a fairly significant bounty up for grabs, your Galaxy Note 3s can finally be rooted! Best of all, it may be the simplest method for achieving root we've ever encountered.
Towelroot is the method, and it's brought to us by none other than famed hacker geohot, known for being the first to jailbreak an iPhone and hack the PlayStation 3. And trust me when I say it's easy, because once you have the app, you'll be rooted in less than thirty seconds. Yup, no USB cables, no PCs...just one quick download and the tap of a button.
Note that the video above from Dallas is showcasing the Samsung Galaxy S5, but the steps will be exactly the same for any variant of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, as well as other Android devices (except for HTC and Motorola, for now). For a detailed explanation of how this exploit came to be, and what it actually does to gain root privileges, check out the full article by Dallas for a full breakdown.
Step 1: Download TowelRoot
Go to the Towelroot homepage on your Android device and click on the lambda symbol to download the app.
Step 2: Install the APK
Next, make sure installation from "Unknown sources" is checked in Settings -> General -> Security -> Device administration, then tap on the APK file to install Towelroot.

Step 3: Rooting Is One Click Away!
When Towelroot launches, all you have to do is click the make it ra1n button, and the process will be initiated—your Note 3 will automatically reboot, and when back up, will be rooted.
Step 4: Install SuperSU
You're rooted, but susceptible to malicious apps taking advantage without your permission. To alleviate that, head to the Google Play Store to install Chainfire's SuperSU.
Surprised that out of 52 views there are no answers/suggestions. Anhyone?
I wasn't able to get towelroot or kingo to work I had to use cf autoroot.

I think the problem is that there are already threads about this and it's a known subject so most will tend to ignore it. You might want to do a search. Unless I'm misunderstanding what you're asking.

Thanks for your suggestion . I did do a search and when I keyed in the subject there were about 4 threads that showed up. I even went to the ROOT TAb. However, I could not find a specific thread for Towelroot. That is why I asked the question. If I missed that thread, please someone let me know. Thanks!

Thanks for your input. I looked at Kingo which I used on my Note 2 successfully and it was simple. I looked at CF Autoroot, too. However, when I read about Towelroot it looked very simple to use and root. That is why I posted this thread looking for others who may have used it with success.

Hi folks,
I rooted my phone but no applications that require root access work.
I am currently running the 40.2 update on my verizon nexus.
I tried wifi_tether_v3_1-pre111.apk, rom tool box, root checker and root toolbox.
Rooted applications always say that my phone doesn't have root access or a kernel is missing.
When I do a fastboot oem lock, it shows that my phone is unlocked. I am quite confused as to why no programs that require root work for this phone.
Is their any programs out there that can verify that phone is rooted. Is their any technique other then what I tried that can verify it.
I am stuck and I dont know what else to do.
Is anyone else experiencing this issue? I cannot be the only one.
Simply unlocking the boot loader does not give you root. Check the stickies in the dev forum a guide

You need to install the root binaries to achieve root, look in the general thread and theirs a guide to show you how to root with superboot r3. Once you run it in adb, it will install the binaries and superuser apk. Then after go to the market and search busybox, install the app and let it install the busy box file.
It is impossible that your missing a kernel if your phone can boot. The programs you installed to check "root" are not compatible with the phone. For future reference, check the stickies in the general thread.

hi all I'm trying to root my phone but there is so many different ways to tour. I would like the simplest way to root but I want it to do everything that all rooting software would do. I've come across one click options and would like to do those since I don't have to use my computer. Please help! Thanks
you are so going to get bashed in here for asking that question. The expectation is that everybody reads everything they can and then if they are hung up on something they can post a question. I am a relative noob although I have lurked on this site for a few years. I don't bash anybody though.
I understand your frustration.
I simply flashed a single .tar file to my phone while my phone was in download mode. I felt it was very simple using windows on my Mac. There is the very simple Exynos exploit file somewhere here where you download it and basically install it. I thought that this Exynos installation did something to the camera app.
Hopefully, somebody here will help you determine what is best for you. I really haven't tried many methods of root. I like to stick with one I am familiar with since a lot things might go wrong if not done right.
I am not sure what you mean by having the root method do everything that all rooting software would do. When you root you are just gaining access to portions of your phones files that are locked when you buy it. If you want more 'stuff' then you would flash a custom rom after rooting

Check out Chainfire's method for rooting. It's very simple, there is even a video instruction going step by step. It took me 5 minutes and I came from an Iphone. Head on over to the Original android development subforum, you'll see it there. Good luck!

I used the exynos abuse because I didn't need to use my computer to do it and it worked fine. But once I did the latest OTA update from AT&T, I lost root. So I did the Chainfire method. (See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1980644 )
t's really easy and took about 5 min.

Just got my Note 2 about 3 weeks ago and haven't ventured into rooting it yet, BUT I did research here on XDA about rooting before doing it to my Galaxy S2 (AT&T) and the one thing I want to mention is to take your time are read to confirm whether or not the procedures you're looking at are for the Note 2 AND for the variant you have. Using the wrong process (rooting, kerneling, installing custom rom) can cause all sorts of problems, so don't be impatient if you don't know what you're doing. And by all means DO A COMPLETE BACKUP before you do any rooting.
That said, when I did root my S2, it was a very easy process...took all of about 15 minutes to backup, root, install custom rom, etc.
Good luck...and let us know how you do!

Hey everyone!
I keep reading over and over and over the same questions: HOW CAN THIS NOTE 8 BE ROOTED?
It is very simple actually and takes a few seconds and ZERO flashing. I have read super complicated methods and this one I present to you below is BY FAR the absolute easiest. I have done this myself on dozens of Note 8's. It works perfectly every single time.
1. Download and install "SafeRoot".
2. Unpack it.
3. Run "install.bat".
4. Reboot Note when script finishes.
ENJOY FULL ROOT after a few seconds of time.
I hope this helps the many people I have read about asking how to root this nice little device.

This worked fine for me, and was, as described, SUPER EASY. i was able to de-bloat, but cannot find anyway to move apps to the ext SD card, as I hoped. Any suggestions?
Ok, I rooted my i467 the hard way....but, do you any news on the custom recovery yet? Thanks,

I rooted first with saferoot.zip.
and later performed the unlock. There are a few online unlockers. I prefer one that does not ask for personal information and uses paypal. Just an email and IMEI number. They are all about the same cost. I cannot remember who I used, but I chose the mid price option for 1 to 2 day responce, though I got the unlock codes within an hour.

Thanks for your response. If you don't mind more questions -
1. Would rooting the Note 8.0 make the devise eligible to install Samsung Premier Suite?
2. I presume the saferoot.zip folder should be downloaded to Note 8.0, so no cable is involved. Right?
3. Would unlocking the device mean I'll be able to use sim cards from European and Asian GSM carriers and use the Note 8.0 for tethering?
Thanks again for you kind response.

No, the saferoot.zip is unzipped and ran from the Windows based PC, and you will need the Samsung charging cable to connect.
As for using UK, Canadian, and Asian GSM networks. You will need to load a modem file manually, and if using wifi edit the database with sqlite to the region and channels you are running. For example, US will have nothing listed for channels. To get 14 channels, you can change to JP and 14, and will work everywhere, even in the states.
I have not gotten that far with manually loading the modem file as of yet.
Once you root with saferoot, you may opt to install the Rootcloak app from play store, and install the needed substrate driver, it will tell you when you setup rootcloak.
Any app that does not work with root can be added to rootcloak's white list. I have not found any issues with it and it works very well.

It's probably too late to say this, but I got mine a couple of days ago and I requested an unlock from AT&T as a non-customer and they sent me one in less than 12 hours.
I'm just putting this here so that people know that they should ask AT&T first. It's free and of course it's completely legal. If you are denied, then may be you can go to those websites.

How do you request an unlock from AT&T as a non-customer?
I request an unlock as a former AT&T customer, and after several phone calls and an online request, I still couldn't get the unlock code. At first AT&T claimed I had reached maximum number of unlocks for my account, and then they said this phone/tablet is associated with another account and only the account holder can request the unlock code. Another friend of mine also requested an unlock and was also told she had reached her maximum allowable unlocks (5/year). There is no way she could have requested 5 so far this year. In fact, it's zero. In all, good for you that you could get the code, but for me, it's a very frustrating experience.

With the Note 8.0, I called them and told them I'm not a customer but I bought a used one with clean ESN that was fully paid, so they take your email and open a case for you, after which they contact you. Doesn't this use the same exploit as towelroot? If so it has been patched in kernels dated June 3, 2014, or later which shouldn't be a problem for Note 8.0 users unless Samsung releases another OTA update.
Just be aware that rooting is only halfway there if you want to run custom ROM's and kernels. Flashing a custom recovery will still trip the KNOX "warranty void" flag if you have already upgraded to 4.4.2 even though that can be done from a rooted Android ROM using apps like Flashify.

The "official" Samsung stock ROM is still sitting @ 4.1.2 so this Root method still works perfectly when @ stock rom. You are correct in that people wanting custom roms will still need to go about loading preferred recovery methods. I offer the root method simply because there aren't a lot of custom roms floating around for this Tab and it allows for users to gain access and modify things they obviously wouldn't be able to on the stock rom. I doubt there will be any OTA for this Tab ... but you never know. -smiles-

I didn't realize that AT&T still hasn't provided the KitKat upgrade to this version of the Note 8.0. I have the WiFi only version (N5110) but I know that Rogers Canada has provided KitKat to their users of a model very similar to the AT&T version.
If and When AT&T decides to provide that update both rooting and flashing alternate firmware will be more difficult and likely to trip the KNOX flag in the 4.4.2 bootloader that voids the warranty.

I just bought a T-Mobile Note 3 (N-900T) with 4.4.2 out of the box and have been looking through a billion posts trying to figure out how to root it. Some of the things I read suggest that something else might have been done first, because I'm joining in the middle of the ball game. So far I think I've found four ways to root:
1. Root de la Vega (for 4.4.2?).
2. Install TWRP (Installs Recovery and su?).
3. CF Auto Root (trips Knox?).
See how confused I am? I lost the fourth way. I can't figure out if any actually work on a new 4.4.2.
My desire is root and Recovery, no custom ROM and no Kingo/Vroot.
Comments please.

I agree with you. I have been researching this subject and still not sure what to use to ROOT. I rooted my Note 2 using Kingo Android Root and that was so simple.
Don't really know if I can use Kingo Android Root for 4.4.2?

To OP - why don't you want to use Kingosoft?
I use Kingosoft, no KNOX trip, work just fine for almost 1 month now. Also, I can unroot easily if I want to. In my past experience with Samsung phones, unrooting can be as complex as rooting it in the first place, so I appreciate the ability to unroot easily with Kingosoft.

Just as a clarification:
You have 4.4.2, rooted with that method, and it didn't trip the Knox counter?
As far as I understand it, there is currently no way to root a 4.4.2 Note 3 which doesn't trip Knox. There is some trickery where you can attain root on 4.4.2 without tripping Knox using Mobile Odin Pro, but that process requires that you to start on 4.3.

Oh crap, I didn't know you have 4.4.2. Sorry, Kingo won't work with Kit Kat.
I have 4.3.
Once your are on 4.4.2, there is currently no way to root it without tripping the KNOX. There are several ways to root but all will trigger the KNOX flag.

I guess I am too lazy to try to go through so many steps to root. I personally am looking for a program that will Root without all the additional things to download and install, etc. Until that program is identified, I will remain Stock and unRooted. Personally I am not worried about tripping Knox as I keep my phones for 1 year then pass them down to wife or kids when I upgrade.

Look up CF-Auto-Root. That is a more simplified way to root. My way is if you are also looking to add a custom recovery.

That procedure is not complex. Install TWRP and it installs SuperSU as a bonus. The deterrant for some people, I think, is the need to use Odin to install TWRP. Maybe they will get that problem with GooApp fixed and TWRP installation will get easier. But if Odin is the problem then CF-Auto-Root is the same.

Look up CF-Auto-Root. That is a more simplified way to root. My way is if you are also looking to add a custom recovery.

Don't mean to be stupid, however, CF-Auto-Root has many different versions such as:
1. hite-hitexx-smn9005
2. t03g-to3gxx-9tn7100
3. mo-moxx-fti9300
all of which are ZIP files.
I have Model SM-n900T using Android 4.4.2 T-Mobile Stock.
Does it matter which one of the three above that I would use?
I ASS U ME that I would use 1 since it is 9005?
Thanks for all your help. Maybe I am beyond help. LOL

1 is correct that is the model of your phone. *Actually SM-N9005 is the international model and sm-n900t is the tmobile variant but it should work*
If you just want root then CF auto root is good. If you are planning on adding a custom recovery or ROM I would recommend following the root options provided in the link a few comments above.

FFTony: Thank you very much for your suggestions. I have flashed roms on many of my previous phones and tried so many that it got to the point that I was flashing daily and returning back to stock. I do customize my Note 3 and have done so on many of my other phones. So, I think I will just root to uninstall bloatware. Some of the apks that I use are:
Android Assistant,
Calendar Status
Clean Master
Dolphin Browser Mini
EvernoteGo SMS Pro
HD Widgets
Kingsoft Office
MXPlayer
n7Player
Next Launcher
QuickPic
Swipe Home Button
Swipe Dialer Pro
Tunein Radio Pro
Various News Apks (News360 my favorite)
Titanium Backup Pro (when rooted and on my Note 2)
Just to name a few.
Tried many more but go back to these favorites.
So, Thank again!!!!
You are welcome. I was never into rooting until I purchased the note 3 and this is a phone that is a must to root if you want to take full advantage of all that it can do. I am also glad to give back to this community that helped me learn so much.

Totally agree with your comments regarding this community. They have helped me over the years, too.
I Unzip CF-Auto-Root and now have the following files:
TMAX.dll
Zlib.dll
ODIN3-V3.07.Exe
Odin3.ini
CF-Auto-Root-hite-hitexx-smn9005.tar.md5
Where do I go from here? I assume that I would connect my Note3 via USB and execute ODIN3-V3.07.exe.
All these unzipped files are in one folder.
Thanks again!

Yes, open Odin place the .tar file in the PDA section. Make sure you do not check any boxes on the left. The only ones that should be checked is auto reboot and F. Reset Time. Then hit start.
This conversation is growing silly, I don't know to fault the carriers, manufactures, Google, or us the consumers. This is stupid. It's our device we shouldn't need to do all this to gain certain features. I wouldn't need root if you stop putting all this bull ish on my device, restricting r/w to external sd etc just pathetic. I'm not worried about tripping KNOX, I pushed her down on purpose !

Agree! So, what is your suggestion?
Has anyone tried this and were you able to gain root access:
http://trueandroid.com/how-to-root-samsung-galaxy-note-4-att-sm-n910a-without-pc/
Found the APK file and of course there is no root strategy available, however if you download it you can submit a request to add a want for it like others.
@Chainfire I wish you would just put us out of our misery here and dive in

You REALLY should look at the ATT Note 4 threads because Kingroot has been found to work (read below) for months now. I actually facepalm ed when I saw this post, but I thought that I'd sum it up for you anyway.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2961974
It's only temporary and limited root. It only works on Kit Kat, and if you reboot your phone, you'll have to reroot. Also, at random times, the root will disappear because the phone's write protection will kick in and remove root. In addition, the write protection will prevent system file changes.
And if you are on Lollipop, you can't use Kingroot and if on OC5 or above, you can't diwngrade back to KK.
The generic Note 4 forum (where we are now) is for the international models. The Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon, and ATT models all have their own forums. I read here to keep track of generic Note 4 topics (that affect all Note 4 models) and to get a read up on upcoming firmware updates.
