I think I soft bricked my phone - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

I followed instructions on how to root my S3 and realized when it's too late that it was a ****ty guide. The program crashed half way through so now my phone is stuck saying:
"Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in kies and try again"
Kies was already downloaded for the Root. I start Kies, try and get it working but Kies can't even see my phone. I don't know what to do :/
PS: Other programs do see my phone which makes it even weirder that Kies does not.
Phone type: SPH-L710
Jelly Bean
4.1.2
It WAS in Debug mode when I started the root using Odin 307

You have to be in download mode not debug mode for Odin
I don't remember the button combo for it add I've been using quick boot to go to it
It's turn off then hold
Vol dwn + home + power (thanks toolegit)
Try Odin after you are able to get into download mode.
It'll specifically say download mode I think
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda premium

Vol. Down - Download mode.
Vol. Up - Recovery.
Which rooting instructions did you use? MIght want to Odin back to stock and reroot. I used QBKing77s instructions, and it went very easy. Link is at the top of the GD forum.
Edit: Rather, top of the Android Development forum.

I'll check QBKing77's instructions. The good thing though is that if I take the battery out for 5 minutes I can get back to download mode. But that's it. Download mode or error mode.

My moment did that to me when I didn't have a ROM on it, it kept booting into recovery. Since you're going to download mode, I'm guessing you don't have a recovery either.
If you can't get your 'puter to recognize it, can you try another 'puter? Also, did you confirm you have the latest drivers? Uninstall if necessary and redownload and reinstall them, and try Odin again. As I recall, Odin is rather picky about the drivers being correct. And of course by that I mean the OS.

My computer recognizes it, Kies doesn't. I think I have the latest drivers. Any way you could link to the latest ones just in case? You can see what phone I have in the main post. Also, I don't know if I was using the correct .MD5 file for my exact phone

Here is QBKing77's instructions on how to root your phone. Follow this video exactly. Kies is not required. Here is the ClockworkMod (CWM) recovery. This one or TWRP will work. I personally prefer TWRP, YMMV. You should be using Odin to install the .tar or .md5 file.
Follow QBKing77's video, it's really all you need. He should also have links to the files, but I think these links have the files needed. Not direct links to files, but links to threads with files.
Good luck!

You can. I had no issues rooting with Kies installed.
Now that I think about it, I don't know if you can delete it. I literally rooted my phone as soon as it was done charging and transferred over to my account. I never tried to delete it.

THANKS! I got it working.

Good deal! Glad it's working for you.

Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Recovery mode in Kies

New to Samsung(coming from HTC EVO3D). I was trying to install an update(from the wrong forum i9100 FACEPALM). Anyway, now I have an error message that says to use Kies recovery mode. I can't seem to connect to Kies. Someone please give me some tips. Not rooted and was not looking to root. Just want to do some sort of factory reset to get my device back to normal. Any ideas on what or how I should proceed? TIA
Since you flashed the international version your USB is disabled and if I remember correctly can only be fixed by JTAG. If you have a MicroSD card you can still flash by Mobile ODIN - but be careful doing any wipes from an ICS kernel, including any from the stock recovery. Hope that helps.
Figured it now!! flashed a gingerbread stock rom and now I'm all good!
how did you do it? i am having the same problem
You able to get into download mode? If so just download a stock GB rom and flash in Odin.

can you give a little more insight on that? i'm trying to get into download mode, but i'm stuck at a screen that says, "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again."
(kies won't recognize the phone)
before i was at this screen, i was trying to use odin one-click install to get ICS onto an at&t galaxys2 i727.
any help on how i can get back into download mode, or somewhere else where i can do something, would be a big help.

I actually just encountered this, and I found this way out, I flashed the AGAT recovery with the odin executable.

Need Firmware! Please. SGSIII Sprint

The How To links by Qbking77 don't work and I can't get the required files. My phone is soft bricked and I can only access download mode. I can't access my recovery either.
I need to flash stock firmware etc. I was on Cyanogenmod. Any help is much appreciated.
IF someone could please post the firmware file so I can revert, I would be eternally grateful. Thank you.

He already said he can't get to recovery. He can only get to download. This is the perfect option though... it is a one click and it is going to install the stock recovery. For safe measure, I would suggest a factory default after flashing it. Then, flash a new recovery sometime after.
I just flashed an international kernel being careless and soft bricked my phone here's how I got it back.
1) Install USB Driver for Samsung Galaxy S3 on the computer. (Click Skip Ad on the top of the screen)
2) Download ODIN 3.07
3) Download the latest Sprint OTA 4.1.2 Jelly Bean Official Firmware L710VPBMD4_L710SPRBMD4_SPR.zip
4) Unzip the tar from L710VPBMD4_L710SPRBMD4_SPR.zip
3) Holding Home, Volume Down, then Power, get your phone in download mode. (Hit Volume up to continue once presented with Download Screen)
4) Connect USB Cable and launch Odin on the computer.
5) Make sure Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time are checked click on PDA and point to the TAR, after its verified hit start. Let it go through its paces your phone should be back to stock.
Edit: I also suggest you do Volume Up + Home + Power and then reset the phone to factory defaults after flashing. Will help things run smoother.

[Q] Sprint Note 2 (SPH-L900) Bricked after attempted 4.3 Update

I've been having issue with my Sprint Note 2 for a while. I've also posted this to Reddit and other parts of the forum but so far have gotten no way to fix my issue. Here's the link to Reddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/techsupport...nt_note_2_sphl900_bricked_after_attempted_43/
Sorry, I didn't want to type that all up again and having to deal with formatting and such.
Basically, the gist of it, from what I can gather is that I have accidentally loaded the 4.3 bootloader with KNOX and it is currently preventing me from doing anything productive (flashing CWMR, rooting, installing stock, etc). I read here on the forum that there were ways to do so, especially this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=46861777
I was wondering if there were steps for the Sprint Note 2 SPH-L900?
Any help in debricking my phone is appreciated.
Try these steps.
1. Boot phone into Odin/download mode
2. Flash twrp or cwmr via Odin.
3. When it reboots pull battery and then boot into recovery.
4. Flash this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=36388145 it is mc2 bootloader, firmware, radio, etc...
5. Reboot phone. Things get weird for a few mins but it will boot.
You are now Knox free once again but you are also bone stock.

I've tried that multiple times. The problem here is that I can't load CWMR or TWRP. At first, I assume that I'd have to root so I downloaded the CF auto root file and flash it using ODIN. Then I tried installing CWMR (after converting to .tar using Caboomi's tool here on the forum). It would reboot and I tried holding down volume up + power + home button but nothing would happen. I try combinations of that and still nothing. I flashed the 4.3 sboot.bin to get it back to stock Samsung bootloader then retried with CWMR without rooting first this time and it still doesn't work. ODIN would tell me that it succeeds but I can't enter Recovery no mater the combination of keys that I press. I'm assuming this has to do with Knox in which case I'd just have to wait for the official 4.3 firmware on SamMobile to flash it since stock 4.1.2 won't work.

I tried 3.07, 3.09, and even barebone 1.85 that came with CF auto root. It doesn't work. I can't load recovery just fine (according to ODIN) but I can't get into Recovery.
Here is the fix https://www.dropbox.com/s/s2clvyo4y6gar6s/4.3_Unbrick.tar
I promise this will fix your issue, but when you get done, you will be on MC2 with the 4.3 bootloader, but, it will boot, let you flash recovery and everything. I know this because I did the same thing as you and flashed the old cf-auto root and bricked my phone to, and I created this file to fix it and if you look in the help section, you will find my thread on how to unbrick after 4.3 update fail.
I promise though, this will fix your fone

...My God..... What ever you did, it worked. Turns out, Caboomi's file didn't work too well. I couldn't get CWMR working at all even after converting to .tar. I used TWRP instead and it works. Problem was that it asked me for my password, which I don't know since I tried everything, so I had to resort to wiping everything. I installed the file jlmancuso suggested, loading it onto SD card then flashing using TWRP, and now my Samsung Note 2 is debricked.
Your file was a godsend. Thank you!
No recovery stuck on bootloop
im having the same issue could you post that dropbox link again
So i was able to get recovery back but it wont let me mount my sd card so i cant flash anything through recover was hoping the file you have could be loaded through odin as it is a .tar file correct please help and thanks in advance.

For those of you who have bricked Note 2s (SPH-L900), I'm going to drop a DropBox link here to a folder of ALL of the files that I used to unbrick my phone. I experimented with multiple methods (and several sleepless nights). Some of them will be useful to you, not all. I have the Android SDK and Caboomi's converter for .img to .tar. It doesn't work too well for CWMR just FYI. ODIN-OC will attempt to load stock MC2 onto your phone but it won't work if it's bricked. Arc Converter is a program I used to try convert the MK4 .zip file to .tar to try and flash an update using ODIN. It didn't work. The steps that I took to unbrick my phone will be posted after the link.
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/c2bfpfdf0qbs6bu/ZiNC-BF5kf
Be patient. Some of the files are still updating.
Steps:
1) Put your phone into Download mode by holding volume down + power + home button at bootup
2) Use ODIN (3.07 or 3.09) to load the 4.3_Unbrick.tar file. This will take a bit of time so be patient. Once the phone boots up again, you'll get past the boot screen that says "Samsung Galaxy Note II" and you'll get the Samsung logo with the spinning icon but it will loop. This is normal.
3) Next, power off (yank the battery and cable, leave battery out but plug the cable back in) and reboot into download.
4) Flash the TWRP .tar file (don't try converting the CWMR to .tar, it won't work) then reboot.
5) Hold volume up + power + home button (be patient here)
6) You should see the Team Win logo. You're now in recovery. The TWRP may ask you for the password. It is NOT the passcode to your lockscreen or your Google password. I have no idea what it is. At this point, you'd have to wipe your phone (internal only) if you want to flash the stock recovery.
7) Load the MC2 stock recovery file with counter reset onto a microSD card and mount it onto the phone (play around with TWRP, if it doesn't see the SD card the first time, restart or play with the mount function). Just be careful not to wipe your microSD card.
8) Flash the stock recovery (give it time) and it'll restart. You should be back at 4.1.2.
EXTRA STEPS
If you're still interested in 4.3, load the MK4 update onto the microSD card as well. BEFORE you go through the activation process for the 4.1.2 firmware at boot, boot into recovery. Flash the 4.3 update using stock recovery. This should put you onto 4.3 after the phone reboots. You should now have stock 4.3 (no root).
Sorry for all the download errors, I am uploading to my websight right now and as soon as it uploads, I will post the URL, it should download much faster too. I didnt realize so many people needed it

Brick, brick, and more brick

Guys, I think I really screwed myself this time.
1) When I turn my phone on, it shows "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies and try again." However, when I try to do the emergency recovery on Kies, it doesn't show up on the list of devices that requires emergency recovery.
2) Somehow I deleted CWM, and I have no backups
3) Stock firmware doesn't load correctly. I tried it (Maybe with the wrong file, I don't know), and it got me to the start screen, but the touchscreen freaked out on me.
Hope all of you like a challenge... Thanks in advance.
EDIT: Phone won't boot to recovery, Even when I press up-home-power it stays in odin mode.

This sometimes happens when an ongoing OTA update is interrupted. You could first try firmware recovery via Kies. If that doesn't work, then you can flash custom recovery via Odin, since you can get into download mode, and flash a complete stock image or custom ROM via recovery. To try the first option ...
1) Install and open Samsung Kies on your PC. You need Kies now and not Kies-3
2) Open Tools => Firmware upgrade and initialization
3) Enter your model name (SGH-I747)
4) Enter the serial no of your device. Open the back cover and look in the battery compartment for this
5) Do not plug in your phone at this time but make sure you have a good quality data cable ready
6) Wait for firmware download to finish and follow the rest of the on-screen instructions. Connect your phone when prompted and allow firmware restoration to be complete.
Hope this works. If it doesn't, then try firmware restoration via (custom) recovery. I wouldn't suggest you try flashing with Odin in case your phone's bootloader already updated to 4.3. Your safest best would be to flash a complete 4.3 stock image and you can follow the instructions posted in this thread ... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2658486
First, you would need to flash custom recovery to your phone via Odin. You can use TWRP or CWM for now since the files posted in the thread support either one or other of the two. If you need further directions or help on this, please let us know. Good luck!

For the Kies way, It starts working, but then it turns off suddenly.
For the other way, I don't know how to do it, because I think CWM got deleted off my phone.
EDIT: When I removed the SIM Card, I was able to install the firmware. However... It freaks out whenever I put it in recovery mode, not letting me select an option. Oh, and When it gets to the purple oval with the samsung logo in the middle while booting, it shuts off.

You said you were able to successfully flash the firmware. Good! Was this via the Kies option or the recovery option? If you flashed the firmware, then you are there already. Can you try booting into recovery again and doing a wipe/factory reset? If this doesn't work, then we can try the 4.3 restore.

Except, of course, you'll need to be able to get into recovery mode fully to use this option. You may try downloading TWRP for your device via the following URL ...
http://techerrata.com/file/twrp2/d2att/openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.1-d2att.tar
Boot your phone into download mode and flash the recovery *.tar file via Odin
Check if you can successfully boot into TWRP. If so, you can try the hard wipe thing here. If not, it gets more difficult and you may need to go back to Odin.
If TWRP recovery works ....
1) Try doing a hard wipe/reset. If this works and enables you reboot successfully, order a drink or something. If you still cannot boot successfully, then try next step below.
2) Download the 4.3 stock recovery zip for TWRP posted in the following thread. Verify the MD5 and save to an external SD card...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2658486
3) Place the SD card in your phone. Reboot to TWRP recovery and select install. Wait for flashing to complete. Clear your cache/dalvik and reboot to system
If you still cannot get to recovery ....
4) There is an Odin flashable *.tar file for i747 on 4.3. There have been mixed reports on its success, however. Some have reported using it successfully whilst a few have reported a brick. You have little to lose, however, and a brick, if it happens, would be likely recoverable. Scroll through the thread to find the file posted by Recognized Contributor Enewman. Download this file and flash via Odin
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2722660
I'd have also suggested flashing 4.1.1 via Odin, except there is a risk that your phone is already on the 4.3 bootloader and flashing an older would result in a brick.

I thought you could get into download mode easily enough before? If you have difficulties getting into download mode, you may try using a jig as you will need download mode to effect any of the various solutions. There is no reason to panic, however. Your phone is never bricked as long as you can get into download or recovery mode.

I love you. However, there's a problem...
It's wildly inconsistent when booting up. One time I got all the way to signing into my google account, but some times it reboots after getting at the swirling pink and blue samsung logo.

Now I can, apparently. Something changed. Now I can get into download mode, but not recovery mode. So, now, what's the next step?

Can you try using Odin to flash 4.3 via then instructions posted earlier in the thread or follow the steps in the thread advised by xXFl4sh? The Odin should do it though.

my phone shut off in the middle, and it said that it failed. Now I'm back to the "firmware upgrade encountered an issue, please connect to kies and try again" screen. I can still get into download mode. What now?
It apparently tripped my warranty bit too
and it shuts off within 3 seconds when on download mode. I read something about "sudden death syndrome". Is this it?

My phone on bootloop, and Odin is not working.

Hello. I'm not a developer or anything, but I do think that I know some things about technology. I have been trying to fix my GN2, AT&T. I have rooted it, and I did something bad, and now I don't even have access to recovery. Sorry if this question was posted some where else, but trust me. I've searched everywhere to find a way to fix my phone. Oh, and I do have access to download mode. Well, I did saw on a other post that you have to flash a ROM, via Odin to fix this. It did not work. It's my first time using Odin, but I put the .tar file in to the PDA section, and clicked start. (Of course with my phone plugged in to my laptop on download mode). After like 30 minutes, it failed. I tried some other USB ports, but it did not help. Please help me. I don't know what to do.

Ok, so I tried it. It successfully flashed the recovery. But when I went into the recovery, (Or tried to) it only showed some home, back, etc. buttons at the bottom of the screen. After that, it went back to the boot loop. Now I'm trying to flash a rom, see what happens. Please tell me if I did something wrong, or any tips would be appreciated.

So what version of firmware was your phone on before you whorked it up?
Need more if to figure out how to fix it.

No worries. Did you take a 4.3 backup before flashing 4.4.2 ?
If not, just ODIN back to 4.1.1 LJ2 like in Post #1. Then flash a custom recovery and you can then flash one of the 4.3 ROMS.
Oh look here's one ...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2704375
Flash the 1.75 version then scroll down and do the 2.0 Update.
You can do that after completing Post #2 and following these steps under Option #2 in Post #3
OPTION 2:
You will need to flash a custom recovery. I'm detailing a TeamWin Recovery Project (TWRP) install
Here is an explanation of TWRP and how to use it to flash the [ROM][4.3][Dec-2013] AT&T I317-UCUBMK6/MJ4 *Stock* Rooted

Here are other ways to install a custom recovery on your Android phone

INSTALLING TWRP 2.6.3.1
- Run Odin3 v3.07.exe
Download Link http://www.mediafire.com/download/772dlmuaxfgm0x2/Odin307.zip
- Put your Note 2 in Download Mode
Entering download mode is very simple. First you will need to turn off your device. Once it’s off, you need to press this button combination: volume down, power button and home button. Keep them pressed until the download mode shows up. Once you’re there, you will be required to press volume up to enter the download mode or volume down to cancel and reboot the device.
Plug into a RELIABLE usb port and a RELIABLE usb cable (preferably the white Samsung cable) and wait for it to show up in Odin (COM5 or something like that)
- Click the PDA slot in Odin and locate the openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.1-t0lteatt.img.tar that you downloaded.
The filename that goes into the PDA Slot is openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.1-t0lteatt.img.tar
MAKE SURE IN THE OPTION AREA ONLY AUTO REBOOT AND F.RESET TIME ARE CHECKED!!!
- Click START and wait. It will complete and reboot.
