I just upgraded from an Evo 4g.. lol yeah that old phone. Anyway I ran cm7 on that for ages and loved it. I recall tweaking it to its fullest potential back when it first came out and was interesting. Since then Iv fallen out of touch and dont have a clue where to start with this Gnex. I kept holding off my upgrade waiting for a great nexus device (on Sprint) that wasnt a samsung but alas my Evo bit the dust and I gave in to temptation.
Anyway, I am already in the process of doing all the research to get this rooted and running cm#, however I dont want to miss anything. Are there any tweaks I might want to perform before hand to improve the device? Real tweaks like unlocking features not tweaks like turning off animations to boost performance.
Iv been around the block and I already know how to search the forum. I have been doing it already, I just dont want to miss any of the major things that could have gotten lost in the archives thanks to the fact that this phone is already over a year old and not hot off the shelf.
TIA guys. Ahh yes the needed info, I am using the Gnex from Sprint and will most likely run cyanogen.
I should probably mention my laptop runs Ubuntu 13.04, not sure if thats going to cause issues with root or not. Back when I rooted the evo I no I needed windows. Lol linux to root linux whys it gonna be such a pain in the ars.
Thanks, much guys. After doing the research I found most of what I requested. I got found a good video on youtube on how to root the phone with linux and I already downloaded the latest CM10.1 M3 to use as my rom.
Still looking for any tweaks you guys might want to offer up.
Is there any custom launcher that makes the launcher disappear until I swipe up or touch the sides?
Thanks, again guys.
There are thousands upon thousands of apps that people use in various ways. Everyone has their own favorite setup. Some go for the minimal setups, some go for folders and widgets everywhere so they can get to their stuff quicker. Some like the stock apps, others like the customization offered in some of the market apps. It is hard to know what sort of things you would like without knowing a ton more information.
My advice is to look through threads where folks talk about some of their favorite and/or must have apps. There are also threads where folks show off their setups, and many discuss them and how they got them. You don't have to just look at what people are doing with their Galaxy Nexus, looking through other devices threads can also lead to some ideas and potential apps you will want.
About your custom launcher question, yeah there are a lot of different launchers that can do that. Nova, Apex, LMT, and probably many others that each have different ways of offering similar options. You may need the paid version of some to get some of the extra functionality, not sure what is locked in free.

Thanks, for the info about the locks. The apps part was a little off I was asking really about tweaks. Like going into the system files and unlocking features. No biggy I am about to load up cm in a few minutes and go from there. Thanks, again for the help.
this will be shot and sweet. i was a hardcore cm user on my evo, evo3d, and gs2, but since i found sourcery on my nexus, there is no going back. if you want tweaks sourcery has just about every tweak you can imagine. i love cm and those guys to an awesome job but sourcery just has more customization available and built in to the rom, no downloading of extra apps. just my 2 cents.

Maybe I'm being impatient but does it seem to anyone else that after the release of this bad boy, we haven't seen too many well known developers bringing custom rom "bad-ass-ness?" Not to knock the developers who HAVE shown up. They're doing a great job. It's just that I really expected the community to go nuts when we finally got this phone and I'm not seeing as much enthusiam as I've seen for other devices.
Any input on this?
Come back in a month or two, I'm sure you'll see a lot more going on.
I gotta say that since owning the Evo 3D and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 that there is a PRETTY good amount of development going on here...Look at the SGT 10.1.. I think as of right NOW the ET4G has more ROMS out and as for the Evo3D..Well it development took about a month or so before it started to pick up so..I guess I'll have to agree to DIS-agree!!..That's what its all about though right..?? Good Topic!!!
eh..it usually takes about a month after launch before development picks up.

We should actually pretty thankful for the progress thats already been made. Coming from the evo 3d on launch day, i was waiting weeks for recovery/root having to perma-temp root every time i rebooted my phone. we got root a couple days after the phone released. give it some time. its hard, but it'll come for sure.
i in no way am dissin the devs for the evo 3d, i appreciate everything theyve done for this community and all the time theyve put into helping everyone enjoy their phones to the fullest.
i really hope it does pick up because if this is all we have to look forward to im going back to my epic 4g. this sucks!!!

It took forever for the Sensation to get s-off and then start flashing custom roms.
CM7 slowly made it to the Sensation.

Yeah, but Google had released the device to all IO attendees about a month before release so plenty of developers had it in their hands before the official street date.

this.
and, remember, the Evo4g was sprint's huuggee flagship that carried android into the next level and into the spotlight so it drew a lot of attention, and, as a result, a lot of devs. also take into consideration that the devs need to have some way to get the device too. some are fortunate to shell out enough to buy it, some might not want it and be holding out for upcoming phones, or some might not be able to afford it (they're dev'ing is volunteer work so they might have other monetary priorities) and are waiting for their contract to end for the discount.
I, for one, would love to start developing. I have the time and im willing to be committed but i would have to start from the bottom and, frankly, its a long way up.
I stated this is another thread: You cant compare the e4gt to the evo 3d from launch day. For a while the evo 3d was locked and wasn't able to flash or get perm root for around a month. The 48 hours after it was unlocked there were at least 10 roms for it. We have been able to flash our e4gt pretty much since day one and it's been what? 2 weeks or so now? There are a lot less roms in those 2 weeks compared to the evo 3d the first 2 weeks it was unlocked and able to flash roms. So it does seem dev is going slower on our e4gt phones. I personally think it's because a lot of devs used upgrades to get the evo 3d and just cant afford to dish out the $500+ for a new one off contract. My guess is it will start to pick up once the price drops and/or used ones start to pop up on ebay/CL and phones are available to devs a little cheaper.

There's a lot of factors. The Evo 4g being given to devs a month before release meant that there was root, a stock rom compiled with root (for developers to play with) and various other things BEFORE the phone was released.
Here we don't have a stock rom out for people to play with. We have a stock rom tar and kernel to restore, but we don't have a flashable stock rom for developers to base off of. If anyone wants to build a rom, they have to compile from scratch.
Once we have a stock, rooted Rom, you'll see a lot of themers come out of the woodwork and start messing around.

Agreed that there are many factors I'm trying to get the deodexed tar to flash but it keeps hanging on me. I've tried multiple times, different cables etc.. it keeps either failing on me or just hanging up. I want the deodexed so I can start converting the theme I did for the evo 3d to our phone
Coming from the MoPho 4G, I'm in heaven here. It doesn't compare to when I had my Evo 4G, but there is still a lot going on. I'm sure in time more devs will show up. It was almost dead in the MoPho forums comparatively which is why I made the switch.
Another factor was a good deal of familiarity with HTC, their file structure and Sense. Many devs (who probably used their upgrades going from OG to 3D) had already played with Sense 3.0 long before the 3D was released. With this phone, gingerbread is not unique but TouchWiz certainly is. Of the custom roms out now, not one has done anything with TW. Not that's it's right or wrong...it's just a new animal. So, as more get the phone, more dabble in TW, etc. I'm certainly this will take off.
What is also nice is the phone was international long before it came to the US. Once people start visiting those forums and start porting we'll have a flood of great stuff.
Hi guys, I have been on this forums for quite a while even though I don't own a Nexus myself. I have been browsing through the development section every day and looking at all the ROMs etc..
I know that everything is open on the Nexus, all the sources, drivers, etc. I know that the advantages of having a Nexus is stock experience, with faster updates directly from Google. But what is the advantage of having an open phone as a user? I don't find much difference between the ROMs for Galaxy S II and the ROMs for the Galaxy Nexus. In fact the Siyah kernel, i think, has many many more features than the most popular kernel on this forums, the Franco kernel.
I am not trying to spark up anything over here. I just want to know what is the benefit of having such an open phone?

I would think that, but I can't see that translating to development. I mean, I must be blind to not be able to see the differences, but I really can't. I don't see any major improvements in the ROMs on the Galaxy Nexus

You answered your own question.
I already had 2 not Nexus Samsung phones and I will never make this mistake again. The lack of updates, the crappy skin that tries to look as the iPhone, etc.
In my experience, the builds from Google are much more stable, fast and reliable. And nothing in TouchWiz add anything that matters to me. To me Android is Nexus, I dont think I will build anything that is not Nexus again (but I really hope that HTC build the next one, I love the build quality of their phones).

Roms still don't work on galaxy s2 but everything works on aosp roms on nexus because it's open and drivers and everything is available...
bottom line aokp cm9 etc will give u a better user experience on nexus fewer bugs

Because your Galaxy Nexus comes with stock ICS out of the box. Sorry, but a custom ROM will never be as smooth and nice as the native out of the box OS.

OK, let me see if I can answer it. I'm not a developer, so take it with a grain of salt.
The phone I had before this was the Samsung Captivate. I bought it August 2010. At the time, it was one of the more advanced phones on the market. However, within about an hour of using it, I realized that the AT&T bloatware was a problem. Though the device had a lot of memory available, the app drawer was harder to navigate because of 15 different AT&T apps on the phone, most of which charged a monthly fee to do what Google's equivalent apps did for free. So, I had to root it.
Things were fine for a couple weeks, but then I noticed that there were several apps that I couldn't download because everyone was on Froyo and I was stuck on Eclair. There was no word when either samsung or AT&T was going to provide me with an update, so I had to take matters into my own hands and get a ROM from someone else. I'm not saying the devs didn't do a good job, but they were hamstrung by both AT&T and Sammy who were not giving them the tools they needed to do the job right the first time.
I should also point out that a lot of these problems were caused by AT&T's insistence that they have their own version of the Galaxy S that was different from everyone else's. Thankfully, all the carriers learned from that mistake.
Over the course of a year and 8 months, I tried at least a dozen different ROMs on my phone to either try to keep up with the changes in the market, or just to keep it from freezing. Even stock Gingerbread had problems, likely because it was rushed out. I finally found a stable build in a ROM that used ICS (ironically, ported from the GNex). So that meant, if not for the great work of Team ICSSGS, my Captivate would NEVER have been a stable phone. All those commercials about being a smartphone beta tester seemed to be designed with the Captivate in mind.
The point of all this: When it came time for me to get a new phone, I was considering waiting for the GSIII, but then Google offered the GNex off contract for $400, a not unreasonable price for the hardware at all, but what I was really paying for was getting off the treadmill. Now granted, at this point I've only had the phone for about a week, but it performs every function I need it to, and AT&T has no say in it. Samsung only had a say in the hardware. And that's how it should be, and honestly why I think Apple had such a marketing edge for such a long time. Apple told AT&T exactly where they can shove their customizations, and now we have Google doing the same, but not publicizing it enough.
TL;DR: Google experience and faster updates. But those are more valuable than you think.

You just answered yourself... great roms/builds like aokp would not be possible without the Android Open Source Project. Even after saying that the quality on aosp devices running aokp like the gnex and ns are miles ahead of say the sensation or something along those lines due to the very face the the nexus phones have open source readily available.

The open let's you literally change ans re-code any part of the device you want. A touch wiz phone cannot do this cause the code is closed.
Custom roms on other devices are not the same though you may think they are. Most of the time something doesn't work cause it relies on a closed touch wiz framework function that has to be reverse engineered or hacked, or usually never works at all..
You need the kernel source code to really make any legit custom rom, and often have to wait months foe it to be released.
With an open device, you literally can implement anything your imagination can cone up with. No bugs or work a rounds.
In my opinion, there are two major differences:
1. On a Nexus device, you are guaranteed a large developer community. The SGSII may have a large developer community, but that's because it's pretty much of the most popular phones. If you buy something like the Samsung Galaxy Infuse (which several of my friends have) then you won't have nearly as big a developer community as the one for the Galaxy Nexus.
2. It's much much easier to root/customize/flash a Nexus device than any other device. All you need is "fastboot oem unlock" and the phone opens up for you. No need for bootloader downgrading/rooting exploits/HTCDev/manufacturer restrictions. This phone is designed to be a developer device. Also, when you screw up a Nexus, it is much easier to solve problems. Phone not booting? Use CWM. Recovery borked? Fastboot. Fastboot not working? ODIN flash. Lots of fail-safes.
Thanks a lot guys for taking the time just to help me out
I got my gnex last wednesday. No regrets at all, it's an amazing phone. My next phone will definitely be another nexus.
Advantage of having a Nexus?
It is like Burger King, you can have it your own way.
I know I've made a few topics across XDA (and other forums) regarding my next phone, but after heavy consideration, I ordered a Galaxy Nexus, and the following case in black:
http://www.obostore.com/imak-colorf...slim-case-for-samsung-nexus-prime-p-3941.html
(I just really like the design - not concerned about protection level since I'm great with my tech)
Anyway, a few questions. I've used an AOKP ROM on my G2 with and without a tablet UI for a little bit, so I'm a little familiar with ICS and its features, but one thing I'm not sure of - what apps are specific to ICS and/or the Galaxy Nexus (other than Chrome and Google Wallet)?
Must-have mods/tweaks or ROMs? I haven't delved into it much, but so far, I'm liking ParanoidAndroid for the hybrid phone/tablet support and MIUI v4 for the looks, but looking for anything else is like a needle in a haystack - I have no idea which ROM is actually better/faster than the other.
Disadvantages of rooting the Galaxy Nexus? I know Play Movies doesn't work (but I'm not concerned since I don't use it), but does Wallet still work? Any other apps/functions affected?
Must-have accessories? I'm looking at getting an MHL adapter at some point, but I want to stay away from any docks (at least for the moment) just because of how expensive the official ones are, and not sure if there's any other such accessories I should go for.
Cool housing replacements? I've looked at tear-down videos and the Galaxy Nexus seems really simple to take apart, and I've seen white housing replacements, but I'm wondering if there are any other nice colors available.
Where can I get the official extended battery back/door? From what I understand, the case I'm getting won't fit the new battery door, but by the time I scrounge up the $50 or whatever the kit costs, I'll probably be bored of it and want a new one (not too big on having multiple cases, but I wouldn't mind another nice one just to have a little variety).
Any other things I need to know about the Galaxy Nexus? Don't tell me anything gaming-related - not too concerned both because I'm not a fan of touchscreen gaming, and I intend on getting a used Xperia Play for gaming purposes only.
I forgot to mention that I bought the GSM version off the Play Store.
Anyway, I did a little research, and it seems like everybody prefers the recent JB ROMs - are the JB features/enhancements really that good?

Welcome to the world of rooting
All your questions stem from an assumption / insecurity regarding rooting and trying out things.
There are not that many ROMs out there, learn nandroid, keep a stable copy on the PC. And just try these things out - it's so easy to jump around on ROMs (I've tried 2/3 in one day) that within a few tries you would settle down with something.
Lot of it is subjective, but one thing that remains constant - its safe to root. just follow the guide properly, and do not screw up installing CDMA roms on GSM and other goof ups like that.
happy rooting. (and you can unroot as you probably already know - so its not a one way street)
but then, once u discover the charms - it actually is a one way street
p.s the movies work with root now I believe. I'vent tried but read about it somewhere.

Yeah, I'm pretty familiar with rooting and whatnot and have no issues with it, I was just wondering if there's some specific exception against it. And I may just load a few ROMs onto the device and try them out before I put my SIM in and start using it as my phone. Any recommendations (other than something JB-based)?

and as you noticed, paranoidAndroid is just awesome (based on CM9. its hard to go to any other ROM after the customizations this one offers in using the real estate of your screen)

then franco kernel, supposed to be one of the fastest and most efficient kernels out there

During my brother's birthday our parents offered us our very first android and smartphone, he took the HTC one X and I got the Samsung Galaxy S3 since both of us wants variety and preference and they both have excellent performance since they are on the top of the market but recently he has lag/slow issues with his HoX and I can't help but just watch from a distance (literally since he lives in the middle-east and I'm in south-east asia atm) since he is using Sense UI and I'm stuck with TouchWiz UI I can't help him anymore further than this so I'm making this thread.
I admit the SGS3 had lag and sluggish issues too at first that's why I got it fixed when I asked for help from the SGS3 forums section, where I removed S voice and turned off some unnecessary options that I never use (kies, nfc, account sync, motion activation, etc). Remember we both have the international versions of our respective phones and we both use SIM - free from any carrier and we are also non-rooted users. Is there any tips to make his phone faster? All I could do was to constantly advice him to keep clearing the ram and turn off apps he isn't using in the task manager since clicking the home button hides the apps in the background.
Even then he is having lag/slow issues, please get back to me asap so I can relay the necessary information to help him enjoy his HoX. Please do not make this into a SGS3 vs HoX comparison thread, please. I am sick and tired of fanboys from both sides debate endlessly. I am just here asking for help since he's 16 and never used an online forum before so I'm here on his behalf. I also told him to read and follow up this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1603360 but is there anything more we can do?
Your first sentence made it a comparison thread. You could have gotten better responses without the needless SG3 promo.
On the unlikely chance that you are up to something other than an attempt at another comparison thread, I would say that he should flash a Rom with less Bells and whistles.
I don't seem to have this magic lag that only SG3 folk keep talking about.

Rooting and flashing a ROM might do it, there is an add on called Ultra Smooth Rosie (its included in the ViperX ROM) that eliminates the micro lag generated by the Sense 3D animations.
However, before doing that (not sure if your brother doesnt want to mess with rooting/custom ROM s) ask him to install Apex Launcher from the Play Store as well as Home Switcher app.
With Apex Launcher I felt an increase in speed and completely eliminated the small lag I had with Sense. You might want to try it with your SGS3 as well.
Home Switcher app lets you switch between lauchers easily, in a way that you can use Sense or Apex at your convenience.

I wasn't making a comparison thread and I had no intention to do so, I felt compelled to add a background story since most people on this part of the forum will acknowledge that I am an S3 user since my forum signature states so and they would think that I am lying about my brother's HoX which I am truthfully not however I appreciate the honest remarks but I do not want to start anything with you. The second paragraph was a hint to the other readers if there is anything similar that I can do for my brother's HoX like what I did with my SGS3 like turning off some settings that are factory default on which might cause the lag/slow issues.

I am using the Nova launcher with my S3 will the Nova run with his HoX as well? since I'm not familiar with the Apex launcher but do thank you for the advice however if the launchers don't work I'll try to look up the roms you mentioned via root and I will ask him if he is willing to root regarding the risks of it. If anyone else has any ideas please do post further, thank you now all I can do is wait for him to get back from school since there is a 4 hour difference in time zones

Can you please elaborate by what do you mean sense is heavy?

The performance has greatly improved in the soon to be released 2.xx roms, tell him to wait a few weeks until the update is released

Sense needs a lot of power and lags because the CPU (on stock ROMs) doesn't ramp up fast enough.
I'd just flash a ROM onto it. Mine runs 100% lag free now and smooth like the iPad, iPhone 4S and SGS III

Is that the stock rom or the flash rom which requires rooting?

You mean root it? which rom are we talking about?
P.S. thank you everyone for so much help, now all I have to do is wait for him and damn it I haven't seen him online yet due to time zone difference. Going to wait on the replies for the quotes I did then going to call it a day
As others have said, other launchers are lighter than sense, so will give a percieved speed boost. You will not be able to use the sense widgets though. They only work with sense.
This may get him through until the 4.0.4 updates start rolling out - hopefully just a few weeks.
I'd avoid killing background apps and trying to manage things manually. Android is very good at managing stuff itself - you can't do better. If you are always trying to close/ kill apps the.phone will just start them up from scratch when it needs them - which takes more power and battery. Leave them alone!
If you go down the root/ Rom route - please be careful. You can break the phone if you make a mistake. You will also lose access to official updates - you will need to rely on xda for roms and updates (though this is likely to be faster!)

Flashing a rom is not extremely complicated but one needs to be sure to understand all the steps needed and why they are needed coming from a galaxy s2 myself it took me a week to read all the relevant threads as it needs some extra steps compared to flashing a Samsung phone.
If your brother is not into getting technical I would recommend he install apex or nova launcher (they are basically the same). The difference was amazing for me. In this way you he can wait for the next official update. It's true he will lose the ability to use sense widgets but there are very good alternative. There is even an app in this forum that enables you to use the iconic htc clock widget with apex or nova. Also, htc wallpapers are still available.

If you want it now you will need to root but the update will be released around aug 18th for international roms, so you won't need to root then and keep your warranty
After a long time staying loyal to the Nexus line I just picked up an S3. Main reason was the 44$ price tag and the fact I could stick a 64GB micro SD in here.
So far I think the phone is ok but WOW does their bloatware make the phone sucks. I really want my old Android OS back and wil be reading all the guides I can about flashing it.
Anyone else gotten one? Anyone flashes it yet?

Just root it and freeze/delete the apps you don't need. Stay away from AOSP, you'll get used to Touchwiz and love what it offers over those buggy ROMs.

I may try and find someone in town with a custom rom S3 and try it out. I REALLY miss my CM roms on my Nexus S.
You are right though, there are some great features bundled in the touchwiz OS but a ton I simply want gone. I simply hate the layout of a lot of the included programs like the SMS, calendar and phone.

If it's CM you're after, that's definitely available for your new phone. The device code you're looking for is d2att, i.e. this is the download page you'd want.
Of course, you might want to root the device first (the most applicable image for your device would probably be the Rogers one), and put a new recovery image on there - I suggest TWRP for that, though if you're used to CWM that's certainly an option as well.
Welcome to the wide world of the S3, and have fun!
If you want AOSP / AOKP get Task650 Roms. Hes has a 100% perfect 4.1.2, and a great stable 4.2.1 ROM out. Check in original android. Been using it for a long long time on both the S3's in our household and everyones super happy. Super fast and no crashes or problems. TW was just too slow.
His Rom's are for AT&T.

AT&T's model is the exact same as the Bell, Rogers (and Fido), and Telus
Man you guys are all so welcoming with the wonderful links. Thank you so much.
So im surprised no one else has chimmed in as a new fido owner. I must say their cost is a little high for the phone which might be the reason why. 250$ on a 2 year plan for a phone that is free most elsewhere aint cheap. Luckily for me I got a great deal on it (44$ total cost!)
Does anyone have some warranty related info or links they could send me? I have read about an hours worth and cant seem to gather a clear picture. From what I can tell theres are three methods to rooting this device.
Also, any info on what to backup in order not to brick this phone?
This phone is quite a bit more work than the Nexus I had earlier. None the less I am pretty sure ill have tons of fun!

LMAO. Touchwiz is complete garbage and really slows the S3 down. I used it for a couple of weeks and could not stand all the Samsung bloat and the Samsung replacement apps (phone, messaging, etc.).
Wiped it and I'm running CM 10.1 nightly (1/13) and the phone is a beast now. Super fast, with the best possible UI, i.e. the way Android is meant to be!
Yes there are a few bugs but they're nothing major and at this point CM 10.1 is definitely good enough to be a daily driver. DO NOT hesitate to drop TW crap for CM!
