When i shut off my phone, it thinks its plugged in the charger and when i remove the battery and put it back it in, it reboots the phone. Also when i plug the charger in and remove it, the phone thinks its still plugged in charger.
Is my phone broken or is it something with the software?
Check inside your charging port. Use a flashlight to see. You may have a bent pin. It is 99%not a software issue.

yup its the charging port. there is a pin standing up on the right side inside the port. I am not too sure how to fix(push it back maybe?) it but I im gonna see if sprint will fix it for free or if I can maybe open up the phone myself (no warranty)
thanks for the help though
You can gently use a tooth pick to pull it forward if it isn't pressed against the back wall. If you have access to dental tools it is much easier. You can find similar items in a hobby shop in the sculpting section. If you don't want to go to that trouble, you will have to replace the port. Hope you are good with a soldering iron, if not, you can look up mobiletechvideos on google. Sprint may fix it for free but will likely charge you 50 or more. Mobiletechvideos charges less to replace the bad port.

Make sure battery is out of phone before you fiddle with port.

I just received my replacement phone from Sprint. I go to boot it up and see that it is saying USB connected and just saying it over and over, like I am plugging it in and unplugging it. This was pure stock. I go to put Cyanogen Mod back on it and it actually stopped it for a while, but it keeps coming back occasionally. The only way to stop it is to plug a charger up to it and then it stops.
Thanks,
Jaculop

Go back to stock and bring it back to sprint... seems as though lots of these phones have been having this same issue... make sure no apps are installed at all when you bring it to them so they can't blame it on an app...

i had this problem also, drives me crazy, The worst thing is this will eat my battery. All i can do is to hide the notification bar (possible if using adw launcher), but when i open an app, the notification bar appears again.
Done anything like back to stock ec05, repartition etc, etc. But now im on MTD and at first the problem with usb is still there, but now it is completely gone, wtf

But recently it just go away itself
I had this problem when I first got my epic (bought it used on eBay). I tried blowing in the port and stuff. Eventually the problem went away and hasn't come back.

uh, not to scare you or anything, but you don't clean any ports on a cell phone with a damp cloth, it will do harm to it. take a toothbrush that has never been used before and gently brush the port. then blow into the port to remove debri (small particles), then try it.

I already have another phone on my service. is there a way to get to stock without using a USB cable? Like, flash to older rom, and get an OTA? can i do that without the phone on my contract?... ive been searching for answers all night... I got it un bricked so far, and im on stock EH06 right now.

i'm trying to isolate the problem,
interesting thing is, i found when i plug a mini-usb to micro usb converter (just the converter, not connected to anything), the notification seems stopped, but when i unplug the converter, it shows again.

seems not, i use the cable to charge my Desire HD with no problem..
I'm opening the converter apart, it is just mini-usb 2 cables soldered to the maybe VBUS and ground micro usb, so this is a charger cable, the data pin was shorted, maybe this is why the notification stopped ?

You have to be really good at soldering tho the solder points are small and really close to other solders so if u slip and cross the solders u short the logic board so don't attempt unless ur good with a soldering iron and comfortable doing it

It's had that same exact issue. Folks at Ghost Armor got my Nexus damaged and thus they paid for those damages and I had to receive a replacement.
But, you may want to remove the battery for a bit and try cleaning the contacts of the charging port with a small micro fiber cloth then re-insert the battery to see if that might work.

Denatured Alcohol a tooth brush and a larger pin. Use the denatured alcohol with the tooth brush and just scrub inside the port ALOT don't worry it won't damage your phone. Then scrape the pins with the pin so the copper shows through good. I work at sprint as a technician and that's how I fix 90 percent of LD in charging port.
This happened to me. I had to replace the whole micro usb charging port flex cable. Reason being that after that itbstopped charging completely.
The part is usually like $11 and youbcan find instructions on youtube. Simple repair if you ask me.

Just make sure when buy a replacement cable. If you have a GSM phone you need a v1.5 variant. I learned the hard way and was sent a different version that would not allow connection to PC and would only charge at the USB rate even when plugged into its AC adaptor!

Out of the blue I noticed my S3 was charging very slowly, it even was losing a charge while it was plugged in while I was using it. I figure it had something to do with my custom ROM so I reflash, still same outcome. The battery was still holding a good charge, so I figured it was something else. I then went out and bought a new charger, which came with a micro usb cord to see if that helped. Plugged in the new charger while using my old micro usb cord, still same outcome. Then used the new micro usb cord and old charger, charging went back to normal, problem solved! I would of never thought that the cord would malfunction from day to day use after such a short lifespan. Moral of the story, check your cords if you experience the same problem, it could save you some time and money!
Yup, I experienced the same thing! Slow charging, losing charge while plugged in, and horrible battery life. Once I changed the cable it went back to normal. That's also what I've been recommending people to check when they report similar symptoms

This is true, but not that helpful when the USB cable is bad, please read the thread before posting bud.
I had the same thing happen with a friends USB cable over the weekend. Same phone same charger took 2 hours to get 18% (with fast charge enabled) plugged in with my cable, took 1.5 hours to charge the other 80%. Got the cord from here and all is good again. Wonder why this happens to some of these cords...

I believe is a short or break in the cable that makes it think its plugged into a usb port on a computer.
Its been a while so hope im remembering this right, but when you use the wall outlet it connects two of the pins together where if plugged into a computer it does not. The phone detects this and allows a faster charge.
I remember in the past people would solder the pins together permanently (on the cable not the phone) so it would always charge faster.
I believe thats how it worked anyway. So if these have broken or shorted in some way it may cause that behavior. Hope that made sense.

Interesting, I'm not that techy at all. I did try plugging it into both computer USB port, and wall charger and neither gave it a proper charge.
It may be the same scenario but with different wires within the cable. Hard to say for sure.
In the end though, cables go bad just like everything else. I think many dont realize how much they really can abuse them!

Consider this option. If you are even remotely tech savvy, repairing teh S4 is not terribly difficult. Just take your time and be careful. The bottom control board that houses the USB port pops right out. The part can be swapped.
You also might just have something stuck in the USB port. A peice of dirt, a tiny stone, etc...anything that can get into your pocket can get into that port and foul it. So it might be a matter of cleaning the port well.
Also the contacts inside could just be bent so they aren't making good contact. Meaning its' all wired properly and everythign functions, but only when the cord is held in at the perfect angle. This can be corrected, but how depends on how its' bent.
