Good Morning
I make this guide because i dint find any similar thread here..
When you set up a vpn connection Android system force you to create a pin or pattern security lock for lockscreen. This is for security reasons in case you lost your phone. But many users want to use VPN without security lock.
In this guide I will describe how to remove security lock when using VPN.
This guide will work on any GN2 Rom and also in all other android phones
What you will need:
1)Rooted Phone
2)Root explorer or any other file editor
3)Sqlite Editor or Sqlite Manager
Before you proceed make sure you make a nandroid backup.Im not responsible for any damage.
Steps:
1)First of all configure your VPN Connection
2)Open your file Explorer and browse /data/system/locksettings.db
3)Open it with sqlite editor and choose locksettings
4)Choose lockscreen.password.type and press "Edit record" button.
5)Change 131072 value to 0 (131072 may differ from security type)
The result must be this:
6)Thats it
It must be applied without reboot
PS:If you want to restore it do the same steps and make "0" value to "131072"
How about doing the same in non-rooted phones?
Thanks for the guide
I was looking for a solution to the lockscreen security the other day while setting up a VPN to my home PC
Another alternative for rooted users not wanting to edit the sqlite db is to use something like the VPN Root app

As far as I know, you cannot modify these secure, locked down settings on a phone that isn't rooted.
Works like a charm! Good guide. Now I can set up my work/home VPN without any enforced screen lock :good:
The same issue - how to remove forced lock screen on Galaxy S5?
It's extremely annoying and stupid I need to use PIN instead fingerprint sensor which is the Galaxy s5's main feature when I have my VPN set up. Please somebody tell us how to get rid of forced lock on GS5. Thank you!
Can't get this to work in Kitkat. SQLite Database Editor can't open locksettings.db. Any ideas?
Edit: Disregard. I think I am using the wrong program. Have to download SQLite Editor not SQLite Database.

Worked great.
the method works, but after I reboot, when I enter VPN screen is aks me for "password for credential storage"... how can I solve? thanks in advance
Thanks for the guide
Not work on kitkat, value is 0 but security lock is...
Tapnięte z mojego S Advance ☺
In 4.4 there is no such file
Code:
/data/system/locksettings.db
.. any ideas?
In 5.0.2 the file is there but is empty.

Are you referring to the notifications on lock screen?
If so, they are super annoying.

Would this enable Pandora to be controlled from lock screen?
Nice!
Any idea on how to remove the quick connect and sfinder buttons from the notification panel?

Hello,i had before a Galaxy S5, LG G3, and it worked with the SQlite editor procedure , but when installing SQlite on the M8 (grant supersu acces and all of that) it says that no database found (attached a screenshot below) , the same thing happens on my Moto G 2014, so i thought it can't be that i have the S-ON, i tried also changing SElinux to permissive but no luck :crying:
I solved this :good:
install headsoff from google play store. it works for me to disable heads up notification in my note 3.

Hi,
I am trying to get multi user feature to work on my HTC 10 because this is not enabled on the version I have (pre-ordered, UK, no carrier).
I rooted the device following this post. Everything went ok.
Using BuildProp Editor I added on my build.prop the following lines:
Code:
fw.max_users=3
fw.show_multiuserui=1
After rebooting I see the option Users on Settings. I go ahead and add new user, it prompts "set up user now?". If I say yes, it switches to a new lock screen. However, when I try to unlock the screen, it says "Unfortunatly, Setup has stopped." with an OK button that when pressed just gives me the same message. No other function is available other then give OK, volume keys and power button. To get out of the message loop I need to reboot phone. After reboot, I see the new user that I tried to create on the list of user but If I try to enter I get the same Setup error.
Has anyone tried this?
I know that similar thing can be done via a Xposed module. But I would like to have this sorted without having to go there for now.
Running rooted 'stock' Android 6.0.1 (1.30.401.1) on HTC 10.
Cheers
--------------------
SOLUTION:
1 ) I edited the build.prop and removed the lines I added to get back to original.
2) I installed Xposed and a module XposedMultiUsersModule. This gave-me again the the Users option on the Settings. But trying to add new user gives the same error on Setup as before.
3) I edited the build.prop. Change the line ro.setupwizard.mode=OPTIONAL to ro.setupwizard.mode=DISABLED.
Then you can add new user and everything will be ok. You just need to add your google account and setting a few things up manually as necessary for your use. I do believe that I could have done the step 3 without steps 1 and 2. But I just don't want to test that now.
So far, no issues with internet connectivity. I'm happy.
Hope it helps!
UPDATE: If one tries Guest instead of creating a New User, you can use it. It even allows you to keep yours application settings and data after reboot. However, I am having lots of problems regarding losing internet connectivity on the the Guest account when I switch back to Owner profile. That is a problem because I would like to have app running on the Guest account that need to be online.
If there was a way to clone another account or bypass the android Setup application I think I could manage to get what I want.
SOLUTION:
1 ) I edited the build.prop and removed the lines I added to get back to original.
2) I installed Xposed and a module XposedMultiUsersModule. This gave-me again the the Users option on the Settings. But trying to add new user gives the same error on Setup as before.

Hi,
thanks for the updates. do you think it would work by just editing the build.prop file with the line modifications ?
add :
fw.max_users=3
fw.show_multiuserui=1
change :
ro.setupwizard.mode=OPTIONAL
to
ro.setupwizard.mode=DISABLED
Thanks !

I happen to have the same problem lately... If you try to read the key/value, it's gonna return the value/key value but, no registry is created.

See if i read the value the operation says read but if i try to add registry it says no specific key added, no change to phone registry were made and i am not understanding why this is happening..
I have had imports fail but the Edit Registry option works. And vice versa. Depends on the device too. On the Nokia models I can edit almost anywhere just by installing and enabling interop unlock. If I use my 950 XL or a 650 which have some added security features it becomes hit or miss. Even if I push the generic ndtk cab to the device. Other times I have to do a hard reset before I can edit the registry where I need. Usually after a recent update or build version release.
EDIT: I just looked at your pics. You are trying to add Sirepuser to the system control key but why are you adding it that way? I am assuming the template is not working? Also why did you need to toggle Restore NDTKsvc? Was editing working before that and then stopped? Lastly which device model are you using Interop Tools on?
I get what you mean. Must be interop tools can add keys/values there using the template but can't read them.

Can you edit or create keys/values inside HKCU? Registry editor shows that you "created" the key/value you want but, once you look at it with the browser, the value or key created is not there...
It seems the key or values under certain areas of the registry are either not supported or not accessible for read from InteropTools.
Edit: If I enable root access after unlocking the boot loader on my 1520 I can see the key values under HKLM\BCD00000001. Must be related to a plolicy interop tools cannot run past, and unlocking the security policies allows it to be unrestricted.

Ok agree what you say this means interop tool can't read and write these keys but they are present then why i cant get cmd access.
I have no idea. That's a whole other topic...have you read thoroughly how to do it from the forums? What steps have you done?

Yes, but via ssh. CMD access from the IT app requires elevated privileges and some other tweaks. I can open that part of InteropTools with root enabled without error but was unable to type. You would need to check with gus33000 about that. I just use cmd over ssh for now.

You should only need to toggle the Restore NDTKsvc if you suddenly lose the ability to edit the registry after successfully getting access the first time. I have had this happen after an update or if system settings updated...
The registry browser has limited access to the registry, it can't enumerate every key, but that totally doesn't mean they aren't here, that's why you have a registry editor section in the page to actually add values where you can't see anything, in your screenshots you wrote fine to those values, so it worked.

Did you set a custom password in interop tools and did you get cmd.exe and cmd.exe.mui via ssh on the device?
You also can't use a client on the device itself.

got success
finally got success access cmd via ssh.thanks everyone for helping me..so the conclusion i got:-
first some keys are protected so can't be access by interop tool but can be edit by registry editor.
Second you have to set custom password through ssh account manager but i don't know why system console in interop tool is not working but you can access cmd via ssh if you have done all the steps correctly and i finally i know where i was missing all the time it was not registry as i was thinking it is not present the thing i was missing was i tried to connect to ssh client on my device it didn'tworked but when i tried to connect to cmd with another device via ssh it worked and all credit goes to @gus33000 and @nate0 who helped me...Thank you:good:
Hi,
Somehow I managed to forget my screenlock pattern (freshly changed) on my OnePlus 5T and it seems like my enrolled fingerprints are useless now. I need some help to recover access to my phone (preferably without factory reset).
This is the current situation of my phone:
- Phone Rooted
- TWRP Custom Recovery
- USB Debugging enabled
- WiFi On/Data and GPS OFF
- Currently logged in with my google account on the phone, but can't access it over the google account (i kind of disabled history and other features in my google acc).
- Also "Unknown Sources" is enabled on my phone.
If there is any way to recover the password via ADB, or to unlock the Data, that would be just awesome...
Thanks for any help.

Hey Bud,
I had a similar issue when I restored a nandroid backup and the password had been glitched so that I couldn't sign into my phone anymore.
Anyways here's a shortened version of a solution I found here: https://forums.oneplus.com/threads/fix-wrong-pin-pattern-when-restoring-twrp-nandroid-backup.452384/
1. Boot into TWRP
2. Open the file manager inside of TWRP and delete (or rename - they get restored whenever the phone is booted so deleting them does no harm) the following files inside "/data/system":
-password.key
-pattern.key
-locksettings.db-wal
-locksettings.db-shm
-locksettings.db
(they might not all be there but whichever ones you can find, delete/rename)
3. Reboot your phone and you should no longer have any kind of pin/pattern on your lockscreen
4. Re-setup your password and don't forget it this time!
Hope this helps :good:

Hi, thanks.
I've been checking that post, but something didn't quite match. The following files are available on my phone ( /data/system):
-gatekeeper.password.key
-gatekeeper.pattern.key
-locksettings.db-shm
-locksettings.db
-locksettings.db-wal
So, as you can see, there are two files with the "gatekeeper" prefix. Are those two supposed to be also deleted (renamed)? Did you have them when you did your fix?
Thanks.

Hey man,
When I fixed my issue I didn't touch those - worst comes to worst just rename the files that were on the list I gave and leave the other 2. If it doesn't work then you can try renaming the files you found from my list as well as the two you have highlighted in red.
Give that a try

Just did the steps (including the gatekeeper. prefixed files) - I just renamed them, so I can revert back. Indeed I was able to get my phone unlocked, but everything is blank. Only a wallpaper, status bar and Nav Bar. No apps, no app drawer, nothing. I can access the Settings, but that doesn't help much... (except that I can set a new password).
Going in Settings -> Apps, shows me all the apps, which is good. But I can't see them on screen.
Also, the following are happening:
- Settings -> Apps -> Defaults: Nothing set up for "Home App". And there is a blank grey menu when I click on it.
- Settings -> Apps -> Application List -> OnePlus Launcher: clicking on Open By Default, crashes the Settings Menu.
Is it possible that I did something wrong here?

Possibly?
When I followed the method in the link in my previous post I had no issues - I just had to setup a new lock method.
It may have been the gatekeeper files - when I did this method previously I didn't touch those as I didn't know they were there
Do you have a backup from TWRP by any chance that you could restore?

Restored the gatekeeper files, but no success. Same behaviour. I have a backup, but is only a "initial backup" - sort of how the phone was at first. I was too dumb to do a backup after I set up everything.
It seems my only way now would be to do a factory reset and lose all data.
Unless there would be a way to recover the password from the database? I know is encrypted and salted, but that salt also has to be stored somewhere... maybe there would be a way to revert that hash into a pattern? grr, this is extremely frustrating.

I apologise for possibly making matters worse whilst trying to help but this is beyond my understanding of TWRP's capabilities
It might be worth restoring your previous backup even if it is blank and then setting up your phone again. During the setup choose an option that should be something like: "Restore from the cloud" which will allow google to restore most of your app data. However, your internal storage will be completely wiped . Once that's all good and setup then definitely make a backup - it's a good habit to get into and will save you a lot of hassle in future.
I don't know if there's anything else I can suggest you to do,
hope this doesn't take up too much time - I personally know how infuriating it is to spend hours on something when there's no easy solution. You'd be better starting from a clean flash of OOS.
Sorry, there's nothing else I can think of to help you out
Best of luck bud.

I'm grateful for your effort. It offered a solution. It just got more complicated than expected. Probably the last Oxygen update patched some security issues - which is not bad after all (it's just bad for me NOW).
Personal data is encrypted with the screen lock pattern, so your only choice is a factory reset
I'm trying to find information about a multimedia system i have installed in my Skoda, the sticker on the device says CNT100, which is manufactured by CarNeTek (device page - https://www.carnetek.com.tw/products_detail/15.htm, not sure if they are the manufactures or just a reseller).
The company which sell and install it locally are not willing to share any information about the device, and of course are not willing to unlock it (to install applications from the play store, tweak configuration, etc.).
On the device there are 6 dip switches (which i couldn't figure out what they control), and no visible button (to get into recovery), i can get to the play store, and install applications - but as soon the installation is completed - they get uninstalled (there is a list of application that are not automatically uninstalled).
The launcher looks like a custom local version, there is no way to get into the settings page and the notification bar cannot be clicked (or dragged down), if i click multiple times on the menu - i get a dialog for some configuration, where i'm prompt for password (the dialog has a random number on it - which i suspect is used to generate correct password).
is anyone familiar with this device? or can suggest a way to unlock it?
(attached images of the device and the boot screen)
Hey mrtowel!
Trying to figure out that as well.
You said "if i click multiple times on the menu"
Where is this menu? possible to send a photo of that?
I'm talking about an Israeli version
Seems to be customized by [email protected]
sorry but i was wrong describing the way to get to the password dialog, on the home screen - there is a weather widget, showing the weather on the left side and the clock on the right side, multiple taps on the weather allows you to reboot the device, while multiple taps on the clock gets you to the password dialog.
I made some progress with the device - still working on getting it unlocked completely, let me know if you want more details.

Hey!
Just found that new to me. Pushed 6 times on the clock of the weather widget and got a prompt for the password. I receive a 9 digit number with that.
Also found that if you do the same on the temperature indication, you'll be prompt for device restart.
So that's a progress.
Anyways, I will be happy to hear from you, what progress you have made on this.
Will send you a PM.
Did someone have any success?

try to get to app store (in case it is installed) through one of the installed apps using the 'rate us' option, you can also try and push a play store link through bluetooth, if it works - the android system will launch the play store app, and you'll be able to setup your account.
Once you get to the play store - download and install Googel app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox&hl=en) this will let you ask google assistant to 'Open Display Settings' (in my case this option let me enable the drag down menu, where i could easily access the settings and other stuff).
hope that helps
?

Also how can I cancel the restrictions of using apps during drive?
Thanks

Hey @mrtowel any change you can share some more details?
I tried connecting to the USB with my laptop to try doing some adb commands but it did not detect anything
I'm also wondering about the dip switch
and how to get the password bypass
Would really like to hear some more details if you can share please?
Just came here to see if can recall my steps from last time i played with the device (i kind of gave up, as it worked well with what there is, but recent update made it work really slow).
turns out there is a post on facebook (https://facebook.com/groups/gilcar/permalink/729881061134680/?comment_id=729883497801103), i'm going to try and build some utility to generate unlock codes (last time, i managed to get to an adb terminal, but i wasn't aware of the `pm hide` option to disable the installation blocker ****).
will post updates here if i get some progress
For anyone interested, attached the list of whitelisted apps. a jar to generate the code to enable tech mode and how i disabled the installation blocker
For the jar - you would need to get your device Wifi MAC address (see old post from 2019 on how to enable the navigation bar), which can be retrieved from the 'אודות' section. (run the jar by running 'java -jar codeGen_jar.jar 00:11:22:33:44:55' - replace the numbers with your device mac address)
Wifi must be enabled - before the next step
To get to the code, hit few clicks on the clock widget in the home screen would prompt you with a password (if the code generator matches your version of connect-it (if it isn't - see bypass admin mode workaround below), the codes would match), enter the unlock code (admin mode result from the codeGen output) and move to the apps section - you would see 'tech mode' application.
Wifi must be connected before the next step
On the tech mode application - you would have another code (tech mode result from the codeGen) enter it - and it would open a page to enable adb remote server (you must be connected to a wifi network to get it to work).
Connect to the adb using a remote shell from another device (or a laptop), to the specified IP on port 1917 (note that most mobile tethering options won't work due to networking limitations). If you don't have an accessible wifi network - see Wifi Workaround below
From adb, run the following:
to disable the application which blocks installations: pm hide com.ituran.installationblocker
Disable updates: pm hide com.ituran.systemupdateservice
Disable blocking applications while driving: pm hide com.ituran.driveusagemonitor
Tips:
While in admin mode, you can see all installed applications, and pin them to the start page of the home screen, recommend to pin Play Store app (as it is usually hidden)
Don't try to enable or enter 'Guest mode' (i tried it, and the device went into boot loop)
The codes generated are date sensitive, so either generate new ones if you won't use them in the same day, or change the device date.
Wifi Workaround : a workaround can be to install modified version of 'Remote ADB Shell' (attached) on the device, save it to your mobile phone, and push it to the device through bluetooth, this version is the same version as 'Remote ADB Shell' from the play store - only names 'Spotify' which will keep it installed on the device, after installation, run it and connect to 127.0.0.1 on port 1917 instead.
Bypass admin mode workaround : while Admin Mode enables you to view the hidden applications, in the above process, it mainly gives you the option to run the tech mode app. if the code for the admin mode isn't working for you, install 'Amaze file explorer' (attached - it was renamed to bypass the installation blocker) by pushing it through bluetooth.
You can find more details on this facebook post (not mine - but i used details from this thread to figure out how to disable the application from ADB)
Enjoy and drive safely.
