I'm not new to flashing ROMs on my Evo, however your forums here are a little more cryptic. My son rooted his phone and flashed CWM and a Cyan Rom. He would like to return to rooted stock. Can someone point me in the direction of the latest OTA Stock Rooted Rom for the Samsung Galaxy S Epic II 4G? He apparantlly followed some video tutorial yada yad yada. I realize ROMs are probably flashed thru the recovery console, is flashing similar to flashing on an Evo from that point? (Boot to recovery -> work your way to Flash from Zip ...)
Thanks in advance.

Here you go
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433101
Instructions are on that page, just make sure you use the full restore, and not the preserve data or you can brick. At the current point we don't have a kernel built from source yet, because of this, you must flash back to stock rooted EL29 via ODIN OC or you will brick. I highly suggest you read my thread in my signature because flashing anything ICS for this phone can be extremely dangerous and will brick your phone if you aren't sure what your doing.
Just to be sure you are looking at the right thread, please go to settings>about phone. Make sure model number is SPH-D710. I only say this cause I haven't heard of a Cyan ROM, and (not trying to be a jerk), most people refer to this phone as the epic 4g touch. You got something weird up there, and there are at least 20 different versions of this phone (galaxy s2).

Yes, that is what I meant by Cyan.
Thanks for the links and tips guys, I will check it out tonight.
Short version is this is the Galaxy 2 from Sprint, the one with the long bastardized name. Took forever to find this forum cause I was looking for something closer in name.
Yes it is the bastardized sprint Samsung galaxy s2. Word to the wise stay on this forum. Any other galaxy s2 forum especially international will have a huge possibility of turning the phone into a nice little paper weight. I have to say thanks for taking the time to find out. We have had a bunch of people come through here with paper weights wondering what happened because they didn't bother to read

Is there a flashable zip or whatever you guys use on the Epic somewhere that I can just copy to the sd card vs going thru ADB etc as in the link from above? The phone is already rooted, I don't want to lose root, just load a stock rooted rom on the phone.
Thanks.

Just read the entire OP twice. It's really simple. It will return you back to stock rooted gingerbread EL29
Edit: just realized its the same link. This is not adb. It's an odin one click package. Basically download the file and press a button and you're done

I would follow the posted thread as.. a.) It is the safest way since lots of people have been bricking their phone via flashes b.) This will return the phone to the stock ROM, but it will remain rooted.
Thanks guys(gals?) I'll be trying this tomorrow!

Ok, reporting back.
First we tried the 'don't overwrite data' option, everything appeared to be ok until the phone rebooted. It sat on the 4G splash screen in a continual restarting state for about ten minutes. We tried flashing that twice. After that we tried flashing the factory restore with root option, that worked just fine.
Thanks again for the input.
Now he'll have to restore all of his desired apps, but that's his problem, since I told him not to root in the first place. LOL.
Cheers.
im new to this so i think i bricked my phon ebecause i tried to flash a jellybean rom but wen i went to restart my phone it stays on the galaxy s2 screen... i am also flashed to metro will i have to reflash ?? help me please!

Since you can get into Odin mode, grab a stock one click and get back to a working state.
Just go to the Dev section, stock rom repo and a full restore one click..

or can i bootinto recovery from odin?
Let's just keep this simple and get your phone back in an operational state.
Then we can discuss more of where you are, where you want to go and how you're going to get there.
We don't know what you were running, what you flashed, etc to answer a furry of questions.
One step at a time.

I don't think you're following the instructions correctly that MoHo gave you.
Go to the REPO. Select a One-Click Full Restore. Those have to be run from you PC.
Put your phone on the charger and turn it off.
Download and extract the One-click.
Launch the OneClick
Make sure you phone is charged to over 60%.
Get you phone into Download Mode - Power + Volume Down then Volume up to confirm.
THEN Attach it to PC and it should show up in the One-Click on some COMM port.
Click start and let it finish till it reboots your phone.
Then go back and read a whole lot more about what you're trying to do. Or yes you will brick your device.

Ok.
That issue, versus what we thought were the issues from the start, doesn't seem like what you flashed would have been the cause.
I'm not doubting that you believe that you're doing the flash process wrong, I'm doubting that the flash process is actually happening.
When you used the stock One Click, what did you use and what did you see?
To get the battery charging you may need to flash a kernel.
I would try just that in Odin - FL24, for example - and see if that helps.
Hi Guys need help bad. I hope I didnt screw my phone up.
I rooted my phone using the latest toolkit and installed twrp. Once i did that I backed up everything including efs on the external card.
Once i did that I flashed Jedi x rom but did not have much signal so decided to flash another rom which was liquid smooth. Once I flashed it again
my signal was almost non existent. I downloaded a canadian modem in the zip file and flashed it using twrp the same way i would flash a rom.
After i did that i wiped all the data and cache and the system. As I was rushing it siince its late at night i got a message saying that I am not rooted. I ignored it and rebooted the system and now its stuck on samsung logo. What can i do? Please help!!!!!
It appears that when I hold vol up plus home plus power I can get into download mode. I hope that helps.
Can someone give me some help how to get it back to life. I am pretty sure I have to use Odin at this point but dont know how
Ok i did some reading and I think the next step is to download stock image for the wind mobile turn on Odin and upload the image to the phone..
What settings should I use in Odin? What should be checked at the top and am I to use PDA only?
You can use odin or just reflash the ROM. You said tout wiped system after flashing the modern. That means you erased what ever ROM was on there. It's sticking at Samsung because there is no ROM to boot into.

Have you puked the battery. Put it back in then held volume+, home and power? Your recovery should still be there.
Also, odin is easy. Just open it and click the pda box and put your stock ROM there. Two things make sure you put your image in PDA and PDA ONLY and make sure it's your official stock Image

When I did this approach, I did it in two steps. I downloaded factory image of the firmware and flashed the device by using Odin 3.0.7.
Next, I used a tool package called "Galaxy Note2 ToolKit." Follow the instructions for how to root.
When I did the procedure, the software also had an option to include clockworkmod recovery
and busybox.
Gideon.
Sadly, my first post on XDA is a major problem with my SPH-L710. I found a ROM built specifically for the Sprint variant of the Galaxy S III, and it was a vanilla AOSP Android ROM, built from source by the developer. I read that it was all custom built and freshly made, except for a few things, including the kernel (which was I believe borrowed from CM 10) to get the ROM to actually work. So I flashed it after doing a factory wipe/reset in CWM Recovery, and set it up, and MY GOSH this ROM was A Nexus and a half! It was gorgeous! So I thought, hey, why not try to get a kernel to overclock and make this gorgeous ROM run faster and smoother. I found a kernel on XDA called matrix or matr1x kernel, and flashed the 3.4.y version. What I noted on the kernel's page was that there was a 3.0.y and a 3.4.y, which are NOT interchangeable, and I have a feeling that I made the wrong choice. I used CWM Recovery to install the kernel (also probably wrong, I should've used mobile odin...) and rebooted the phone. It died there. Black, unresponsive screen. Buttons do nothing. Had some help before now, and learned that the phone is trying to boot, but crashing ten seconds or so in. If anyone has any ideas or solutions, please don't hesitate to share.
Where did you find this kernel? Cause if it's not built specifically for the Sprint GS3 that's where you went wrong.
Try reflashing the rom if you can get into recovery.

As Ed said (hey, that rhymes!), if you can't get into recovery or download mode, you're kind of screwed.
If you flashed a kernal made for the US GS3 (and not the international version, i9300), you're not hard-bricked, just soft-bricked. Those are much easier (and cheaper) to fix.
Let's first see if you can get into recovery mode.
First off, boot into recovery (power off phone, then power on phone while holding Up and the home button).
How to fix your phone if you can access Recovery Mode.
If that works, you can just restore your nandroid backup you made before trying out a new Rom/Kernal. You made a nandroid backup, right? Right?!?!?!
If you didn't, you're not completely screwed. You can re-flash the Rom you originally had installed (which should wipe out the custom kernal and replace it with the one from the Rom. I'd recommend, though, that you wipe system, data, cache and dalvik cache before flashing it. That'll make sure nothing is left behind from the kernal.
If that doesn't work, you can try getting into download mode
How to get into download mode.
Boot into recovery (power off phone, then power on phone while holding Down and the home button).
How to fix your phone if you can access Download Mode.
You're going to have to flash a stock tar file. I'd recommend Sextape's stock rooted md4 file from their forums, but there are other tar files floating around if you care to find them. Just follow the directions on their page and you'll have your phone back up and running again.
If you can't access Download or Recovery mode, then:
How to fix your hard-brick. (JTAG Repair)
Well, if you can't access either Recovery or Download mode, congratulations, you have officially hard-bricked your phone. The only way to get the phone back to working order it to get a JTAG repair. There are a number of sites that do this, and the typical cost is around $60. Just search google for "JTAG Repair galaxy S3" and you'll find them easily.
Hopefully this has helped.
Well he either bricked it, kicked it or is just simply lost.

You should also understand that you can't just flash any kernel made for the same android version. It had to be made for your phone as well or else it contains useless instructions.
I don't see any matrix kernel in our forums either.

Thank you Cnexus, I bite my tongue last night because the question posted to him was where did he find the Kernel not the rom. Since I couldn't find this kernel and obviously you couldn't either it's not a Sprint variant kernel. If he flashes that kernel again he will be taking another ride to Sprint.

What happens when you reboot? If it takes you to recovery, boot into download mode (power+vol down+home) and flash a stock image.

Also this happened after I flashed the pure stock then I flashed the recovery and the phone automatically went to what I have explained in prior post

What rom were you previously using? And you do have a T999L right? You won't be able odin flash any stock firmware because there isn't any.
Try again to get into download mode. If you can boot recovery you should be able to get there too I'd imagine.
Hold volume down and home while powering up.
If you can do this, odin flash either cwm from aerowinders sig, or twrp from mine. Then reflash whichever rom you were running before trying the pure stock rom.

I went through thread on here and saw someone with same issue and follow Mr. Doc's instructions pertaining to the pure stock and recovery and this is where i landed. Im in download mode so yes i see my phone is not ruined lol I just need the file Mr. Doc is telling me about to reflash because im now connected to odin. I had to use another computer. I greatly appreciate all the time taken to help me get my phone back to working order. Since I am new I need to find the place where I can give a lot of Kudos to mr doc and his team now all i need is where to i go for mr doc file
In my signature, click Recoveries. Then in the twrp folder download version 2.5.0.0. Get the one that's a .tar.
Then once connected to odin, click the PDA button and select the tar file you just downloaded. Then click start.
Once done it should auto reboot. Now reboot into recovery and try doing a factory reset there.
If you still can't boot after that, flash the other, deodexed rom from my T999L thread.
I've got to go for a bit but will try to jump back on soon to see how you're doing.

Neither CWM or TWRP have added support yet, though it should be as simple as asking. Ill try to contract them in a bit.
You can manually install any of the latest recoveries for the T999 though. They have been confirmed working by several people.
Are you familiar with Odin? I suggest going to the Recoveries link in my sig and get TWRP version 2.5.0.0. The one you want has the .tar extension.
Then flash that in Odin.
If you aren't comfortable with Odin I can tell you another way using terminal emulator.
Your phone does currently have a recovery, but unless you've installed a custom one its still stock.
Also, you can flash any of the Roms posted for the T999. If the rom doesn't include a kernel, and it touchwiz based, you can flash one of the kernels in my T999L thread in development section. I'd try the MD5 kernel first so its matched with the Touchwiz rom you choose. (If you flash CM or AOSP based roms, do not use the kernels I just mentioned).
Hope that helps!

I used the Toolkit to flash mine: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746682
Choose Device option 62 and then Flash custom recovery. It will automate the ODIN install if you are not familiar.

I am familiar with Odin i used that to get me up and running again using the sig you just mentioned. If I'm understanding you correctly you're saying I can flash a t999 rom to my t999L but use a different kernel? Also am I flashing the rom using Odin and if so do I use the same method to flash kernel? I think Im getting a clear understanding because I thought I could only root thorugh odin but install roms through cwm and twrp lol and basically I can use Odin to do it all right? I want to make sure I don't have to bother you all the time lol I should have kept my darn att s3!! thanks again Mr. Doc you truly rock!!!!
