[SOLVED] Recovery mode and android boot have got exchanged ! - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When i select reboot to recovery mode(using clockworkmod 5.0.2.0) it restarts into android(cynogen mod 10.1) !
When i select restart it goes into clockworkmod recovery mode 5.8.0.0 by default !
Note : i have 5.0.2.0 installed but it goes into 5.8.0.0 all the time ....
So when ever it goes to recovery mode i use adb and fastboot to flash the boot.img of cynogenmod 10.1
Please tell me how to fix this issue ...
Also I have SHIP S-ON RL ....
hboot is 2.00.0030
How i Fixed it :
1) went into fastboot as it was working ...
2)extracted the boot.img from the rom that i was trying to flash and ran fastboot flash boot boot.img
3) Then i did - " fastboot flash recovery cmwrecovery_file"
4) This helped !
From here on i have flashed many roms and of all of those that i tried only CynagonMod works properly
Thank you all for your help though ...

How are you booting into recovery? perhaps the menu is changed and settings are incorrectly addressed. It might be a bug of the rom.

How this happened !

Heres how it all went down ... I wanted to install Cynogenmod 10.1 so
1) went to Htc dev site and unlocked the bootloader.
2) I did not know about the S-OFF thing then so i did not do anything about it. and installed rom manager from play store. started it . did "something" and a window appeared ! i selected yes ! and ...... thats it i guess ...
3) I used the adb and fastboot to flash clockworkmod recovery 5.8.0.0. ( had no clue what that was back then)
4) Next i went into the recoverymode by pressing volume down button ... then i flashed new cynogenmod and gapps from zip in the recovery and after that it went into an infinite loop. It kept going into bootloader again and again.
This is when i started searching online and did every thing i couldd .... fastboot became my best tool.
i used fastboot to flash different versions of clockworkmod recovery but nothing fixed it ...
Intersting observation here is when i did the following
1) while device was in an bootloop it was booting into clockworkmod 5.8.0.0 all the time so
2) i used fastboot to flash different version of clockworkmod 5.1.x.x and still i boots into 5.8.0.0 after i hit the command "fastboot reboot"
3) some how i felt like going to hboot using the command "adb reboot bootloader" and then i selected selected recovery from there....then it took me to clockworkmod 5.1.x.x ... it was there the whole while ...
4) So i flashed cynogenmod from 5.1.x.x and still after a reboot it took me to the 5.8.0.0 recovery mode.... i did not understand that !!
5) Then i extracted the boot.img from cynogenmod 10.1 and flashed it using fastboot command on the computer.... Repeated the step 3 and BOOM it took me to cynogenmod 10.1 android operating system.
I installed rom manager and installed clockworkmod 5.0.2.0 ...
Even now if i restart it goes to 5.8.0.0 recovery ....
Due to lack of knowledge i dont know how to fix this issue ... Is there a way to remove that clockworkmod 5.8.0.0 ? I doesnt seem to get overwritten ...it seems to be in a location that cannot be touched (or a location where my rom is supposed to go, only it does not !)
Please help...

Is there a way we can wipe the internal drive and install the entire thing from scratch like how we wipe a hard drive and install ubuntu again !
CURRENT SITUATION : When i select reboot into recovey using rom manager or rom toolbox or busybox its booting into cynogenmod !
But if i restart my phone normally it goes into clockworkmod 5.8.0.0 !
I have root access to the shell in the phone and all .... i have adb on my computer set up to open the shell and gain root access !
I cant find anything like /boot or grub.d (ubuntu) in the / directory of my phone !
Please solve this mystery !!

After you have adb rebooted into the bootloader you need to navigate to fastboot with the volume buttons, then choose it with the power button. This puts the phone in fastboot mode. Then do the fastboot commands.

If the recovery flashes properly it will completely overwrite the previous one. If it doesn't overwrite something went wrong in flashing. And I'm saying you should flash a recovery image, not a ROM image.

If i understand you correctly ... you are asking me to flash a new cwm image ! and then install the new rom from the recovery !
I did that and it does not over ride the old cwm v5.8.0.0 !
fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockworktouch-5.8.1.5-ace.img did not overwrite !!
I just did it and it still boots into CWM v5.8.0.0 ... how is it still on there ? i thought i wiped the memory !!

Wiping system, data, and cache does not wipe the recovery. It only wipes the ROM partition. Sorry, I don't know how to solve your problem. What an odd error.
EDIT: your volume buttons work, right?

[HELP] SEMI BRICK desire after flash hboot

i looked in all the android forums without found a solution, this is my last hope...
Start situation:
Desire S-OFF
HBOOT 0.93 CM7r2
Recovery 4EXT TOUCH
ROM Runnymede AIO 5.0.1
What i did:
downloaded data++ hboot and checked MD5
flashed by bootloader with PB99IMG method
What happened:
the recovery didn't start properly, it reloaded in "safe mode" and still not working: "you have to format internal partitions"
What i tried:
flashed cw 5 and cw 3 both can load first screen but when i enter in a menu: black screen and freeze.
So i erase all partition and i flashed all possible kind of hboot and recovery via fastboot shell. no changes, i'm still unable to use a recovery or boot the device.
So i tried to flash a stock unrooted rom extracted from an official ruu, it overwrite all but the bootloader, at the end it doesnt boot, the device rests at the first screen (white background and green htc logo) for more than an hour.
What the device can do:
bootloader, fastboot, first recovery screen.
what can i do? please help me

u can try to check what happen when the screen goes black in recovery (try a stable one like CWM 2.5.0.7 or 5.0.2.0)..for example using adb to check the logs in the folder /cache/recovery/ (or something) and see if there is some error that can help you
anyway thats strange because the recovery to work correctly should need only /cache, /sdcard and trackball working..maybe one of these thing is broken in ur phone..

Bricked while flashing ViperX 2.0.0

Hi, I think I bricked my device. I have HBOOT working, but no recovery and /system. When I enter recovery, it shows recovery bootscreen (I use TWRP) and it reboots after 2-3 seconds. After this I will not flash any ROMs I think. I can't do fastboot erase cache, coz I'm on Windows XP, and CMD says that this command does not exist.

Keeps cycling through CWM

Just got a One X.
Unlocked the boot loader.
Installed CWM (v5.8.4.0 from fast boot)
Then when i navigate to the rom it says its completed update? seems to take only 30 seconds when I reboot it brings me back in CWM.
Basically I can mount the phone phone through clock work mod and see the rom/zip file but it installs as update and just keeps popping back into clockwork mod? am I able to just get this back to normal?
finding update package...
opening update package...
installing update...
finishes after 15 seconds? saying install from sdcard complete. have I missed a step?
Help me please guys I feel the information I followed as done away with a boot.img?
Cheers,
Gary

I extracted the boot image from the downloaded rom and placed that in to the fastboot folder? I followed these instructions mate, I think ive messed up the boot?
Copy the CM10 ZIP file to your phone’s internal SD card.
On the PC, extract the Fasboot.zip. You will get a folder named Fastboot.
Extract the boot.img file from the cm10_endeavoru-ota-eng.noeri-028.zip file and place it into the Fastboot folder.
Turn your phone off.
Boot to Fastboot Mode. Hold down the Volume Down and the Power buttons until the screen turns on to enter Bootloader Mode.
In Bootloader Mode, highlight Fastboot Mode using the Volume keys and select it by using the Power button.
Connect your phone to your PC via USB cable.
Open a command prompt on your PC and navigate it to the Fastboot folder.
In the command prompt, type fastboot devices to check if your device has successfully connected to your PC. Your phone’s serial number should appear on the screen.
Flash the boot.img by typing the following in the command prompt:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
Go back to your phone and select Bootloader to go back to the main Bootloader menu.
In Bootloader Mode, highlight Recovery using the Volume keys and select it by using the Power button to boot into ClockworkMod Recovery.
Select Wipe data/factory reset > Yes.
Select Install ZIP from SD card > Choose ZIP from SD card > select the cm10_endeavoru-ota-eng.noeri-028.zip file > Yes.
Select Go back > Reboot system now.
Ive then updated to a newer cwm as per this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1594819
I dont think i can enter fast boot no longer? I can still mount things, but dont know what else.

Your bootloader and recovery are independent of your rom. you will be able to access them even without a rom installed.
the erase cache fuction is not necessary.
Just flash your boot image again.. and try installing the rom again.

Also have you updated your hboot?? or is it the old one?
I dont think I updated the hboot? should I bother?
I am using the CM10 rom? I know its down to each tastes and requirement but is this a decent one? phone runs smoother than my LG 4X HD P880 despite that scoring more in benchmarks.
I still technically have not installed the rom through CWM? I just used cmd prompt to flash a boot image then it started up.

You can update the hboot if you want. All the sense based JB roms work only on the upgraded hboot. Though AOSP roms work on all hboots. So upto you.

[Q] Phone stuck at HTC One Beats Audio screen

Hi, I'm having a problem with the phone freezing on booting D:
Unlocked the bootloader.
Installed ClockworkMod recovery.
Made a backup.
[Not sure] rooted it.
I tried to install a ROM [CyanogenMod 10.1], but that made the phone freeze on the HTC screen instead, so I tried to restore the backup, but now I'm stuck on the HTC One Beats Audio screen & ADB won't recognise the phone is connected [I've got the drivers & it worked before].
Can anyone offer any help? Would be greatly appreciated.
Make a full wipe in the recovery then install the CM10.1, gapps and the vendors ! Don't reboot....go from the recovery to the bootloader
Adb reboot bootloader
Then flash the boot.img from the CM10.1
Then reboot the phone !

Thanks for the reply.
I can't get ADB to recognise that the phone is attached to the PC though, despite having the latest drivers [HTC Sync] & the fact that it worked earlier. I've done kill-server & start-server a hundred times.
Any idea why what I've tried so far would make it unable to be found?
Hold the power and the volume - button together until the phone reboots into the bootloader, from there you can go in to the recovery and mount the sdcard as a mass storage device. Copy the needed files and do as i described in my first post.
You don't need adb, you need to perform fastboot commands in the bootloader. The rest is done in the recovery

I already have a CM10.1.zip on the device, so erased the cache & flashed boot.img from that in the bootloader, then went into recovery & installed the .zip, but it's still bootlooping, just on the HTC screen this time though.
You need to flash the vendor installer in recovery also... find it in cm10.1 thread.

I'm having an issue with getting the files onto the device to flash them now though. As I said, I had ADB working [how I got the CM.zip on there], but now it isn't & as there's no removable media for this phone, I don't know how I can get these onto the phone D:
In the device manager, it recognises the phone as a ADB thing, but checking the devices [adb devices] returns nothing.
I tried mounting USB in recovery but I got 'unable to open ums lunfile'.
Any ideas? Thanks again for the help so far.
CWM is out of date.
DL this: http://download2.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.4.0-endeavoru.img
Copy to fastboot folder and rename recovery.img
Phone into fastboot mode, type fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Then mount and it works.
