Ok, so I bricked my wildire s.
Is there a way to install the unofficial cm mod using fastboot?
It seems I need boot.img, systems.img and data.img but in the "unofficial-CM7-marvel-nigthly-20111218.zip", I can only find boot.img. I do seem to have Clockworks Recovery Mode installed. And it's unlocked via htcdev.com.
I need to do it via fastboot, because i dont think I can access the sd card while in hboot, fastboot.
And if anyone reads this, please learn from me and always create a backup before you do anything with your phone. Otherwise you'll end up with just a brick.
Just reinstall cwm with recovery.img
in fastboot mode type:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
cwm recovery.img is attached below.
then you can install cm7 from cwm

This might work.
How "bricked" is it? Does it boot to hboot/fastboot with vol down/power after a battery removal/replace?
If so follow the instructions to install CWM recovery then flash CM7.2 1218 Nightly and GAPPS from there.
yeah hboot, fastboot and cwm is working. However i can't figure out how to access the sd card while in these modes. So, I am not sure if i can install cm with the traditional method.
So I am trying to figure out how to do it via fastboot.

In CWM you have the possibility to mount sdcard to your pc. what you need is the cm7 zip file, nothing more.
Guys you are awesome!
It works, it's installing
Thanks

sir help please. i cant acccess to the fastboot.
whenever i attempt to fastboot mode. itflashes green to red screen then, it directs me to the home screen.
what should i do?
i think i loss my the fastboot mode.
i looked in all the android forums without found a solution, this is my last hope...
Start situation:
Desire S-OFF
HBOOT 0.93 CM7r2
Recovery 4EXT TOUCH
ROM Runnymede AIO 5.0.1
What i did:
downloaded data++ hboot and checked MD5
flashed by bootloader with PB99IMG method
What happened:
the recovery didn't start properly, it reloaded in "safe mode" and still not working: "you have to format internal partitions"
What i tried:
flashed cw 5 and cw 3 both can load first screen but when i enter in a menu: black screen and freeze.
So i erase all partition and i flashed all possible kind of hboot and recovery via fastboot shell. no changes, i'm still unable to use a recovery or boot the device.
So i tried to flash a stock unrooted rom extracted from an official ruu, it overwrite all but the bootloader, at the end it doesnt boot, the device rests at the first screen (white background and green htc logo) for more than an hour.
What the device can do:
bootloader, fastboot, first recovery screen.
what can i do? please help me
[SOLVED]
i flashed the last RC version of 4ext via bootloader with PB99IMG ( http://www.4ext.net/PB99IMG.zip ) instead of flash it by fastboot shell and now my desire is back!
Erase storage from bootloader, connect USB, get into fastboot, fastboot erase cache, fastboot flash hboot 'hboot name here'.img, fastboot reboot-bootloader and touch recovery should work!

Maybe you can try to re-flash the recovery :
fastboot flash recovery 'recovery name here'

i had the same problem.
1) flash back previous hboot that was working fine.
2) format all partition without sd card
3) reflash hboot
you should be able to open recovery in normal mode.
I had the same problem as you last night when switching to stock hboot with touch recovery 8 but was fixed by doing what others have mentioned :s

u can try to check what happen when the screen goes black in recovery (try a stable one like CWM 2.5.0.7 or 5.0.2.0)..for example using adb to check the logs in the folder /cache/recovery/ (or something) and see if there is some error that can help you
anyway thats strange because the recovery to work correctly should need only /cache, /sdcard and trackball working..maybe one of these thing is broken in ur phone..

First you will need to reflash your recovery while your phone is in fastboot mode, you can do this by opening a cmd and using the command 'fastboot flash recovery recoveryfilehere.img' and changing recoveryfilehere for your recovery file's name.
I am a bit unsure on these next steps but I believe you will then need to boot into the recovery you just installed and then use the following commands.
'adb devices'
'adb shell'
'mount sdcard'
and then in another cmd you will use the command 'adb push ROMNAME.zip /sdcard
then reboot into recovery and look for your ROM in the root of your sd card and install it as usual. Don't forget to flash the kernal too.
I tried these steps but didnt get result
See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26119526&postcount=17 and adapt to yours.
i tired many times , but each time get message " error:device not found" :S
Do you have HTC USB driver installed ?
yes i did
So it means that you're successfully boot into recovery by fastboot boot recovery.img and adb not working for you ?
Please note, adb will not work when you do fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

When you say reflash "it", what exactly do you mean by "it"?
I have CWM 5.0.2.7 provided by the Semaphore kernel. When I enter Recovery via either 3-button salute method or QuickBoot app, I get CWM 5.0.2.7: No problem.
BUT if I choose recover from Titanium Backup, I get the dreaded Samsung Stock recovery 3e. So apparently I have both recoveries on my device.
Which one will the Fastboot command erase?
Thanks!
cmd:
fastboot erase recovery
then go to Recovery Mode immediately after it

well this is not good because with fastboot erase recovery command you delete recovery partition from phone
so you have to reflash it before to go recovery
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
now you can enter recovery directly
in fact if you have a corrupted recovery is not necessary to erase it just flash it again by fastboot flash
look here for a tutor how to use fastboot

Thank you for the clarification!
I don't have any recovery.img to flash. The only CWM image available directly from CWM site is very old, 2.5.x.x and not compatible with newer 5.0.2.7 backups.
I have three "recovery" files on my device. The Samsung recovery files are: \recovery, and \sbin\recovery-samsung; both are identical.
The Semaphore/CWM 5.0.2.7 file is: \sbin\recovery. I suspect that depending what method or app is used to enter recovery, one location is chosen or the other.
I am considering renaming the Samsung: \recovery to something like \recovery.bak, and then copying the Semaphore/CWM 5.0.2.7 recovery into its location. If it works, I will always enter the newer recovery. It if does not work, I could boot into download and revert. But not sure?
Any advice is welcome

Thanks Theonew. The Recovery Builder attempt failed. Nearly 50% of the attempts on that website are also failed builds, so I don't feel so bad.
Thanks anyway.

When i select reboot to recovery mode(using clockworkmod 5.0.2.0) it restarts into android(cynogen mod 10.1) !
When i select restart it goes into clockworkmod recovery mode 5.8.0.0 by default !
Note : i have 5.0.2.0 installed but it goes into 5.8.0.0 all the time ....
So when ever it goes to recovery mode i use adb and fastboot to flash the boot.img of cynogenmod 10.1
Please tell me how to fix this issue ...
Also I have SHIP S-ON RL ....
hboot is 2.00.0030
How i Fixed it :
1) went into fastboot as it was working ...
2)extracted the boot.img from the rom that i was trying to flash and ran fastboot flash boot boot.img
3) Then i did - " fastboot flash recovery cmwrecovery_file"
4) This helped !
From here on i have flashed many roms and of all of those that i tried only CynagonMod works properly
Thank you all for your help though ...

Heres how it all went down ... I wanted to install Cynogenmod 10.1 so
1) went to Htc dev site and unlocked the bootloader.
2) I did not know about the S-OFF thing then so i did not do anything about it. and installed rom manager from play store. started it . did "something" and a window appeared ! i selected yes ! and ...... thats it i guess ...
3) I used the adb and fastboot to flash clockworkmod recovery 5.8.0.0. ( had no clue what that was back then)
4) Next i went into the recoverymode by pressing volume down button ... then i flashed new cynogenmod and gapps from zip in the recovery and after that it went into an infinite loop. It kept going into bootloader again and again.
This is when i started searching online and did every thing i couldd .... fastboot became my best tool.
i used fastboot to flash different versions of clockworkmod recovery but nothing fixed it ...
Intersting observation here is when i did the following
1) while device was in an bootloop it was booting into clockworkmod 5.8.0.0 all the time so
2) i used fastboot to flash different version of clockworkmod 5.1.x.x and still i boots into 5.8.0.0 after i hit the command "fastboot reboot"
3) some how i felt like going to hboot using the command "adb reboot bootloader" and then i selected selected recovery from there....then it took me to clockworkmod 5.1.x.x ... it was there the whole while ...
4) So i flashed cynogenmod from 5.1.x.x and still after a reboot it took me to the 5.8.0.0 recovery mode.... i did not understand that !!
5) Then i extracted the boot.img from cynogenmod 10.1 and flashed it using fastboot command on the computer.... Repeated the step 3 and BOOM it took me to cynogenmod 10.1 android operating system.
I installed rom manager and installed clockworkmod 5.0.2.0 ...
Even now if i restart it goes to 5.8.0.0 recovery ....
Due to lack of knowledge i dont know how to fix this issue ... Is there a way to remove that clockworkmod 5.8.0.0 ? I doesnt seem to get overwritten ...it seems to be in a location that cannot be touched (or a location where my rom is supposed to go, only it does not !)
Please help...

After you have adb rebooted into the bootloader you need to navigate to fastboot with the volume buttons, then choose it with the power button. This puts the phone in fastboot mode. Then do the fastboot commands.

If the recovery flashes properly it will completely overwrite the previous one. If it doesn't overwrite something went wrong in flashing. And I'm saying you should flash a recovery image, not a ROM image.

I did that and it does not over ride the old cwm v5.8.0.0 !
