FIX: Otterbox Silicone Stretching - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

I've had an Otterbox Defender now for quite awhile. The silicone over the plastic shell always seems to stretch over time causing a loose fit. I know you can contact customer support and have a new case sent to you from Otterbox, but I figured there had to be something to tighten the silicone up. After browsing the web, I heard that if you boil the silicone for a few minutes in boiling water, it will tighten it up. I figured I'd give it a try and it actually did work, the case now fits like it did when it was new.

Does it stretch back out after a few days? Haven't tried it but did read that it was just a temp fix for a couple of days.

It started to stretch a little bit after about a month, not as bad as it was in the beginning. I don't take it off much, so if you take it off repeatedly I'd guess it would stretch worse. The key is to catch it when it's barely stretching rather than if it gets too far along. I had another silicone that I let stretch for a very long time, boiled that one, it went back to normal some what, but not nearly as well.

I've read about this also and have done this with my black defender silicone and yes it did stretch but it also somehow kinda melted some of the silicone and left a few nicks/holes in it. Also it makes the silicone seem thinner and loopier but it did do the trick to shrink it back up. Also I shocked it in ice water directly after boiling it to maintain the shrinkage.

Weird, mine got no nicks or anything from boiling. It did feel thinned, but felt more normal as it cooled.

Yeah the nicks may have already been there but by boiling it may have stretched them out and made them noticeable/ worse.

Just got my new Otterbox Impact Case...

With all the talk about the Otterbox Defender ($50), haven't heard much press on the Otterbox Impact ($19.95 / $15 after discounts).
Anyway, my Otterbox Defender was a disaster so I got this instead and I gotta say, it is REALLY nice. The rubber is solid yet soft, fits ubersnug and the screen protector is THICK and high quality. For about $15 I am VERY pleased.
** Just put on the screen protector - no lint, bubbles easy to squeeze out - love it! This MUCH nicer than the Defender.
I am just amazed by this case. Just a simple silicone case but the silicone quality is so high and smooth feeling without being overly soft. The screen protector is thick and with zero finger drag. I honestly don't know why anyone would need more protection than this. The Defender is pure overkill.

Ordered a couple of the Impact Series case's from otterbox site, hoping thy don't take as long as some of their cases have for people. Was leaning towards the trident case but after looking around decided to go with this. As far as cases go, a good silicon is all I really need so I'm excited to see how these then out. Glad to hear you like it, as with any case I've heard mixed results but I'm eager to see it in person.

I bought and love the Commuter case. Has silicone core with plastic around it. Not big or heavy. Plus it doesn't catch pocket lint.

Mine took about 5 days to arrive but I live on the east coast.
Even though the case is just silicone, it is pure quality. The screen protector is awesome too.

Looked at the commuter, I guess if I'm not feeling the Impact I could get that, all the stores around here carry that one and that one alone.
I keep reading about lint and or various fibers, which I don't necessarily foresee as being an issue (lint free), but do the grooves / textured backing catch stuff a lot? Like I said I'm not too worried, only curious.
And as far as the screen protector goes, I just use the ones Sprint sells. Have some extras so will see how different thr otterbox one is. Zero issues with this Sprint branded generic one, touch input / sensitivity or otherwise. Might just leave it.

Lint isn't a big problem because although this case is silicone it is a higher grade silicone and a bit harder than typical cheaper cases. The screen protector is nice because it is extra thick plastic so it is easier to get rid of bubbles.
To prevent lint and scratches just grab a microfiber glasses case from your local mall and slip your EVO into that before placing it in your pocket

Hmm, just got mine. Yesterday actually, but was sleeping. Initial impressions are mixed ... case is extremely loose on the sides. Guess I thought it would have been a snuggled fit with the "harder silicon" but it really is quite loose. To the point of it being a little bothersome. Not sure how much of an issue it'll be over the course of a day but a slight brush moves it. I dunno. Feels comfortable in the hand(s) though. Will have to give it a few days.

Weird. Mine literally could not be any more snug. There is no wiggle room at all.
If you mean that you can flip the edge a bit with your finger, well its silicone I personally don't find that bothersome at all.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Hah yes, right it is silicone and I know there is a lot of surface "area" between the edges but it seems flimsier than I would have imagined. As I said I thought, as read, that it had harder silicon. And I've had silicon cases for various devices and with most, once on, fit rather snug.
And with the backing ... noticed it seems to collect various "particle" stuff but can easily be wiped away. The one most often voiced concerning doesn't seem to be an issue. Doesn't seem to pull on my pocket lining. I like it but the flimsy edging is really bothering me. It even seems to stick out in the middle on the left / right sides. To the point if you push it you can see it press in to the side of the phone. I dunno ... I have 2 so it doesn't appear to be a defect ....

Dunno dude. Mine doesn't stick out at the sides at all. It is a VERY snug fit and the silicone on the sides is quite thick and not even remotely flimsy.
Don't know what to say. :-( The fit on mine simply could not be any tighter.

I got the impact case and used it for two weeks. The sides become flimsy with time with all the times you pull it out of your pocket. It's a nice case. But the sides becoming flimsy started to bug me. It also added bulk to it not alot but still adds some. I loved the grip though awesome.
I went to a sprint store and tried out the commuter case. Loved it, hard casing with rubber skin. Its a bit slippery though. But the case isnt bulky and fits the phone like a glove. Only thing I dislike is the bottom plug that protects the hdmi and usb. It opens up at times. But it's not a big deal. I get compliments on the commuter case as well pricey but I think its worth it. Both cases are great though. If the impact case didnt get flimsy with time it would still be on my phone the grip is great.

With all your raving about this case I had to see what the hubbub was about. Ordered mine yesterday. Thanks for the heads up, OP.
I do like the case, but still the edging on the sides is my only beef. Was thinking; I use these regular old screen protectors that cover just the screen and the one that came with case seems to cover most of front of phone. And wondering if maybe the little extra space would result in the front being more snug. Maybe not as its not that thick. Either way I'm liking it. The grip feels very nice.

Seidio Active case or Incipio case?

I constantly am taking my phone outta my pocket, and it sometimes gets stuck when I wear jeans... Which case should I go with?
Sent from my ADR6350 using XDA App
If you are concerned with it getting stuck to your jeans, I recommend going with a case that doesn't have a soft rubber component to the case. Soft rubber in my experience will always stick more than just hard smooth case plastic. even the TPU cases seem to slide in and out of my pocket better than soft silicone (which is what I believe the seidio and incipio cases have exposed through the hard piece).
Other than that, I ordered the white and grey incipio and it should be here within the next couple days. I think it looks slick-as-snot (at least in the pics online). If you like, I'll let you know how much it sticks in my pocket when I get it.
the seidio surface that theatheistreverend referenced is a good one. so is the incipio feather. i have both but been using the incipio feather more just because it adds less bulk than the seidio. both are good and grippy without any issues of lint or getting stuck in pockets.
@theatheistreverend - look forward to hear what you think of the incipio white/grey. looks very nice but one of the reviewers did say the silicon seems to gather lint, which is why i went with the feather instead. at any rate, let us know what you think of it.
I failed to mention that I have the incipio case.. and that's what gets stuck. I'm thinking about trying out the Seidio though.
The Incipio is a great case for the Inc2, but it's a dust bunny, I had to get rid of it. TPU is great.

How do you like that feather? I have thought about trying one but I worry about it protecting the top, bottom and corners. Does it seem like it would protect well against dropping regardless of how it lands? Mine always seems to land on its corner.
I will let you know when I get the incipio.

Well, I have had my incipio case on my phone most of the day and though I cannot attest to it gathering lint, I will say I am disappointed.
It is a lot of trouble getting the case on and off. The hard shell is so tight and the silicon is so soft, the hard case pulls at the silicon and a lot of adjusting needs to be done to get it right.
The softness of the silicon felt cool at first, but now I notice that it feels like a wrapper made of baby skin. The slightest push on an edge and it gives way and folds over backwards like a weak fingernail.
I'll get back to you if I notice any excess of lint. That is if I can stand to keep this on for much longer.
I still say it looks pretty sweet though.

Buy from Amazon to save some money guys. A lot cheaper than their website
Had my incipio on for a few days now. I have had to brush a hair or two from the silicon part of the case, but a lint magnet it is not. My house must just be a bigger lint magnet than my phone since everyone else seems to have lint issues with silicon.
I am beginning to really like my case, but I'll still try others as time goes on. I get bored.

I just ordered a Seidio Surface from Amazon. I got the case and a car charger for about $33 with shipping. I have an Innocase on my old Eris, and I liked it. They don't add too much size to the phone.

I seriously have to vent about the design of this phone. UGH!

What in the hell was Samsung thinking when they made this thing so damn shiny and smooth? I drop it on a daily basis.
I tried a silicone case from eBay, the fit was GREAT but the things like a dang lint roller. EVERYTHING sticks to it. I pick up my phone and it's covered with hair and grit, dirt, sand, you name it.
I actually have to wash my silicone case off. I actually got sick of how much stuff it picks up, I stopped using it.
I ordered a Case-Mate case last week, hoping that works out better. Hopefully it shows up tomorrow before I just return it for an iPhone 4S, ugh, it's frustrating the hell out of me.
blame the phone on your parkinson's disease. makes sense.
Order a TPU case. Nothing is better. They have them on Amazon. Matte black looks amazing with this phone. The owner of TPU posts on XDA and is always listening to our feedback.
Hmm... haven't dropped the phone yet.
Try TPU next time, its amazing.
Haven't dropped mine yet. Maybe you should try sticky tape on your hands
How does a TPU case differ from a Silicone case as far as stuff sticking to it? I've never really had much luck with these rubber cases from that stand point. Stuff always sticks to them like crazy.
What is a TPU case made from? I guess if the Case-Mate doesn't work out, I can try that next.
That said, I think I actually looked at the TPU cases when first looking for a case. TPU Cases was sold out every time I looked so I ended up ordering this silicone rubber piece of crap I got from eBay.

Could be different for someone else, but I've had mine for 2 weeks and I have noticed some extra scuff marks. Since the upper rim of the case where the phone enters is made of a slightly harder TPU material, constantly removing the phone from the case will cause this to happen. I do this to clean out any dust particles that may get through. If it wasn't for the case looking so good on the phone, I probably would've switched it out for that reason.
get a TPU case, not going to prevent drops but just trust sammy's build quality. Mine has already taken some spills and already came out ahead
How do you drop your phone so often that you blame the phone's design?
I did accidentally throw my phone, but that's because I forgot it was in my hand, lol.
Go with the TPU case. I picked up the matte black one off of amazon myself as a temp solution until I splurged on a casemate or something more "heavy duty" and otterbox like.

Diztronic TPU case

Can anyone recommend this case? I've been searching like mad for the perfect case to fit my requirements, and been having a hard time. I need a case:
Protects phone
Easily removable
Able to slip into/ carry in a side
Leather holster
Must have good grip!
I need good grip as I'm a mechanic
and dirty/greasy hands makes for
more potential dropping. The diztronic case appears to fit my needs, but would appreciate some feedback! Thanks!

I have the diztronic tpu case and i love it. It fits better than any other case i've used for this phone. Slips in and out easily. Doesn't add much to the thickness of the phone. Only recommendation - get it in black. I had it in clear and in smoke, both yellowed in a matter of weeks. I have a black one now and it is awesome! They're pretty cheap too, I got mine on amazon. Think it was like 10 bucks or something...
Sounds good..What about fitting into a side belt holster? Will the case meterial catch too much? I'd like to avoid having to fight getting the phone in and out. Thanks man! For 10 bucks I should prob just try it out lol..

The case doesn't add much thickness to the phone at all. You can get the case in matte back finish or glossy back finish. I've always gotten the matte finish, because it looks nice, slides easily, but still provides excellent grip. I've read reviews that the glossy finishes attract dust, and I would imagine the glossy finish one would get caught more easily in your belt holster. I would definitely recommend the matte back black case. I doubt you will be disappointed.
I can't post links because i'm still "new member" (i don't really post a lot), but if you search amazon for B005YEFM8M then you will see the case I am talking about. Currently going for $9.90.
Thanks for the info! I went ahead and ordered the matte black case. I'll come back here and review after I get it.

I have the clear one, and I like it but it has damaged my phone's frame. I think its because it doesn't fit 100% perfectly so dust accumulated in between the frame and the case, thus scratching the frame.
So just make sure you clean it often.

Yea, same thing happened to mine, but as long as you keep a case on it, you can't even tell.
Got the case today and here are my thoughts: Fit and finish is good. My biggest gripe is the sides. Its fairly easy to move the sides away from the phone, and this is especially noticed when pulling the phone out of the side holster. Not a deal breaker, but something to be aware of.
I was anticipating a bit more grip, but its not bad. For protection, I think it should do the job, although dropping the phone from chest height to concrete is something that concerns me. Hopefully I won't have to find out lol. I need a larger side holster as its a bit too tight, and retrieving the phone should be easier. I'll stick with this case for now, but still open to other options.
I still feel like I need just a tiny bit more bulk and grip, to be perfect.

Otterbox Defender

Hey guys
I just got the otterbox defender for my S3 w/ holster
Is it me or is it a pain to take out and put back the phone into the holster...?
I don't trust that plastic piece to last forever...
Any tips or tricks?
No issues here and i've had mine since they came out. Sometimes it doesn't click and you have to jiggle it to go in. I have my phone face down and my camera on the right.
i'd be more concerned about the stretching rather then the holster issue lol
Snug
Mine is pretty snug too but bearable.
what is this?
http://www.otterbox.com/Samsung-Galaxy-S3-Defender-Series/SAM2-GALAXY-S3,default,pd.html
don't buy it
Defender series is a plastic shield surrounded by a silicon case. also has a belt clip. the problem with defender series for galaxy s3 is the silicon case, it deforms apparently because of heating. I have one, Otter Box has sent me replacement twice, now have the third one, same issue. pretty ugly when silicon case expands losing the shape.

The first one I did it very often. I think between 5 and 10 times a month. The second one. I did it once a month for cleaning. Taking care of not forcing it. Same results. It was 3 months since new to warranty replacement. Has been a month since last replacement sent by otter box. I had never take out this silicone case, the same issue is reappearing.

the silicone sucks. i rarely take my case off and it spreads at the corners. i think its from using the holster. the corners that make contact with the holster has a bigger gap. they should've use a different material that's more rubbery.
If your silicone is stretching or not conforming to the corners correctly, boil it in water for 2 minutes or so... Should tighten it back up for a little while.

sounds like a temp fix. otterbox should've used different material or a better design from the start.
I agree, they should of used a better product to prevent this annoyance. Anyone else have issues with the clips breaking that hold the plastic portion of the case together?

The holster isn't the reason for the corner gaps. I never used the holster within 3 warranty replacements for the same issue.

Yeah it's not the main reason, but I noticed the sides that do make contact with the holster has a bigger gap.
