Finally decent 3g speed - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

I'm not sure who to thank sprint or Samsung but ever since MC3 and MD4 was released I'm able to watch a YouTube video in HQ without it buffering every 2 secs. I can actually use the web without much delay. I'm finally feeling like I'm getting what I been paying for actually working 3G. Did anyone else notice an improvement in 3G speeds?
I love the 90s. Good times.

Haven't noticed any kind of speed change here in Orange County, California. Currently running the MD4 modem with the Deviant Xone ROM, though I'm downloading stock MD4 to get away from the screen glitching. Not to mention that, well, my data is faster and more reliable on TW (not trying to start this whole conversation again, just my experience). LTE is nice, but will sometimes just sit there and the ping sometimes when trying to load something up is just unacceptable. I'm guessing this is because I'm in an area where LTE is technically still being worked on. I'll report back with anything new I find in MD4.
disclaimer: my speeds suck right now. can't stream a spotify song without it pausing to buffer constantly.
Edit: After some testing, I can say that my data performance is actually somehow better on AOSP now. Couldn't even get a Play Store download to start in my room with stock MD4, went back to MROM and well, it took forever, but it worked.

i am getting anywhere between 1-3mb download on MD4 with 3G

[Q] Insanely Bad 3G Speeds after Official Froyo OTA

Ok, so I've been a lurker on the forums for quite some time, but I finally have a problem that I felt warranted a new thread, as the only threads I've found upon doing a search are pretty old and not specifically relevant to the issue I'm having.
I recently updated to 2.2 with the official OTA (the .6 firmware, not the early .3 leak) and basically ever since I've had no problems short of a universally ABYSMAL 3G connection. The phone stays connected, and I can browse the web, etc. but I'm getting speeds of about 7k down. Yes, 7. Not 70, not 700, 7.
I've tried testing both in the admittedly buggy speedtest.net app, which actually reported a much higher upload speed than download, and then again with mobilespeedtest.com just to be sure it wasn't an error within the speedtest app. My 3G speeds are so incredibly bad that my NPR app won't function at all. Youtube videos buffer for minutes on end even at low quality, even Google takes about 30 seconds to load. I've tried restarting the phone, I've updated the PRL, I've used the network app to make sure my PRL was set to CDMA Auto (it was)... I'm at my wits end and considering a hard reset. Before I do that though I was just wondering if anyone out there has been experiencing the same problems.
Any magic tricks out there? Am I all alone in this one? >.>;
Sounds like a rare case of your radio being internally damaged from flashing corruption. I'd take it to a Sprint store and they should replace it for you for free.
Good luck
Can you download the OTA manually and attempt to reflash it?
I was having the same problem. It started with the RC1 ROM, then I flashed to the new Fresh 3.1 Rom. Nothing I did helped then I found a page that had all the old radios. So I flashed a few radios back from when I had better service. Maybe you can try to flash a different radio. So far it had been pretty good for me. I didn't flash the Wimax, just try the radio.

Can anyone explain the erratic signal?

My phone acts very weird and I don't know if it's normal or not. My phone's signal jumps between full bars and then 1 or no bars when I surf the web or send a picture message. It's downright annoying. Sure, it usually sends and receives data, but the fluctuating signal is getting to be beyond annoying. Anyone else having this problem? I'm on the current version of the Frozen Syndicate ROM.

Welcome to Sprint.
We all would like a valid reason besides spring saying "were currently fixing our antenna's."

What he said. This is very common on the Epic. Happens to me a lot =\
Running SRF 1.1.0 as well.
Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but I thought it had to do with the modem builds with the epic. I don't think it is a Sprint universal issue, because I did not have this issue on any of my previous sprint devices (that I remember).

Correct, it's the modem. That's why you see people on the forum complaining about the EC05 modem sometimes because it has signal bar issues, or stuff like that.
My phone does the same thing, even if it's sitting and NOT moving. Even my data speeds fluctuate sooooo much, it sucks. Sometimes Youtube will work great, other times they won't even start to load.
Hmmm...
It probably is the tower. Could be the modem to blame as well. Here in my house, I connect to my Airrave. 98% of the time, I have full bars with a stable connection with relatively consistent fast 3G speeds. The 2%, I get some wonky lag and usually then go and reset the Airrave. Everything works fine after I reset it.
I was just out of town in Vegas over the weekend and I had MAJOR problems sending MMS's, highly erratic data speeds, fluctuating signal, and overall connection problems. That was even when I wasn't holding the phone. Voice data and sending SMS's were very reliable, but forget sending MMS's or having good 4G speeds. I'm starting to think 4G is a drain both battery and money wise. Using 4G is like driving a classic car: It doesn't always start up, they're hard to find, they're finicky; but when it works properly, it's badass!
Random question: Is there an app that has a status bar for sending SMS and MMS's like the iPhone? For example, on the iPhone when you send an SMS or MMS, there's a status bar that shows the status of that message. If it's going out or lagging, etc. Is there an app that does that? I think that's a cool feature. Handcent just has a circular pinwheel, but stops when it goes out.
I would think it has to do with the modem as well. I have an EB13 based ROM, but an EC05 modem. I've noticed similar things, just not very frequently. It's strange...I'll have "great" signal, then for no reason, it'll dorp to 1x coverage and that SUCKS.
I'm thinking of going back to the EB13 modem as most people seem to think it's quite a bit better than the EC05 modem. I do think even that varies from phone to phone though, so I think it's mostly trial and error until you find what works best for you.
I have a fantastic update. Well it is for me, and might be for all f you also. Last night I decided to odin the EC05 modem again. And guess what? My signals beeen great!! Its always constant! No 4bars then zero in same spot no more!!
I already had the EC05 modem before I decided to do this. I recommmend odin'in you modem again!!
BIG NOTE*** I used the phone location for the modem.tar NOT pda.

Try the DK28 modem,I havnt seen 1x not 1x,and I get better battery life,after 24hours (3300mah batt.) I had 1% TWS...

I am having issues as well, i haven't been able to send any MMS for the past 24 hours. Regular texts go through just fine.
I'm having big problems with this recently in a location where I usually get very strong signal with 4G. Can anyone point me to step by step instructions of how to safely and correctly flash just the modem file?

Flash in Odin.

[Q] Evo 4G on Boost Mobile Stale Data Connection (Error 104)

My data works. I'm getting 3G speeds (approx 2 mbps). There are NO other errors on this phone except the random Error 104 and only sometimes Error 67. I've updated my PRL to the 11115 version. I can leave my phone on and not touch it, the data connection randomly kicks out, goes stale, the sending arrow is active, but nothing responds. I have to cycle my data connection off then back on, and that usually fixes it.
It does this A LOT. So much so, I put a Mobile Data on/off widget on my home screen. The internet works just great when it works, how can I get the connection from basically stalling out ALL the time?
If you've had this issue, or are having this issue, please respond.
The donor phone was a w385 (which is a 1x phone I know, but again, I'm getting 3G speeds, guaranteed - when it works right, I can stream HD Youtube videos with no problem at all). How can I get this connection to go up and STAY working??
I'm pulling my hair out over this one...
Mine is doing the exact same thing. Started this morning, has been perfect for the month or so I have had it on boost. Its been driving me crazy all day.
Mine's been doing it since I got it. I was primarily in a wifi area, now I'm strictly on 3G and I can't stand it. I'm so desperate for a fix, especially if it's something I'm doing wrong...
Out of curiosity... have you changed anything, like a kernel or ROM? If it's a kernel, what did you change it to? Trying to see if we have any similarities in our setup and work backwards from there...
I haven't changed anything at all. Im running stock rom with nothing but factory updates, have done nothing to this phone except root it before it was flashed. Just went to sleep with it working fine and woke up next morning to this. I haven't been getting the error code today as much but still having to turn data off then back on a lot. im about ready to throw this phone out the window and go sign a contact lol
I'm having the same problem. I just flashed my phone over to boost mobile a few days ago and I had a hard time getting 3g data to work. I was getting 1x data only. So I got the different passwords that I needed and 3g started working. But for some reason, after about 5 min or so, the data would just become stale and nothing would work (web pages, twitter, etc) even tho the data icon and arrows were still present. Its been happening ever since I flashed. I'm not sure what's causing it but if anyone has any ideas I would greatly appreciate a response.

It's your location. I moved from Haslet, TX down to Austin, TX, and I haven't had a single problem in Austin. Just to confirm, I went back up to Haslet, BOOM instantly started happening.
It's an error with the towers in particular locations. I confirmed it by calling up Sprint, and asking them to check in Haslet's zipcode for any issues, and they did confirm there are issues in that area.
I was sooooo ready to dropkick this phone. Sorry for the unfortunate news, but with Sprint's little network upgrade, it's causing these issues.

Thanks for the update man. I was about to go crazy!! Well hopefully they can get this issue worked out pretty soon here because this is getting ridiculous
Yeah I had to update this to let those with the issue know. I couldn't stand it!
Well I'm in Atlanta and mine quite giving error codes but internet is slow as hell right now. it does it at my house, job, our wherever I'm at. 40 miles away and still does it.
That's cause you're still in the same market.

Force/increase 4G connectivity vs 3G, auto tethering when connected to power

I've got a two part question for some issues I'd like to address while on 4G (some I've called Sprint about, others I know you guys will have the answer since I'm rooted) that I hope to resolve.
My issues with Sprint is that if I'm on 3G and looking at images via websites, pics obviously load slower, but they're always nice and crisp. I notice that when I happen to be on 4G and go look at images, suddenly they load super grainy. I spoke to someone else who is also on Sprint w/ an LTE 4G phone (not a Note II, something else) who experiences the exact same problem. I've called Sprint about it, but I get the usual run around saying they're addressing the issues, fixing towers, etc. When I first started getting 4G in my area about 3 months ago, it was BLAZING fast, connected the second I came off the freeway and stayed on strong. I realize over time that I'm sharing the same signal with others, but damn.
My issues that I'm hoping you guys can assist with is in regards to the phone staying connected to to 4G more via changing thresholds. As I id before, it was awesome. Now it's gotten to the point where I or the phone have to be near a window, or occasionally I can leave it on the top edge of my couch...but if I happen to handle the phone to answer a text messages, it'll often drop back into 3G. The problem is that I use my phone tethered to my laptop for watching TV....Top Gear, Family Guy, etc that I stream. On 4G it's great, but once it drops to 3G it turns into a buffering nightmare and some shows/sites can't handle jumping around for time frames, so lets say if I'm 15 min into a show, go into 3G and come back into 4G, the show never recovers and I've got no choice but to restart the show. I'm just curious if there's a way to change at what point/signal strength that the phone wants to swap back and forth and basically ask it to stay on 4G more often than not when I'm at home where I actually get 4G.
As for tethering, I'm a stock rooted ROM using TrevEMod tethering because the stock tethering app won't stay turned on, I'm assuming due to using the stock ROM. What I'm curious about is a way to have the phone automated in that once I plug it on, the tethering app turns itself on and then back off again once unplugged from a power cord. At one point I'd used some app where it had me enter parameters to do this, but it only worked to turn on the stock tethering app which won't work.
Bottom line is I'd like my phone to stay connected to 4G more often than not, turn on tethering when plugged in and turn it off when not.
as for the tethering, if you are running the stock deodexed rom, there is a mod you can flash to make the native hotspot work then you will be able to use Tasker or however you automate it turning on. if you are running stock odexed you could always flash stock deodexed, if you were intent enough on making it work.
here is the hotspot mod: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2232553
I truly don't know if the stock ROM is odexed or deodexed, I just did a simple rooting procedure and nothing more so I could install a tethering app. Maybe I'm just being naive, but coming from my Epic days where I rooted, ROM'd, kernal'd, OC'd, etc days where I removed tons of apps, added others, etc I never was able to get battery stats/calibration to work correctly, which in turn wrecked havoc on that phone...phone would get super laggy, bog and stumble, then I'd reset the phone and I'd go from 20% battery life to 3%, then realize why the phone was freaking out. Now that I've got this Note II, it works great, I've never felt the need to OC or anything (I wouldn't mind removing stock apps but the SDX Stock App Removal Tool doesn't work), so I'm kinda hesitant in flashing any sort of ROM for fear of reliving past experiences...right now the phone simply works great, I'd just like a few simple features. Any input to sway my decision?
i hear ya, i too like a nice stable setup with everything working. your system is probably odexed if al you did was root, but if you have a file explorer app, when you go into /system/app, you will see each .apk also has an associated .odex file. the deodexed rom has the odex part added back into the apk, but otherwise is exactly the same, no tweaks or anything, every bit as stable, and with nothing removed, but it is easier to make mods for a deodexed rom, such as the hotspot mod!
the decision is yours. it is always a bit of work to flash a rom, but this is defintiely a way to keep the stabilty and reliability, and have the hotspot working the way you want it to! the rom is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2241930, if you choose to go this route. this is exactly my setup, with the hotspot mod, and it runs great.
I'll read the thread, thanks for the link. Any suggestions for something that will enable the tethering app automatically based on being plugged in, and I've had no luck finding anything in regards to people changing thresholds for the 4G connectivity.

no problem. the app Tasker from the market does things like that, i think it costs a few bucks but it's well worth it. and perhaps there are others.
for the 4G thing, i don't see any setting for that. there are other people who know a lot more about network stuff than i do. there might be a dialer code menu where you can set to receive LTE only, but sorry i can't be of more help there. good luck and have fun!

In HDR menu there is a LTE only mode..... beware you wont receive calls or texts so if you have google voice set up then perfect

[Q] LTE speed

Edit: I believe I have now tried everything.....I upped to 4.3....downgraded to 4.1.1 and wiped the the thing with every modem I could find.....call clarity is fine......it's the DL speeds......Please, if anyone has an idea? I'll try it.
running stock odexed 4.1.2 rooted.
I hadn't checked my download speeds in awhile, so I tried today. For some reason it starts at the 7Mbs and completely drops to a .43 etc. I used to get a good 16-18mbps.
I have reflashed to modem, rom, backups from several months, but the same thing. I thought it might be an ATT thing, or throttling, but the tech said no. I thought maybe just the tower by my home, work is 2 hours away. Tried at work, samething.....stumped. Check all the APN info, it's good as well. Wifi works fine....30-36mbps....... Is there a way to check if it's a hardware issue, other than bringing it in to a store?
