hi. i got a tmobile samsung galaxy s2. I am out of my warranty. i had my phone for about six month thru a warranty exchange.
I was browsing espn.com, then out of no where the phone turned itself off and started to vibrate. I have tried to power it on, and it just vibrates. it turns on a quarter way then begins to vibrate. i left the battery out since the problem started waited the whole night to pass, still just beeps.
I googled how to put phone into discovery mode, but when I do the steps, it also powers the discovery mode quarter way then turns off and starts to vibrate. Is it a sticky power button. The power button presses normally, doesnt resist when i press it.

Sounds to me like a sticky or stuck power button. If you can take it apart...clean around the button that might help. There are a few guides in the Skyrocket forum on how to do it. Search for sticky power button or look at the stickies by Vincom. I have a T989 as well and used some of these methods and it worked. Good luck!

To be honest your probably going to have to the the button replaced I had same issue I tried everything to cleaning it and around it and even prying it away from the connector and nothing worked I had to send it into Samsung and they had to replace the motherboard thankfully it was still under warranty its worth a shot to call em n ask if yours is

I had the same issue, took it apart and tried cleaning to no avail. I called a local cell repair shop and as soon as I said I had an S2 and started to describe the issue, he stopped me and said it was a short in the switch, which had to be replaced, and gave me a quote. Seems to be something of a common issue.

How much was it for the shop to fix this?
I am looking at buying an S2 for $100 that is doing this shut off & vibrate.

I got something similar happening to a S2 I have. I was using it, it just shut down and won’t boot anymore. As soon as I plug it in it'll start vibrating indefinitely, pull the battery and re-insert it, and it'll keep on vibrating indefinitely. Sometimes I see the SAMSUNG logo but that as far as I can get. RECOVERY doesn’t work, ODIN doesn’t work, no button combination works... seems kind of dead to me.
You guys think it’s worth sending it to SAMSUNG and getting a quote to get it repaired?
EDIT: sometimes i can get into download mode for about 3 seconds then it blue screens and reboots. I can get as far as pressing the VOL+ up and then reboots...
So did anyone find a solution or was it a "short in the switch"?

SOLUTION !!! Hey i share your pain... i have an
S2 as well and have been facing the same
problem... my phone is rooted so at first i
thought the problem was due to an unstable
custom rom... anyway the REAL problem is
called a "STICKY POWER KEY". all you need is a
bright light, a can of CRC (the none conductive
type) and a Phillips head screw driver.. you need
to remove the back cover of your phone, remove
your battery and or charger , sim and sd card
then remove the six screws that is holding the
phone together. after that , carefully pry open the
phone and remove the circuit board that has the
power button and the volume Buttons.. this is a
little tricky because in order to get the circuit
board out you will need to detach some
connectors.. now you need to spray some CRC
on the power button using the fine tip straw that
comes with the CRC CAN .. then you just need
to press the power button until you get tired... i
use CRC intermittently while i press, be careful
not to get too much on the circuit board tho..
when you are done , put the phone back together
and let it sit for an hour then replace the battery
and turn on your phone voila ..... feel free to
inbox me if you require further assistance...

Hi all,
I have received my new Samsung Galaxy Nexus just yesterday. When I unboxed it and turned it on it was working just fine and i managed to complete the setup. I was playing with the phone when it suddenly got stuck and just died. Nothing worked to fix the problem. I tried a battery pull, sim pull, powering it with the volume rockers, charging it the whole night (there was no indication it was charging) everything I could find in the forums, nothing worked. Eventually, my girl friend just tried to turn it on and it worked, it just started working. There was no happier man in the whole world than me.
ALAS, the problem returned and now my phone is DEAD.
the thing I noticed that in it's dead state the phone is heating when the battery is inside (not crazy hot but still hot enough to notice)
WHAT ELSE CAN I DO, PLEASE GIVE ME SOME HOPE!
Have you tried calling either your carrier or Samsung? If you just received it, presumably there's someone willing to do a return or warranty work.
unfortunately can't return
unfortunately, i can't return the device. will try contact local samsung rep to fix it but i hoped there is a quicker solution.
So it seems like the phone is still on, maybe just not booting right? Try turning it on while holding both the volume up & volume down keys. So all three buttons held down at once. That will get you into the bootloader, then just navigate with the volume keys to reboot and press the power key. Give that a try and report back.
it did not work either
the phone does not react
Try a different charger and cable.
bow chicka wow wow.
tried that
does not work
can't turn on galaxy nexus
i'm having the same problem....my phone just stunt then turn off it self, and i won't able to turn back on.... did my phone dead or just the battery problem???
Hi, today i received this T989 that has this strange behavior. When i insert the battery it will try to boot by itself without touching the power button. But then it will turn off by itself also and starts to continuosly vibrate like its trying to boot but it wont. If i try to get to download mode with the JIG it will get to download mode but once i take the JIG out it will turn off again. My question is, could that be because it is bricked? Or maybe the power button damage? Perhaps the phone got wet? The sticker is kind of red, but if it was, i dont think it was too much because ive seen worst phones inside, i mean theres no sign of damp inside. I ask because if the case is that it might be bricked i will send it to mobiletech so they can fix it. But if its hardware then i will just have an expensive lcd display for sell lol..........

Did this end up working for you? I'm having the same issue...
Fairly certain its a power button issue. Went through the same thing myself in late July. Samsung logo shows, then it attempts to boot up only to be shut down and have the vibration pulse for a long time.
If you're able to Odin it back to stock, you can try and get T-Mobile or Samsung to replace it for you. If not, mobile tech videos has a button repair service.
Best of luck guys!

Hello, the same thing happened to me. I was able to bring it back to life by removing the back plate and disconnecting the motherboard completely. Then i inserted the jigg and put the battery back in. After 2 seconds i removed the jigg and connected the usb cable. Then i opened up odin 1.85 and the yellow com part stayed on i then flashed the program and my phones been working ever since. Good luck. Let me if you try it and if it worked for you.
Mine does it too.
Definitely the power button.

Hi I'm having the same problem as the original post - what's worst is that I'm in Argentina and I bought the phone on ebay. I will attempt your solution but what is the jigg???? As scared as I am to open up my phone, I am more scared about traveling for another month without a phone! :crying::crying::crying:
Any other suggestions before I perform an operation on my phone??
Please and Thank you!
Have you tried a different battery? It sounds like a bad battery. My wife's Skyrocket was doing this until I charged her battery outside of the phone. I wouldn't open the phone until you try charging the battery.

Simple solution is to tap or beat on the power button with an eraser many times.
This problem is common on t989 and it is caused by sticky power button.
Tapping the power button with Eraser or rubber multiple times should do it.

Thanks,, It works..It wouldn't boot on just kept vibrating. I press the power button many times..and it boot it fine...:good:
Power button must be going bad on mine:silly:
Two weeks ago my galaxy just stopped working. it was at a decent battery; just stopped. I tried charging it but the phone would vibrate. phone would come on, then shut off. I tried it multiple times and same result; a few times the phone would make it to the samsung startup animation, sometimes it would just flash the samsung logo, once it compleley got to my screen start before shutting off.
I brought my phone to get fixed. It took a whole week and the guy said my phone was just not fixable. It would work for a few hours then shut off again, according to him. I suspect he didnt work much on it though as hed rather fix phones with easy problems as mine was a tough one.
I've had to replace my phone with an iphone now, but right now, out of curiosity, I completely took my phone apart, and started using tweezers to play the power on button. The camera part just broke off (not the actual camera) but now my phone is actually charging! The red light is on, and click the main button, it shows the battery being charged. This has not happened ever since the phone broke.
Am I bricked? Is there hope for this phone??? Please tell me there is lol.
EDIT: My phone seems to have restarted! Turned it on and it's asking for my simcard what is GOING ON LOL

It just randomly shut off. It was if someone would constantly be turning the phone off as soon as I turned it on. But then I couldn't even charge the phone. No red light, no screen, nothing, just vibration. I would try to turn it on sometimes it would get to the boot up, sometimes not, sometimes nothing, just a vibrate.
I literally took tweezers and lifted the green board out from around the power on button (it's an actual tiny white button on the inside). and then it randomly started working again

Could be a power button failure. Happens somewhat often.
Could be battery related too, a cheap replacement battery could strike that off.

agree with what he said, it could be a problem with the power button or battery is not working
off topic did you really get 176Mb/s download or is it fake
if its real then was it WIFI or DATA , i have never topped 50Mb/s both wifi and data) but DATA seems to be 10x faster than my wifi
My tmobile galaxy s3 was turning on by itself as soon as i put the battery in it. The phone would stay on for about 5 seconds then turn off. This repeated itself over and over again as soon as i put in the battery in.
I took it in to get repaired and the guy told me its the power switch so he replaced it.
I rooted my phone and put a 4.3 rom on it. Everything started up fine and installed properly.
2 days later the same issues on it turning on by itself and turning off. I took it in to the same shop and they are blaming me for a bad root.
Any thoughts?

It could be a problem with the power button. I had a similar problem with my gs3 when I bought it used. If you take the battery out and then put the battery back in and the phone boots up by itself without touching the power button then it might be the same problem I had..
I don't recommend this fix for everyone with a power button problem but in my case it fixed it and it's been perfect ever since I did this..
I fixed mine by taking my phone apart and taking my dremel tool with a fine grinding wheel and sanding just a millimeter or two off of the face of the internal power button. The silver power button that you see on the outside of the phone is just a cover that presses on the internal button which is just a tiny micro switch. I found that the external button was always putting pressure on the internal button and causing the phone to constantly reboot. By sanding a bit off of the internal button it gave it some space so it wasn't always putting pressure on the button. There's a few video's on youtube that show how to take the phone apart to get to the power button. It's very easy.
So I've been using my Tab S for a minimum of 3-4 hours a day since I got it in Feb.
It is the Tab S 10.5 32GB version from Best Buy SM-T800
I've never dropped it, scratched it, etc. I've been VERY careful with it.
I installed Iron Rom on it in March (before Lollipop came out), and besides one freeze per month, have had no issue with it (I've also never updated Iron Rom as it never had an issue).
This morning I used the tablet for an hour while it was plugged in (and at 100%). I then unplugged it and put it on a table. An hour later, I went to use it, and the screen stayed black when I pushed any buttons!!
So I tried holding down the power button for 30 seconds. Nothing. I tried plugging it in. Nothing. I tried holding down volume down and power button for 30 seconds. Nothing. I tried holding down all the buttons for 30 seconds. Nothing.. I tried holding volume up, down, and power. Nothing. I tried holding volume down, menu, and power. Nothing. I tried holding volume up, menu, and power. Nothing. Then I repeated the above over and over. NOTHING!
I even waived magnets over it.. (I read it on the internet).. Nothing
This tablet is my daily driver. It won't turn on, it won't show me a charging screen. I'm freaking out! There is no physical damage to the tablet, no one else has touched it.. I'm freaking out man!!
Any suggestions before I jump out the window?

Hi, I think someone had this problem a while back. No matter what he did, it didnt seem to turn on at all. It turns out, it was some sort of hardware problem and even though knox was tripped, it was repaired free of charge. The only thing I can think of is sending it to samsung or something and say something like you were trying to update through kies and this happened ao you can get it repaired since its not your fault. I am leaning towards that this has to be an hardware problem since someone (XDA user FormeriPhoney) had the same issue with his. Hopefully it goes well with your Tab S!

Argh.. I talked to Samsung.. They said I would need to send the tablet to them and I would get it fixed/replaced but it would take 2-3 weeks. They have no advanced warranty to send a replacement out first.
The other (and more scummy) option is to go to Best Buy, buy a replacement, and then return this one as a DOA. It would save me 3 weeks of being without a tablet..
This sucks
Try POWER + VOL DOWN.
Hold for at least 30 secs.
If not you may find after a day or so the battery will fully deplete and then start charging.
Do you get any response on the pc when you plug it in?

Oh.. And no response on a PC.
Yeah. This sucks. The only good news is that I actually backed up a lot to the external memory card last week as I was planning to go lollipop soon. The bad news is that all my customizations and other stuff is not saved (book marks in books I'm reading, etc). My titanium backup is from the first week I got my tablet.
But this is exactly why I won't get a phone without an external memory card. I would have lost everything.

IT"S ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I woke up this morning,, resigned to no tablet.. still debating on going to Best Buy and getting a new one.. But I have 12 models coming in today for auditions.. So really don't have time.. But I NEED a tablet for notes with these auditions.
I walk over to the tablet laying dead on the cable.. and try plugging it in... and suddenly.. 0% comes on the screen.. it's sooo beautiful.. I want to make out with the tablet.. My heart leaps with happiness..
I turn on the tablet.. and it boots!!!!! It gets into Android.. and Nova Prime pops on the screen! But.. just as I couldnt get any happier.. it shuts down... It doesnt like booting at 0%.. So I wait another 3 min, half breathless... 1%!!! And I boot again. This time it sticks and I'm able to boot successfully into Android.
So here is my question. WTF happened? How do I avoid this?? Not being able to do a hard reset is some really mess up [email protected]#$%, If I was on a plane or other kind of trip, I would have been pissed... Let alone the wasting of literally 2-3 hours last night trying every single button combination for 2-3min at a time.
I'm surprised hard reset didn't work. I'd try it now it's working just so you know what to expect when you need it.
It may just be a one off. My tablet went into sd card mode once for no reason and that scared the heck out of me. I couldn't do anything. Left it overnight and after the battery ran down it started charging and then booted.
Never done it since.

Yup. Holding down the vol - and power after 20 seconds rebooted the tablet.
I would kill for a hard reset pinhole in the tablet.. Or a faster way to quick drain the battery.
Does the microusb port supply power when the tablets is turned off, if it does connect an usb device that will drain the power faster, like an portable hdd.

I've never known the hard reset not to work, no matter what state the tablet has been in and I've bricked mine God knows how many times.
Only when it dropped into sd card mode did it not work.
