Just recently acquired a g2.
Im having a problem with the screen where after revealing keyboard and then closing the screen jumps back after scrolling.
I don't know if it is something with using custom ROMs on the phone or could be the ribbon cable going bad.
Seems to happen worse and better depending on the ROM.
CM7 was almost impossible to use the screen without everything being long press with only a tap

Found the problem in case anyone finds something similar:
The ribbon cable had a spot worn out from opening and closing keyboard over the years. So I guess it was grounding out on the base of the phone causing the screen to act up when touching. In case u don't know that cable provides input and feedback to motherboard.
Solution:
Just took apart phone and removed motherboard to expose problem area. Cut a piece of electrical of standard width with about 4mm tall and covered area. Works perfect now.

I've been having some problems with my phone and I'm starting to thing it's the ribbon cable.
The first issue is that the left edge of my touch screen does not respond.
I didn't even know anything was wrong with it because of how slim the non-responding section is untill I tried to play backstab and couldn't push the continue button at the bottom of the screen. After a little more inspection i've found it impossible to drag up the notification bar when in landscape.
I wasn't fully sold until I opened up the sketchbook app and saw that I couldn't draw on the edge of the screen.
The second issue is that the trackpad button seems less responsive when pushed, but this may just be my imagination.
Any possible solutions? I purchased the phone second hand, and so I don't have a warranty. Would HTC fix it? (Even if they do charge a fee)

Hey - did you ever get this sorted out? I'm having a similar issue and was wondering if you fixed it and, if so, how.
Buy a new digitizer/or a broken phone for parts. Should come with a new ribbon cable. What I did for my g1 anyways. Check it out. Do your research for teardown videos and be super careful sliding the new ribbon cable into its home. They rip in half ez.

When closed my screen works just fine, and when I open for the keyboard it STILL works just fine, except that the whole screen shifts upward, so that part of the taskbar is actually off of the screen. If I open it slowly it seems like about at 10% open the screen flips horizontal, as it should, but then at about 80% of the way open the whole screen shifts upward until part of it is offscreen. Its not nonfunctional at all, but it is a nuisance, especially when playing any games I have the hardkeys setup as a controller. I've tried a full wipe and rom re-install and that didn't fix it. Also it seems like I've had to do a factory wipe more than once recently because the Home and Search touch areas have stopped working. Is there a weird software glitch going on or is my touchscreen on the way out?
I'm either going to just replace the screen for 35 bucks because its already kinda screwy, but if that won't also solve the weird screen shift issue ill just buy a new phone, any ideas?

Ok - so I think its hardware because the screen shifts even when the phones still booting. Would a new lcd fix this maybe?

I had the exact same problem. Your issue is in your ribbon cable, I was able to get my phone replaced but if that isn't an option for you, you can buy a ribbon cable and follow a very easy tutorial to install it

awesome, I've taken apart the phone a few times before, so now that I know the issue I can repair it finally! thank you so much for replying!! Which Ribbon cable are we talking about?
It is the ribbon cable that connects the screen to the keyboard through the z-hinge. I've never replaced it myself, but if your phone is completely normal closed and then distorts as it opens, then it definetely sounds like the ribbon cable has bad contact as it's stretched. It's really one of the only things it can be, if it were your lcd then the distortion would persist even in portait I would think

I must agree with the above poster, seems like its the ribbon too!
hey guys yestrerday my phone took a path for the worst
i was mad at something and so i banged my phone against the table *anger issues. Now the phone turns on but its all black screen and sometimes partially gray and partially black. I can hear the volume when i press it and the phone vibrates and rings for calls but i cant see nothing its all dark.
i assume its not a software problem...rather hardware. Did i break the screen or disconnect a ribbon from the board to the screen
i have a G2 obviously with ics
more than likely one of those options. may be hard to diagnose it until you open it up.
even then it may not be obvious if its the screen or flex cable, but im guessing its one of them.
good luck!
I opened it and found out that all the plugs/ribbons are connected.
I think the ribbon cable can have wires that are severed inside, despite the shielding still being intact.
Can it be possible that the screen is broken becuase only the screen is black i can play music because i remember where i put the widget.....so can it be the screen because i dont think its a ribbon
Both the lcd and ribbion can have the same effect. I can't tell you which one is bad on your end, but I can say that with all my years fixing slider phones it almost never is the lcd

So what ur saying is its not the screen
Can it still be the screen although i took it out and it dosent look broken, take a look:
Not saying it isn't the screen I'm just saying that it more than likley is the flex cable, harder to replace and about 35 usd vrs 20 for an lcd. Take your pick but if it were me id go flex cable

I've tried many solutions, I completely wiped and reflashed different roms. I've also repartitioned my SD (doubt that would do much) .
and still my button's wont work.
Has there been reports of physically damaged bottom buttons? I see no damage whatsoever also lights up perfectly.
Just an idea!
Please help me, its the only phone I currently have in my apartment. Any help or suggestions would be amazing thank you !
Only thing I can think of if there is no damage to the digitizer part would be damage to the ribbon cable that connects the digitizer to the rest of the phone.

That's what I was thinking... is it difficult to open the phone up ? or is very sophisticated with the amount of screws?
Dude I had/have the same issue. I opened up my phone and put it back together. It started working better now. But whenever it stops working momentarily I just lock and unlock the screen.
there is a seperate flex cable for the buttons, it could be this or it could be the digitizer, either way relativley cheap and easy to replace. you can't always see the problem so just opening it up and looking may not tell you the problem.
but like strawmetal said, if there is some corrision on the contact points or some other intermediate problem, just opening the phone, disconecting it, cleaning things up, and putting it back together may fix your issues

Came down to once yesterday. Earlier I even had a thin horizontal strip on the screen where touch wouldn't work. I had a tough time accepting/canceling dialog boxes. This is no longer an issue. Hope the bottom capacitatives don't show any more problems today. Then I'll be back onto the rooted side of android.

EDIT: I got a lot of ghost activity on myscreen today. Fixed by lock and unlock but goes back to ghosting in a minute.
Today I didn't have any issues, phone was working normally, no unresponsive screen at all, capacitive buttons also worked well. It is puzzling...

n then i went to settings and developers options then i ticked the SHOW VISUAL TOUCH FEEDBACKS and POINTER LOCATION.. n on the bottom of my screnn i can see two DOTS (touches which inturn is genereating the pointer location and the visual touch feed back)
any sugesstions??
is it hardware problem or software problem
??
Had a similar problem with my old HTC Hero back in the day, the difference though was the the bottom of the digitizer (the part that registers the touch) didn't work at all, it happened slowly but in the end it was like that, it began by simulating touches and at last stopped working all together.
I fixed it by replacing the digitizer that I bought off ebay for a few dollars, I have no idea if that is possible on your device, but it sure sounds like it is a hardware problem.
Best of luck

Im having a similar problem, whenever I put pressure on the bottom right side of the phone (opposite of charger slot) it make my screen do the same thing, except it always happens at the very bottom right of the screen and it messes everything up, and it also messes up the soft keys, like I try an load an app an it starts spamming the back/search button and trolls me everytime its EXTREMELY annoying to do anything, thank god mx player has a screen lock otherwise streaming videos would be near impossible, I tried putting tape in the same spot it happens under the hard case and it's actually pretty effective it only ever happens now unless I really grip the thing.
I have similar problem....sometimes phone generates random touches even if I am not holding it...but fortunately only sometimes
