Hi All,
I got my Xperia ZL some 3 weeks ago, and since I'm still within my return period, I wanted to see if anyone else is having problems with frequent µSD card disconnects - to get a feeling for whether this is a firmware issue (correctable via upgrade) or I have a dud.
I have been fairly unsuccessful in getting my music synchronized with iTunes on my Mac. Although part of the problem is the horrors of the Sony Media Bridge application, the real issue is that my memory card keeps disconnecting while files are written to it! It reconnects a second later, but then Android keeps "Checking for errors" for some time before it becomes available again. Meanwhile, the synchronization stops.
I've also tried TuneSync from the Android store, with similar results. This application lets you synchronize in two ways: via Wi-Fi or by mounting the memory card to your computer (either using Mass Storage mode on the phone, or by physically removing it and using a memory card reader). WiFi sync always fails for the reason above, as does syncing in Mass Storage mode. If syncing via a memory card reader, the sync completes, but then there are all kinds of issues when reinserting the card into my phone, while TuneSync is processing the wired sync data.
My card is a SANDisk 64GB class 10, but I've also tried a SANDisk 32GB class 6 card with similar results.
Let me know if you have seen anything smilar - and better yet - if you have managed to get around it somehow.
Failing that, I'll probably return this phone in favor of a HTC One... (I prefer the ZL, but not if it's not working!)
Have the same problem. Read somewhere that there are problem with SanDisk ultra cards.

I've used the same card in my Nokia 808 PureView (Symbian) for nearly a year without any such issues... So there is obviously something specific to the Xperia and/or Android that does not jive with these cards.
Also, my other card (the 32GB class 6 one), although SANDisk, is not "SANDisk Ultra".
Good pointer though! I'll try to dig up some cards from other brands to have a go!
Thank you! :good:

This is interesting. I've now seen 2 dead Patriot memory cards in my husband's ZL ... switched to a Kingston card in that phone now & will see if the problem continues. I'm currently using a Samsung 32gb card in my own ZL and haven't had any problems (I've had the phone for a few weeks).
No issues here
I've been using my sandisk 64 gb microSD (Class 10) on my ZL without any issues for over a month. Before, I had used it on my note2 for 5 months with no issues. Its strange many people are having issues with sandisk cards. But, I can tell u that its not an issue specific to Z/ZL, it's rampant across the recent Samsung phones too (note2/GS3)! I guess it must be a bad batch of cards by sandisk or something. Btw, I'm on rooted stock rom with locked BL & only formatted my sdcard once using phone (ZL) before using it. I also have a 32gb sandisk (class10) & 16gb sandisk (class 4) microSD cards working just fine on my other devices.

Hey guys I have searched and found nothing. The last few days when I wake my phone up, up in the corner it will show sd card unexpectedly removed then a few seconds later it will go to the prepping sd card or whatever it says. A few times I have gone to my music and pictures and nothing is there but I just put it asleep wake it up and its loading up my stuff. I know it's a Samsung think as my S2 did it and my S3 did it once. Anybody else having the same problem? It worked fine up until the last few days

Was experiencing the same problem and the frequency of seeing "preparing SD card" was beginning to increase over the last few days. I tried formatting in the phone and formatting on the pc but neither helped. In desperation I changed cards from a 32gb Sandisk Ultra UHS-1 card to a 16GB TRanscend Class 6 card and my problems seemed to have stopped (over the last 12 hours or so). Haven't seen "Preparing SD Card" since switching. What types of cards were you guys running? Am wondering if I just go a bum card (works ok in the pc) or if there is a problem with the class of card or a problem with my phone. Don't really know where to go from here besides leaving the 16gb card in it.
I am using a Sandisk Ultramobile 32GB card, and I haven't had any problems with it at all.
I use iSyncr and store about 20GB of music in Alac format on it from my iTunes library, and have iSyncr set to display a notification when the Android media scanner is active, and I haven't seen any unusual scanning, or unmounting/preparing activity.

64gb uhs1 here so far no problems.
For me, that was always a sign of a failing SD card.
Thank you for confirming that the Note 2 works with UHS-1 cards. I figured as much since I have seen a number ofpeople mentioning that these are the cards they are using. A bit miffed at the problems I am having. Guess I'll see if I can exchange.
I'm having a problem with my free space not showing up properly. I have a 32gb class 10 that show ~5gb in one app and ~15gb in another. I had some corrupt files the other day so I backed it up and formatted it. So I think my card is going bad.

Had the same issue with my S3.
Turned out that the SD card was dying, this caused it to be unmounted by itself and then mounted again (sometimes showing notification “sd card removed unexpectedly”), hence triggering the media scanning process.
I created an application to monitor how many times the SD card was removed, and turned out to be unmounted every ~3 mins!!!
I then bought a new Transcend 32GB Class 10 card (made in Korea), and until now, this never happens, no reports from the application whatsoever, and no media process eating my battery.
I just published this app in the play store now, this is the link:

My phone just started having this problem on Friday... it doesn't let the phone sleep...happens probably 1 out of 4 times when I turn the phone screen on. Went to sleep during the night with 88% on the battery and 6 hours later my phone was at 55% and I had a message saying the SD card might be corrupted. Would you like to format it? Media process woke up my phone for 2 hours, so is it time for a new SD card? I'm gonna check out this SD card app I saw in this thread. Any feedback would be appreciated.

This seems to now be a "known issue" (as in here on the forum) with specifically the SanDisk 32GB UHS-1 Class 10 red/gray cards and Samsung phones. I had the same problem pop up out nowhere after using the card just fine for a couple of months. I switched this SanDisk card with a Patriot 32GB Class 4 card that was in my Acer A500 tablet, and now both devices are perfectly happy. My Acer A500 has absolutely no problem with the SanDisk card, so it doesn't appear to be a failing SD card issue. I tested it like a dozen times before reformatting it and putting it in the Acer A500.
There's a far more extension discussion about this on the T-Mobile Note 2 forum:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2031009
I thought I would start a thread on which Micro SD cards were recommended vs. those that fail early or are simply not compatible. I saw a thread earlier that appeared to show that some cards (and sizes) were better than others.
I can report that the Samsung 64GB card (says Class 10, HC, 24MB Read, 7MB Write) does NOT work in this tablet. I was able to use it just fine in my Note 2, and a laptop. However, the card doesn't work properly in my 2014 Note 10.1. An older Pansonic 16GB MicroSD card worked just fine however. I've tried formatting it in other machines, and it's still a bust. Currently, these cards are selling like wildfire on Ebay for $30.
So, what DOES work for a 64GB card? Any help is appreciated by myself and I'm sure a lot of others reading this forum.
Thanks in advance.
I have got a SanDisk 64GB card in mine. Also got the same type in My Note 3.
The SD card issue seems a bit odd, both of my cards were also fine in my older Note 10.1 and the Note 2. I've never had a problem with either of them
Samsung 64GB works just fine.
I have a 64GB Samsung MicroSD and it works just fine, haven't had to do anything to it, worked right out of the box.
Its a Samsung 64GB Class 10, UHS-1, Grade 1, 70MB/s MicroSDXC Pro Memory Card
I always buy memory cards directly from Amazon because there are a lot of fakes out there, so I know for sure this is a genuine product.
This is the exact one I purchased

i've tested my 64GB sandisk on my gn8 for a week now with no issues at all. one day after being put back in the gn10.1 2014 and it's acting up again. files, fail to delete, wrong size reported, inaccessable, etc. the 32GB sandisk works fine. both are uhs-1 formated exfat. take it out without reformatting and it works fine on my gn8 and pc. put it back on the gn10.1 and it won't mount without a reboot.

Hey guys, thanks for the info. After some research I discovered that this was indeed a fake card I ordered from Ebay. Looks like this is a common problem as the packaging is *almost* perfect and you really can't tell the difference without some serious research. Luckily, the seller refunded the full amount back to me. Based on your feedback here I've ordered a SanDisk Ultra from Amazon.
Thanks for the help and & Happy Thanksgiving!

A really good way to check them is to simply try to fill it up. Only 4G of data will be saved and readable, whereas the other 60GB is corrupt.

It's sad that a lot of people get duped into buying fakes. But sites like ebay don't/can't do anything about it.
Memory cards/Usbs should only be bought from reputable sellers only (Amazon, Currys, Play.com etc) as there are wayyyy too many fakes out there.
I'm currently using a Transcend 64GB SDXC UH-1 Class 10 card which was formatted using the tablet.
It works fine except for one annoying problem. When transferring large, singe or multiple files, say 1.5GB+ HD movie or a huge amount of photos, from internal to external storage, the device would freeze. After it starts up again i notice that i can no longer access my SD card even though the device says it's still mounted. The only way i can fix this is by removing and reinserting the card or rebooting the device. Although there's no problem transferring files from a computer straight to the SD card.
Anybody encountered a problem like this? Is there anyway to fix it?

Yes, I'm having the same issue. Except the SD card will randomly lose the files even though it still shows the card is still mounted. Just recently I was watching a movie from the sd card and this happened.
I am using a SanDisk that was being used in my note 2 for the past year (never had problems with it before).
This is especially frustrating when trying to sync files with Plex.

Same for me
I know I'll sound like a noob, but my 32gb Samsung micro sd card just doesn't seem to work on galaxy note 10.1 2014, yet it worked perfectly fine on my previous note. Would i have to format the card on my computer? A little bit annoying since I don't have a reader for it.
My Sandisk does not work
I have a SanDisk Ultra 64 GB microSDXC Class 10 UHS-1 Memory Card 30MB/s SDSDQUA-064G-U46A that has a lot of problems working in my GN 10.1-14. It has worked fine for a year in the old Note 10.1. The New Note would not even format it. Formatted it in my Galaxy S4, and it kind of works. Often it simply reports no files, although it will report in Settings the correct size and space available. Sometimes I have to reboot several times for the card to work. then sometimes I will try to open a file and get an I/O error. Then sometimes random reboots, especially if I try to unmount it.
I use a Samsung Pro 64GB microSDXC (UHS-1) Class 10 card (MB-MGCGB/AM) reformatted to FAT32. Works great. I've been using the same type card on my LG Optimus G for almost 8 months 100% problem free (also formatted to FAT32). I did have issues with a SanDisk Ultra 32GB in that same phone that used to dismount itself all the time and I know others that have had issues with SanDisk cards in GoPros as well.
ok, so which one of these sandisk ultra microsd cards will work in the 10.1 2014 edition, and what is the difference between them?

Hi there,
One of the biggest frustrations for me with my new HTC M8 has been SD cards.
All of my usual cards I use in various devices have all been too slow for Zoe so I invested in a Class 10 32GB. Get the same warning 'To enjoy a better Zoe experience, please use a higher class SD card' or a message very similar.
I've also had a few times when my SD card has become corrupt at various times.
Am I alone in experiencing these problems?

It may be the way the card is formatted.
I always reformat my card FAT32 before putting it into a new device. Once I put it in the new device, I then have the phone reformat it also... then move everything on to the card...
Hi,
I did all the steps you mentioned. Anybody recommend a fast card that dosent bring up the zoe pop up ?
Oh' Thanks for all your help.
I have the same problem with mine, it half corrupted itself today after i opened the camera app, the camera froze and the phone unmounted the sd card, i removed it and put it back in numerous times and it wouldn't read, had to put it into a friends Z1 to get the card back working, but now all the photos are deleted, luckily google backs them up automatically.
How could HTC mess up such an important feature on a flagship phone.
Mine does not have this pop up.
I am using a Sony Micro SD HC with a 10 in a circle (Class ten is that?), i1, 40mb/s, model SR-32UY
I bought it from tesco, 32gb, for about 20 I think, in the UK.
Zoe's record perfectly.
I formatted the card in my phone on Venom Rom.
Anyone else getting this error? I have a 64M SanDisk that was working just fine in my note 2. I put it in my notes and I continually get this error. I unmounted, removed and power cycled my phone but it comes back any time I try to access the card. Any ideas?
I would backup the contents of it onto your computer and reformat the card. Then try it.
I've been getting this error when my phone wakes after being idle for a long time. I've tried reformatting the card but I'm skeptical that will fix the problem. According to many online threads, this issue has been widespread across a number of devices, and my card (Sandisk 64GB Ultra CL10) works fine in other devices. Will report back.
This is a common problem with the Samsungs...There is a proper process, as follows.
First, go ahead and do a fresh format of the card and get the contents onto the card.
Second, turn the phone completely off AND REMOVE THE BATTERY.
Put the card into the card slot, replace the battery and power the phone back on.
This has been my process since the sII, and haven't had any issues, save a few completely corrupted cards which were unsalvageable. There is an issue where the card receives current from the battery, and in some cases can corrupt the card and in even fewer (but still entirely plausible cases) completely fry the SD.
I'm not sure why Samsung hasn't caught the issue, or even acknowledged it, but this process avoids it entirely.
Hope this helps
Thanks, I tried that but it made no difference.
The uSD card continues to work fine in my other devices, and diagnostic tests reveal no problems with it, so I'm confident the card itself is ok.
I'm trying another card now (this one 32GB), but I'm guessing the problem will occur with that one too.

Sounds a lot like what happened to my last card in my Note 2. I was able to get a replacement under warranty and haven't had a problem with it happening since.
Well, my guess was wrong. The 32GB card I switched to is actually working fine--no recurrences of the unexpected-removal error.
So I guess there's a problem with the 64GB card, even though it was fine until I switched it from the Note 3 to the Note 4 (and I handled the card carefully).
Good thing, though. It's easier to RMA the uSD card than to exchange the Note 4.

Yup, SanDisk Ultra 64GB. I had no problems with it in my Note 3, though.
I have a scan disk 64GB card that I took out of my Note 2 (rooted) and put in my Note 4. I started getting random unmounted errors.
Finally last night I pulled out the SD card and threw it in my computer. Sure enough it came up and said I had some corrupted files. I fixed the files. Dumped the SD card to my HD and then formatted the card in my phone. Then I put my music, pics, videos, and a couple of files for apps aback on the disk. So far no more SD card issues.

Flickr gives you a free terabyte of storage that you can auto-sync your phone's photos to. That way you don't have to buy a large SD card, and you don't have to worry as much about losing photos due to disk corruption.
Yeah, I tried formatting my SanDisk several times and kept getting the same issue any time the phone tried to access data or write to it. I put in an old 32M cheapo brand and have had no issue at all

I'm happy to report that the RMA replacement for my Sandisk Ultra 64GB uSD card arrived today (the replacement is a Pixtor rather than an Ultra), and so far it's working flawlessly.
I have been dealing with this error with my Sandisk 64gig also. Didn't have a problem with it on my Note3. I have reformatted to numerous formats. Anyone know of a specific one that works. Always have had trouble out of Sandisks on Samsung galaxy products. Some I don't , but I have had this problem on at least 5 different devices. I have always read that the thing to do is go with Samsung brand SDs. The new 64gig Samsung is apparently faster than any other micro SD. However, since I have paid for this one, I'd like to use it.
I don't know if this is a known issue with this phone. Have never seen a SD card slot like this before (inconvenient, but secure).
So my phone recognizes the card, but I will often see a message pop up saying it got removed, or that it was mounted.
I admit that the microSD card in question MAY be problematic. My dashcam didn't like it, so I had to replace it with another. However, on my Asus TF300T it was fine and when I ran a SD card test on my computer, it found no fault.
If nobody has a similar problem, I will simply blame my card.
That was my and many other Zenfone2 users' problem mainly with but not limited to SanDisk MicroSDs. I've changed it out for a Samsung EVO and this "unexpected dismount" no longer occurs.
