Hi, I want to flash a custom rom for a family member but they're not too tech savvy so I'm looking for something similar to stock touchwiz but with wifi tether etc, also something that provides decent battery life. Also if anyone has any info on kernels that would be helpful. Thanks!!

Forgive my assumption, but your information shows your a Tmobile guy. Is the family member you are trying to flash with Sprint and is their device a Note 2? You might be in the wrong place.
If not, the stock experience is quite good out of box. If they don't know what they are doing, I'd skip setting them up with a custom rom unless you know what you are doing and are close so you can fix any problems that come up. I have the same challenges with my family and since they can barely use their phone's capabilities as delivered, it just isn't worth setting them up with a custom Rom until they at least have mastered the basics of what they have originally received.
If you are looking for the standard tweaks available, just about any of the Roms in the Android Development forum will work. From what I've read, we've got a great bunch of developers working on the Sprint variant of the Note 2. I use Whomp 3.4 presently, and possibly forever, but I read great things about almost all of them. Just don't have the time to evaluate once I found one that met my needs.
As for kernels, the stock kernel works great out of the box. I've tried others, but the need to Tweak between updates was a time sink that I decided to skip for the future. Best is the enemy of good enough, and when good enough is actually great, what's the point? Particularly if your installing for a family member. They won't thank you for causing their phone to reboot randomly.
Good luck.

I used to have sprint but canceled my service with them. TBH the only reason they want a custom rom is because WiFi tether just can't seem to work

you can keep the phone stock rooted and just use treve wifi mod, thats what i do. you cant actually use the phones built in hotspot menu in the setting but just run it like an app and you have wifi hotspot. there are even settings in it where you can set up passwords and see a list of who has jumped on your network and whatnot
I just followed the advice from qbking77 and it was pretty simple

i know its been asked but i'm starting the discussion. there has to be an easy way to flash all these great i9100 roms on to our tmobile t989. i would think its mostly a kernal difference and some hardware buttons. i say this because i love hyperdroid roms (mostly wanted s2 for use of his rom) .with the hd2 all builds worked on all phones (europe, asia, usa, etc) no matter the model number.
i am starting the discussion and will help to develop with my time and limited knowledge (i need people who know more about building these roms) a simple zip file to be flashed through cwm. most builds use a base version, then have roms and etc over the top of them. so there must be a way to find a base version you like for any i9100, flash over cwm, then flash a "kernal" of sorts that "adds in or takes out" what is needed for android to run on our t989.
any thoughts? anyone want to discuss this? i have the time (as much as possible, my gf keeps saying "why dont you just make your own and quit bit$%ing").
also i saw a kitchen for building roms for s2 but not sure if its t989 compatible.
lets get to work, our phone is new but the i9100 is already cooking along, we can piggy back and make our phones just as awesome!
Reading from the tittle of the thread, please dont do it! Just fall back..

So I understand you're not going to try to flash it but you're wrong about the major hurdle: Its the different processor. Since we have different hardware we're not talking about a slightly different radio, we're talking about two completely different devices branded as the same thing.
i realize its hardware, but isn't that all controlled by the kernal? it holds the drivers. it would be like "porting" take a rom everyone loves, make the hardware drivers work, then flash. like i said i'm limited knowledge but i want to start work on this. its a hardware thing i understand. but there must be something we can do to ease the process.
To sum up what Kevin said : It's like flashing a sensation rom on our sgs2...(Right?)
but sense has been ported to other non htc devices. my point is it can be done. we should talk about it and get a discussion going. i'd be more then happy to help "port" other roms that are out for s2 varients

Porting sense to non-HTC phones requires massive amounts of work and open source. Yes, it is possible but whether or not its feasible is a different option. You're right that the kernel is the main difference but even so its much more work than simply adjusting the kernel since there are soooooo many differences. Cashy put it well: you're porting a ROM from effectively a Samsung device to an HTC device. The only similarities are the screen and touchwiz. If you want to give it a go, I'd wait until we have a full ODIN tar to help you recover your phone because you're going to get a few bricks.
Well good luck to us all.
got my T989 few days ago, and I find it much better than the usual i9100 that everyone have on every aspect, except for the lack of support and android development. I regret I based my decision solely on technical spec rather than checking the verity of available firmware and development.
I live and use this phone in Israel, and that stock T-mobile rom I got with it is loaded with lots of irremovable T-mobile apps. Those are irrelevant for me. But the real issue is about the RTL support. I now have to read Hebrew text backwards (taht ekil hpargarap eloh a daer ot yrT) in some text fields. And it won't let me use the mobile hotspot by saying my sim card is not supported. I can't see why it connects to the internet (it does, checked my APN settings twice and it configured right) but won't let me use that hotspot.
Can't these changes in the level of GUI be implanted from other equivalent roms as source code? Does these minor changes take so much work? Before overclocking my phone to 1.89 Ghz I would rather get the basic functions done.
And I'm willing to donate, and to help in any way to promote this project.
I tried a similar thing with my LG optimus 2x (I have model p-999 which is really t-mobile's g2x) by accident. Even though the variations are named optimus 2x and the specs are almost identical, firmwares just aren't compatible with one another.
I flashed a optimus 2x firmware (p-990) to my p999 and I bricked my phone. At this point, even clockworkmod could not recover it. I had to manually partition a t-mobile g2x recovery file one by one on DOS mode to fix this. Finding this solution was like finding a needle in a haysack. I thought there was a good chance that I flushed $400 down the drain when this happened.
So, lol I dont recommend it knowing that gs2 is even a higher price to pay. Hope this helped.
it's something that I almost gave a try and then decided to check in here to see what people say about flashing these roms.. lol. Thanks guys
Lol I actually did try to flash cm for the i9100 on this phone, but thankfully it only gave me an error and didn't actually go through with the flash. (I had literally gotten the phone the day before too lmao)

It sounds like youve got porting perfectly understood. The devs havent been able to do it, you should explain how porting works to them.
The problem is not just the kernel. The software is most likely compiled specifically for the processor. If you were talking about linux . . . it would be easy because the source code is there and you can compile it for whatever processor you want, but it seems Samsung is a a company who believes in leeching off off open source and mixing their proprietary crap in it then keeping the sources closed and giving the open source community the finger. Just look at how they handled the vertical lines screen issue. Its all about money to Samsung.

Dude no need to be a punk, I seriously dislike people like you who make forums negative. He was asking a question and is trying to learn, which is more than some people do. Keep your negative comments to yourself. If you cant say anything nice don't say anything at all.
This thread was started in 2011, and hasn't been active in over 7 months. There is no need to bring it back from the dead to argue with someone.
Its not as impossible as it may seem(for the experienced dev) if u look in the dev section android88 has ported hellybean from the 9100. I'm learning & I've only gotten a bootloop at worse, haven't bricked yet lol.

It is possible with a port. The thing that brocks your phone in flashing an i9100 ROM is the kernel. If you switched the kernels, you'll just have a boot loop or no boot. Flashing another devices kernel is the killer.

Its just logic. If its that easy try it and youll learn the inside out of why. Put in a similar amount effort you are asking the dev to put in by learning something about the challenges you are asking the dev to overcome instead of assuming devs arent putting enough thought into it

I think our development fora should be linked with the other 7105 variants, there is significant progress towards CM10 and other AOSP in the AT&T forum.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2018411
But, since there are four (ours, international 7105, AT&T, and Sprint), the devs are scattered, when unity would breed much more success. Our accessories is already linked, how about a linked development (not just the unused developers only forum) or moving threads like this to the linked dev forum? Either way, maybe this will help bring attention to the progress that has been made.
As long as i get aosp before the verizon or sprint varients. Glad to know progress is being made.

This isn't and shouldn'tbe about first, besides once one 7105 variant has a working device tree, we all do.
I am trying to get an idea of what the differences are between the phones. From what I gather so far is there is the international 7105 and its variants which are the tmo att and sprints versions and they are all gsm? Then there is the 7100 international and its variant which would be Verizon and they are cdma? But I thought that sprint was cdma carrier so wouldn't the sprint be in with the 7100 version?
From what I understand the physical and specs are the same for all the phones and the hardware is the same except the radio difference between the two. so the software is the major difference. I know on my last phone the sgs2 the att and tmo versions were almost identical twins the two were able to use roms interchangeably without porting except for minor kernel differences. In the end the only problem was the rotation was messed up. and it was fixed by using a the kernel that was native to the device. Like if you used a att rom on a tmo phone you had to use a tmo kernel with it. and also finally someone came up with a flashable .zip fix for it. The .zip fixed the rotation and also the build.prop so that the right device was in the build.prop. So that is what I foresee here in this situation. It will take time but it will happen. I know that we got some real good devs on the tmo side I haven't checked out the other variants yet but I am sure they got some real good devs too. A phone like this was bound to attract top quality people ( and schmucks like me too) I would definitely like to see a dev only subforum for all the devices or even a forum it doesn't have to be a sub forum because then the info will be fragmented because which forum do you put it in tmo, att, sprint, international. I say make a 7105 variant dev only forum for them to talk and work out some kick ass stuff. Like AOSP and cm and of course the ultimate AOKP. And whatever else they come up with.
7105 = international LTE
Variants include:
AT&T
T-mobile
Sprint
Verizon
7100 = international GSM
7102 = Chinese GSM/CDMA dual SIM
Differences include radio hardware/software.

Coming from HTC since the beginning of my smartphone career... I'd don't know jack about Samsung, Odin, and some other differences but isn't there a way to compile roms without the radio lol? Thta would fix alot. I'm sure there might be various issues between carriers but it should work. I get cmda and dual sim models would be different but at&t model should be able to share. As someone meantioned before, once at&t subforum has their branch... we will too. It just seems that mods separated the forums to cut down on confusion for the end user but it hurts development collaboration between development and hurts the end users who read directions and don't flash stuff blindly. I'm just not used to seeing all this talent wasted by being segregated like this. Obviously there is a reason I'm not seeing... whether due to total incompatibility or something else. It couldn't be that simple, could it?! In the meantime, I'm gonna continue to read up on Samsung development and see if there is anything I can do to contribute... no matter how small or insignificant

there is a way to compile without radios, most of the ROMs do not have radios, or they are optional. Problem is since the radio hardware is different, the kernel needs to be recomplied for the 7105/variants. I will say if they get it on 7105 then AT&T, T-mobile, and Sprint should be easy to get working (sprint would require blobs, T-Mo and AT&T should work out of the box. Verizon would work only if they 1) crack the bootloader or 2) make a special k-sec version of the rom. There is a new dev section that crosses all boards so that should help the devs some. Basicaly if we get 7105 AOSP we get TMO/AT&T/Sprint and possibly Verizon.
I saw on g+ that they got a bootoble version of cm 10 on the note 2 I do not know which model and it was not a dd but it boots. That is a promising sign. We will have it soon. I cant wait. For now I am sticking with stock until a working aokp comes out. That is what I did with my sgs2 when we got ics. I didnt even bother rooting it till aokp came out.

To my understanding, yes, you can. I myself am on NOTEorious Prime rom which is based on the N7105 firmware but was made for ATT, all needed to do is flash the Tmo radio to get data and since I like to overclock my devices I also flashed the Note2Core kernel which will work with N7100 and N7105 roms; and on top of that I flashed an AOSP theme made by foreverloco since I can't stand Touchwiz. Overall, the UI looks clean just like AOSP (but of course, it ain't the same:crying but you can also see some elements of Touchwiz here and there...
I mean, this is just for now until a more stable port of cm10 shows up for our Note2, like you, I also like to have a clean rom and not layer upon layer upon layer.

Audio seems to work fine. You have to make 2 phone calls upon boot in order for calls to work correctly And in the beginning of a call it sounds really low so you have to toggle the volume during a call and the. It will be regular and loud again. Otherwise seems to run great. I didn't flash any modems or extra kernels besides updated one that was in the thread.
Im looking for a rom to fill my needs, A rom with working wifi tether, usb tether, s-beam, Wifi direct, overclocking capabilities and maybe some of the stock TW sg3 features like screen on when viewing screen, call when you put to ear and things like that.
I know im asking a lot but I figured I'd ask to see what everyone else is running with high demands like me.
( by the way, I'm used to running aosp roms since I dont really care for TW rom lay outs, Unless thats a simple fix like running a custom launcher?)
Any input is greatly appreciated!

Before this gets locked by our mods.... go into dev section, check out roms (whats working/not and screenies are in thread. And can skim a page or two (towards end) see what issues are popping up.) Find one, flash and give a test drive and form your own opinion. Everyone uses phone differently and has different experiance with roms. So try for yourself. I run and personally love the peoples rom. If ya dont like a rom wipe and flash another. Rinse and repeat till you find your happy place.
Btw, not trying to come off like a d!ck. So dont take it that way. We seem to get a lot of these threads. All end up locked.
Lock me up please!

I use FreeGS3 so I get all those features and combined with Ktoonsez Kernel so I can overclock and stuff, you should try it out. I've also heard good things about The Peoples Rom too so you may wanna try that one as well.
I just flashed the people's rom a couple days ago and it has been good so far. Sounds like it's got everything you are wanting.

Everyone loves this feature. Let's get it ported over to AOSP based ROMs! I'm willing to chip in $25 for someone to get this working. What is it worth to you?
Conditions:
The following conditions must be met in order to claim the bounty. This is to ensure that it is fair and open to everyone.
1. Make a post in this thread mentioning that you are currently working on this project. We don't need updates every step of the way, though that would be nice, but just let everyone know that you are participating is all.
2. You solution must be open sourced. Now, you do not need to post how-to videos of your step by step process, but your solution cannot be locked to one certain ROM. It needs to be open enough to allow other ROM devs to integrate it into their ROM. Whether I use CM/AOKP/Carbon/Liquid, I should be able to use your mod on any of the Note 2 AOSP-based ROMs.
3. Post proof before collecting the bounty. If you post in this thread saying you've done it, prove it. Post a working AOSP-based ROM with WiFi calling integrated, or get with a chef to post one. Once that is done, get at least one other ROM dev to integrate your solution into their ROM.
Once all three conditions are met, the bounty will be paid in full, and everyone will know that you were first to do it. If you want credit in each thread using your mod, that's your right to do so. Creating a separate thread for just your WiFi Calling mod would be a good idea once this is over in order to do bug tracking and such as well, but that's up to you.
Anyway, I feel that these three conditions are simple and reasonable. They protect everyone involved. Any comments or promises of donations are very welcome.
There is a thread in the Nexus 4 forum that has a similar bounty currently valued at over $1400. Perhaps that solution can be ported over.
Current Bounty: $245

Everyone already knows about other WiFi/VoIP options. If you don't, do a search. Either way, this thread is NOT the place to discuss that. This is a push to get T-Mobile's WiFi calling working on AOSP ROM, not a suggestion thread for other options.

I'll see your $25 and add my own $25.
<rant>I can understand why the Nexus devices don't have it and honestly after reading and reading and reading don't think it ever will. What I don't understand is why the Note 2 being a Tmobile device can't easily have this ported over. There has so much been said about the Nexus devices not having the "framework" to do it, the Note should be the exact opposite no? I know back on one of my devices, I completely rooted, installed Cyanogen and had a wifi calling apk that added it in. I know there is more to it than this but I'm putting my money where my mouth is so I just wanted to throw my $0.02 in (no pun intended) </rant>
Shouldn't we just post it here but have the Nexus 4 rom as the primary thread to go to? I know they're waiting for the GS4 for it's dump on T-Mobile so they can have a 4,2 build with wifi calling not broken.

I've been following that thread since it's inception. I did happen to come from the nexus 4 so...but anyways let's get developers from this thread and the nexus thread to work together. That would be absolutely brilliant.
I'll probably never run an AOSP on this device, but if it had wifi calling they would be more appealing. ... so put me down for 25.

Put me down for $5. BUT if some1 getting the multi screen working, I'll add additional $100.

WiFi calling is able to be ported to AOSP ROMs due to its nature as an IMS service. The framework is built into the Touchwiz ROMs, but is not dependent on the Touchwiz services. It'll just take a steady hand to make it happen. Nexus devices would be able to have it happen as well.

Any WiFi Calling solution would be device specific. If the Nexus gets it first, then someone still has to port it over the the Note 2 to make it work with our libs.

Multi Windows requires Touchwiz framework services, so it cannot be ported out of Touchwiz ROMs, due to those dependencies.
In for $25 if someone can get WiFi calling on CM.
(I'll try myself if the bounty gets big enough!)

I am confused as to why it has been so hard to port for 4.2 based when we had it for 2.3 that worked fine on aosp. I guess a lot has changed (and complicated) in those frameworks and services since the good ole days

It's a completely different system now. Plenty of threads details the changes, so Google a bit and you'll figure it out. I'm way too tired to list off the reasons why it's way more difficult now.
Put me down for $10 op
Put me down for 5 and I doubt I will even use it. I just like to see folks able to use AOSP without giving up much
Carbon Nightly | Kroz Hue Theme | Crack Flasher
I said I'd put down 20 for the Nexus 4 thread so i'll put the same here. Hold me to it!
Pute down for 10 for sure. Id love to use it on att base and n7105 base romz. The only thing keeping me from n7105 base roms is no wifi calling. Really limits the choices and at my house I really need wifi calling or its a deal breaker.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but porting the Tmo WiFi calling to any other ROM would require source code for the RIL, kernel and modem, won't it?
Even so, put me down for $25. Not holding my breath, tho.
Swyped from the closest Galaxy.

I'm Good for $10... I'd probably throw in another $10 just out of gratitude when we got it.

We cannot recommend a specific ROM because a ROM that works for one person may not for another. Different people like different things in their ROMs. Also we don't want to take away from other developers who have worked very hard to develop their ROM. We can only suggest trying different ROMs until you find one that you like and stick with it.
All I can really tell you is almost of our TW roms are very good and very stable. (Likewise is good, but is a WiP)
Beyond this you'll have to just browse the dev sections as we cannot recommend one over another. (Xda policy).
Just find a rom you think you'd like and read the first page and at least the last 5-7 pages of its thread. This will give you an idea on what to expect for stability.
Good luck!

Hi everybody! My stepson just gave me his old T-999 SG3. I have his older HD2 which I have flashed with the NexusHD2 v4.5 on NativeSD. I've done more reading on XDA getting to know the SG3. I figured how what Knox is, how to root my SG3...y'all know the story. I don't mean to sound stupid but no ifs...ands...or buts, I need T-Mobile's Wi-Fi calling which I understand is not an APK but embedded in the T999s Touchwiz ROMs. I never really knew why there were "Android Original Development" and "Android Development" threads until now...one's stock, the other is not. It's impossible for me given I go to school full-time, work full-time as a substitute teacher and make the time to search every square inch of XDA for what I need to know though I have spent a lot of hours doing just that as I like to think I've made considerable progress getting to know the SG3. Until fairly recently I've been using the HTC Titan PI39100 and custom flashed and I recently sold them; sort of miss those devices today as I'm sitting on the Lumia 1525 to come down the pipe for T-Mobile. Meanwhile, this is really my first "jump in the pool" with Android on both my HD2 and SG3. What I need to know from y'all is what is the best and leanest (debloated) ROM(s) that give me this awesome Android experience so many of you are after and gives me that Wi-Fi calling which is a must? I have Skype if all else fails. But there is mention of having to flash a modem and while I don't mind flashing ROMs and other things which recovery has to do, I need to know if that is the same as the term "radio" when we were referring to the HD2, and what makes this "modem" different than the one I have in by device today which is baseband version T999UVUENC2 Kernel version 3.0.31-1962493 Build JSS15J.T999UVUENC2. I bought Titanium Backup Pro and have frozen a list of apps and other programs which so far have not disrupted my experience on the SG3 based on a couple of lists for the AT&T and T-Mobile variants. And before anybody takes a whack at answering all my questions, is there one "main" thread which can give me the "tour" of what is under the hood on this device and the terminology (lexicon) on its nuances as compared to the HD2? I want to give this Android experience a chance; thank you!

The only debloated stock ROM with working WiFi calling to my knowledge is Dandroid. I'm not recommending it over any other ROM, it just seems to fit the features you're looking for.
Modem/Radio/Baseband, all the same thing. You ate on the latest available build so you will need to stay on that NC2 modem regardless of what you flash.
