Confusion about /0 directory / 4.2.2 - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

I'm considering upgrading to a 4.2.2 ROM. Been doing some reading, particularly about the /0 folders in the SD card.
I saw it suggested that a person NOT switch back down to 4.1.X from 4.2.2. Anyone have OK experience doing that? I want to be able to go back if for some reason I want to.
I'm on 4.1.1 TW based ROM. From what I read, I should have /data/Media folder, but I don't . Either I'm confused, or what I read was wrong, or I mis-interpreted it. Comments?
Thanks for any thoughts.

You can gon ack and forth and be just fine but just make sure you back up your imei and efs folder and you are golden.
The only reason is that you can loose your imei go back BUT its rare. If you.do a full wipe is recommended and not just system and factory reset i.e. /data as well.
A ext sd card is best so you can avoid all of that and a good file explorer like root explorer.

Really appreciate your input. I have been proceeding in the direction you recommend.
I presume that restoring /DATA after moving from 4.1.1 to 4.2.2 is not something I should do. Better to restore apps from Tibu (not system), and data for those apps as required.
I also anticipate making a Nandroid of current system, with hopes of restoring to that if I'm not happy with the new ROM I would experiment with. Maybe doing a full wipe, etc. before restoring that Nandroid would be a good idea too.

Your thinking on all this is correct.

It actually works great, but I only do it if same version of ROM, ie 4.1.1, updated to another or newer 4.1.1.

Preserving everything stock before flashing.

So I am now a very proud owner of a GN and I come from the Vibrant.
I'm used to flashing ROMs kernels etc, but know its different for every phone.
The one thing I didn't do was ever back up my IMEI or anything like that. So before I start flashing on the GN, can anyone help me out with how to back up everything in case I need to go back to stock. Thanks!

I didn't think nandroid did that. I tout there was a separate file that needed to be saved and extracted.

You're correct, nandroid just backs up /system, /data (excl. /sdcar), boot.img and recovery.img. That's it.
I've seen other people back up the following, although I personally can't see a reason to if you don't plan on messing with them (simple rom flashing and wiping will not touch those areas):
the contents of /factory
the efs.img file

Ya I think the efs.img is what I was thinking about. Plus people flashing and wiping their IMEI numbers which I need for ensquared insurance. But flashing back to a stock image would give you back your IMEI or no? "If wiped"

To be honest, I'm not sure what would wipe your IMEI number.
I think it is stored in two places on your device, and neither of them are touched by flashing ROMs. But go ahead and back up what I mentioned above if you want. It certainly won't hurt (root required of course).

How does a nandroid backup/restore work?

Noob question, I should know this by now, but I don't. What exactly gets backed up with a nandroid? I was thinking of trying some JB roms but don't want to reconfigure my working ICS stuff in case something is not working correctly or I don't like it. Will a nandroid restore bring back everything that was on my phone at the time seamlessly? I know some of you flash roms daily and assume that nandroid backups are the way to go, but I want to make sure. Thanks!

On TWRP, it gives you some options, but the usual that is backed up is system, data and boot. Basically your entire current installation. Nandroids will bring back everything back.

how to fully wipe s3 clean

I jus recentlt rooted my phone and flashed recovery mod and then flashed cm10 and it was working fine and still works fine...
the problem is that in recovery I wiped data and cache and dlvick or whatever its called.I followed the instructions to a t and it all worked fine..but when I went into my sd card info and it says I have 11.95gb and only 2.30gb available. ..I have 7.94gb in miscellaneous files...so I tried wiping again in recovery and flashed my original backup rom and everything works fine except for my big gb games like gta3 etc..so its like it wiped it all or moved it over somehow..how can I fix this? please and thanks!

Get disk usage from the market. It will show you the files using all your storage. It's probably your old CWM backups. You can delete your unused backups through CWM.

Best bet would to just plug your phone into your pc and see what is taking up so much space. if is misc data, i could see it being zip files and what not.
Or it could be if you flashed 4.2. 4.2 has this profile thing that is only for tablets but they just disabled the function for mobile phones. look through your directories to see if there is anything under sdcard/0/. if there is, make sure you take all the data you want/need out of the /0 directory and put it back under your sdcard and then just delete the /0 directory. Hope it helps.
Or just use the disk usage app I suggested and you completely ignored. It will list your biggest culprits.

[Q] went from CM10.1 back to stock touch-wiz, now problems!

Hey guys, I recently went from TouchWiz to CM 10.1, and today I went back to TouchWiz. I ended up flashing the latest "root66" TouchWiz ROM because it's the official touchwiz with root injected into it. I did this using ODIN on my PC. (I have all my data backed up elsewhere so I don't mind starting over from scratch like this)
Everything seemed to be fine until I started noticing that a little over 6GB of my internal storage was being taken up by "miscellaneous files". (according to System --> Storage) Turns out it's a bunch of old folders and files from when I was on CM 10.1. I did a factory reset before I loaded root66, so what gives? My questions are:
1. Did I miss a step somewhere? Again, I did a factory reset from within clockworkmod and I assumed that would wipe everything - but clearly it didn't.
2. Looking at the filesystem, I noticed that "/sdcard" appears to by a symlink to "/storage/sdcard0". Is this right? I know Android 4.2 (which is what CM10.1 is) changes around the filesystem and mount-points a bit, and I'm worried that maybe I've got some leftover cruft from briefly being on 4.2.
Thanks for any and all help!!

No problem. Use file explorer and go to /data/media. You can see everything there. There will be a 0, legacy, and obb folder leftover from 4.2.2.

Thanks for the reply, before I noticed your reply however I ended up doing another factory reset, but this type I manually wiped the /System partition using TWRP. Then I flashed root66 again using Odin. Now things look better, no more files hanging over from previous ROM's.
I did just go into /data/media and there's a bunch of folders like: Android, Application, DCIM, Documents, Movies, Music, etc, etc. I don't see the folders you mentioned though. (0, legacy, obb) Does this mean I'm all good now? And if so, is wiping /System generally a good thing to do when swapping ROM's around? Thanks again,
As long as your storage is reading as you'd expect, I'd say you're good to go.
Personally, I never wipe /system. If something goes wrong and your Rom won't flash you'll be left without an os till you either download another or Odin flash stock firmware.
Never had any issues doing it this way. Plus when you flash a Rom it overwrites everything anyway. And some devs code a system format into their updater-script btw.

That's what I thought too, but clearly that didn't happen to me given that I had 6GB of stuff hanging around after flashing root66. (using ODIN) Oh well, unless someone tells me otherwise I think at this point I'm good to go. Thanks,

[Q] Unable to turn on Wifi?

Guys, I have made backup from TWRP and then flashed another ROM. I tested it for a while and decided to return to my backup. I restored and everything went fine. But I am unable to turn on WiFi!!!!! As soon as I press WiFi button, it just pops back, and nothing happens!
Now, I was on MJ5 and both ROMs are 4.4.2 as a matter of fact same version (FNI4)... What could be the problem? I am STILL on MJ5 but the damn thing just won't turn on. Data is working normaly.
I was on Phantom, then flashed Mr. Luong, and returned to Phantom from backup, if that matters....
Thanx!
Change modem, what is the baseband right now? And what was the baseband of Mr.Luong?

It had modem choice in Aroma Vietnam or EU, I of course chose EU. Now baseband is FNI1.
When I flash Mr Luong, Wifi is OK. Go figure.

Modem has nothing to do with Wifi. Reflash Phantom with clean wipe rather than restoring from backup.
Ideally, you should format SD card to be extra sure. I think your wifi should be back with that.

I'll give it a try but that is ridiculous, I thought nandroid backup exists just for this situations - you try new ROM, and if you don't like it restore backup easily
You are right - I flashed JellyKat (I had it on my SD) and Wifi works.... I am really dissapointed, what could go wrong when you backup whole partitions??? I never had these problems with HTC, Samsung really is disaster... just one problem after another...

I had my fair share of problems with Nandroid Backup. The problem is not the device manufacturer, but the app that backsup / restores the OS.
Anyway, I always keep a cache of StockOS +CurrentOS+ EFS + TitaniumBackup at hand. Though a bit lengthy, I find this as the most reliable way to be back on android - exactly the way I had left it.
