Hi,
I currently have a stock rooted E971 on JB and it seems that the earpiece/call quality is quite bad; the person on the other line is always sounds very choppy - the audio seems to cut in and out.
I've attempted to flash a different modem (Rogers ICS) but it didn't resolve anything. The only thing that's worked so far was to flash a different ROM entirely, more specifically, RootBox. While RootBox is quite smooth, I still find it a tad slower than stock.
Any suggestions on how I can improve call quality?
Thanks in advance

Hi guys,
I am running the AOKP (Build 27) and I can't seem to get Voodoo Sound Plus to work. I have been reading forums but I can't seem to find a proper fix without changing Roms. Has anyone found a fix? Or alternatively (although I am happy with AOKP) has anyone found a ROM that works with Voodoo but is as good as AOKP?
Thanks!

Afaik voodoo doesn't work with galaxy nexus.
OK i can confirm it definitely doesn't work with gnex.
Its not a wolfson amp.
Anyway the rom has nothing to do with voodoo, its the kernel.

You need to do some research man. There is no voodoo sound for the gnex on any kernel (it's kernel based btw, not ROM).

Okay thanks. Didn't know that the GNEX doesn't support it. Bummer. Looks like I'll still be using my Galaxy Tablet for music!
Give it a 2nd chance, I find my experience with any other Android phone horrible in terms of music saved for the Galaxy S and this one (S2 close but not as good). The included DAC of GNex is fairly good IMO, despite being not a Wolfson but TI.

You're right, it's not that bad at all. Even without Voodoo Sound I still get quite a good quality. Using Poweramp greatly increases the overall quality IMO (and I use TF10 and Westone 4R earphones with a Fiio E11 amp). I recently just installed the Franco Kernel (although I'm not sure if the Franco, Nightly or the Imoseyon is the best one out of the 3 available via the app). It has a "high performance sound" option but I haven't really tested it yet. Battery life is improved though!
I've recently rooted my phone and gotten the latest cyanogenmod (hercules), ever since then, everytime i make a phone call, i hear everyone else clearly, but apparently they can't hear me properly. They describe the sound as hearing a lot of distortion and a "robot" voice. I'm not sure whats causing this problem, I have great cell reception, and I've never really had this problem with my old OS (ice cream sandwich). I remember my friend telling me they can't hear my voice because it was so soft, so i went through the settings on my phone and turned of noise suppression and it was better, but then after that call no one car hear me talk.
Anyone know any possible solutions to this?
Re: SII X Hercules (4.2, CyanogenMod) Phone call voice distortion Problem
I've got the koodo S2X and I've also had some issues with call quality.
First I had complaints of people I was talking to being able to hear an echo of themselves it was fine for me though.
I also had complaints of it sounding like i was underwater or slightly robotic.
What rom are you currently on? There are two 4.2 kernals that might fix your problem, it fixed the call issue I was having.

Alternatively you could try a different radio, or there is a thread that offers a hardware fix and instructions. Personally I'd make that my last resort though.

I'm currently on CyanogenMod 10.1 - 20130226- Nightly- hercules
Build number is cm_hercules-userdebug 4.2.2 JDQ39
Kernal Version 3.063- cyanogendmod - g5n897f5
Not sure if this answers you're question (I'm kind of new to the whole custom ROM's on Android).

I know everyone says this, but make sure "Noise Suppression" is checked in phone settings. If it isn't, people will complain that you sound quiet or far away, or have a robotic voice like you described.
The hardware fix is for people with call echo (the other person hears it, you don't).
Hope this helps.

Okay so either kernal should work for you, I know I had an issue with both the stock Cm10.1 kernal and Aokp 4.2 stock kernal. With both kernals I was getting pretty good call quality but it still wasn't quite the same as stock ics.
Because there has not been an official release for jellybean on the t989 I dont think you'll find a perfect rom in terms of sound quality. The kernal is closely related to sound clarity with jb, so flashing one of the two kernals should fix your problem for the most part.
What custom recovery are you using, twrp or cwm?
If i flash cm10.1 2/26 nightly, what gapps do i need?

Hey,
I have the same problem with my phone, can you tell me if switching kernel fixed it?
thanks

I'm on cwm. Sorry for late response, haven't had time to try these out.
I loaded this into my 7/10/13 Evervolv Nightly today and gave it a whirl. It works slightly better than the regualar camera that comes with with the ROM. The picutes turn out perfect. The on-screen settings all work. The video is working, but not real usable. The sound turns out perfect, but the video is pretty janky at best. Have any of you figured out a fix for this yet? Is there anything we can do to make this better? I just odexed my ROM and apps, but it didn't really help the camera at all. Outside of that the odexing made everything seem a little faster and smoother. It was already quick, so I can't be sure my eyes are not decieving me. Anybody got anything to add to this?

Although it won't give you video the one camera I've found that works well on ICS and JB roms is Camera360. Just make sure you turn off the effects tab in settings so you get regular pictures. I went through many different camera apps till I found this one. The only time I ever had a issue was kernel related....changed the kernel and it worked great.
Let me know how that works for you.
(I thought I'd report the following issue, in case someone else had experienced it or if someone understands why)
On non-stock ROMs, the sound from ANY application (phone, music player, etc...) comes out heavily distorted through the audio jack but NOT through the phone's speaker. This has been verified on CM10.1.3 STABLE and various 4.3 ROMS.
I used to not have this problem and I've been running CM10.1 based ROMs and more recently various 4.3 ROMS without this problem for many months. Recently the problem started so I tried completely wiping, reformating of SD card, and re-installations of ROMs to no avail. Took it to a technician who replaced the whole jack-unit but it didn't help. So...I ODINed back to stock 4.1 and problem was fixed! However, any time I install a non-stock ROM, the problem returns, and only re-ODINing back to a stock ROM fixes it. I've tried 4 or so times....
I've been able to flash Custom 4.3 STOCK-BASED ROMS (based on leaks) without any issue as well, so it's not an issue with flasing "custom ROMs" perse, or with Android 4.3...(thank God! at least I can flash Touchwiz 4.3!)
Does anyone have a clue what's going on here?
Do the roms have a volume or sound enhancement mod do you think? If you flash an older one that used to work fine, does it also exhibit the same problem? If not, maybe try using the audio files from the old Rom in the new one? Probably won't help, but you never know...

As far as I know, there were no audio/volume enhancements in the ROMs I tried (CM 10.1.3 and Carbon ROM) only the usual DSP audio app (which I made sure wasn't running). Yeah, those exact ROMs totally worked in the past without a problem, and it wasn't just my sound files that sounded distorted out of the jack it was any sound from any app (system sounds, phone, etc...)
I might try again with a non-stock ROM if/when Android 4.4 becomes stable, otherwise for the time being I'm happy to stick with TW 4.3 (thanks to you!) It's really awesome!

Can't argue with you there! On a new build now and will get it released when I get my computer back from my daughter! So watch out for that in just a bit!
And in case you didnt see it, there is a 4.4 Rom posted. Looks like it was just updated with more functionality too. You should take a look if you haven't yet.

I tried the 4.4 and unfortunately I the same audio distortion problem returned right away. This was coming from being on the TW 4.3 Leak (#2) from over a week straight with the problem. I researched how to lower the audio jack levels in Cyanogen ROMs and found out about this file: "snd_soc_msm_2x" in the system folder
I messed with that file a bit (with a text editor) and managed to get the distortion to go away by lowering ALL of the headphone outputs by 20%. Problem is that then the volume was really too low to enjoy music on. I tried only 10% lower but then the distortion came back. After that I gave up, but convinced that there's something in the deep CM audio settings which my phone no longer likes, Weird.
BTW, I was able to Nandroid back to my TW 4.3 and the problem disappeared. So at least, there's no need to ODIN if I ever want to try again.
there is information about hacking that file here on xda. i think i saw it in an s4 forum but they got their info from the s3. if i remember or find it again ill let you know. but a quick search might find it as well.

I played around with cm11 but I decided I'm not ready for it yet, so I'm back on sense 5.5 KK 4.4 ARHD. Even though I liked the cm11 very much what I really miss about it is the snappy vanilla sounds it has for unlock/lock/touch..
If anyone could upload them into a flashable/nonflashable zip it would be amazing.
Edit:: I did manage to extract the ogg files from the cm11 ROM.. I guess it is no longer needed for me but others might want it.
Edit2:: appearntly , changing the 'tick' or 'touch' sounds in system data cripples the speakers, basically does a weird sharp static sound every time you 'tick' or 'touch' anything even on silent which got me worried, but switching back to stock 'tick' sound fixes the issue.. Anyone has an explanation to why this is behaving like this?
