Re-root after OTA JB? - HTC One X

Hi guys I had unlocked my bootloader and installed CWM and done a backup. I then put the stock recovery back on and OTA updated to Jelly Bean. Currently on 4.1.1. I no longer seem to have root. Do I just need to install SU from CWM again (I put CWM back on and backup up).
Cheers.

If you have updated with htc ota is normal that you aren't root.
So, you need to reflash su or flash a custom recovery!

Yep reflashing supersu worked!

How to get OTA on rooted phone without wiping all data

Sorry if this questions is noobish,
But I rooted my Sprint GS3 w/ CWM and want to know if theres a way to flash the OTA's without it wiping all my data? I had the original Evo before and everytime I flashed an update it erased all my apps and data, but that was also using custom roms. I'm content with the GS3 stock rom, just don't want to lose all my data.

DL Voodoo OTA rootkeeper from the Market
What I did was use Voodoo OTA rootkeeper to temperarily unroot the phone. Then I reflashed the stock recovery. (look here for the stock recovery file to odin to your phone) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1743923&highlight=stock+recovery
Once I did that the OTA download would install.
Then you can rerun Voodoo to reroot your phone. You can also reinstall CWM if needed. I haven't bothered yet so I am running root with stock recovery.

I'm gonna try that. But Superuser has a temp unroot option and survive OTA option....that should work right? Or is Voodoo better?

THANKS, your advice to reflash stock recovery seems to have worked. after i reflashed stock recovery, i had to manually flash the LG2 to LG8 update file since i had already tried to accept it as an OTA last nite and failed bc of CWM. i didnt use Voodoo, Superuser's temp unroot and survive OTA options seem to have worked, except now SU doesnt allow me to toggle those 2 options on/off anymore. But SU still allows me to toggle SU permissions for apps on/off

i dont see why you wouldnt still get ota updates. i could be wrong, but pretty sure youll still get them
for flashing to stock, rooting, and unlocking you can use the nexus root toolkit.
http://www.wugfresh.com/nrt/
it will automatically download the stock image file which contains the stock recovery. i think its boot.img (within the stock file). you can also manually download the stock file here: https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
edit: heres a good thread that you missed

im not 100% sure because this is my first nexus device. but on my n7000 (international galaxy note) i got updates just fine with a custom recovery.
use the tool kit in my first post to flash stock recovery.
I got an OTA update on my deb/LTE with TWRP and SuperSU on it.
After the update stock recovery was flashed and my deb was unrooted again.
Just flashed TWRP back and the SuperSU zip. Everything is working fine!:good:
@shyd

Sure, otherwise I couldn't alter the recovery!
The bootloader lock/unlock state hasn't been changed by the OTA update!
Excellent, thanks all.

Also, if you want the OTA but don't want to have to unlock and root again, people usually post a flashable update that you can install via your custom recovery.

No. OTA updates require stock recovery. However, you can revert to stock recovery and unroot as you please. Also, you can flash OTA updates through TWRP once a flashable zip is made, except you have to download it and flash it manually, just like installing a custom ROM. Cheers.

I received the last update through OTA on a rooted Stock ROM with TWRP installed.
After the install was finished TWRP asked if I wanted to restore the root. All went smoothly.
To clarify.. I did not flash the ROM. I used the normal OTA update.

I believe you can on small point updates. The full update from 4.3 to 4.4 most likely won't work with a custom recovery.

you must have stock /system folder + stock recovery
you can be rooted, by if you delete some files in /system - you break your ota
new ota will be with new radio too
after ota super-su apk will be removed by the ota
---------------
i restored /system apps from sdcard before 4.3 ota and migrate very well from 4.2.2
The ota 4.3 update removed my root and Twrp. Hope 4.4 doesn't do the same. It's always a pain for me to restore root with my Windows 7 laptop. It keeps installing the wrong usb drivers which get in the way of the wugfresh toolkit access to the nexus 7. So it's no easy task for me.

[Q] 4.3 + S-Off ---Can I root?

Hi,
My phone somehow managed to update itself to 4.3 even though I've been denying it for several weeks in attempts to get around to using Rumrunner. But now I'm stuck on 4.3 without root, and that caused a couple things to break from when I previously had root (some items are perma-frozen and I cannot "unroot" to access GOOD).
Is there any way to fix this currently since I am S-Off? Like can I go back to 4.2.2 since I'm S-Off?
Fastboot flash twrp or cwm, unless its already installed and accessable. Then flash the superuser zip thru recovery. That will give you root back.

I'll give that a shot, thank you!
Works great thanks. I see 4.4 is now trying to be pushed. Can I repeat this process if I try to take the OTA or will it fail because of CWM?
It will fail unless you are complete stock. You can and should remain s-off. To take the ota, you would have to ruu and then take the ota(s). Once updated, you just fastboot flash recovery and then flash su thru recovery. Then you will have stock rooted KK.

OK thanks, that makes sense to me. I guess I'll just wait for a stock rooted ROM or something, as that seems like it'll be less hassle. Much thanks.

[Q]How to update from 2.22.401.4 to 2.22.401.5 with stock rooted M8?

I'm on stock rooted Sense --401.4 and I want to update to --401.5 version. I have s-off, and custom recovery, and am rooted.
Although I have a constant "system update" notification on my notification bar, I really cannot update because of the custom recovery. Is there any fully stock version of the latest ROM available which I can flash to update? Mike1986 hasn't provided it yet. Is there any other way to update easily? I really don't want to switch to custom ROMs for the update, and I really don't want to factory reset my phone right now.
Is there any way we can flash OTA update .zips? If yes, I really cannot find them on XDA, so can anyone guide me to them (and a guide on how to flash them?). Thank you.
You can flash stock recovery.img and then perform Update. İ tried and it is working. But you lose root. After Update Flash Custom recovery and supersu zip.
