I reflashed my Kindle recently, in order to upgrade from a rooted 6.3.1 rom to a 6.3.2 amazon based rom.
The strangest thing has now happened. My serial number changed, and I can no longer register the device with Amazon. The serial number is now 15 digits long, instead of 16 digits, and the first 4 digits are no longer D01E (standard kindle fire), and are instead 5001.
Any thoughts? How could this get corrupted?
Thanks
You mean when you type:
---
su
idme ?
---
In terminal? Strange...

Yup. Serial number is corrupt there too.
I'm reluctant to post the incorrect and correct serial number, but there is a digit missing, and the first 4 digits of the serial number are incorrect.
Really weird, eh? I do notice that it says nvram info. I know there is a huge interest in not changing this number, but I'd love to put back my original (correct) serial number. . . .
Frustrating.

Got it sorted. Didn't realize you can set NVRAM values with idme. Really strange that it got messed up in the first place.
Anyways, thanks, asking me to check it in idme pointed me in the right direction!

I just spent 2 hours trying to root my cousins wildfire, i tried unrevoked 3.21 and 3.32 and neither was able to root my desire. I then tried alpharevx which said found a wildfire and asked me for the beta key which i very carefully entered:Xqks1OECBc9WBRAu and that told me invalid beta key! Now as the phone was detected by both programs I am baffled as to why it wasn't working. The phone is on orange UK but not simlocked, it also appears to be unbranded..can anyone suggest what keeps going wrong?
did you try replacing letter"O" with "0". Also instead of capital I, try lower case L.
Or better yet, just copy and paste the code.
Good luck.

Yes, tried substituting numbers for letters etc but copy and paste doesn't work.

Sorry for the stupid question but how did you get that beta key?
Did you get it from alpharev site by entering your wildfire's serial number? This is what you should have done.
if your answer is yes, then maybe you can paste that code in word and change the font so that you can distinguish different characters.

Do this and I assure u will get rid of key errors. Hope u r on windows7 pc platform.
First connect the wildfire to pc with usb debugging enabled. Then open command prompt and CD into adb folder (assuming u have adb ). Then type the command "adb devices". Now it shows ur serial number in command prompt. Right click inside command prompt and make "select all". Then press CTRL + C . Now create a text file somewhere and right click inside that and paste. Now u will have serial number in text file.
Then copy the serial number and paste in the alpharevx website to get beta key. Now again don't write the beta key. Just select the beta key on website and right click to copy.
Then open the alpharevx program from command prompt. When it asks for beta key, right click inside command prompt and paste. That's all I can say for getting rid of key errors.
GOOD LUCK.

*#06# on the phone's keypad give me imei number, entered that in the serial number of the form on alpharevx site where I selected 1.01.001 hboot win7 for os and wildfire phone, generated serial but the alpharevx.exe doesn't allow for copy and pasting the beta key. Now does the serial number it's asking for mean imei or something else?

The IMEI number is not your serial number. Its a 12 digit number below the battery, or, it is also shown on the AlphaRev X Program itself. Normally begins with HT0.
To copy paste, copy the serial from the Website. Then, Right click the Title Bar of the AlphaRev X Program, Click Properties, then, in the Sub window that appears, Click "Quick Edit Mode".
Then, simply right click anywhere inside the program, and the key will be pasted.

When you run the program it will tell you the serial number. Then you copy.paste that to the website.
This is a general section post. *shakes fist at you*

It is also under your phone's battery. It is the serial number to your phone. There is some type of checksum in there or something, so make sure you type it right.
While we're at it...
its also under settings/about phone/phone identity
Does anyone know or have any idea where the Kindle Serial Number is located in the device? (not through the menu but stored within the device), the reason I ask is because I am testing eldarerathis' FFF extended bootloader and I was tinkering with flashing Stock ROM (rooted) to the alternate partitions, funny thing is that for some reason the OS is unable to retrieve the Serial Number and so you can't register the device with Amazon. I've looking through every file within the ROM and I have not been able to identify anything that could possibly give me a hint of where the Serial Number is located.
Any thoughts, ideas, suggestions are greatly appreciated.

If it was sitting in some file, it would be much too easy to spoof and lead to sharing Prime accounts, etc. It would have to be embedded in the hardware somewhere. That's my way of telling you that I have no idea why that setup would have a hard time retrieving the serial number.

Why are things like this in the Dev section? This needs to be moved to Q&A
The only reason is I feel there is a better chance of getting a response for this type of question from active devs than most regular users. If not agreed by a moderator I'll gladly move this to the Q&A.
I recently bought a Kindle Fire from Ebay and I'm unable to register it on Amazon.
The amazon reps told me that the serial number is blacklisted and recomanded me to return the device to sender and ask for refund.
Well, I'm unable to do that and I don't want to install a custom rom on it.
The serial should be located within the software, and there should be a way to change it (like adding IMEI - see the guide in the dev section).
will it work with fastboot ? does this change the serial number or jst the number that 'adb devices' will display ?
fastboot -s <serial number> specify device serial number
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
you say you dont want to install a custom rom but its really the best and easyiest way around it... I recommend this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1439916

It wouldn't do you any good to change the serial number. There's a corresponding security key number paired with it, so changing one won't help without the other. Since Modaco is just an enhanced version of the stock software, it wouldn't be any different either in terms of obtaining Amazon services on the device (sorry pooch).
Contact ebay/paypal and file a dispute.
My P8000 (white - no led) has serial number 0123456789ABCDEF which suggests its not device specific - has anyone else got this or similar?
Hey, what a coincidence! I have exactly the same serial!
Same here,whats going on.
Mediatek doesn't care about that number so everyone has the same...
Yep, same

set arbitary serial number
I cant install Navigon (which I bought some 6 years ago).
I did some google research and suspect this is due to the funny serial number. So: How to change it?
Rooting the phone was no problem, just downloaded su in Google-play.
So I can set an arbitrary serial number using adb:
adb shell 'echo "XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX" > /sys/class/android_usb/android0/iSerial'
Has anybody tried this?
The serial number I read in the settings does not seem to change.
Opinions?
Did you tried to replace with engineering mode?

Saw an LG G7 with the serial number blank/unpopulated. What does that mean and can it be restored? IMEI and everything else looks normal.

All of that is nvram data, it is all stored in the efs partition.
Serial number is not really important as its there for verifying when needed. IMEI is needed to connect to a network.
You can always use a app like cdma workshop to fill the serial number back in if its still on the case.
Thanks for the tip. Any other option for reflashing serial number? Can't seem to find a current version of CDMA Workshop and not sure if that would work with G7.
In order not to create a new topic, I will write here. I have the same problem, the erased serial number.
Is there a real working way that will restore the serial number? Thank.
