Hey guys,
I have searched for hours and can't find anything on this topic. I was having problems with a rooted version of stock 4.2.1 on my Sprint GNex, so I decided to do a factory reset and flash the new Black Bean ROM. Everything is good, except I should have about 16gb free, and I now only have 8gb free. I am not sure how to diagnose this.
I had done a nandroid backup prior to the wipe, but it seems to have been deleted from the partition. I can not figure for the life of me where to delete these files that would be taking up 8 extra GB. I had copied over all of my pictures, but the total size of that was `4gb.
Does anyone have any suggestions for me?

why not? It's a 32gb phone, It should have roughly 28gb free coming from the factory
My question is how do i remove the stuff that's taking up so much space, it seems that when I reloaded all my apps after the wipe, it is doubling up.
Before I wiped and flashed, i had 16-18 of 32 (really 28) GB free, now I have HALF of that
search for what is taking your memory.
relock and unlock bootloader (it will wipe everything)

Hi, So I got a new HTC One x yesterday (32 GB.
When I go to the storage menu, I can see that 4.98 GB out of 6.76 GB of the total App storage has been used.
For the used space it says:
Apps 289 MB
Other 4.70 GB
Available 1.78 GB
My question is, what is under the space for Other (4.70 GB!). It seems a lot and I can not find a way to check whats there.
The phone storage is fine with 1,25 GB used from 25,24 GB.
Thank you.
The ROM takes some space I think.
Wow, I did not realize that the ROM is that large - almost 5 GB. :crying: Thanks.

Yeah that's shocking never noticed that till now, I though the rom would only be around 1gb.

Ok, so I guess this 8 GB is not so much and soon I will have to start installing apps to the 32 GB phone memory.
I guess the full rOM data shoudl stay there, at least until I root the phone?
Even with a custom ROM installed it comes up with "misc" taking up 3.88gb, when the rom was only ~ 180mb. Strange!
Thats even more strange! Perhaps its just a hoax to hide the fact that there is actually less memory in the phone . Well that's a joke ... probably, hopefully ....
I am sure there must be folks around here, who can and would be interested to get to the bottom of this and also find out if it is possible and reasonable to somehow free more space from under the "mysteriously" occupied "misc" line.
I tried to access the data directories in the phone own memory using simple browsing tools (ES File explorer) but with the factory ROM and without root, I could not make much sense of this.
Is there anybody, who has further input to this? Thanks in advance.
Same problem
I have the same issue. Just did a full wipe then installed latest ViperX rom and get the same result: 4.73GB of 'Other' storage, and cant work out what its used for
Is this normal?
Finally find this section...
Recently got an HOX (very cheap,) so decided to gave the HTC another chance. Had before issues with One S and few other devices.
Back to topic. Installed all my favorite apps and then, browsing phone came to Storage and saw this "Other" with 4.69GB taken out from Total.
First I thought some of my stuff, but realised that phone is brand new and nothing else installed except apps.
Also when turned it on , it was on 4.0.3 and within 24 hours got several updates (vary btwn 8MB to 369MB) until it stopped on 4.1.1 (JB-WOW).
I haven't look at Other when first booted up, so can't say it was same size or not.
Now I see you guys have same "issue" so I am ok for now...
But if this space is for OS, I hope the Android 5.x will fit in to reserved 6.61GB ?
Oh, and one more thing; the Storage is 26.58GB (phone is clean yet as nothing installed).
Every form I have read on this issue, people have said they have at most 7gb used up by "other" mine on my HTC one is 23.3GB but I can't where that is I have the VIPERONE rom. Any help is welcome

So I have a quick question that is making little sense. I have recently upgraded to 4.2.2 and tried to do a nandroid back and kept getting an error. Well after some searching it is showing I have 1.36gb of avaliable space. Have checked all media, and etc, apps are only using 1.6gb. Where did all of the other space go? I cleared cache just in case but still nothing. I was thinking this could be a partition problem. But its just really weird. I am going to take a screen shot and upload it. I have searched through this site and google and found nothing related to this issue. Thank you in advance for any advice on how to fix.

Try using DiskUsage. It gives a much clearer and more accurate representation of your storage usage.
Just tried app, it is show 6.6gb for System Data, which is now even more confusing. Roms are ususally 1.5gb at most.

Probably but I'd start from scratch. Restore back to out of the box state (I'd use mskip's Note 8 tool). Then re-root and go from there.
But that's just me.

I would wonder what that 6gb is used up by. So what is the normal size any way?
I would think my system size should be semi normal since I have done nothing to this note yet.

Has anybody notice that the internal storage is not 16G. I have only 10G available even after doing a complete wipe and format. Plus when installing a small ROM like PacROM there is still only 10 or maybe 9.75G, not the 16G as advertised.:crying:

In answer, once a rom gets installed, a certain amount of space is allocated to cache, dalvak, etc. It's common to lose several GB of internal memory. Also remember, there are probably some folders on internal memory also taking space. So this can be normal depending on device. One thing you can try, is to do a wipe on all internal memory, then install the rom.
Also, questions belong in Q & A Forum (I moved it). General is for tips, tricks, general information.
Cheers

Any thoughts on how to get memory back?
I was on civs ROM but I am going to try cm for a while

And I only have 1.59 GB available out of the 9.87 GB that I have all up??
Will trim in 4.3 help for this?

Hey Mate, looking at your display, I would say for starters CM is reporting your storage wrong. I mean look at the chart. 1.5gb for data, which is ok. But look at the grey area in comparison.(only 1.9 free???) I would flash a factory type (rooted or custom) and see if it reports differently. If it does, then CM isn't calculating it correctly.
To be honest, I don't mess with the new CM builds anymore. Way too strange in some aspects, at least for my 2 devices (tablets)

Thanks for the reply
it was reporting the same in civz 3.6 which is why I tried CM
I thought trim in 4.3 might help (I don't know if this is the memory type that trim helps recover?)
When you say flash a stock type ROM
Do you think flashing it with Odin instead of CWM would be worth trying?
Cheers
EDIT - fixed what i did was restore the first backup i made the day i rooted
it was stock 4.1
when i looked in storage under settings there was a miscellaneous files of 5gb that was not showing with either 4.2.2 or cm 4.3
it was a cwm backup that was not being read by the file manager
i deleted all of the files then flashed cm and now i have 8.42 gb
thanks MD

When I do a fresh install I do wipe everything, Dev,Internal SD. I do it twice just to be sure. This is pretty odd. When I did these steps with my Galaxy Tab Plus I would get a full internal HD space. This just makes me wonder if there was really 16Gb for internal storage.

No problem. I'm not real familiar with Sammy devices, although I am about to get an SGS III in a week or so. Funny it couldn't read the backup files though. Must be a peculiar thing with your version of CWM or TWRP. Seems they all store backups in different named files.
Glad you got it fixed though.
As for my experience, every time I ran a recent CM build (a501 and a701), it created directories and multiple sub directories called "0", and replicated back-ups and such. Ate my internal memory to a point where I just did a complete format on my internal and went back to a stock based rom. My own cooked rom's

this may seem like a uesless question but it's bugged me ever since I got my LGOG.
Does the stock LG UI (4.1.2) really eat up 5-7GB of space!?
The OG comes with 32GB of storage (although I know that it's not exactly 32GB since there's a lot of conversion stuff going on) and there's only 25GB of available storage space? I know a friend who has a 16GB Nexus 4 running stock 4.4.2 KitKat and the stock KitKat only eats up around 3-4GB of storage. Is LG's UI really that much of a storage hog?
Another thing, does the 4.4.2 update consume the same amount of space? or does it consume more? And what ROM eats the LEAST amount of storage?
Sidenote: I hope somebody can make a bare-bones 4.4.2 ROM that will eat up the least amount of space

After flashing the kitkat I still got the 25 GB storage. My thoughts 25 GB storage is on the Data partition (user available for documents and files etc) rest of the space is in the system partition and in combine it called 32 GB. That is not the expert opinion just my thought I could be wrong
Internal storage is 32GB....which includes all the partitions like, data, system, boot, bootloader, modem, efs, etc...

I recall reading somewhere here on the LGOG xda forum that somebody was able to get 28.5gb storage by installing a custom rom. I'll try to look for that post.
anyway, can somebody shed insight as to what eats up the 5gb? Titanium Backup says my System ROM is 2.11gb (hooray! just gotta wait for stripped down KK ROM!) and suprisingly.. Also shows 26.8gb of free space while settings>storage and clean master show only 25.04gb. Already now I'm really confused.
If what Titanium backup says is true, what's eating up the remaining 3gb? and if clean master is correct, what's eating the 5gb?

so the 3-5gb is gobbled up by that? I hope there's a ROM coming up that is as close to vanilla as possible.
Hi There.
I've had my phone for quite some time now and I love it. The problem is, is the internal memory. I have the 16GB model which is fine because I also use a 32GB Sandisk micro SD card. I have a custom ROM installed.
CARBON-JB-NIGHTLY-20131117-1645
The Carbon Nightly ROM - Build Date - Sunday November 17th 2013.
It's a couple months out of date now and I'm thinking about upgrading it to the newest build or possibly even switch ROMs to something that is better if you can suggest anything. The main issue I have is that I don't know if I should upgrade my ROM because of the internal storage space.
Total storage Space: 10.46GB
With everything else on my phone (Nothing apart from apps, everything else belongs on the SD card) I still only have 2GB space left which doesn't leave me a lot of room for upgrading or even taking pictures. For some reason, my camera won't let me change my storage device so it forces it to save it to the internal memory which I constantly have to keep moving it to my SD card to stop it from being full. I don't really have much space for installing new apps either so at the moment, everything is wrong with this phone and It's starting to frustrate me a little.
I believe that the missing 6GB (just under of course) is missing because of previous ROM installations that I don't use anymore? I've factory reset it, cleared cache and everything else for that matter. It's just what it is saying is what i'm getting unfortunately.
I want to upgrade to something better or just the newer build of this ROM but at the moment, this version really annoys me. The simple fact of not being able to save pictures I take on my camera directly to my SD card frustrates me beyond belief. If someone could help me out, suggest a new ROM, tell me how I can upgrade my ROM and get lots more of my internal memory back, or if you're able to skype me through the process, you'd be taking a ton of weight off my chest as I'm still stuck with this working brick (as I like to call it) for the next 6-7 months before my contract renews.
Many Thanks!

Yeah It was. I'm actually installing cyanogenmod 11. I'm just nervous about what I do since I'm just going to take a wild shot at it :/.. I'm just going to clear the dalvik cache and cache, then factory reset it then install the new cyanogenmod with the new gapps, then clear the cache again. Turn back on and restore my apps from titanium backup.
Hope that's what is right...
First time In six months I've come close to getting results!
Looking at backups, I backed up my ROM couple months ago but for some reason It backed up to device and not SD card, or simply could've just been me being on the dumb side that day! either way. 8GB/10GB on internal Storage !
