Hi,
i tried to flash a custom ROM and i found a tutorial which said to use "super wipe android revolution" so i put it in the sdcard like the .zip from the custom ROM.
I launched "choose zip from sdcard" and selected super wipe.zip, but after rebooting on recovery when i tried to apply the next file with "choose .zip from sdcard" it said to me that "no files found"!
When i reboot normally, there is the samsung LOGO but nothing else after 5-10 minutes....
Omg that script is erase all the data so why should i do this before flashing a new rom i can't understand why i can't do anything know execpt going on recovyer/ DL mode.
Can you please help me to find a solution like putting maybe the custom ROM on external SD card ?? is it possible or ?
Thanks a lot i'm very afraid of being in this situation...

Wow, that was quite dangerous to flash a zip that you didn't fully understand. It's actually amazing you don't have a full hard brick on your hands. First rule of flashing is to read everything at least twice and if you have any questions on it, read more and ask questions until you understand it. Then you can think about flashing it. Ok, I'll get off my soapbox (to open up room for the many other people who'll say something similar).
Anyways, back to the issue at hand. If you can get into Recovery, It doesn't sound like you're bricked... it just sounds like everything was wiped. If you have a MicroSD card, you can use an adapter and copy a Rom over to your card, then install it through your custom recovery.
If you do not have an external sd card, you could also use the recovery to do a USB mount to your computer (will look like a flash drive on your computer). There should be an option for that in the recovery (TWRP 2.5.0 has it, not sure if CWM has it).
Lastly, if you can't mount the device as usb storage through the recovery, you can always push it across through adb. Search google on how to do it.
Also, before you flash any Rom, make sure you are not flashing an international rom, as that will brick your device. No coming back from that.

Yeah as topherk said, thats extremely dangerous and you should consider yourself lucky that your phone boots up at all.
Best thing to do right now would be to ODIN back to stock and start fresh, but this time make sure you are in the Sprint sections and you understand what you are flashing before you flash it.
Yea man, you are lucky! Your situation is very good, considering.
I have been flashing ROMs since the originial Droid came out. Still, with each new phone I get and root and ROM, I am as nervous as a whore in church! One wrong move, and you can make your expensive phone into a brick. I learned the hard way, then I had to learn how to use TFTP again. Ugly! lol.
When the previous poster said something like, read all you can, then read it again, he was not joking around. Your best bet imo is to get Freezy's stock rooted ROM, and install that. I am certain that will fix all your problems. Go with the MB1 first. Then, do as you please, but certainly stick to ROMs in the Sprint subforum. The one you attempted to flash appears to be for a HTC phone.
Seriously, having some reading comprehension skills is an absolute must if you're going to mess around with your phone. Well unless you have money to keep tossing at sprint every other day cuz you keep going off half cocked and brick your phone. If what you tried to flash really was for an HTC device all I have to say is: WTF gave you any idea that would work out in any sort of ok manner? And did you even attempt to read anything about what you were fixing to do? Or did you just go "oooh shiny and pretty, I think I'll just go try to install it and see what happens. I know it'll work they're all android so they're all the same thing"

Now, now, I try not to insult too much. I think it's best to point out their mistakes in a calm manner (which, admittedly, is hard to do on the 16th thread like this). This person said they were following a tutorial (not here on the Sprint GS3 XDA forums, I've searched for it), so maybe the tutorial was just really bad. I'm not trying to exonerate the op of their responsibility, but I'd like to keep this place as civil as possible. Hopefully they learned their lesson and will only flash street really making sure it's for their phone. That's my hope.

I've answered this same or similar question 9 times today alone across several different devices, and that's not counting the other 7 or 8 I skipped over because I was too irritated to even type. I honestly think most of these people think that because it's android it's all the same and they can just go flashing whatever they want all willy nilly with no repercussions. It's beginning to get ridiculous, actually it is ridiculous. It's like they can't be bothered to read anything first except just enough to brick their phone and then run to look for a miracle. You know that noob video giantjay posted in general, that's how I feel about now.

I will not preach.... But at least skim multiple threads atleast to see what issues people are running into. Get an idea of what u are up against. Secondly LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION. Know where your tuts come from. There are people out there in cyber land that just don't know or give a cra* . I don't really understand the term 'Flash'. What is it and how do I perform flash on my Evo? There is an explanation for Apple phones but since this is a different phone I figured, the process wasn't really the same.
I have already downloaded Netarchy's rooted rom but I do not know really how to flash/install it on to my sd card or is it the phone that it gets installed to?
Any help would be totally appreciated
ahhhh man... You're about to get mobbed to death for not doing any research by some folks on here...
its all good though...
anyways.
When you flash something to your phone all you are doing is basically "unzipping" a file onto it. Much like you unzip files onto your computer using winrar or whatever.
In order to flash a rom to your phone you first have to gain full root. If you haven't done this yet you can do so by going to the development section of this forum and searching for simple root. this will give you full root access and the ability to "flash" roms, themes, etc.
Once you have rooted your phone, NOW you can finally flash a rom.
Flashing is super easy.
Put the file of the rom you want on the root of your sd card (not in any folders or anything)
Then power off your phone.
Power it back on by holding the power and VOLUME DOWN button at the same time. This will bring up a recovery screen. On this screen go to "install zip from sd card" AKA "Flash"
Once you go there, look for the rom you just installed on your sd card and press it. It will start FLASHING it to your phone. then you just reboot and your all sit..
P.S You seem to be really new to this, so before you do anything research What rooting your phone is. How to do it. ETC. Just get your feet wet a bit before you dive in.
Flashing roms and themes and all that junk is really easy once you get the hang of it.
If you need any help P.M me.

There are plenty of people around here that like to help, but asking to have the entire android guide spelled out for ya is a bit much. Go search and read up on what you can understand, then read a little further. When it starts to get confusing again, come back and ask a specific question or two. You will get a lot more help that way.
That s why I m asking! I did look it up, and it s confusing

You gotta look up the tutorials. Flashing means moving something to your SD card and installing it.
unrevoked is kinda advanced since ur brand new..search on youtube for how to root evo 4g
swyped htc supersonic
stay stock
Google the basics . Most people don't have time to explain everything to you. There is a lot to learn, and I would advise you to not mod your phone unless its something you like to do. Your home work too google.
What is : nand recovery, back up, restore
What is: flashing
What is: recovery
What is: sd card, what is stored on it
What is a : rom
What is a :kernel
How do I flash them?
Learn what a ".apk" file is
What two recoveries do you have to choose from?
What is root? And its history (where it came from)
What is "su command"
What is "s" off and "s" on
Like I said, if you don't like too do this stuff and aren't a geek like the rest of us then I wouldn't bother, it takes a lot of reading and learning, one thing we all have in common is we are all still learning.

Honestly, I would love to help, but you are asking too much. It takes weeks, months, even years to get fully acquainted with android and hacking it, especially if this is your first smartphone. If I were you, I would enjoy being stock for now. Once you figure out how to use either terminal or command prompt (Mac or pc, in that order) then maybe start making gradual changes. If you need ANY actual help, pm me as you would not be the first noob i helped. I consider it my duty (ha). Take developments from the experts, give info to the noobs. Really, get familiar with everything, look up some stuff, watch some videos, and if you still need any help, shoot me or another one of the experienced and helpful devs at the xda a pm (private message. Click their name and it will give you the option.) and you will be helped, I garuntee it.

Not picking on ya but you need to understand the basics on yor own because its likely your phone will get messed up if you dont, and you are the only one to blame if it does. Thays why its important to fully understand what you are doing, remember flashing anything to your phone WILL void the warrantee if you screw up so be carefull.

This is if the OP does NOT have Android v2.2.
OP - If you go this route you will need to downgrade in Regaw's 2.2 ROOT METHOD, but stop before using unRevoked.
I am in an overly good mood today so i will help out with some basic information
What is : nand recovery, back up, restore - A nand back up is basically a way to back up your phone its rom and settings. a nand restore uses the a nand back up you made to put your phone back to where is was when you made the nand back up (think about a restore point on a windows computer very similar concept).
What is: flashing - Flashing is the process used to install system files. this is usually done through a recovery which i will get into below. the reason it is called flashing and not installing is because it needs to be done through recovery and is a slightly different process but in more basic terms it is basically installing your rom or radio or other system critical pieces onto the phones internal memory.
What is: recovery - a recovery is basically a program that lets you access some advanced system features, these include nand back up and restore, wiping cache, data, and dalvik, and the ability to flash (install) certain files to your phone. to get into a recovery with your phone off hold volume down and the power button you will load to a white screen with several options (this is the hboot or bootloader) select recovery.
What is: sd card, what is stored on it - Out of the gate your sd card is set up as it should be. their are a few reason you might change this however with 2.2 it has become less of a need and i recommend just leaving it be. The main reason people configure there sdcards is to allow a script called apps2sd to work. what this does is it allows you to store all your apps on the sd card they are normally stored on the phones internal memory. Froyo or 2.2 (the android os version on your phone) has the ability to allow apps to move to your sd card through the settings. now this doesn't work for all apps as it has to be turned on by the app creator but many it will. Because of this i would leave your sdcard alone while you learn the ropes.
What is a : rom - a rom is basically the operating system of your phone. what a rom does is replace the default os with a custom one that has been tweaked or built by a developer. this is the piece of the phone you interact with.
What is a :kernel a kernel is basically the software that translates what you do in the rom to the hardware. think of it as the phones steering wheel. you let the phone to do this and the kernel interprets it so the hardware knows what to do,
How do I flash them? To flash files is relatively easy you place them on the root of your sd card (basically drag and rop onto the sd card but not in any folder). then you boot into the recovery. in the recovery you shoudl be able to find the options to wipe cache, wipe data/factory and wipe dalvik. you select each of these and then yuo select flash .zip from sd. next you scroll to the file you want to flash (the rom or kernel etc you want) and select it (normally power button) you should then flash the rom. once it is flashed select back until you see reboot phone and then reboot it and you should boot up with your new rom.
What is "s" off and "s" on - s on and s off is basically the way you can tell you are rooted in the bootloader (or hboot i talked about above) at the very top you should see one of these options. what these mean is whether your phone requires a signed file (s on) or whether it can flash unsigned files (s off). for now just consider a signed file as an official file with an unsigned file being unofficial or modded.
Now hopefully this explains a bit of the basics better and gives you enough information to better understand what is going on. My recommendation is to take the steps to root flash etc 1 at a time it is easy to read through all the instructions and go wow this is confusing. it really isnt as bad as it seems and as long as you follow each step you should be fine. just do exactly what each step tells you to do and dont worry about the next steps till you are there. you still have a lot to learn and the best way you can learn it is by searching the forums think of it as your library.
many people are glad to help however as you can see from some of the posts it is expected that you at least try to learn and research things for yourself. if you get stuck on something ask and you will normally get an answer just try remember if you cant take the time to search and research things you shouldn't expect others to take the time to help. i'm not saying you did i ma jsut giving advice for the future.
anyway best of luck and hopefully this will get you in the right direction.
NOTE: i have "dumbed" down some of the explanations to give the jiest of the idea with out getting to technical so for those that are more technical it is on purposse.
Alright, as some of you know, I really, really, REALLY, messed up on my last root attempt.
Apparently I didn't backup what I was supposed to. That was my own stupid a55 mistake and I have admitted to it.
I DO plan to attempt a root again so that I can get this theme on my phone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1042268
There are things that I need to know before I attempt this (and yes I know there are forums already on this but I need to be 110% sure)
1) How do I back up EVERYTHING on my phone and put it on my computer or SD card or somewhere that I can go to incase I mess up again?
2) What is the EASIEST program/method to root this Samsung Epic 4g?
3) (I'm not too sure what I'm talking about here ((remember, I'm a total noob)))
I tried CWM 3.0.0.5 before... is this a ROM that I attempted to go to?
3ii) If I should'nt be using CWM, what should I use?
4) Is Froyo and CWM the same time of thing? or two different things completely?
and finally:
5) Give me all of your recommendations on this please! I DON'T WANNA MESS UP AGAIN!
And please none of this "You messed up before, dont try it again!" crap, I know I messed up, and I know this is stupid, but the fact of the matter is, I'm trying it again to get this theme on my device. So PLEASE help me out!
Thanks everyone!

Ok, first things first. Not to be rude, but you are at the first step of enjoying Epic goodness; rooting your phone. It should be obvious that this step is covered ALL over XDA and a simple google search would have lead you to the following page:
CWM 3.0.0.5
There are already wayyyy too many threads asking questions that were answered long before they were ever even asked in the first place.
Okay, now that that's out of the way .
1. If you're absolutely freaked about losing anything, MyBackup and MyBackup Pro will back up all your apps. Then simply plug your phone into your computer and copy the entire contents of your sd card to your harddrive. Mybackup Root can be used once your rooted and is free.
2. Use the link i posted.
3. CWM is not a Rom. It replaces the default recovery subsystem with one you can use to flash Roms. You enter it from the off state by pressing Volume Down+Camera+Power. Do not use CWM 3.0.2.4.
4. Froyo is simply the version of android. The Samsung Epic is on Froyo, or 2.2. Roms come in various flavors like Eclair(2.1), Froyo(2.2), and hopefully soon for the Epic, Gingerbread(2.3).
5. Search around the Epic Android Development for a Rom that makes you excited. A good suggestion for you would be Midnight 5.2. All you have to do is download the Rom .zip file to your SD, boot into CWM 3, Install from SD, and point it to the .zip. Read the forums for how to safely install their Roms like clearing data and making/restoring backups.
Remember, everything you've asked has been asked and answered many times, so please search next time to avoid making unnecessary threads and to gain your answer faster!

After reviewing your other posts, I am now aware that you have asked a lot of this and already been answered but are clearly not interested in reading the information presented to you. This should have been continued in the last thread that you started, but what's done is done. Your key problem is rooting with CWM which converts the file system to EXT4. You will have to flash a new rom or kernel immediately following or the phone can't boot. This means that you must have a new rom or kernel .zip file on your sd card PRIOR TO ROOTING. I haven't messed around too much with a rooted stock rom, but at the least you need a new kernel, search for and try VisionKernel if thats all you want.
Please refrain from starting any more threads, you've already been given more information than you need by myself and others. Search around XDA, it can be fun!

There is no unzipping. In CWM, you simply select "Install from sd", point to your .zip file, and tell it to start. CWM is pretty straight forward to navigate. It will probably take a couple minutes, after which you will select the Reboot option and watch your phone load.

What randomking said....and
I didn't see what the red angry alien theme was designed for.... it just says ec05...ec05 is the latest build of froyo we have. Because all you want is a theme I'm going to suggest you do the oneclick root cwm version 2.5.5(stock file system).
I assume you'll need to be on a deodexed rom to flash that, but you may want to try it(since you learned how to odin you can just about recover from anything) and see if it works.
After you run the oneclick 2.5.5 root your good to go, just boot back into clockworkmod(2.5.5 is green text and not orange) click down to backup/restore, click on it and then click backup. This is what's called a nandroid. A nandroid is a complete backup of your entire system, including all user data. The only thing it will not backup is the kernel, since your not changing the kernel it won't matter. If you have problems or mess up you just wipe everything/factory reset/cache/dalvik cache and instead of going to backup, you select restore....blaam exactly the way your phone was when you backed it up. BTW backing up and restoring takes about 10minutes and don't try it when your battery is almost dead.
Hope that helps a bit more and don't rush it, the theme will be here for a long while I'm sure.

Hey all! So, a couple weeks back, I flashed a BETA ICS ROM onto my Inspire (Desire HD). Being my normal ignorant, and noob-like self, I completely ignored the fact that the thread said "DEVS ONLY!"
Well, flash forward a couple of weeks, and my Inspire is all but bricked. The ROM did not have mobile data yet, did not have a connection to the micro-SD card, and it was not touchscreen ready yet. I have tried ADB, but to no-avail, my file system knowledge and overall lack of knowledge put me quite a predicament.
I have flashed many ROMs before, but I sincerely messed up big time on this try. So, would any of you be able to help me find a cure for this important issue? Is the fix really simple and easy, and I am just a bonehead?
Thanks!
Not sure what your issue is. You never clearly stated. Does the phone not boot? Stuck in the splash screen? you want to flash a new rom?

Oops, sorry! My problem is that my phone is stuck on the developer ROM, and I would like to fix it somehow. So, yes, I would like to get another ROM, but I have to remove this one first. The phone itself works great, but with no wi-fi, mobile data, and no touchscreen support, it is hard to live with.
Your nowhere near bricked. Going to ask the basics. Did you make a backup before hand? Did you have another rom on your SD card.?
If you answered yes to either then simply boot into recovery and flash the rom/ backup. You mentioned flashing roms before so I left out the steps.
If you answered no then you have two options. You can mount the SD card from within cwr. So download a rom on your PC. Mount the sd card, then flash away. Or take out SD card and use an adapter/other phone to transfer a new rom.
I was not smart enough to back up onto a computer, but I did back up onto the SD card. The only problem with this is that the ROM, and my computer, will not recognize that there is in fact an SD card inserted into the phone. So, in other words, it's like not having an SD card at all.
CWR will still read the sd card. Trust me. boot into CWR and restore your backup. And you be good as gold
Thanks! But, what exactly does CWR stand for? Haha, I'm not the most knowledgeable on the topic of Android, but is it like Clock Work Mod?

yeah. CWR stands clockworkmod recovery
Okay, in that case, I'm not sure. All of my old files (CM7, CWM, etc.) were on the SD card, and it is unreachable. I have tried to boot into CWR, but it just gives me a black screen. I feel like this thing is just unable to be fixed!
its fixable. just the black screen in CWR is an obstacle. worst case is you have flash an ruu and start over with the whole rooting. i remember reading about the black screen in CWR give me a few minutes to find them to see what to do next
Okay! Thanks a bunch!
Pull the battery and put back in
Press and hold vol-down
Press power and bootloader will start
Select recovery using vol keys and press power
If you have a backup (you really should, and and if you don't consider this experience a learning one), restore it by selecting the backup / restore option
If no backup, goto mounts and select as storage, plug usb into pc and copy your favorite Rom over, then select back and flash from zip, select the zip and you should all be back up
But please, please I'm all for people learning and experimenting, but might be worth reading some of the basics guides and notes on roms before flashing the next one. Oh, and if I forgot to mention.... Do a backup before flashing ANYTHING saves heartache later, the enjoy

THANK YOU! I remember this now! Thanks everyone
Your welcome, after all, we all have to learn sometime

ok i couldn't find the specific thread i was looking for. i remember it being stickied but couldnt find it. did find something that might be usefull but it depends on if you have access to an sd card adapter or other phone to transfer the file needed to reflash CWR. If not i would suggest trying to see if flashing an ruu to help.
edit- I'm confused now. thought you said that when you boot into recovery all you get is a black screen?
Hello, Wondering if anyone here could help out. I recently went from MIUI US ICS rom to CM9 and love the latest build of CM9. I had not tried a backup of the rom after flashing to CM9, but noticed that Rom Manager updated at play.google.com and then I decided maybe I should make a backup of CM9 sine it was shaping up pretty nicely as I've been setting up apps, etc.
Well, I can't get into recovery. I can boot into the bootloader and it shows Revolutionary as the boot loader and I can get into Fastboot but if I toggle down to recovery and press the power button it just jumps back to the bootlloader screen. I can't get past this.
I'm tempted to put a different recovery on here now as the rom manager didn't work out even though it came stock on my CM9.
But before I risk bricking my phone, I was hoping someone here could back me up a bit and give me some input. I really don't know that much about this.. I can root phones, install recoveries, etc., but if something goes wrong I'm not knowledgeable enough to actually understand what went wrong and how to fix. I am guessing that recovery is not actually installed here and that Revolutaionary (what I used long ago to get root) wasn't planned to be the boot here.
Help please anyone!!!!!

It's been a while since I've done someting like that. By this you mean place a recovery package on the zip card, press the power button at the bootloader, then let the phone install the recovery when it runs thru the fastboot screen?
If yes, great, I remember that, but which recovery should I download? And what about rom manager on CM9? Does it care which recovery is installed?
I appreciate the knowledge here. IT sure is appreciated when things go wrong for folks like myself!
Oh, I should point out that I can stil boot into the phone and use it. The whole issue is limited to getting into recovery to create and/or restore backups of the rom.

1st off, I should shun you for being corrupt with CWM, but I'll help ya out.
Use the search bar and type in "Smelkus recovery" find a themed recovery zip you like and rename it "PC36IMG.zip" and place on the root of your SD card (in no folders) boot to boot loader and let it search, press volume up to update recovery and boom! You have new, better recovery.
As for flashing CM9, check out Jmzs CM9 nightlies. Its better and (supposedly) almost has Wimax working. Once you flash an Amon Ra based recovery, CWM becomes basically useless. So ditch it for the good of everyone. ENJOY
EDIT: Because I'm NICE, here's the link.

Wow, much nicer recovery than any I've used. Thank you for that! I didn't actually intend to put on CWM, but now I'll make it a point to avoid . I did search for JMZS CM9 nightlies. Was going to try it but not getting any hits to lead me where I think you are leading. WOld I find JMZS nightlies here at xda or outside? I did a google search and got nothing other than your post to me above.
Anyhow, thanks for the help folks!

Well can I pick your brain once more? I decided to update my wifes phone from MIUI to CM9. She happened to have Clockwork recovery 5.0.2.2. on the phone which I recall was put there by whatever rooting routine I used. Before installing CM9, I tried to update the recovery with Smelkus from the clockwork recovery 5.0.2.2 that's on the phone to smelkus, but when I try to flash it, the smelkus recovery just sits there "parsing" so when I bail out and go back to check, the clockwork version recovery is still there.
This phone was rooted with Revolutionary but I notice that S-ON is still active. I read that S-OFF is not necessary to install a recovery --- at least not the clockwork version that is on this phone. I'm not sure if that's causing the problem or not. Any advice?
Try this one. It should work.

Gave it a try, same result. What do you think might be going on? I wonder if I should try and flash it with the same one that's stuck in the phone first then try the others? Clueless really what's happening.

Hello... d-b-s
By chance have you seen this recovery located here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=29266458
I have a spare evo that is sorta-bricked or sorta screwed, not sure which... It has a SD slot that seems to be locked out. Nothing can be read from it but I did get it working once but lost it. ANd it also doesn't boot unless I have a power plug in it, but otherwise, it works, flashes, etc.. it's got CM9 right now in it but again somewhat useless without the SD memory.... anyhow, it's been a plaything for me figureing I'll either fix it, learn or kill it. None has happened yet.. but in searching for getting a recovery installed that uses the screen hard buttons versus the volume (this rocker switch on volume is broken too), I installed this recovery and it's different than anythign else... fully menuized .. real customized, and thought I would mention it to you.
If you have a look at it, let me know what you think.

I'm familiar with twrp. I don't much care for it though. A dew tricks with smelkus is it has touch scrolling, and the bottom buttons work as up+down+back+select..
Also I might know of a fix for the SD card not being read. I'll get back to you with that.

d-b-s,
That would be fantastic if you had a clue on the SD card. I did try a FastBoot string that reset it once the first time and it worked, but somehow I lost it again. I think a corrupt or defective SD card started the whole problem and restarted it when I put it's data SD back in.
Do you ride a motorcycle or have a boat? If so, stop by here please www.streetglo.net and pick yourself out something. I'd like to send it to you. You have helped me more than you know. I can't reciprocate with knowledge but I have other ways.. Let me know what you see you like. Thanks!!!!

P.S. Yea, I know you don't want anything for your help.. Just pick out something you can use and I'll be a better man for it. At least I think it works that way!

I really appreciate the kind gesture but I wouldn't like anything in return. Helping people with their problems and teaching them what I know is enough of a reward.
Please do me a favor and enjoy yourself. Best of wishes to you.
