I just tried to update my ICS Galaxy S2 to JB 4.1 through Samsung Kies, and the update process took a dump on me and I spent the better part of the last two hours getting the phone up and running again. The phone is rooted, and the recovery installed is Clockworkmod touch. My battery was right at about 51% when I started, so it may have had something to do with it im not sure. Anybody successfully updated? If so can you please share your story? Thanks.
No problems for me, but I returned everything to stock first. Stock recovery included. Might've been your issue

I had no problem updating a few days ago. Was running stock rooted ICS with CWM non-touch recovery. It took close to 2 1/2 hours including updating Kies, but it worked fine. My battery was probably closer to 85% (and I have a big aftermarket battery).
I did a few days back also. No problems when I ran it for the day.
Officially, I think the battery should be at 80% for Kies to let you update, but that is not important now.
My first attempt bricked the phone, I tried taking it to a third PC for the emergency recovery and it did not work on that PC at all.
I got a replacement phone instead of trying again, but on the 3rd and final PC it worked fine.
The first 2 PCs had windows XP while the final was W7, I don't think windows was the issue, but on the first 2 I did sometimes have issues detecting the phone, so I unplugged and plugged it back in a few times for it to connect. I think that was the key to the problem.
On the final machine it connected fine first time and every time. I still don't know why this happened. I have 2 more phones to update and am wondering if I should try the first 2 machines again or play it safe and use the one that worked?
Good luck.

You will lose root, but it's very easy to re-root. I rooted four T989s in about ten minutes.
Using kies, went to update my wife's phone the other day with it having like 20% battery and it gave me an error message before starting saying my battery was to low. When it came to my rooted phone I used Odin and lost root. It was pretty easy for me to root it back and start installing custom ROMs.

Just did it today and it worked fine. Had to reinstall a newer version of Java for Kies to upgrade itself properly, but once I did that it was smooth sailing.
Hi all,
now please don't laugh: what exactly is the advantage of getting JB over ICS?
thanks.

I managed to soft brick my phone on the first attempt to use kies. Fortunately, the phone was sick on Odin download mode. I used Odin too flash a new ics image and the second time, the kies to 4.1.2 worked just fine. My original OS version was ics from the tm ota update on a new phone.

There are a bunch of improvements, they took out a lot of bloatware and fixed a bunch of glitches so JB is a lot faster and smoother than ICS. Also they brought back some features that were taken out of ICS like a Contacts button in the phone (I never understood why they took it out in the 1st place)...

Sent from my SGH-T989D using xda app-developers app
I was on a rooted Stock ICS and I used Kies for the update. It was successful, but of course I lost root. Since then the phone has been faster, smoother and has better battery life. I still have not manged to re-root using either CWM nor TWRP, even after re-flashing the stock JB via ODIN, (I am still working on this).

think again.
Just to be safe you should always odin back to the last stock rom before doing an update through kies. You dont have to but I get nothing but pasper weights if I dont. I never had a problem with kies with a completly stock phone though. And I think thje batt is 80% but I always charge it to 100% just in case.

So I have previously rooted my phone. I flashed it back to stock using the stock firmware. Updated my phone to the official ICS release. Now after i upgraded the phone would not recognize my sim and it would only display the notification bar. There is nothing where my background and apps used to be. I tried samsung support and they suck balls. I also tried the leaked rom and the same thing happens.
Did you try to call ATT?
Getting this exact same issue, and I updated from stock. Never rooted or modified the device at all.
The same thing happened to me, I updated from stock. ATT had me wipe the whole phone and now I have to send it back for RMA.
Yeah, we're in the att warranty center. They're trying to flash it, and are going to replace it if it doesn't take.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
All they did was flash the device back to 2.3.5 and give me a "try again and see if it works."
Well, tried it again. It didn't work.
Need to find a way to get back to 2.3.5 at home so I can use this phone until I've got a chance to RMA it.
--Edit--
Got it back to 2.3.5 using by flashing CWM6, Inception, then using Odin to get back to 2.3.5, factory resetting at every step. Tried using Kies, the ICS leak, the CWM Flashable version of the leak, nothing works. I get no information other than it force closes the Installer after about a minute at the black screen (which has a status bar, and allows me to pick WiFi networks and set up a Samsung account).
I'm at a loss. Going to have to wait for AT&T to either RMA it or update their warranty center flash to ICS. Either way, leaving it at 2.3.5 for now. If any dev feels adventurous and wants to try to tackle this, just PM me and I'll get you any info you want/need.
It happened to me when I updated to ICS two days ago. Exact same thing, black screen, notification bar only, no service. Once in a while I would get a message about "application installer" not responding.
Long story short, I just waited and it sorted itself out. Maybe something was installing the whole time, I don't know. It took an extra day for my service to come on.

Maybe 2-3 hours? I would give it overnight at least before sending it in.
Gave it about 24 hours and it completed. It's having issues seeing the SIM card. It's weird, it connected to the network without a SIM card (emergency calls only), but didn't pick up the SIM when i put it in, so i restarted it. Now is doesn't connect it see the card.
I'll play with it more tonight, just dropping by to say thanks for the help so far!

Did you flash them with CWM? And when you flashed them, did you have to wait the giant amount of time for them to come back up like I said I did earlier in the thread?
I flashed stock att the regular "download" way however I wanted to get keyboard light to work so I installed cwm6 then installed superuser and keyboard fix through cwm6. For some reason the first time I went from ics rooted to att ics I got stuck on samsung loading screen. I think it all comes down to permissions. I hope I'm making since here.
And to the time thing, no I didn't have to wait.
Try what others have said... wipe everything, install which ever version u want. But if u get stuck on samsung thing reinstall devs ics root to fix samsung loop

Hi,
I tried searching but couldn't find a definitive answers since there are so many topics. I have a T989.
Right now I'm rooted with CWM Recovery and STOCK version 2.3.6 of Android. Been that way for months. I think it's about time to upgrade to 4.0.4. Now my question is...do I have to put stock recovery back on the phone in order to update? Kies alerted me there's a firmware update.
If I do have to restore to stock recovery...what is the process of doing this?
If I don't have to restore to stock recovery...will anything happen if I upgrade to 4.0.4 while being rooted?
Do you recommend wiping the device before upgrading?
Thank you.
Why not just odin or flash a rooted 4.0.4?

It is not required to unroot to upgrade your software. If you want to utilize rooted stock you can upgrade it using the stock firmware and pushing it through odin. Kies is unstable and I've encountered many that kies causes more problems then assistance. In reality is up to you. My understanding is that you do need to be completely stock for kies to complete the update. I prefer odin (7mins compared to almost an hour with kies), and no you don't have to wipe to do it through odin, however is going to wipe it for you...with the exception on any media you have stored on internal.
I will warn you, stock ics is very very wonky and often lags something wicked. Just be prepared...

I don't want to upgrade really...but I'm having too many issues. My phone keeps rebooting itself or will freeze. My WiFi calling is acting up...telling me to update my 911 address when it is already there, and have already re-updated it. When making a phone call, or changing brightness using the widget, it will hang for like 30 seconds before the call goes through...etc.
I feel like the ICS update will resolve some of those issues.
Personally I would update via Kies to the newest official release (4.0.4 ICS I think) I also think if you update via Kies you will have to re-root the phone unless you don't want to do that and just run stock ICS. There usually is a BIG difference in positive directions when they release official firmware. What could it hurt? Having to re-root which only takes 5 minutes max?

Yes in most cases. Gb on this device was terrible in my experience. Use odin...i flash back to stock ever more and then to tinker inside the device as i learn to mod roms. Fishing through odin is a breeze and takes up less system resources from your comp...and its FASTER! but that's just my opinion

Do you mean FH13? The reason it isn't taking the update is because it has a custom recovery. The device must have stock recovery, and in my experience, no removed stock apps if running stock w/root.

You can just save the hassle of all this stock recovery if you want... by using this one click (non rooted) update to FH13
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1835033
You should be able to find the complete one click odin method that does not do a data wipe. So of you upgraded to fh13 and want to go back to ff18. Then find the one click no data wipe and that may do it. If you want tl go back to el29 do the same thing. However going back from ics to without a data wipe could prove faulty. But you could odin back to ff18 then do a titanium back up to back up all apps and data. Then do a complete odin based wipe back to el29 then try and restore via titanium. That may give you the all around solution you guys are looking for. But it's all theoretical have not tried this exact method myself but should work.

I don't know about other's experiences, but my phone seems to be much more responsive in general after the update. Apps load and quit quicker, launcher is faster and smoother, and battery life is still about the same (very good for me at about 10% every 3hrs). I'm enjoying it quite a bit. Other than two weird resets in the first hour after updating, I have had no problems since and everything (wifi, LTE, GPS, etc) is working fine. The best thing for me is that K9 mail is so much faster and responsive with my 7 imap accounts.
PS - I was really hoping for the 3D panorama camera in this update, but alas no such luck.

Try these images.
Just downloaded the rooted Bell 4.1.1 rom and attempted to flash with mobile ODIN.
But this resulted in boot loop.
Could the stock recovery have be preventing this from working?
Should I flash CWM now?
The recovery you're using shouldn't matter, particularly.
I'm not really familiar with the way Mobile Odin does things; I would have used regular desktop Odin to do things.
Generally, you see a boot loop with stock images if you're going back and forth between stock and non-stock and you did not wipe cache/data during the process. You can carry out said wipes with the stock recovery.
Good, just did it on good ol' regular odin and it worked.
No idea what caused the loop with Mobile Odin, I was going from stock 4.0.4 (w/ root) to stock 4.1.1 (w/root).
Is this for real??

Yes it is. KitKat is now available for the Canadian Note II and S III.

Forget it, you won't be able to get it through official OTA.
Once you're rooted, your only way to update is to wait for someone to create a flashable zip of the update, flash the entire ROM by downloading from samfirmware or wait for a custom ROM.

I wouldn't recommend this update. I updated this morning and everything seemed fine until I tried running Waze on the way home from work. My device was plugged into power as it usually is, but now on this new version my battery is actually discharging WHILE connected to power.
Now to look into rolling back. This is a deal breaker.

UPDATE: I disabled AVG while using toolkit, i had not using odin orginally it may be related to my issu
Be careful using the toolkit. Its been known to brick devices and cause other problems as well.
Yay. Pretty much the same as using any method I suppose. Got lucky I guess.
Is this new bootloader is locked to prevent downgrading to another bootloader ???
Its not "locked" (meaning you can still flash custom recoveries and kernels), but I fully expect it'll be the same as before with regard to downgrading.

Ok. So downgrading from 4.4 bootloader to 4.3 should not work i guess??? . Another question, With 4.4 bootloader, is it possible to flash a 4.3 Rom ???
Correct. Provided its like 4.3, you can only flash the same or newer firmware.
I believe you should still be able to flash older roms like before, but have not seen this confirmed yet.
