I noticed this happens when two different versions of Android are connecting - AOSP to TouchWiz for example. I'll assume you're running a variation of AOSP and your mother is running factory TouchWiz? Go back to TouchWiz and try again, it won't turn on your bluetooth.
Now, no, I have no idea still why it turns on bluetooth instead of using NFC. It would be interesting to put the different version of Android together to see how each interacts with one another - AOSP, Sense, TouchWiz, Optimus, Experia, Motoblur, etc and see what happens.

Hmm. I know when two S3s do it, Bluetooth doesn't turn on. So, then I guess the Note and Galaxy have slightly different versions of TouchWiz. I guess, I don't know.

Then still, it must be there versions of TouchWiz. Two S3 will not turn on bluetooth.
Two s3's sharing will initiate the connection via nfc and will complete the transfer via WiFi direct (better transfer bandwidth and range so the devices don't have to remain touching). Dissimilar devices must use bluetooth when WiFi direct is unavailable.

yes i can confirn that...few moments ago do this with 2 galaxy S3 and dont activate bluetooth...test with other phones like S2 or Note 2 turn on bluetooth...so think this issue is resolved...thanks for your tips
Bluetooth switches ON during NFC transfer
I tried transferring media between Sony Xperia M and Sony Xperia L. The transfer takes place via bluetooth and not through NFC. The android versions are same on both the phones. Why does this still occur?

Do Note, given the same Antenna for NFC and Bloetooth, the same undelying APK controls both. So Android Beam may activate both. Perfectly normal.

Sony's implementation of NFC has been traditionally flaky. Plus see what I responded above.

Depends on Rom and Kernel. Possibly the code activated the icon. As I said earlier, the Antenna is the same.
Hmm. Same thing happens on my s3 but in a different situation. When I open bluetooth to transfer files and finished transferring, the nfc automatically turns on. I notice this prob after the update. Is there any software or hardware issue on my phone.. thanks

Hey guys
I treid today to use the wifi direct function but i cant configure like the sgs2,.
Tryin to send a movie from a sgs2 to my GN but it didn't work anyone an idea or some help
Thnx in advance

Same here. This morning I tried to setup Wifi-Direct on GN but was a no go. My SGS2 has Wifi direct configuration where you can name your device and setup password etc plus scan for other devices. GN however doesn't have anything like this and you can only turn it ON or OFF. SGS2 scanned for 2 mins and wasn't able to see GN.
Do I need any applications or is there something that myself and OP is missing?
I tried this this morning with a coworker who has a GN too but couldn't figure it out. I also tried the beam thing which says you can just magically hold them back to back and it works? Are there apps that need to be installed to get these things working?
Anyone have any links to literature on beam and wifi direct?
Bump.
This thing does seem odd enough to be worthy of some bumping.

It's a new technology that should allow compatible devices to connect to each other over wifi to transfer files without an access point. Pretty much an ad hoc type network.
I would assume we should be able to use it to connect to other GN but it MAY just be OS support and we need an actual application to make it work?
Bump. This is incredibly annoying.

Beam works fine. Try opening a homepage, and it will ask to transmit when touching another Nexus
Sendt fra min Galaxy Nexus
Seems like maybe they have only baked the API into the OS, but we need devs to create apps that make it useful, based on the Platform Highlights for 4.0 and the Demo app they released. Bummer. Some patient waiting to do, I guess.
I've searched the market for a "wifi-direct" app but there doesn't seem to be one.
Anyone else found anything?
Apparently not a very popular option among people out there.
bump. ytd nite trying to transfer all the songs and ringtones from my GalNote to GalNex using wifi direct, then dunno how to proceed cz totally cant find any settings or configuration in GalNex. enabled both wifi direct, den GalNote can detact my GalNex but failed to connect :X
Bump. My brother has sgs2 and I looked dumb trying to try wifi direct....nothing happens. No options besides on/off

Me too, I tried setup my gn wifi direct, but it w/o any setting, then i use my bro s2 to search my gn mobile, s2 search the name called android xxx, i think this is my mobile, bcs when i off my gn wifi direct, s2 cant search any mobile, when i tried connect my gn mobile, but finally after i wait over 2 mins it still not success.
I think we can conclude if you need to check with forums on the internet and still haven't started transmitting anything two weeks later, it's not a very "direct" sort of technology.
So people at the office have Wifi-direct and I have Android beam. And neither works with each other.
This is Android-awesomeness right now.
Anyone found out how it works? sorry for the bump but good be very useable...
I haven't tried this but it is at least a suggestion. Try opening the gallery, opening a picture and then hitting the share button. Maybe there is an option in there for wi-fi direct?
EDIT: Nevermind. Looks like I mis-understood what this feature was.
Check out this to see if it helps?
http://developer.android.com/resources/samples/WiFiDirectDemo/index.html
http://developer.android.com/reference/android/net/wifi/p2p/package-summary.html
"remember that the feature is supported only on Android 4.0 (API level 14) and higher versions of the platform. " So looks like you have to connect to another device running ICS
wifi is there but not functional yet
guys in galaxy nexus the capability to use WIFI direct is there but not programmed and left to be added as an add on or so .. developers need to make a program or even a rom to enable this feature but most likely google will adapt the samsung software for wifi direct just like SGSII ..
hope someone just develop it soon
Yep it's purely an api for developers to use in order to connect to the same app(or another one with an official api) running on another device.
Google may very well add this into the gallery and so on, but for now it's a developer option. The implementation on the sgs2 on the other hand does not allow for developers to add in AFAIK and it's purely for use in the samsung apps.
I compiled and installed that WifiDirectDemo app and it doesn't really work. The GN and SGS2 see each other but the connection does nothing.
Works on Many Samsung TouchWiz based ROMs. Confirmed Working on Galaxy S2, S3, Tab 10.1
For some reason, beyond my comprehension, Samsung have this great app, but have yet to open it up to the SGS3. I have been resorting to downloading it and installing it on my HTC HD2 (Running CM9) backing it up with Titanium, and then copying the backup over to my SGS3, and restoring the backup. A bit round about, but works.
The App, for those that don't know, allows you, with a Samsung high-end TV or BR-Player, use the app to not only as a remote, but as a second mirrored screen, with audio. Great for trips to the kitchen, bathroom, outside, or in another room (although range is limited by your router).
[Supported TV Models]
- Samsung Smart TV released in 2011:
Models greater or equal to LED 7000, PDP 8000
- Samsung Smart TV released in 2012:
Models greater or equal to LED ES7500,(Models greater or equal to LED ES7000 in Europe, Models greater or equal to PDP E8000 Models(E7000 Models in North America)
[Supported Phone]
While technically only SGS2, it works with SGS3 stock rooted rom, but should work on most with a stock base. It will not work on CM9/10 and ASOP ROM's but you could give it a try and let me know.
Here is the actual app, I extracted it from my Titanium backup figuring someone could use it until Samsung get around to updating the Market to let you just download it. The only thing I can't get to work is Bluetooth power on. I can pair with my TV, but it just doesn't show up until I have turned it on. I also had an issue with it working over the the 5Ghz 802.11n band, but with 3.1.9 that doesn't seem to be an issue anymore.
Version 3.1.9 - 39MB - Confirmed Working for me with 2011 PDP51D8000 Model
Version 3.2.0 - 40MB - Also Confirmed working
Older Version 3.1.7 for those of you with issues
The Full description from Google Play:
[About the Application]
This application is Wi-Fi remote control for Samsung Smart TV. If both your phone and TV are connected to the same wireless Router, your phone will link to the TV automatically where you can use your phone like a remote control. The TV can also transfer live feeds to your phone.
[Main Features]
- Dual View
Enjoy TV and other multimedia right from your mobile device that’s connected to Samsung Smart TV. You can even send what you’re watching on your mobile device to TV and watch it from TV.
- Bluetooth PowerOn {I will add, never got this to work, despite pairing TV}
You can use your mobile device to turn on your TV using Bluetooth (available for certain TV and mobile devices only).
- Remote
Your mobile device can work as remote for your Samsung TV or BD products. Full remote screen is provided by default, and three tabs are provided at the bottom of the screen to help you control connected devices with ease. On screen keyboard shows up automatically when you need to enter text.
- Game Controller
With this feature, your mobile device can control games on TV. Full and Simple modes are available. Turn on Gyro function on your mobile device, and control games by tilting your mobile device.
- Movie Note (Models BD-E5900 or above, HTE4000or above (US only))
You can get information of DVD/BD title on your mobile, while you watching movies.
Ratings, synopsis, cast and director's information will be provided.
- Audio Settings (Models HT- E4000 or above)
You can control your speaker system by your phone.
Sound mode, distance of each speaker and sound level(dB) can be changed.
- Remote Scheduler (Models BD-E8000 series, STB-E7000 series EU/Australia/New Zealand Only)
Recording TV shows through your TV when you're outside.
- Settings
You can fine-tune control for TV and BD by adjusting gesture sensitivity in your mobile device.
[How to set up]
1.Check if Wireless Remote Control or Network Remote Control is enabled in your TV’s System or Setup menu. If you don’t see either of them in the menu, Samsung Smart View App can’t be used in your mobile device.
2.Connect wireless/wired router to TV LAN port, or connect Samsung Wireless LAN adapter to TV USB port.
3.Connect your phone to wireless/wired router.
Saving this potentially for a place to list the Rom's it works with. for now it is just:

Glad it helped, It just doesn't make sense to not allow the direct download. It clearly works on the SGS3, so it makes no sense. They have also updated the app several times since the SGS3 release 3.17 was the version I first installed. So they are working on the app, just wish they would switch it on for us to access right from market.
P.S. If this app helped you, please hit thanks

You may have to look around your TV menus for the option to turn on networked remotes. I had an issue where I somehow disabled my phone and could not get it to connect. Also are you using a 2.4ghz or 5ghz router, if using one, try the other. Finally check your router settings, to see if there is something there preventing connectivity.

Unfortunately, all this has already been verified. Consider that already use a Samsung Galaxy SII and it works great, therefore the router is fine. Among the other with the 'SIII the program works, but also sees the TV when the connection is disconnected after a few seconds by sending an error message that says: "the first use to connect to the internet" .... ideas?

I am not exactly sure what you are seeing. Are you using a stock rom? If you see the TV in the list, but Dual View is not working, then it isn't seeing your phone as supported for Dual View. This could be a build.prop issue, or a necessary file is missing. If it isn't seeing your TV, then there is a connection issue. This is what I had with 802.11n 5Ghz. When on 5Ghz, I couldn't see my TV, back to 2.4Ghz and all was fine. I thought this issue resolved on 3.19.
You may try resetting your router, trying it insecure to see if you can get it to work, but I guess it can be a bit flakey for some. There is nothing inherent in the application, that I know of, that should prevent it from working on the SGS3, unless the ROM you are using is modified. In that case, make a Nandroid backup, install a stock (Rooted if you like) ROm and test again, if it works, it is your ROM, if it doesn't, it is your network.

From the router side I would agree, if you see the tv in the app, router is fine. The only thing I can think of is if this is an ITALIAN version issue. I know that when upgrading to ICS some stock ROMs for the SGS2 stopped working. I think this may be the case and something in the localization is causing the connection issue.
In your case maybe try to port the app over from your sgs2 as it could also contain something specific. You can use my method from the first post. Otherwise I am afraid you may need another rom but that's also going to depend on what ROMs it runs on. I only know it works on US T-Mobile but with close to 300 downloads yours is the first time I have seen it not work so there is hopefully a stock based ROM for you with enough not removed to let this app work.
Sorry it isn't better news. As a last resort, you could try to factory reset, install only this app. That way you can ensure no other app is interfering.
Good luck, let me know how it works out.

lol, thanks. Actually i was hoping an answer from anyone having problems.
I was having them quite often, figured out it was only when I had DSP manager or Awesome beats installed AND set to modify the bluetooth sound. Not sure if this is your case or not but thought I would chime in. To fix I just unchecked ALL options under bluetooth then unpaired. (Turn off BT go into BT on phone, unpair, turn BT on phone off, reboot phone) then I repaired and no more disconnects.

I got lots of disconnections from my car audio system.
My heart rate monitor and nokia head set disconnects too much. Over 5 times in one hour.
My wife's GN also disconnects from her Kenwood head unit. Far less frequently than mine, but it happens. I'm surprised more people haven't chimed in on this issue. My dad just got his GN yesterday so I'll check his tonight to see if it too suffers from this problem.

at least i am not the only one with problems. Since i never tested bluetooth in stock ICS i thought it could be some hardware problem. But apparently other people have too ...

i notice Bluetooth issues when connected to my motorcycle helmet.
using stock or other custom roms it will start to cut out or skip when i put the phone in my pocket and at highway speed it loses connection completely.
when using cm10 "official not the kangs" it has no issue whatsoever and the connection distance is improved 20x. i can have the phone 20 meters away and it still stays connected and even at highway speeds.

CM10 = Cyanogenmod Version 10. It is the first Jelly Bean Rom from Cyanogenmod. There are many threads on the topic but you can also find information on their site.
The official nightly releases of this version has just been released for the VZW and Sprint Galaxy Nexus as well as other devices.

So this is a bizarre situation that I hope someone might have some insight on but to be honest, I'm not expecting much
For some reason my PS Vita will connect to my phone's wifi hotspot just fine in ICS-based ROMs like CM10, however it will connect, get an IP address, and appear to communicate but time out when trying to connect to the playstation network or anything at all when using either stock Jelly Bean or any of the various edits I've tried.
I've tried about everything I can on the Vita end but there isn't a whole lot I can do there other than clear settings, try static DNS, things like that. The only thing that seems to work is using old ICS-based ROMs.
Has anyone experienced anything like this, or have any ides for deeper diagnostics I can do?

Is there anything I can do so I have enough data for a proper bug report? A netcat tool or something? How would I go about investigating this issue?

Any luck with this?
I'm on Verizon and just got pushed JDQ39. It was totally working in the previous version (which I think was 4.1.1 but I don't know). Now, like you, the Vita connects, gets an IP address, but can't connect to anything.

Is there some way to report it as a bug or track the bug if it already exists? Do they use code.google.com like Chromium does?

I'm on a galaxy nexus, google results brought me here because my phone's hotspot works for all other devices, but not on my vita. I'm on 4.3
Someone tell me if 4.4 will work or what I can change, downgrade to, or possibly replace as a tethering app. I've tried all the non-root ones such as foxfi with the same results.
Update, it works with liquidsmooth ics rom 4.0.4
Hi,
I've been running jelly bam lately because of the PA features (specifically per app DPI), but I recently purchased a Fitbit Flex and couldn't get it to work. I contacted their support and they just told me they don't support custom roms.. so I tried to restore my stock ATT/Samsung rom which is just version 4.1.1. The Fitbit Flex software installs and actually has the refresh button now but my phone doesn't seem to see my Flex when bluetooth is on. I think I need an update before I will be able to use the stock rom and I'm not sure how to do the updates with TWRP installed, I tried but it keeps rebooting into recovery. Anyway, I'd prefer not using the stock rom, specifically I would prefer a custom rom with PA features. I've just tried PAC-Man 4.3 nightly from last night (pac_t0lte-nightly-20130823.zip), and while my phone's bluetooth does see the device now, the Fitbit app doesn't give me the options like it did with my stock rom. Has anyone gotten the bluetooth and their Fitbit Flex to work with a custom rom with PA features?
Thanks!
If I recall, on a S3 and using a Fitbit One, you won't see the Fitbit except inside the app. There is a "devices" section in the app which lets you check the sync box. If you don't see that then the phone isn't seeing the Fitbit. Stock rom on the S3 works fine. Any custom rom will show you stats pulled from the web but not allow you to sync from the phone. I believe their app is the problem and not necessarily the phone or rom. Anyway, I've learned to live without syncing from the phone since stock firmware just isn't for me.

This is all exactly the same on my Note 2, but even my stock doesn't rom work. Like I said, possibly due to the old version 4.1.1. Under the stock rom the app shows all the additional options like you mention, but my phone's bluetooth never sees the Flex. I wonder what the Fitbit app uses to determine whether to show the additional options or not. I included screenshots to my "about device". I noticed that my model number was different with the new rom and thought maybe that might have something to do with it because clearly it's not (or not just) the android version.
Have you tried a stock 4.1.2 build ??

Can someone link a stock rom for me? I have the GPe of the GS4. i9505G, and I have AT&T. Started out with SGH-i337
Fitbit Sync
I got FitBit to Sync finally with my custom rom.
I used the Build Prop Editor from JRummy. play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jrummy.apps.build.prop.editor
change the ro.product.model=GT-I9505G
and ro.product.manufacturer=samsung
and save those settings, reboot, and now Fitbit will try to sync now. YAY! :victory:

I followed those tips and got it working on my Galaxy S3 AT&T running Carbon ROM...
but now the Dilbert app is telling me that my device is not supported... which is weird because it's just an app to view the daily comic strip.

Just one thing to try, my FitBit wouldn't initially synchronise with any of my devices (all custom ROM)...but I then tried removing the gel cover and plastic rear battery cover of the phone (an S3), held it very close to the FitBit and it then sync'ed fine!
It seems that this new low-power Bluetooth protocol is a little too low on the power element
Note 2 & Fitbit/Bluetooth Problems
I came here looking for answers/help with my bluetooth... but so far I haven't really been able to find anything that's actually helpful. I can share with everything what I've been able to find out, though.
I have a Galaxy Note 2 running stock on Android 4.4.2 and I have the Fitbit Flex. I used to sync without any problems but after my phone updated to 4.4.2 it no longer syncs. After researching for a few days... it seems the problem is with the Update itself... it reduces power or range of Bluetooth... that's why the Flex cannot sync to it. However, I have discovered an quick fix to that:
When syncing, just place your phone on top of your Flex band and it will sync up without any problems. This has become my temporary solution. Someone else suggest another quick fix would be to turn on Mobile Hotspot on your phone... that is suppose to increase the Bluetooth Power.
I also learned that Samsung won't update the Note 2 to 4.4.4, which would have fixed this problem.. but instead will Update the Note 2 to Lollipop... but that date is still unannounced.
If anyone has any ideas on how to really fix this problem... I'm all ears. The only solution I found was to open up the phone and do something to the bluetooth chip inside... but I forgot where I found that solution.
