what if the guy that stole your phone immediately goes recovery and resets the phone ?
is there a way to lock an app on the system so even if you full wipe you would still keep its data ?
is there a way to lock the recovery/download ?

Not sure how to answer your questions, but here are some security apps I use. Keeps you safe and sound. Lookout apps have ways to lock your phone remotely, wipe it, locate it, and it will even take a pic of the person who turns it on if it has a front facing camera if it gets stolen.

call your carrier and give them your imei number and have it locked.
Unfortunately if the person that steals your phone knows how to get in to recovery mode and wipe your device there isn't much that can be done about it except reporting it stolen and having the imei nber blacklisted
This thing makes calls too ?

There is only so much you can do to protect yourself. If someone wants something bad enough no amount of security will stop them. Goes for phones, to cars, to safes. Somewhere somehow someone can break all security measures, and wipe/remove everything.

agreed. but there should be at least a pin or something to lock the recovery/download to protect ourselves from primitive thieves

When i place a call and put the phone to my ear and then pull back away the screen does not "wake". It stays de-activated, no matter what i do. Eventually the only thing to do is to hold the power button down long enough for the phone to reboot.
Stock ROM, no root.
Thanks for any help anyone can offer.
WTF
I tested by laying the phone flat on a surface, placed a call, and then put my hand over the proximity sensor. The screen turned black as it should. When I removed my hand it did not come back on. Again, the only solution is to reboot the phone. So, the proximity sensor is not working correctly. Is this a known issue and is there a way to fix?
BUMP!
I'm in the self test module and am running the "sensors" test. I'm not sure when this ends if it ends at all or what values that proximity sensor field should have.
Anybody? Bueller?
Apparently Q&A isn't the place to post this? This is dissapointing coming from the E4GT forums which were super responsive.
Cool yer jets. It's only been a few hours. What ROM? Rooted? Any other mods that might affect it?

LOL
I said no root stock ROM
Anyway, I turned off the proximity sensor, verified that it was off, then turned it back on. It works now. Bizarre.
Sorry to get pissy.

NOT FIXED
So after a reboot the proximity sensor does not work on calls again. I turned it off and then back on and still no luck. I didn't actually make a call, but obviously I shouldn't have to do this every time i reboot the phone, so clearly there is an issue. It appears to be software since I got it to work once.
Any ideas? Thanks.

After insalling a new screen my phone acted the same. I opened it up again and found a tiny piece of plastic form the old screen inside the proximity sensor hole.
I know your problem is not this, just wanted to share

hmmm interesting. I think this is likely a software issue on mine. it would be dumb to have to return it since i'm confident there's a way to fix it.

That solution wasn't very good aha, what I would suggest you root your phone without tripping the flash counter and install a custom rom to see if the issue still exists, if yes you should return the phone.

thanks well it's brand new and it may be hardware related so i'd rather just get a fresh device then sweat dealing with root yet. this is why i waited to root it. I appreciate your effort though .

Plus I don't think just rooting it is a sound fix strategy.

Nope. An expert thief will bypass everything.
However,
If the person who stole your phone is a regular guy, your best chance is an anti-theft android software. Don't you want to find who stole your phone?
Anti-theft apps like "Lookout", "Cerberus", "Prey" and "Android Lost" offer a wide range of options for finding or protecting your device: taking pictures of the thief, GPS location, sounding an alarm, locking the phone, wiping the data completely, and more.
Press thumps up if you found this suggestion helpful.

I was fiddling with my phone settings and testing a few features. WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT ENABLE THE TALKBACK FEATURE.
After enabling this feature, my phone began to freeze on every screen while the voice assistant keeps speaking as I try to press anything on the screen. The entire phone just bugs out. Can't swipe or scroll. Can't select anything. Can't get to the settings to disable the talkback feature because I can't scroll. Can't do anything basically.
So, here I am with a brand new unusable HTC One M8. This is my 2nd NEW HTC One M8 that has defective software. My first one couldn't read any SIM cards after 3 new SIM cards were attempted by a T-Mobile rep.
Try factory reset.

Can't. As I mentioned, I cannot swipe or scroll. Factory reset requires scrolling to 'Factory Reset'. Not only that, I cannot select anything unless I get "lucky". The phone doesn't do anything I want it to do. I have a vid of the issue but I can't link it to this thread because I'm a new user.
If you have an HTC One M8, you can test this feature yourself and let me know if you run into the same problem but I warn you... if you run into the same problem, you will need to get it replaced and your phone won't work. Would be nice to know if this is a common problem but I'm not sure people are willing to take that chance and basically break their phone on purpose. It's like telling someone to press the big red self-destruct button to see what happens lol.
Factory reset from the bootloader..... and talk back works fine. And if it does fail on my phone i re install my rom, i love my unlocked, s-offed M8. Makes it all so easy

Wish I could show you the vid, then you'll understand exactly how impossible it is to do anything.

Nvm, I figured out how to factory reset when powering it on. I guess my Talkback feature is just unusable?

Sorry, I think you're misunderstanding my previous explanation. I cannot swipe nor can I scroll. I cannot select anything. The entire phone becomes bugged/glitched. You'd be amazed if you could watch the short video I made of it. It's more extreme than you think. Everything just goes haywire.
I'd like to say I'm a very tech savvy person since I do a lot of computer-related design, I can build computers, troubleshoot viruses, clean my registry, and "techie" things. I'm not just some average consumer who bought a phone and doesn't know how to use a smart phone. I'm very proficient with smartphones. With that said, there is seriously something wrong with the Talkback function. Enabling it almost feels like a virus is attacking the OS. I honestly don't need to use that particular function but what if one day I do or someone else might need to use it.
I actually got a new replacement yesterday and I'm not even going to touch that function whatsoever until I find some answers and a possible solution. I have everything synced to my new phone with my contacts, multiple email accounts, apps, social media, etc. and I'm not going to risk running into that problem and being forced to factory reset my phone. If you know the pain of having to reinstall your OS on a PC which I've done dozens of time throughout the years then you'll understand how painful that process really is because you have to reinstall all your software again.
I found another bug on my new phone as well and made a thread about it already. +/- for Selfie Mode doesn't work. Just greaaaaaat.
n
u need to use 2 fingers when scrolling
LOOOOL...ROFLLLLL...
I remember the first time I ever turned talkback on. "Panic" should be included as an official feature. Obviously, like our friend here, I didn't bother to read all the operational instructions that came with it, and thought for sure I had killed my phone.
Hint: you really have to use "2 fingers" to go anywhere!
Cheers

My phone is killing me... All of a sudden when I'm in the settings there is something like ghost touch that drags the screen down. It happens only in the settings! I can't even access to the developer options to activate touch feedback! In a couple days I'm gonna try to reset the phone but for me it's problem is absurd. I don't think that this happened to anyone other than me but do you have any suggestions?

Try using screen test app from Playstore to know that your touches are getting registered as you want to.

Can you suggest me a good app? BTW I tried to lock the screen in portrait (reverse) using an app called set orientation in order to check what would happen. The screen continues to go down while it was supposed to go up instead if there were ghost touch in the bottom of the screen

The problem keeps happening, unfortunately I won't be home until Friday evening and until then I can't reset the phone because I don't have a wifi connection.
I hope that a factory reset will solve the issue but I was wondering if since this is most likely a software issue, I could flash the original firmware in case the soft reset isn't enough. I had several Sony phones before this one and I could do it without voiding the warranty and with a locked bootloader. Is it the same case for this one?

Yes. Warranty will only be void with unlocking the bootloader and misuse of the unit.
Maybe you can try to use a hair dryer to dry the phone!
Also a reboot comes in handy all the time!
Do check your charger too!
It used to happen with me on my old phone due to my sweaty hands! Fortunately this doesn't happen with me on my Honor!
Edit:Also check if you have Glove mode On in settings - smart assistance
