pretty sure they are in completely different formats....at least they used to be. I dont use CWM any more
Both are tar format for system and data, and direct partition dump for boot, but backup file names are different. Easier to just flash cwm if you need to restore one.

I haven't picked the GN yet but definitely thinking about it. I'm not understanding the cwm on the GN. I am coming from the Droid incredible and when i rooted it I could automatically get in the cwm on it. But I'm seeing that you have to flash the cwm for the GN. How will I go about doin that. Thanks. Sorry for the dumb A** question. Lol. But if i do get this phone I will be very new to it. I understand everything about the cwm and how it works but i didn't understand having to flash it on the GN. Thanks.

If I recall correctly I installed CWM through rom manager. To keep it from getting overwritten each boot I had to use root explorer to rename the stock recovery file and that was it.

Oh ok. So u didn't have to flash it on your GN

If you want CWM you will have to flash it, either through Fastboot or ROM Manager. Likely on your Incredible the root process you used also flashed CWM for you.

Hi all,
I am new to android as my personal device, but I am familiar with the OS. I am pretty tech-savvy. However, I just rooted my I-747, and no matter how hard I try I cannot flash custom roms through CWM. Keep in mind both ROMS I have tried are CM9 and 10, 10 ending in a status 7 error. 9 might have as well, but I am not sure. I just know that it was aborted. Any help here, I am not sure what is going on? Any advice would be appreciated.
Are you using the correct CWM recovery? I am downloaded rom manager and installed cwm from there, have had no issues with installing either of those roms. Don't forget to do your wipes before you install a new rom!
Hmmm that may be the issue. I rooted without tripping the flash counter and then had to use adb to get cwm working. Is there a way to uninstall it and reinstall it from Rom manager?

You can always try TWRP out as well.
Just push it to the phone via ADB or use a terminal app on the phone.
I like it more than CWM. :good:

Hey codycorexxx.... quick question on that. I have twrp as well...might sound silly...will it restore a CWM backup? I made a copy of my nanorid backup to the twrp folder. It shows up under the restore option when IN that recovery...just wanting to make sure should I need to use that backup....twrp won't have a problem flashing it.

Good thing you asked. Who knows what might have happened. I just remember reading in the TWRP thread it was incompatible. Not gonna take any risks trying myself haha.
Is it possible to delete the backup blobs in CWM? Thanks in advance.

Sv: Can I delete CWM backup blobs?
Yeah, in the clockworkmod folder on the sdcard there is a folder called blobs, erase it and you will get alot of free memory
Cheers

You won't be able to restore to the backups that those blobs pertained to.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
Ahhh! Wait. Deleting the /blobs folder would be very bad, if you wanted to restore backups! See this post by CWM's developer:

Some of you may be thinking "well, how do I delete a backup?".
First, never delete the blobs directory. This would actually delete all your backups by rendering them unusable.
Simply delete the usual backup directory, and the next time you run a backup, all the unused hash files will be automatically delete (a process known as garbage collection). The recovery will show "Freeing space..." while this is happening.

I don't think the TWRP backups should have anything to do with the blobs folder. (i could be wrong but i don't think i am) And i love your galaxy S3 rom reviews.

So i have Clockwork recovery and want to install Twrp and everything i read says to use goomanager, I just want to make sure i won't brick or mess anything up using it since it seems to easy to be true. also will my previous backups on clockwork be lost, i kind of figure they would but just want to know just in case something goes wrong. thanks for the help.
Yes your cwm backups won't work with twrp. Although as long as you don't delete them you can always go back to cwm if need be.

Can we install custom ROMS using Goomanager?
Are there any specific steps to follow if i install ROM using Goomanager.
What's so hard about rebooting to recovery directly from the os and then flashing the ROM?

I'm currently on cwm non touch recovery an want to upgrade. I'm not sure which one I should upgrade but I see a lot of devs suggest twrp touch recovery so I guess that one. Do I just download the recovery an flash it on cwm? An when I do have it installed how do I flash ROMs do I just select the ROM an the recovery will clear caches? Or do I have to flash another zip before like with cwm I flashed the super wipes?

To flash TWRP you to get Goo Manager from the play store.
Open it up and click on "flash rom"... it will ask you if you want it to find you one. Select that option.
It will then say it will DL TWRP. Once it is done with the DL it will flash TWRP to your phone.
And bam....your in the latest TWRP

Thanks!!!!! I did it already. When I'm going to flash a new ROM what do I have to do? On cwm der was the superwipe zip I had to flash before is it the same on twrp?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T989 using xda app-developers app
Dont use super wipe. Not good with TWRP.
Do a full backup first of your current rom. Do a complete wipe. When you hit the wipe option it will tell you all that it will wipe.
Next hit install from the main menu...choose you zip for your rom. Let it do its thing then reboot system.
All done
