[Q] What ROM/Kernel should I use? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

So I am not a huge veteran with ROMs and such, and I would like to know of a good ROM and kernel to flash on my GS3.
I use my phone mostly for web browsing, e-mail, light gaming, reading, and listening to music. I like the look of Touch Wiz, but I'll try anything. I would prefer a clean ROM, as in one with no bloat what-so-ever. And I have no idea about the kernel, whatever would work good with the ROM would be nice.
I would appreciate links, and thanks for reading.

This thread will most likely be closed, as the productiveness of a ROM and Kernel depend on usage. (How good a ROM is cannot really be judged, as it varies for everyone.) However, I am ready to provide some guidance. I like TouchWiz and its features, but I have found AOSP to be more responsive. For example, in my case, swiping through homescreens or the app drawer seems to be quicker for me on AOSP. I have also found better battery life on AOSP. You lose many features like the eye tracker when switching to AOSP. For me, that wasn't too big of a deal. So here's my current setup:
ROM: SlimBean Build 3 4.2.2
Kernel: dkp 4.2.x
Kernel Settings Adjuster: Trickster MOD
My goal when installing a ROM/Kernel is maximum battery life with good performance. I am not a heavy user, so I am undervolted -75MPU (I believe MPU is the correct unit) each step and I underclock at 1080MHz. At these settings, I still experience a smooth, quick performance along with a great battery life. With the dkp kernel, I use Trickster MOD (Refer to links above for link).
Good luck on finding what you're looking for! There are many great devs here on XDA. All of their ROMs and Kernels provide the best experience with your device! It all just depends how you use your SIII! Have fun!

need advice on rom choice. new on gnex

hi,
i'm new to the nexus since i just bricked my sgs2 with siyah kernel (korean sources have been used and bricked a lotta devices on updating the kernel)
now i'm totally overwhelmed with the list of availlable kernels and roms...
can someone please tell me just like 1 or 2 go to roms and kernels so i can start with something not too buggy i already started to read through the threads but its really alot coming from sgs2 world...
i just need something where i can undervolt a little and have mostly true ics experience (maybe with some tweaks).
i read that francone rom is used by alotta people but then i read that they dont recommend it because of lag...
thanks for the help won't bother with n00b questions after that anymore

Can you point out why or what u like about the rom?
Gesendet von meinem Galaxy Nexus mit Tapatalk 2
Everyone that answers this thread will give their version/opinion on what is the "best" and all of them will be right to some degree or another. Nearly all combinations of roms/kernels mix to something that feels slightly different in some way. Personally, I have played with 4 ROMs (AOKP, AOSP, Slim and BAMF) and 2 kernels and loved most of them. Once you root your phone, it is VERY easy to experiment and decide for yourself. Play a little.
If you want speed, download a benchmark tester and put combinations to the test. If you want customizations, nearly all roms which have threads that post 20+ msgs /day have customizations that 1/2 of us will never use.
The best answer nearly anyone can give you is to experiment and try it out. It becomes fun after a while to just try and see.
My biggest recommendations to you are these:
<1> Always NANDROID backup before you try something new.
<2> Check the MD5 sums, they are there for a reason. If a sum is different you likely will encounter bugs of some sort. Especially radios! ( I can't stress this enough. A bad radio is 1-step away from a bricked, unusable phone )
<3> Have google backup your apps or learn to use Titanium backup.
<4> If you have a setup you really like that includes a theme - dont be quick to jump to a new version of a rom until you are sure that there is a theme to get you back to where you want afterwards. Nothing is more annoying than ( for example for me ) loading up a beautiful new version and having to deal with blaring white widgets you can't invert or theme.
<5> Read a little on a rom/kernel before jumping aboard. You will get a feel from the users what's good and what's bad about it.
All the above said, if you are a cowboy and just want to jump on and try things - caution to the wind:
My personal preferences:
Liquidsmooth/Franco Nightly 512
AOKP/nearly any kernel ( my first week of playing, I flashed a new one daily to "play")
SlimICS/Lean
That order.
Aokp is the go to rom most people start with. Then expand from there if you aren't satisfied.
I agree with AOKP. I actually did everything in reverse. I started with radios, almost bricked, then went with SLIM, GUMMY, and ended up on AOKP. I like AOKP a lot. Plenty of customization, great battery life (with profiles from SetCPU), easy to learn and all wrapped up in one nice package.
I may play with alternate kernals and radios later, but not until I have more information and experience.
Liquid + lean kernel expeiremental + leantweaks + uglc1 + root .
just my 2cs
It's your choice. We can only tell you, what we think is "cool".
Make a NanD backup, download a couple of ROMs, flash them. Give them a test run, find the ROM you like, then do the same with the kernel
As you asked us: I personally think, that Jack Pham is a good ROM, I'd recommend it to everyone, and my current kernel is : Imoseyon 3.0.29 I can overclock my phone to 1.65 GHz I'm gonna update my sig, in a mo
Rather than recommend a specific ROM; I'll ask what is it you're after aside from what you'd mentioned?
If you want stability, full functionality of expected components, with some cutomizability, then you'll want a ROM with a shorter feature list.
If you're willing to trade of stability to an extent, and accept that everything may not work as expected, then go for a ROM with a massive feature list, and endless customization.
The above are generalizations, but hold true for the most part, with a 4% margin of error 98% of the time.
Each scenario has its trade offs. For the most part there are 2 schools of thought on ROM building for these phones, and 2 schools of thought for what users expect.
AOKP and stable LeanKernel for me. Great battery life, smooth performance. 5 hours with screen on. (I'm CDMA though)

Rom most note 2 users are using

Hey all,
Just wondering what rom people on this forum are using on their note 2.
Also, if the sound recording is an issue on official cm nightlies, does that mean all roms based on it like the unofficial, or vanilla rootbox, liquidsmooth have the same problem? Because they are based on also?
Thanks for your time
maybe it's time we run a poll for all the roms out there?
I bind around between a bunch, but I spend most time on the Jedi series

check the development section to see what roms people are using
and, yes, any problems that cm 10.1 has, any rom based on it most likely will have..
It's not easy to do an actual poll on here. At best you'll get pages and pages of people listing roms. No value add, no data collection or analysis. So yes, the easiest way to see what people are using is look at the roms available. And lots of people flash roms like some of us shower; what they use today may not be what they use tomorrow.

I would love to help you, but help yourself first: ask a better question

AOKP or ROOT-BOX
I've been testing out a bunch of ROMs that go by just to see what works and what is needed to be fix (let's face it... that's what this site is for... It's a developer's site that lets us alpha/beta test out their skills and report what needs to be fixed). Each ROM has their unique features and such.
It's not a popularity contest, so no, I don't think there should be a poll since it will not matter. What does matter is if you find yourself a ROM you like, support it, support the developer by saying thanks and if you can, donate. Don't be afraid to try other ROMs as well. I've said this before and I will say it again... You have nothing to lose but a bit of time depending on how much you make a ROM your home. Find which one works for you.
Nandroid backup, wipe, flash, test. Like? Say so. Something broken that hasn't been reported yet? Say so.
Try not to treat this site as a free custom workshop for your phone. Treat it as a test site and be happy the devs take the time to do these things for us users/testers.
Check my sig. Best rom!

So I have tried most all of the top 6 ROMs. Clean Rom is very stable, Jelly Thunder has nice eye candy, but hands down the best ROM for me is SkyNote 7, aka Sky Wallet. Love the light saber sound for s pen. I worked with Seanz testing wallet, so I KNOW it works. I did put the latest Perseus kernel, Awesome beats, and Apex launcher on it to customize. IMO, this ROM is the pinnacle of Note 2 development!:silly:

Cleanrom is my choice.
I've been on CleanROM for a while, but right now am trying Jedi XPX.
CleanROM is a very safe ROM to use. It's as close to stock as you can get. Hard to quantify exactly how much better performance and battery life are, but my impression is that it is better than stock. Nothing that blew my mind, but when the Note 2 is such a beast from the start, it's hard to say that it is, or isn't a vast improvement. This ROM also pairs well with a couple of custom kernels (Perseus and Saber are the ones I've tried). One awesome thing about that the developer of CleanROM does is package it with Aroma installer, which allows you to pick and choose what you want in the ROM.
I've only had Jedi XPX installed for a couple of hours and so far, it's really good. Seems to be smoother, but I can't really say with absolute certainty. You'll love this ROM if you're a Star Wars fan as the developer integrated some Star Wars soundbites with some of the actions. The developer also added his/her personal touches like having "Jedi X" at the bottom of the lock screen and "Deviant Development" on the notification bar as you're swiping it down. Personally, I don't care for it. As I've just loaded it, I can't really say much about battery life yet.
Seems to me that you really can't go wrong with the two I've mentioned above and the developers are active in supporting their ROMs.
JediXPX is the best fit for me, the battery life is just insane with his Saber Kernel........its stable as ****, and runs super smooth. i have been on it since Jedi 3. something or other.
i have tried them all as well, not just the top 6 and Jedi seems to be the one that has them all beat in my OP anyway. but there works of art so pick one and run away.
Skynote for me
JediXPX is the smoothest ROM I have ever used. And I go through a lot of roms lol

N7105XXDMA6 is what I've decided to stick with for now.
Paired with Perseus kernel seem to do really well for me. I love AOSP roms but can not stand the absence of the S-Pen/S-Note features, then again, there are mods for N7105XXDMA6 that have allowed me to mimic CM 10.1 very closely with color scheme, features, CRT animation....all that good stuff!
After going through about 6 ROMs and trying them out for a day or two. The one I have settled on is Paranoid Android 3.00 for the N7105. The vast majority of this ROM is flawless. Super smooth running with zero lag, lockscreen or otherwise. PA-Colors is a really cool feature. I thought i wasn't going to care but it really evolves they seemlessnes when switching between apps, the notification bar fades into each one and is completely customizable. Photosphere doesn't work just yet. But I expect that to come in a few updates or so.
I simply hate touch-wiz. I hope I'm not alone in feeling that way. Also, after coming the the i717 running Slimbean, the stock DPI is just way to huge looking. Touch-wiz and the stock DPI doesn't make good use of the size of the screen. I like being able to scale down the entire DPI and make it look like I'm not looking at it through a magnifying glass.
Honestly I will say that I may not completely understand the power of the S-Pen but it has enough functionality in non-touchwiz roms that i don't notice it lacking. But I do miss multi window, I really do.
Im open to suggestions and skyrocket intrigues me. I think im going to check it out.
*end rant*
The Jedi series is top notch. My personal favorite. A very good stock rom but added a few things to give it a different feel. Love it.

Jedi is really a beast. Great Bergey life and smooth as silk. Also something g that is super important very little problems and very stable. I have flashed other rooms but nothing else gave this combination. The saber kernel is amazing also. Quite a few themes that are not even built for this tomorrow flash well with it.
I have ever recently just starting g reading up on Jdevil rom and it seems to be getting rave reviews for speed and battery. It is based on the new international base and said to be super fast. People are getting huge quad scores without even oc. Something to keep an eye on.

I just got the phone last week, so im new to what ROM's are out there for the phone.. Whats the difference between Touchwiz and AOSP?
I am running CM10.1 (the most recent 'stable' build)
I've been running said rom non-stop since saturday and I have noticed no bugs thus far.
If anything it seems faster and more stable than stock touchwiz.
most noticeably my battery lasts WAY longer than it used to.
Just make sure you flash the right way, with the correct Gapps
I flashed the CM first by itself, then after it booted up successfully I went back and flashed Gapps separately.
Good luck and have fun!
I'm a noob so I can't post links... but get . cm is the site for the cm zip download,

All of the roms are pretty stable, the best way to find one to your liking is to browse the development forum, read the ops of the roms and find some that are to your liking and try them all out. Everybody wants different things from their phone, so asking what's the best/most stable Rom is like asking what the best sandwich is for your tastes, just gotta try them out and decide for yourself...:thumbup::thumbup: good luck in finding songwriting that suits your needs

Touchwiz is more of Samsung's addition to Android. AOSP is considered a fuller Google experience. For a stable AOSP ROM, your best bet would to be start out with CM10.1. CM10.1, an AOSP ROM, is much smoother than the S3's stock Touchwiz ROM. It runs much quicker and it often has better battery life. However, with AOSP ROMs, you lose Touchwiz features, such as "Smart Stay". You will most likely have to flash quite a few ROMs before you find one you like. I would suggest starting out by flashing the M snapshot of CM10.1 which can be downloaded here. Also, do not forget to flash the 4.2.1 gapps which you can get here. I am assuming you are rooted with a custom recovery installed. If this is the case, just look around in the dev section and you will find many tutorials giving step by step instructions how to flash specific ROMs. CM10.1 is now considerably stable and is fine for daily use.
Pros of Touchwiz: Has many nice features that make a more friendly user experience.
Cons of Touchwiz: Stock ROM is bloated. Often slower than an AOSP ROM. Usually has worse battery life than an AOSP ROM.
Pros of AOSP ROMs: Smoother user experience. Better battery life. Full Google experience. Developers often update these ROMs faster.
Cons of AOSP ROMs: Does not have as many features as Touchwiz.
Aosp is also a lot more customizable.
I consider my phone to be pretty great looking.
And it's pretty stock lol

Most of the roms on this forum are quite stable. Just read the first couple posts of the thread then read at least the last 10 pages. That'll give you a pretty good idea of any problems that may arise. But apart from that, it's really just a matter of preference. Some roms may do certain things that others don't. TW roms and AOSP-based roms are fairly different. AOSP-type roms are usually less bloated and therefore quicker however, TW roms can be just as smooth. My personal preferences for each type are:
AOSP: CM 10.1
TW: Goodness Rom (on team-nocturnal forums, also my absolute favorite thus far) or The People's Rom

[Q] Best ROM for a simple user?

Looked around a good bit and did a good bit of searching, however there are a good number of choices that seem close, but without first hand I don't know, some of the posts are also a good bit dated and ROM's seem to change so often it can be hard sometimes using the outdated posts, so please bare with me.
I don't do much with the phone, I use Google maps, calls and text, everything else is very rare, so I am looking for something as stable as can be with the best battery life. I enjoy simple things and don't care for eye candy either way, so if it's there it does not bother me but if it looked like a cmd line but still functioned I would not care either. Any suggestions or pointers would be helpful.
You should probably just stick with the stock ROM, but root your phone and delete all the AT&T bloatware. If you're not satisfied with that, maybe try a custom kernel. Once you feel the need for some customization, try a custom touchwiz ROM, like S3Rx (what I'm running now). It's stable and gets great battery life, but also has theming options and other tweaks.
S3Rx thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2252932
1. Read the ROMs OP. It will tell you its features.
2.Each rom is unique. Not one is better or simple than others.
3.it is completely up to you to figure out what you like as a daily driver

[Q] Opinions for Custom Rom with good battery life and performance

Hello everyone,
first post since I got a Note 2... and I really like this phone... people seem to have a laugh at me since it is on a larger side, but then I have my own laughs when i see them trying to properly view web pages etc...
I have decided to go the custom Rom way, however, I would like some help.
I would like to have a decent ROM which gives good battery life and decent performance....my usage is pretty normal, email, Facebook, browsing, etc, not much games... so the ROM does not need to be performance oriented.
Any tips please on where to start... Tried searching here, but got a bit mixed up...
I like the stock looking TW Roms and would like Snote and the basic stuff such as calendar etc..
also which kernel would be suggested with this ROM.
Any help will be appreciated I know that I will have to try some ROMS to see which is best, however any help will save me a lot of flashing ROMS, kernels etc..... I know that usage is dependant on user patters etc, but some direction will be appreciated.
Many thanks to all...

I want opinions on a custom rom (with all the benefits of a custom rom) that gives good battery life... not one which improves battery life...
been flashing many roms so far and all of them are good and yea battery life depends on your usage, before i use aosp rom specially slimbean, the only reason i use aosp because it doesn't have any lag for me, not for games but generaly everything. even i use stock and rooted samsung rom i got lag wheb browsing even just the settings when sliding it down and even the gallery and messaging, it's just a slight lag. but after trying omega v18 rom it doesn't have and im surprise coz i dont have to use aosp rom with some minor bug and now im happy using samsung custom rom with no lag and enjoying all stock features. so battery is not a problem really on our note 2 just pick whatever that gives better performance. but whatever it's your personal taste on what rom do you want.

cheers... will also try the ROM you mentioned... and thanks... it has to be a TW Rom ideally as i like the interface.... plus some of the samsung apps I use, so will to have those....
its normal to be concerned about battery life
amongst stock sammy roms the battery performance is also going downhill unfortunately, MG1 being the worst,
taking cue from tamirda i went for mf2 and the best one i feel was the chinese release, but it has chinese bloat and no play store,
its malaysian version is defintely one for keeps
me6 is also better than mg1
i like to root with cf auto -root and use xposed framework for customisation so i can stay on an odexed rom.....
tamirdas mf2 custom rom v13 will give a good combination of customisations, rooted deodexed experiences and battery life.
i wish someone would make a rom on the chinese mf2
i also love aosp and its looks and features but battery wise -- well im still testing with various kernel/rom combinations on 4.3
If you have a 7105. Then I'd recommend Jedi x17 with the newest saber kernel. Battery for me is better than stock. It also comes with nice eye candy and a lot of built in goodies.
But to each their own
