[Q] Best ROM for a simple user? - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Looked around a good bit and did a good bit of searching, however there are a good number of choices that seem close, but without first hand I don't know, some of the posts are also a good bit dated and ROM's seem to change so often it can be hard sometimes using the outdated posts, so please bare with me.
I don't do much with the phone, I use Google maps, calls and text, everything else is very rare, so I am looking for something as stable as can be with the best battery life. I enjoy simple things and don't care for eye candy either way, so if it's there it does not bother me but if it looked like a cmd line but still functioned I would not care either. Any suggestions or pointers would be helpful.

You should probably just stick with the stock ROM, but root your phone and delete all the AT&T bloatware. If you're not satisfied with that, maybe try a custom kernel. Once you feel the need for some customization, try a custom touchwiz ROM, like S3Rx (what I'm running now). It's stable and gets great battery life, but also has theming options and other tweaks.
S3Rx thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2252932

1. Read the ROMs OP. It will tell you its features.
2.Each rom is unique. Not one is better or simple than others.
3.it is completely up to you to figure out what you like as a daily driver

questions... newbie help

I recently ventured into flashing my evo and it was quite easy to root, and return to stock. thank you guys for all of the information posted or else i wouldnt have been able to do it..
My questions are about roms.. Which Rom is the best to use for performance and battery conservation..
So far I love HTC sense, but i'd like more battery and less lag out of it.
Rom's I have tried are:
Cynagen 6
Fresh 3.5
and another i can't remember the name but it was based off of android 2.1
All of these roms ATE my battery.. within an hour-hour and a half I was down to nothing, and It sat in my pocket the whole time, after running quadrant.
I did however notice, my phone would never go to sleep on either rom, not sure if i messed up with rooting it or not.
Any suggestions on what rom to use? I don't want to wait two years for the new sense ui and am curious about gingerbread.
The rom im looking into as of now is CM7-EX.v9, Mixed replies for problems/no problems in that thread though.
As i have said I am new to this, new to linux, etc.. any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.. thank you and thanks or all of the great things on this forum.
Personally I'm using a customized version of MikFroyo 4.4. I'd have to say what he's done to speed up the system is amazing. A lot of tedious work. I turn it into a "senseless" version and remove an ishload of other apps and use ADW Launcher EX. All in all, it's the best ROM I've used. Battery life is pretty decent as well.
If you like sense then try myn's rls 5
As for roms, what do you need to have and what can you do without? AOSP roms still don't have full functionality but do have really sweet custom things added in that could make up for it.
As for speed, I have compared CM6.1 to the Sense rom I am using now and the Sense one is faster/smoother. It has Mikfroyo 4.4 as the base but is even faster than that one. Battery life is OK.
However, if you are not even getting 2hrs out of your battery then something is wrong. You need to investigate or change some settings because no matter what combo you are using should get at least half a day out of it.
1) Make sure you wipe everything before you flash (I'd recommend Calkulin's format all zip)
2) Let ROMs and their respective kernels "settle into your phone." This usually takes 2-3 days.
3) Pick ROMs that don't emphasize speed/power (CM) as much and more on user experience (Myn's)
4) Check my sig if none of these help (however they should )
You may also want to check and see if you are on the newest pri 1.90 if so you can try flashing back to pri1.77 this has helped some people with the 100% wake issue. Then I would suggest another kernel possibly. Good luck.
Oh and +1 for mikfroyo!
mikfroyo seems to be the way to go... someone told me that the battery life would be junk for a few days but i wasn't sure.. i was more worried about the awake time and the up time being the same, meaning something was keeping my battery on.
I like the sense, in fact i'd love to try the new sense for the htc desire on it to see how it is.. looks amazing.
bloatware and what not i can do without
i dont have 4g in my area
i'd like to have both cameras working(i use them alot with my daughter)
mostly its a weather/texting machine.. sound like i got the wrong phone lol.. but i love the advantages of it.

New User, advice on ROM?

Just got an EVO tonight, I would have liked to wait for 3D but I needed faster internet/phone asap since I started my new job.
I've been reading the forums, how to root, etc. the past couple of days, and am in the process of rooting. But there are just so many ROMs all which have there own pros/cons, so I was wondering if anyone had advice based on what I mainly want to use my phone for...
CM7 seems like the most popular, and I care mainly about stability, removing bloatware, and performance, care less about visual stuff. Plus it sounds like you can customize it with themes anyways.
But I've read threads where GPS/4G breaks which is what I care about the most.
I live in OC which has 4G, and that is the primary reason I upgraded from my old phone. 95% of the time this phone will be used for internet/games.
I was debating just going for a stock ROM, but not sure if benefits of a custom one outweighs stock ones.
Does anyone have advice on a stable ROM that improves performance and has little risk of breaking things like 4G? Or at least a few I can narrow down to?

Normally I would suggest MIUI, but since you need 4G either go with CM 7 or if you want to stick with a Sense based ROM I would suggest MikFroyo. Hope that helps and good luck with the new job.

If you want to keep your stock rom you can also just search root uninstaller on the market and get rid of any bloatware on the stock rom.
CM7 is the way to go friend...
Thanks for the replies. I thought I'd get the CM7 suggestions. I'm assuming RC4 is the version I want?
The only issue I had was that I saw in the known issues that some people were experiencing problems with 4G/GPS, so I wasn't sure if that was a widespread issue or not.
cm7 is an awesome ROM, dont get me wrong... if its your first rom troubleshooting may be a hassle because until it becomes an official release there will be bugs to deal with.
my suggestion would be look in the development thread and try a simple sense based rom first and read its threads (or even cm7 for that matter) to see what people are reporting about it.
*imho*
I switch between my own stock backup and CM7. CM7 is the way to go if you are looking for a different rom. It is basically stable. I have found nothing wrong with it.
MIKFROYO is great, but have been running Koni's Elite 111 with Honeycomb Dream theme for over a month...AWESOME...STABLE...FAST using netarchy 4.3.2 cfs sbc havs less
I was wondering this myself last week and what I found out is that once you see how easy it is to switch roms you'll be testing out a bunch of them and keep finding yourself returning to a particular one for one reason or another... and that's the one I stuck with. I ended up using Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo but I'm sure I'll be trying out a couple more today
Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo RLS5. It's fast, stable and everything works and it's very customizable like any other Android device.

But GPS does not work on CM7 without real hassle, well I couldn't get it to work.
Love that you got a new job and need a phone to play games and browse the web 95% of the time

Koni's elite series iii is very stable, very fast, and looks great.

lol I know right. Basically my old company was cool with everything as long as I got my work done so I never really needed to use internet on my phone as much. Have a good gaming rig at home and was always at my desk at work.
My new job is with at a larger corp. (like 3,000 people) and has way more rules and regulations. My boss doesn't care and always goes on his phone or reads the paper in his freetime, but it's a company rule. So I wanted something that I could go online with
Anyways, I rooted and installed CM7 last night, it was quite easy. I haven't had any problems but I did like certain things with the stock Sense UI better. Maybe I'll try some other ROMs suggested here since it was so easy.
I gotta agree that, I've use MIUI, CM6 (not 7), fresh, and researched but not used MikFroyo, and my favorite right now is Myn's Warm 2.2 RLS5 w/o a doubt. It has everything you would want in a SENSE based ROM. Then, I'd also download the launcher pro that's right on that same thread, it adds a ton of additional customization that is great.
If you want a stock look but a bit faster and possibly better battery life check out Calkulins evio series 2 its on version 1.8,by far my favorite sense rom.
If you want aosp gb rom very stable really fast, gps works for me but with all gb aosp its different from user to user.Try salvage mod on version 1.1 though 1.2 is coming soon.
Both great roms.
I'm running the new CM7 Final, and I love it. I was using the nightlies and the RC's, and they were all great for a daily driver. Now CM7 Final is out? To me, this can't be beat.
It's fast, stable, has the features, and does everything I want. Let us know which one you decided to try out...

[Q] Help finding a new ROM

Hello all,
Basically I've been running the same ROM as my daily for 2 months (Frosty Jellybean 11.5) and I'm kinda bored of it. Plus I've been getting this bug where my lock screen messes up and I have to reboot my phone. I'm in the market for a new ROM and there's a lot to choose from so it's a bit overwhelming. I want something that's fairly small, fast, and close to stock. I don't need a lot of crazy features as long as I can underclock my CPU, and the Rom is customizable. I like to change it up every once in a while.
I was looking at Synergy. But the Rom seems big at 900 something MBs. The reviews make it look fast. And their thread says a lots of good things about it (Don't they all). It seems good, but may lack the customization features I want. This was almost the first ROM I went with from the beginning, but I failed to flash it after tons of download attempts and even restoring the phone to stock and trying to flash. If anyone can tell me whether or not this is working now that would be awesome. Also, does Morphology work with this ROM?
MIUI is also a good contender. I know it has amazing customization options. But can anyone give me information regarding performance and stability?
I will hear out recommendations for any other ROM's as well. I know these are all probably stupid questions and it's mostly a matter of preference, but I wanted a more informed opinion than mine. All these ROM's look amazing at a glance.
Thanks you for your patience,
Alex
if you're going for MIUI, wait for MIUI v5 to come out, hope it comes soon.
If you're looking for small with a lot of options I'm thinking that AOSP/AOKP are good options. I enjoy Liquid, Carbon, and Rootbox. They are all the same feel with minor differences. The big change that is causing a hiccup is the 3.4.X kernels that are being included. If you're looking for real stability I think the older version is what you're looking for. If you're thinking TW still, then you'll need to expect a large file size since many include the AROMA installer and whichever add-ons they choose to include. My TW recommendation would be Wicked because of the options, speed, and stability. MIUI is great for customizations, like you said, but I seem to always run into some bugs that can be irritating. Not the most "stable" but plenty of fun and worth the bugs that come with it.
I say give one of the AOSP/AOKP Roms a shot, and when the newest port of MIUI comes this way you can see how that is.
Thank you guys for the replies.
Does anyone have comments on the synergy ROM? I have a few questions about it. Is it compatible with Morphology? Could anybody get it to install correctly on their T-Mobile S3? Is it buggy?
I was also looking at ParanoidAndroid and JellyBam. I've read good things about them, but nothing really sticks out when I take a look at their threads. Could someone with experience using these ROMS chime in?

Rom question...

I'm wanting to root and flash my g3. I'm not wanting to do it all the time like I used to with my old HTC phones... So could someone point me to a stable, very smooth snappy rom with good battery life. I'm not looking for anything flashy or really different then stock. Just wanting to do a one and done...
So what are your suggestions????
Just an FYI. This should have been posted in Q/A . That being said. Honestly it all depends on you. How you use your Device. What you expect from the Rom. What you consider " Good " battery life. There are many variables. What I consider good, may not be to your liking. But that being said. I'll give you a few choices. First would be TPR. It's as close to Stock as I would go. Stable fast, and reliable. Then there is M.O.A.R. It looks almost completely Stock,. Or you can customize the heck out of it with the built in Morphology. Also fast, Stable, and reliable. If you want to go completely over the Top. You should check out JellyBomb. Fully Themed, completely customized, and a Ton of baked in Extras. Not matter which one you choose, I would first suggest reading up on the thread of the Rom. Prior to Flashing .anything. That will better help you decide which one will suit your needs best.
And with that, best rom threads are closed.
Users are expected to determine what is best for their own needs.

What is the best M8 ROM?

I'm looking to root as I'm out of warranty. But, I've been out of the loop for a while. What's the best M8 ROM at the moment?
I don't mind between Sense or GPE (although the phone is stock Sense). It seems like Venom might be the best option. Either that or Skydragon. But, I'm not sure. My priorities are speed/battery life. But I do need it to be relatively stable and bug-free since it'll be a daily driver.
I would really appreciate any help. Thanks in advance!
Asking "what is the best ROM" is like asking folks what your favorite color should be. Everyone has different preferences and needs. Sure, Viper and Skydragon are great. As are ICE, S.ROM, GPE, and any number of other ROMs. Sure, folks may have recommandations. But just because someone else likes it "best" has no bearing on whether you will like it or not.
I can think of at least a few times in the past, where the ROM that worked best for me, was one that was more obscure, and not so popular. You'll never find those jems, if you just flash what the is popular, or follow what folks tell you to.
Sounds like you've identified a few that look good to you. Just flash and try them out, and see what you like best.
Thanks for the advice! I completely understand that.
My only issue is that the M8 will be my main/work phone. So, I don't have that much time to explore various ROMs. I'll definitely try out a few but I would prefer to get one that works.
But the points you raised are important. In that case, I would change the question a bit. In terms of battery life/speed, what is the best ROM? I'm looking for something that is relatively smooth, fast and bug-free. Or would you say that all the ones you mentioned fit that criteria?
Again, battery life varies drastically from one person to another based on variables such as your local reception, what types of apps used, etc. All of the Sense ROMs and GPE ROMs are based on official software (but with customizations and optimizations added), and tend to be very stable and bug free. All are worthy of being reliable daily drivers. And just because I didn't mention it, doesn't mean its not a great ROM either.
