[Q] Tethering on Rooted i747 with stock 4.1.1 - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Looking for a suggestions for tethering (preferably usb) rooted JB i747. I have unlimited and recently received notice in the mail for using a third party no root app. I have rooted but am looking for reliable apps or suggestions. I have tried WiFi tether TrevE mod. Laptop did not see the SSID. I've read some people have been getting notices using FoxFi. I was trying to use CWM Tether, but it would not install on my Win 8 laptop.

I have. I actually have that installed. I was concerned about the detectability of it though. I know some apps enable it as a proxy, I just didn't know if using that would make it "more detectable."

[Q] Mobile Hot spot - doesn't work

I've recently upgraded from a Samsung Galaxy S, and the hot spot worked just fine, I'd connect with my laptop, and get internet access. ( Stock ROM )
This time around, on my Galaxy S II, I can get my laptop to connect, but I can't get internet access...
My plan hasn't changed, just the phone.
I'm tempted to try a custom ROM to see if that will help... has anyone else seen anything like this? Thanks!
I tether everyday brother works great.First off are you rooted. If so go in to t.b and freez tether manager.golden after that my friend
From a glaxay better than yours.
Its not rooted, but neither was my regular galaxy S.
You gotta be rooted on this phone to tether for free. They blocked it on this one.

Good to know. I find it odd that I can connect still, it seems like if it were a block, you wouldn't be able to get as far as connecting a device to it. It's also odd that the older galaxy S isn't blocking it.
I'll try it rooted, thanks.
I work at T-Mobile and customers tell me all the time that tethering and hotspot work for them without a plan. Usually it will let them access it for a while and then stop. I think they let you use it at first to see the advantage of using the service and get you hooked so you will add the paid feature.
I just found this but you have to be on the 5 or 10 gb plan www.phonearena.com/news/T-Mobile-qu...ith-free-mobile-hotspot-from-Jan-25th_id26064
Just a quick question..
On a stock / light tweaked (Mr X's ROM) I was able to tether..
However, when I update to other ROm's like Zombie's I am unable to use Tether or Hotspot. (Giving me invalid sim/mobile data not available)
My Telus plan includes tether and would like to use it .. however it seems like I must be on a TELUS only rom to be able to use it??

So long as you freeze tether manager with Titanium you should be fine. Perhaps you aren't able to do it on Zombie's because they didn't remove it from the ROM.

I mean it will launch the service, its technically an ad-hoc hotspot but it blocks certain ports that denies you acces to the WWW. I think all the new phones you have to pay for it or root, which is why the Vibrant didn't need to be rooted for you to use the tether service for free.

Way to wifi tether with Paranoid Android?

Hello, I've been trying to figure out how would I get wifi tethering to work on Paranoid Android. I've been searching now and I found a thread to download it and such. I read the changelog and I noticed this above v1.2
"-Wifi Tethering doesnt works, but USB/Bluetooth works fine"
Has this been fixed on the newest version? I really want to download Paranoid Android on my phone but one of the things that I NEED are USB and Wifi Tethering, because USB and Wifi Tethering are the only ways I can access the internet on my PC/Game Systems/etc... This ROM seems so cool too, but I can't download it if Wifi tethering won't work.
Oh, and if you want to know what phone I have in case of any reason, I have the Samsung Galaxy Nexus (Toro).
Thanks.

I'm running PA on my GNexus and wifi tether works flawlessly, I've not tried USB tether but the option is there and I've no reason to suspect it won't work.
PA is a great ROM, make a nandroid and flash it, you have nothing to lose. :good:

You don't need a third party app, I'm just using the built in JB wifi tethering.

How do I do that? I don't know how to do it? Will verizon charge me and give me a 2GB cap? I'm used to using that app, so I don't know how to tether via wifi. >.<

So, I just go on settings and use the systems wifi tethering? Will verizon notice I'm doing that and charge me for that? Thats my only problem too, the third party app that I use doesn't charge me or anything. So, won't using the normal tether on the settings menu (while on Paranoid Android) cause verizon to charge me for that feature? Please answer ASAP.
Whilst I was on stock I tried and failed to use the 3rd party app I had prev used on GB to tether so I think it is a JB issue rather than a PA one.
Regardless of how you tether you will use data and incur data charges from Verizon. That may or may not be against your contract rules. Your 3rd party app was still using data which Verizon will have been charging you for.
To tether on JB you go to settings > wireless and networks > more... > tethering and portable hotspot.

What I ment was Verizon has a extra service for making a wifi hotspot, that you'd have to pay monthly. So it sucks actually, I don't want to be paying for two services. The third party app actually bypasses it or something, because it works fine without Verizon noticing. But, again, I don't want to be paying for two services.
I can't really answer that question then, though I don't see how the JB tethering will work any differently to the 3rd party app in that respect.
Maybe someone on Verizon will be able to confirm, or you could just try it and see.

How To Tether on Jelly Bean?

Anyone know which program, since the JB 4.1.1 updated (AT&T SGH-I747) will allow tethering preferably both wifi and usb. I tried this one and can't get it to work with the Samsung S3 profile selected or the Galaxy Nexus GSM profile selected.

Don't think you can unless u root your phone. At&t doesn't allow it.

I'm rooted. That app I referenced specifically says you need a rooted phone. I just don't see the SSID come up on my notebook. I want something that can also tether USB too, as then I don't have to worry about locking down security on the Wifi or draining the phone battery.
What are the options if you root it?

Been searching for an hour now. Tried two other apps. Neither worked. (Neither said root was necessary). Not willing to pay for Foxfi just to see it not work. Elixir 2 people have used but I think this is all pre Jelly Bean, at least for the GSM (AT&T) version of this phone.
Seems maybe we have to wait. All the apps, videos, posts out there seem to be for ICS. Guess this is the downfall when you update within 24 hours of the update being released. Need to let the developers catch up.
I can confirm pdanet works....havent tried foxfi but im sure it does as well considering how similar they work...
Galaxy S III I747
Prior to update I was using FoxFi and it looks like it still works with Jelly Bean but I'm unable to get the Proxy Add-On to work since Jelly Bean.
Do you think I'll get caught tethering if I run FoxFi without the Add-On or does the Add-On only provide a false sense of security and is really not making a difference?
If it makes a difference, I'm on one of the old 2GB plans, not the new shared plans, but not unlimited either. Also, I'm stock, not rooted.
Finally, if you don't think this works, any suggestions that would work in this situation?
Thanks!

I was on the old 5GB plan (the one that allowed tethering) and switched to the new shared plan (since I don't do that much data but do call a lot and wanted the unlimited calling (saves me over a hundred bucks a month)) and on these plans they do allow tethering. From what I understand, you will need to have a rooted phone if you want to tether under any other (older) plan..

I guess we should be specific that we are looking for apps that not only work on JB 4.1.1 but also don't require a tethering or shared data plan. So people say an apps works but fail to point out it's because their carrier is okaying the app since they have a qualifying plan. So pdanet works on JB 4.1.1 SGH-I747 without an AT&T tethering or shared data plan?

No...you should have said "I have no clue what im doing so can you please explain every single detail to me?". WTF does a tethering plan have to do with you being able to tether or not if youre rooted? You need to disable to tethering provision via TB!

Not everyone on here has been on an Android phone and screwing with it all their lives. For example, what the heck is "TB" ? Don't assume everyone has as much experience as you, just because they are a participant on XDA. And I should also add on that requirement, NO CUSTOM ROM.
So an appropriate answer might be the following:
If you are on JB 4.1.1 and want to tether without a tethering plan from your carrier, and you are on the STOCK ROM. You need to do this, this, this and this. Or just post a frickin link to someone who DID take the time to explain it for the rest of us. Does your solution require rooting, or doesn't it. STATE IT. So future people when they search the forums, they don't find a bunch of misleading, dead-end solutions and/or bickering.
I just came from iPhone and I was a jailbreaker. I'm loving the S3 and Jelly Bean. But on the iPhone, I'd jailbreak (equivalent of rooting on Android), install MyWiFi, and DONE and DONE. It seems this was how it was on ICS with this phone. Now on JB, not so simple. There's dozens of posts on several threads on several forums around the Internet of people no longer getting their tethering app to work since JB upgrade. These are both rooted and non-rooted, but they are all STOCK JB ROMs.
So please, tell us the trick to get a stock JB 4.1.1 ROM SGH-I747 AT&T to tether without the plan. We are all ears!

Not sure as I've been to busy with my real life outside of XDA to spend hours reading and reading posts.
Bottom line, if there was an app you can just download and install for ICS before that worked, isn't it just a matter of time until someone publishes an app on Google Play (may require rooting, big deal) that does the same without a bunch of workarounds and crap.
Look one post above yours
Install that zip file via CWM(clockworkmodrecovery)....then download TITANIUM BACKUP (TB...you need the pro version...you can download lucky patcher for that) and go in and freeze the tethering provision app. This will allow you to tether without your carrier knowing...kindof...
P.S. ICS was the same protocol. You have to freeze the tethering provision...
Galaxy S III I747
Thank you. I've got Titanium Backup installed now. So should I just use the built-in AT&T tethering app now or is it 'safer' to use something else?
Found it.
Still no love. CW Recovery and Team Epic Root Installed. TB Pro installed. Tethering Provisioning Uninstalled.
Tried to Tethering Apps on Google Play, neither work. "Free USB Tethering App" and "Wifi Tethering for Root" (tried Auto and Samsung S3 profiles). No Dice. Thought there was an native AT&T app but may have uninstalled it with TB when cleaning out bloatware.
SGH-I747 AT&T
Okay, duh, I found the Tether toggle in Advanced Settings. I also found a couple tether apps that don't require root that actually came up on the network, but I get 'Limited' connectivity indication in Windows with no Internet access.
Now get this, whenever I go into Settings > Advanced > Tether if I toggle it on or off or toggle USB sharing on, I get the message "Settings application has stopped working" Some of the tethering apps also "stop working" when I try to run them even though I see the blue tether notification icon in the status bar and I can see the SSID on the network and connect, but it is as if the phones ability to bridge the wifi hotspot it is providing to the 4G Internet connection is broke.
****. Do I need to load Kies and to a stock firmware restore, or is that not even possible not that I have CW recovery installed. I really really didn't want to get into this Android tweaking Hell and now I'm there. Another wasted frickin weekend! Maybe I'll just go back to iPhone. Hopefully the iOS 6 jailbreak is out now (untethered).
Kind of ticked up about being lead down the road that indicated just freezing the tethering provisioning was the solution to all my woes. Maybe it worked for some (are you on JB 4.1.1 with AT&T SGH-I747???) but not me. After a couple more hours of searching and searching, including all sorts of YouTube videos showing using FoxFi, Wifi Tether for Root, etc, and then a lot of recent comments about it nor working. Anyways.....
Soultion is a newer hacked version of Wifi Tether for Rooted user that is not on the Play Store and the apk has to be downloaded directly. Current version is here:

What a pain in the ass it took to finally find this. Guess that's the price you pay when you are brand new to Android and an OS update comes out two weeks after you got your phone and you install it the day it comes out. Sigh.
Ugh. Got too excited too quick. You can't toggle Wifi back on after shutting down tethering without restarting phone! Guess it's going to be a few more days until some good developers come out with a simple one-app solution without issues. It was WAY easier to get free tethering on the jailbroken iPhone that this. I'm shocked this is so hard right now on Android JB 4.1.1. But I have to remember the OS update just came out.

[Q] Not Rooted Nexus Foxfi & JellyBean

Ok,
I've searched and can't find an answer to these questions. (Please point me there if I'm search challenged. I looked through 99 threads over the last two days but nothing seemed to deal with un rooted phones.)
I have a new nexus, upgraded from a Photon because my company (who provides the phone & service) implemented a new policy that bans rooted devices.
I had a custom ROM on the photon because it was abandoned for android updates. That wouldn't work and I wasn't willing to go back to gingerbread. So, I bought a Nexus on ebay.
The only thing left that I need root for is tether. I understand that foxfi works with no root, but only on ICS, not jellybean. In fact, the Foxfi website says to not upgrade to jelly bean.
No problem. ICS is fine. Except for the annoying prompts to update to JellyBean via OTA. Can I make this stop? If not, is there a tether option that works on an unrooted Nexus running jelly bean? These OTA update notifications are driving me insane.
Thanks for your help.

How do I get to the system/app directory to put in the .apk from the link if I'm not rooted? I can't see it in es explorer, nor can I see it when I connect to the laptop.
I thought you had to be rooted to see that directory?
If you don't have your heart set on FoxFi I would suggest using "Hotspot Toggle Widget" by Fattin Hotspot Network.
It works like a charm on a stock device with JellyBean. No root necessary.

You can also buy switcher pro. It has the ability to activate the tether feature without checking the subscription from the phone company. I've successfully used this for months with no issue and it works on both ICS and Jellybean.
Well Crap. I upgraded to jelly bean, and the fattin hotspot does NOT work. I get a message that I haven't subscribed to a data plan. I also can't use pdanet as I can't get into phone settings to turn USB debugging on without root.
I can't find a "switcher pro" in the appstore, is it possible it's "switch pro"? and are you sure it works without root? I'm a litte gunshy at the moment for obvious reasons.
thanks.

[Q] 4.4.2 once rooted possible to tether on old plan? don't have 2.5gb tether plan

Hello everyone and excuse me for noob question. I got my note 3 few days ago already with 4.4.2. I will try to root using updated files for build uvucnb4. I'm curious if it will be possible to tether if I follow the buying wifi tether router video. I currently don't have the 2.5gb wifi tether option as I'm on a grandfathered plan that doesn't include this feature for my note 3. Do have unlimited Internet though. Haven't done anything yet as I'm still unclear on this. Really want to root just for this feature alone. Want to be able to tether my kids tablet and pc at home. Thanks and sorry I tried searching every where.

Thanks for quick response! Sorry but when you say tether to laptop via USB cable, I have the option to tether either way? Now how would I tether with the USB cable, is there an option for either wifi or USB cable? Sorry for dumb question very dumb when it comes to this. Thanks again
Yes it does work. I have the same grand fathered plan and using native tether on wicked rom. On stock kk you change the apn as listed on this forum. Delete or freeze tethering provision and use a play store widget to activate tether. It will force close settings once or twice when activates but will work on 3rd time.

Awesome thanks mike!! Seems like it's working very well. So for noobs as myself download kitkat build uvucnb4 root files. Flash via odin, download titanium backup, freeze tether provision, download wifi tether router from play store, make new apn as stated on the tutorial, and should work at least for me so far... now just wondering will tmobile be able to find out when I'm using my cup like downloading software to it or updating it or even just surfing the web?? Thanks for the help guys!!
I rooted my note 3 and using the wifi tether router from play store for hotspot. However, that is a paid software, but it's simple to use. got about 20mbps when on LTE.
